French skier Valentin Giraud-Moine has a shocking fall during a downhill race at the German ski resort of Garmisch Partenkirchen on Friday, January 27, 2017. His team later confirmed he had fractured both legs.
Giraud-Moine wasn't the only one to fall. Six other skiers, including the American Steve Nyman and Canada's Erik Guay also crashed. Despite flipping, Guay was somehow able to avoid serious injury.

This video was uploaded in 2017 - this is not a video from the current Winter Olympics.
I think it's pretty clear...It says Val d'Isere, not Beijing. Val d'isere is in France but thank you anyway.
@@paulhomsy2751 people would surprise you
duh
I’m not sure about that
It is amazing how many people comment on this stuff and don't bother to read! People have been commenting on all the ski racing videos and they think it was all from this Olympics.
To anyone wondering, he recovered after only a year and even went on to win the 19/20 Europacup for this discipline.
absolutely cracking
:/
What an absolute tank
That's very good to learn. I was thinking his career as a ski athlete was over.
@@dewfall56 Me too
Me: can’t stand watching people get hurt or injured
Also me: BREAKS LEGS?! I gotta see this!
sooooooooooooo soooooooooooooo true !!
Omg so fuxking true hahahahah
relatable
Same ugh x0Looking in comments for comfort
yeah. exactly. we are all sick people. lol.
Damn that’s straight ice no snow
You can hear it loud and clear
World Cup skiing is on a hard surface you can’t have a soft surface when you’re at that high-speed
You don' watch skiing do you?
The whole track is ice they inject water into it so it freezes and everyone gets the same conditions
DJ Scottdog its Hard packed snow...
I felt anxiety while watching this
You look like a koala...of course you felt anxiety. Kidding. I gasped and moaned...the pain!
Koala Fun same
Right? I had no idea when he was going to crash, he hit every turn so fast I had butterflies throughout the whole video. Great watch.
Good for you.
gamejr84 haha, nice
Downhill can be the most exciting and the most tragic sport to watch.
Ray Charles night time is the right gime
I felt my feet getting wet like the first time I was skiing on a steep stage...
Honestly this guy even tho his injuries are career ending ( I think he's skiing again) ,it's better than death
You seen that video where the guy died because he hit the safety net too hard? I think where is legs connected to his body at the crotch split. Jeez, he lost so much blood before he even slid to a stop
@@TBOG you’re talking about Gernot Reinstadler. The video is on yt I think. Pretty horrifying
Ouch... amazing skiing up to that point. A true sport that one...
Brian Blackie sure is funny though to watch em crash
bigv3192 funny? Funny how?
@@tbz1551 Funny like I'm a clown, I'm here to amuse you?
Long run, perhaps fatigue a factor... curious how close to finish he was before his tragic fall.
yeah it looked like a lot of fun, until he broke both his legs
The fact that his knee was already flopping in unnatural directions before he hit the fence scares me.
yeah I noticed that too I hope he's okay and makes a full recovery
It was not the crash. Thats what made him crash.
if you look closely, just before he hits the fence his leg emits a cloud of snow. thats him jamming his boots into the hard snow at 100kmh and his shin bones crumpling under the pressure
I was wondering do I watch this and risk fainting or tap out.
I tapped out.
@@judgejudyslover know your limits. Good choice.
That was closer to ice skating than skiing and it looked scary as hell. These skiers have to be one of bravest athletes in the world. I hope he made a full recovery.
He made his comeback a year later in 2018. Even went on to win a Europacup after that injury.
The fact that this man recovered and won a championship is amazing it just goes to show you the resilience in the human body.
The man may have recovered but his underwear will never be the same. Rest in peace Fruit of the Loom Guys.
He didn't break anything, he tore his ACL,MCL and maniscus. Which is 10x worse than breaking any bone. I can tell you from personal experience it's the worst pain I've ever felt in my life compared to a broken collar bone, broken arm, broken leg, fractured fingers...it's bad.
Not true breaking a bone is on another level of pain I would know I broke my ulna and radius together. Tearing ligaments are painful and uncomfortable but nowhere near bones
Shiba Sneakz right sure either way tht wasn’t the discussion
@@zayinghui6282 i can conform that i break my arm and ankle also tore my ACL MCL the ligaments hurts but i could not come even close to bone pain its like a joke when compare to bone fracture this is my experience
@jannis joplin And when we were just little nippers, we lived in a shoe and mother made us re-sole it before we went to school every morning--with no breakfast.
did i ask?
I'm a former downhiller and I can tell you that halfway down a mountain like this your thigh muscles are literally on fire and your knees start to feel like jello. But what an incredible thrill ride. Nothing compares to doing this at speeds 80-100 mph.
Great explanation. Now that I've turned 64, downhill is now on my bucket list !
I can think of plenty of things more thrilling than wanting to maximize the chances of breaking as many bones as possible for fun.
My thighs were on fire just sitting here and watching it!!
Imagine trying to get your confidence back after something like that. . .
Maura_The_Mango yea
For a dedicated man it's not a problem, I had a nasty off-road crash (enduro bike) and started doing it again on my first chance, same speed, same insanity, just weird feeling in the testicles first few times
He’s not going to ski professionally again
The key is to be confident all the time.....currently in line for surgery for MCL and ACL tears
I’ve been in a similar accident, dislocated my shoulder and fractured my skull after colliding with a snowboarder when I was going down a diamond run at 14 and now 21 and my confidence is still shot, I have ptsd and major anxiety when going down green runs at my local ski resort to the point that my goggles get filled with my tears, I almost feel like I’ll never be the same but I’m working as a liftie and slowly trying to get back on my feet, it’s hard :(
Imagine trying to take off skii boots with a dislocated knee
I was thinking... how in the heck did his legs get bent like that... oh yeah, he has really heavy ski boots on
I saw a guy once in a hockey game with a dislocated ankle. His foot looked like it was screwed on backwards. When the paramedics came and tried to get the skate off the screams were blood curdling.
Happened to me but not a break, rather a heavy sprain of the medial ligament as well as semi-membraneous tendon and quadriceps, and they had to hold my knee while they pulled it off... Painful as hell. They do have the option to saw the boot in the worst case scenario.
If you step on the heel of the boot you are taking off, with the other heel- they just pop straight off. I do it regularly with wellingtons
He would have been better off with a broken leg. Knee dislocation is a limb threatening injury and definite,y career ending. That sucks!
Jay S especially because he has it in both his knees..
are you a physician?
what sucks is with knee dislocation you usually end up tearing your acl , mcl and cartiledge
he is ok, now he get angry about only one thing - no olympics.
S Its too hard for these people to figure that out lol
Dislocated both knees but nothing broken ! (Google)
Ligaments...all of them !
Worse than a fracture : [
Whew! So everything's fine. He skied the next day!
People are saying he is back skiing
KoivuTheHab dislocating isnt breaking, which is why its called dislocating and not breaking
Now I'm no doctor but im pretty sure legs don't bend that way
Yah agreed
When downhill skiers crash it is almost never their fault.
The massive set of stones between their legs messes with their balance.
Beastly Dookie lmao
Shut up my nigga
lezhi jiang YOOOOOO
Downhill skiing? Can you ski uphill?
@@elliotskotte5324 Yeah actually, it's called skiing or crosscountry skiings in some places
Skier: I got this!
His legs: Your free trial ends now.
i feel so sorry for everybody that crashes like that... like they really dont desrve it... nobody does...😪
lol i literally just thought of that and then i saw dis comment
It's part of the sport, they know what they are risking.
EisPlays i know it is, i ski too.. but it’s still not very nice to see it.
LaraDaShiat it's really not, you are right :/
Paul Gooney Not when you also do this sport.. It kinda messes with your mind a bit when you’re up there in the start house... But yeah your opinion:)
Me knowing watching this is going to be gross, making me stressed and shocked,
*clicks in the video and watches it twice*
🙈
The fact they replied 😂 ☝🏽
Bruh his leg was flopping like a noodle 🤢
🥲
1:45--RED ALERT!!!
THANK YOU
THANK YOU I was looking to see when to be prepared for it
Oh man. On the razor's edge. How beautiful it is without commentary.
I guess this is always a possibility when you're going down pretty much a sheet of ice at almost 80mph...
A possibility for skiers 😂 his left ski couldnt handle the pressure of the turn so it detached causing his leg to get twisted
What a marvelous strong performance throughout, he still did his best.
I guess my day didn't go all that bad today...
Wow. Poor guy. I hope he has a fast recovery.
He was flying! Run looked very good overall. Respect the effort. Recover soon.
Just waiting for whatever to happen was anxiety inducing, 'cause he was going so fast.
To Bob from team Canada your interview was so inspiring well done!! I am sure your children are proud of you as their Dad. Best wishes for the future. The Invictus games the best for respect to all❤❤
pretty much downhill skating with very long skates. had that this weekend at stevens pass, ice with a little dust on top. just managing to catch and edge is a feat and these guys are going full tilt for time. makes you appreciate just how good these guys are
They ski right on the edge of out of control. It was cool watching him ski without any commentary. Just the sound of his skis.
Wow, nasty, good run until then, such a fine line to be negotiated.
I remember watching this following the summer Olympics in 2016. Downhill is huge in upstate NY. I’m glad he survived this.
He was doing so good. He or the course was very smooth. Looks like he steered his upper body into the turn which instant transfer his weight to the left ski and made the right ski go straight instead of turn.
The most broken a leg has ever been without completely falling off
that guy looked so smooth up until something went wrong, so fast
The one and only time I tried skiing was at Lake Tahoe. My friends told me that it would be no problem for me since I was “athletically inclined”. They took me to the top of the Olympic downhill run from the 64 Olympics. All I said was - “eff how do I stop”? It took me all day to get down, going about 10 feet and laying back against the mountain. Never tried it again.
Yeah, my friends did that at another ski resort. Took me to learn skiing, never done it in my life, at the top of where they held the Olympics. Bless my heart, I tried. and ski patrol took me to the ER at the bottom and I got my knee surgery. Change friends. I finally did. Regards.
Me every 5 seconds: "Oh no this is it. He's gonna crash now."
Happy to see Valentin in Lake Louise last week.
look closely at his legs when he bounces off the net, legs don't bend like that normally lol
Thanks algorithm, this is exactly what I wanted to see while looking for tips on how to ski.
Looks like fun, thanks for posting!
That’s brutal to watch. Optimistically I say that hope he had a full recovery.
Agreed on both fronts.
Holy cow ! That had to hurt severely ! You can see where his leg is broke at !!
I know nothing about sports nor Olympics, but watching this man ski was impressive and incredible. If I were hitting the speeds this guy was id be leaving a brown trail behind me
Well that was unexpected. Get well soon. ❤️
1:40 is just a cliff basically
I have skied down double black diamond trails like that at Alta, Utah. Steep double diamond sounds impressive, but when it's deep, soft snow even an intermediate skier can do it easily.
@@riproar11 Yeah, but you didn’t on an ice World Cup piste
I hate watching videos like this knowing something is going to go wrong. Every turn I was clenching.
Can't watch... yet cannot turn away!
ooo, owww, the hurts to watch, the way his leg twists around like that.
We all hope he can recover.
Hope you have a speedy recovery sir
The entire run was on the edge. BIG BIG BALLS.
God bless that poor guy 🙏❤️
Ouch!!😖 that looked PAINFUL
i have never felt this much anxiety within so little time.
Wishing him all the best for his recovery. That crash looked sickening especially seeing his leg bend. 😭
Ouch!!.... that's more than broken. Hope he recovered well
Me at the Ski rental in Czech Republic: Yoo my Ski poles are Bend af. Could i please have another pair.
Staff: No no no they are aerodynamically optimized.
I hope he’s good now! 🙏
“Break a leg!”
Skier:
Watching this while being a ski racer is it like do I really want to watch it them my curiosity’s like yes you do watch it and now I’m scarred lol
How big was that mountain? It seemed to last forever.
Wow did not expect that kind of break. Hope he recovers.
Luckily he is recovered and on snow again. Such a dedication
Or stupidity
@@dannydorko7075 Only stupidity if you don't know the risks. This guy has balls of titanium
I don’t see how anyone goes this fast without crashing. I would be on my butt all the way down. I hope he recovered well.
How'd he wipe out? Catch an edge or did the binding pop?
Respect to you
Why am I searching this on RUclips
Holy hell they are moving along at a good clip
When a leg breaks, it don’t matter what country you’re in. You’ll always say, “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Brings me back when I broke my femur on a jump. Couldn’t show down got about 25 feet in the air going downhill and the ski didn’t snap off and it twisted my leg. Worst pain imaginable.
That's why you do not say: "Break a lag!" to a skier.
Leg
His mistake was trying to put feet down and get up on skis which he looks like he thought he still had. What a painful crash.... glad he lived, but damn.
At what point did his leg break? Did it break going into the turn or after?
Couldn’t even imagine getting air at that speed these dudes are crazy but awesome
Omg I can literally see his leg snap 🤢
I was scared for him the entire time watching this, gotta hand it to these skiers it's so steep and fast that must require immense skills.
What happened, did the bind broke?
Damn. Hope he’s ok man
Well at least he could apply some ice straight away
I’ve came to the conclusion that all these years I’ve been skiing is what made my knees so terrible.... it’s gotta be...
Ever taken any especially bad falls? Ever got treatment for them? Ligament damage, and especially meniscus damage, can ruin your knees over time. You can have an ACL tear and not even know it without MRI
My god, it sounds like a gunshot when his left ski breaks off. That's incredible.
Courage needed, before and after. Good luck Valentin
What a Athlete, sucks he broke his leg but what a run, incredible.
Agreed on all counts!
Ahhh... my my thirst for blood is quenched for today. Thank you, RUclips.
Dont look up Reinstadler ski crash...
First viewing: that’s not bad. Slow mo: oh. Oh, no.
😬
Where and when was this?
Thats pretty metal
ok can we just talk about how he tore the gate in half @ 1:45... that’s incredible
Skiing so fast you start to sound like fighter jet
✈️
Broke my arm while cycling. Now RUclips recommends only these videos to me. 😂😂
Compression force catching inside edge causes the splits and pops both knees. Its all about ligament and tendon damage
Clearly not enough pizza.
James Stimpson exactly damn Jerry’s forget to pizza
All I could think was "LEGS DONT BEND THAT WAY"
I feel terrible for this man, to train that hard for all those years just for this to happen. Wishing him a speedy recovery and hoping he gets another shot at the next Winter Olympics
This was uploaded in 2017 but yeah
1:45 is when he loses it!
Every single kid I went to school with that was into downhill skiing had at least one major broken bone, torn ligaments and/or dozens of stitches.
worth it
Ive been skiing since I was 15....with ZERO injuries...and I consider myself decently above intermediate. I just ski within my ability.
TheJoeman11 try going 80+ mph
When skiing goes well we tend to cross the line from bravery to irresponsibility, that's when we fall. Skiing is probably the most enjoyable sports when you're doing well, and also one where you can endlessly challenge yourself.
Bad Cornflakes "ski within my abilities" .......... Read
Damn, that’s going to leave a mark!
What’s the DIN setting for downhill professionals? 12?
