CRASH COMPILATION - 2021 Luge World Championships @ Königssee

- Please enjoy the FIL's fantastic video+streaming site video.fil-luge....
I guess not everybody can nail the double chicane at the exit of Königssee's famous Turbodrome/Kreisel!
Okay, gotta school a whole bunch of you on luge and ice tube sports in general
· Modern ice tubes are incredibly expensive structures designed by a combination of former and active ice tube athletes (from bobsleigh, luge and skeleton) plus top-level engineers. For example, the ice tube built for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games cost more than 100 million dollars. In other words, if you crash it's mostly your fault so, you know, GET GOOD or get out of the tube.
· Less than 5% of the competitors in the 2021 Luge Worlds failed to finish all of their runs. The actual fail rate is even lower if you take into account how most lugers completed all of their 4-5 competitive runs.
· Yes, you steer the sled. If you pay attention the video you can see the sled moving left-right on the straights. You can also steer the sled with your body weight in skeleton (the face-down face-first version of this) and in bobsleigh you mostly move around by steering with the movable blades (shifting your body weight pays a role but it's not the dominant one).
· Ice tube sports are tremendously expensive, it's not a hobby sport, you don't do it for fun outside maybe taking an open one-week course. Most of the ice tube athletes grew up very close to an ice tube or a relative was an athlete before them. All modern ice tubes offer 2 to 4 different starting points so inexperienced athletes can start their career with a shorter slower run.
· 2-men sled competitions exist nowadays as a "legacy event". It made sense 80-90 years ago when the courses were a lot flatter and 2 people together could go a lot faster than someone going solo. The FIL is trying to have 2-women sled competitions at the World Championships soon and also have them for the 2026 Olympic Games.
yeah but what a weird sport this is
Wow, thanks for ‘schooling’ me. This whole sport looks like something that maybe people used to do for a bit of fun, and is now being taken wholly too seriously.
Same with MX and SX ex riders usually design the tracks each weekend. They tend to take the health and welfare of the athletes as important. The well being of the athlete is more important than tv ratings.
Wait... Isnt that every sport?....
What's the point of this "sport" if it's not for hobby and fun first? Like why would anyone compete in this if you ain't taking any money from it (since you say it's overly expensive) and you ain't taking any fun out of it?
I know I would want to do it cus it looks fun. I love sledding down slopes.
Thank you for the patronizing explanation of luge. I now have a deeper admiration for the sport.
You win some you luge some
Thank you.
And this time they lugt...
What is this sports name??
Underrated
This deserves more recognition 😂
The designers of those turns are evil, they knew it was gonna be crazy... LOL
So what do you do for a living?
"I wear a one piece suit, and go down ice chutes and slides"
Much respect for anyone who does this. They are all a bit nuts, lol
You gotta be fearless to do this at all let alone at the highest level. My respect to all the athletes out there
Can't blame anyone who crashes on this chicane. By far the hardest I've been one back when I was still doing luge.
Can I know your real name? I've been following ice tube sports since names like Andre Lange, Ivo Ruegg and Armin Zoeggler ruled 👍🏻
@@DanArnets1492 Sorry, but I don't feel comfortable sharing my full legal name. I luged for a Thuringian club till my mid teens. Königssee was the last chicane I've been on while active. I acted as a trainer for the young lads for 2 years afterwards. So I surely wasn't a name in the sport.
Most winter sports are considered wealthy people's games (Skiing, Snowboarding, etc...) But this takes the cake.

I'm no Luge driver, but the chicane section seem intentionally evil to me.
It's a competition, easy things don't separate the great from the mediocre

Faceplanting through the chicanes
Nope....was def hilarious to me 😂. Glad they're ok tho
Yeah you're not the only one hahah
Him holding the luge with proper form despite sliding entirely on his face makes this absurd in the most impressive fashion, he makes the whole thing look on purpose
"Wow! What happened, Alex?"
"Yeah, they crashed."
"Thanks, Alex."
A jomboy breakdown would be so perfect. Especially of he ad-libbed over when they cut to the coaches freaking out
This is more exciting then watching who wins.
It's one of few sports where excellence can look "boring" but it's exciting either way - Seeing the difference between these crashes and the fastest runs makes you see how much you have to drive the sled to be quick
That whole double thing is just nuts Who thought of that ?
The guys from Jackass probably, seems like something they would do for kicks
@@MikeJones-qn1gz - Nope, it's a very old idea coming from back when competitive sledding was slower and done in natural tracks - 2 guys were able to go much faster and it also has the teamwork factor, nowadays it's mostly a legacy thing (plus the teamwork thing is still very important).
That one particular section had more crashes than others. Design flaw?
No, intentional. It's not supposed to be easy...
The world’s most epic faceplant. That first guy was PLANKING down the course on his face lol
The Broom and the Fan brought me here XD
I’m a little late to the party but same here
you would think that after multiple people fail on the same part of the same track, that they would lessen there critique and show at least some thought about maybe the track being the mistake or at least showing concern that its clearly a very difficult part and needs top level skill to get past.
4:10 couldn’t help it 😂😂😂
One sec you’re luging, the next you’re rowing a boat
The "rowing" is the technique you use to start so... 🤷🏻♂️
@@DanArnets1492 it just looked funny. No offense to the sport. The amount of potential danger is ridiculous
@@anandr1385 - It's definitely tough on your body when you crash, the courses are all ice-covered concrete tubes, there are 0 soft spots!
Really enjoyed the lady commentary, very entertaining.
These people have balls of steel.
It's a really "critical" sport - It might not look too challenging at first but a small mistake can end up in a whole lot of pain 😅

Halfway through the video, I was hoping someone would make it to the finish line safely.
I forgot I clicked on the video to watch people crash...
"she's lost contact with her sled" she's fallen off mate
The FIL only considers you've finished a course if you're in contact with your sled, that includes if you're with your ass on the ice but still touching it with a foot or hand - It's a very important difference!
When too many cars crash on the same place ... maybe the problem is not the drivers, maybe its the road!
Only 5% crashed during the 2021 World Championships, not bad at all
My son trained in the early 90s at Lake Placid before new location. He also did natabon ( spelt wrong) luge in U P Michigan. That was the first form of luge. No banked curves but wooden walls at each turn just like hockey. Each curve you had to adjust your body and sled. Can't explain the position but other lagers would try and break by putting there foot out and hitting sides but would damage ankle. Way more physical but slower speed but need more skills. My xwife and daughter and I were volunteering at track in -50 degree temps and we loved it
Awesome to hear stories from people involved in ice tube sports - Naturbahn luge is the classic/legacy version of this, too bad it's even more niche (IOC still won't allow it in the Olympic Games)
This got to be the funniest and weirdest winter sport 😂
In my opinion, if there's a part of the track that all athletes make mistakes then the problem is with the track not the athletes
... except only 5% of the sleds crashed out of the 2021 Worlds and not everyone was in those wiggly esses
what's the point of the track when it isn"t challenging?
Is it just me or there's something seriously wrong with that unusual chicane.
Both single & double luges went off at basically the same location....just saying! 🤔
Spending years and years and years practicing for this moment. Then the whole world is watching that moment, and it all falls apart. So heartbreaking.
You wouldn't have the thrill of victory without a bit of a challenge and the agony of defeat peeking around the corner
What I learned from this: section before chicane is too fast and that chicane is either too tight or unnecessary
That's where you're wrong, kiddo - This ice tube is actually proof that you don't need very high speeds to make an ice tube challenging. This ice tube is like 20-30kph slower on its faster parts than the one in Whistler (used for Vancouver 2010) or the one in Yanqing (used for Beijing 2022 as I'm typing this)
That corner is nasty! Wow!
6:48 They were SO close I feel the frustration through the screen
In this track (and some others too), you need MORE than just cross the finish line to get a valid time: you need to climb the slowdown uphill part entirely - Even if they had crossed the line, the run would've been declared as "incomplete" for that reason
"No Jimmy, there's only room for one on the sled." Jimmy: "I'll just lay right on top of you :)"
I understand ice tubes are incredible expensive to build. But you can build something wrong? With growth of the sport, maybe the speed they run now doesn't work with the old track?
The first guy did half the course in full faceplant mode. Tongue on the ice and everything.
One of the craziest sports I've ever seen.
It's really not a sport. It;s just a spectacle riding daddys money.
everyone seems to crash in the same spot everytime
that shicane was destroying people
This sport lookes like it's tons of fun, but also something that's super dangerous if things go really badly...
then again, it's a sport where you hit speeds that rival that of motorsports, danger is to be expected.
Anyway, is there a reason why these people retain their sledding-pose even when face down? I assume having your limbs tugged in is better to protect them from injury, but seeing people slide down the tube facedown without raising their arms to protect the head or face looks scary.
But it's a baller sport ngl.
Can't say for sure, but I think you are correct. Keeping limbs in means you can't get caught on anything. I was told to do that if I feel in white water river rafting (different dangers, but the idea is the same).
Idk why this video feel like it’s from 2008
A bump can ruin your race in Luge
Nürburgring Nordschleife: am I a joke to you?
That track looked brutal
It's not the longest ice tube but it certainly has a couple of tricky spots
Y’all notice how they crashed in the same place every time
3:07 -ish... it's reassuring to know that they teach you how to crash a luge while staying safe (seriously!), because you could be seriously hurt if you don't know what to do during a wipeout.
I remember when I played wheelchair basketball and at the first practice every season, our coaches taught us how to fall out of our wheelchairs safely if we took a fall on the court.
The "lessons on crashing" regarding ice tube sports is more about "when to give up", when to just stop trying to go on - They also teach you what pose you should adopt if you've completely lost the sled AKA put yourself in a way so you don't gain speed
офигенный спорт. вот бы так прокатиться))
So basically you just slide on your face lol
0:52 made me laugh so hard
You’re not alone
Hahaha, I missed it the first time though.
@@FranktheDachshund So did the announcers. You couldn’t tell he was face down until they played it back in slow motion.
Surprised this dangerous sport is still a thing these days
I find it hilarious when they just slide on their face 😭
You know you shouldn't laugh, you know it's probably quite painful, but you just have to laugh.
I love the cool running reference!! That guys a legend for that one!! FELL THE RHYTHM!!!! FEEL THE RHYME!!!! GET ON UP!!!! ITS BOB SLED TIME!!!!!!

A combination of top-level engineers and former pro ice tube athletes (from both luge, bobsleigh and skeleton) - Modern ice tubes are incredibly expensive to build (the one used for Beijing 2022 cost over 100 million dollars for example) so it's no joke
I’ll never forget that one in Vancouver
Me neither, if I can remember. We all witnessed him flying into a pole right? Or am I tripping.
We just gonna speed past the fact the first guy slid like a quarter mile on his fuckin face
He used his teeth to slow down
That's why the helmet has this big screen in front, so you can end up like that and still be safe from big injuries
That was epic, right?! Imagine the sound reverberating in his head and throughout the helmet while his face was dragged that far 2cm from the ice, protected only by thin piece of hard plastic. I'll bet he was saying "HUH?!" For the next 20 minutes. LOL!
Mid 90s and my son was trying to get on development team in lake placid. While racing in I believe nynex event that included employees but not at start point for them. After going through the s bends just entering the first huge banked curve. He banged something and ended up in the air and swung the sled resetting himself and landed on sled on track and kept going. We were there and thought he would crash. It never bothered him except it was a slow time..
everyone lost control in the same place
There's this weird narrow "S" moment. From what i recall, some commentator might even critic the course if crashes happen too often in the same place
The Agony of Defeat Long jump Ski Crash in NY IS STILL, the greatest wipe out of a Man without Machine diaster of SPORTS. STILL,,,, and always be, mannn what a sight of aweeee.

Sorry that I do not understand this sport, if accidents like that happen so often, shouldn't they modify the tracks a bit more?
Nah, accidents usually mean there's a place where the margin of error is not too wide, you can actually modify your trajectory quite a bit using your bodyweight - Only less than 5% of the competitors of the 2021 World Championships failed to finish all of their runs
The Track dies Not exist Anymore

Is learning to crash safely part of luge training or is it just something you roll with when it happens?
There are "tips and tricks" like in most sports but, like with other fast sports, there are so many possible scenarios that you can't prepare for all
👌😂👍the first one the sled rode on her! She became the 🛷 sled! Lmfao 😂
What did they think to put 2 guys together ?
One steers to the left, and the other to the right?
One has the circuit plans and tells the driver about it like a rally ?
Or they are just couples that can not stand to be separated ?🙂
Here's a bit of a history lesson:
· Luge started as a sport in "natural tracks" (ice-covered paths you could drive a car on during the Summer). Back then, 2-person sled made sense because they'd push harder, have more inertia due to the extra weight and they'd have to be really synchronized to turn nicely. You can still see that side of the sport if you look for the name "naturbahn".
· Once the more professional side of the sport moved to the current ice-covered concrete tubes, EVERYTHING was moved there... including 2-person events. Due to the much higher speeds 2-person sleds can achieve, the FIL (FIFA but for luge, you know) makes them start at a lower point in the track. The sled is a bit bigger than the standard one and you still need to be very synchronized with your partner but it's true that 2-person events makes more sense back in naturbahn.
PS: Pairs are made of brothers, friends or just 2 people that were decent at going solo but noticed they could be great at doubles.
@@DanArnets1492 thanks for explaining some history, idk why but a few hours ago the thought suddenly popped in my head "how TF does one even 'get into' sled sports like luge and bobsleigh?" so then this lead me down a rabbit hole of curiosity and questions.
I feel like it would be a lot easier to get into luge than bobsleigh, since there's la lot more accessible/"natural" tracks that people can use to luge recreationally. But bobsleigh, there's very few accessible/natural tracks in the world, and the equitment seems less accessible to.
I still don't know exactly how one goes from "I want to do these sports" to actually doing the sport. For example, Do people bobsleigh recreationally, or do you have to sponsored to try out for professional teams to even begin bobsleigh?
@@skatmanscott In the US there are recruiting events where they invite track and field athletes that might be interested.. Most are like, lol, that looks nuts, or lol, that looks cold, or whatever. But a few might be interested and get into the system. It helps to live near a facility that has a track (Utah, Lake Placid, and that's about it) because no one makes money in the this sport so you have to keep your day job. So no one really gets into this recreationally. Most go straight into the Olympic training program from the start. And of course a lot of those quit before getting to the Olympics. It takes commitment since, as mentioned, no one really makes money. Other countries are different I am sure.
@@skatmanscott - The IBSF (bobsleigh+skeleton's "FIFA") has annual training camps in Igls/Innsbruck (I don't know the pricing). The 2nd option is to pay like €1000 (skeleton or monobob) or €1500 (2-man bob) to get trained in St. Moritz for a week and you can also do it for fun, it's not reserved to young athletic people.
Bobsleigh's problem is how expensive it is. A good sled is like €30k on the used market and some sleds used in competition can't even be bought.
@@knutthompson7879 - I don't think anyone's making a dime outside of maybe the Germans (there are like 7-8 bobsleds in their national championships). Also, the Germans have been sponsored by companies such as Playboy and DHL over the years, that's usually indirect proof there is some money.

@@afox1689 - You're wrong, each ice tube has between 3 and 4 different starting points. When you're a kid (or an inexperienced adult), you only do the final few meters until the coaches see you're stable enough to go faster (start higher).

Chicanes in Formula 1, great idea. Luge? Not so much.

This is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life lmao
New here. What if the design is truly flawed? Like no one can complete it. Do the athletes get a do-over?
Not really... Here's how the design of ice tubes work:
· Computer simulations and use of proven proportions and such
· Certain phases of constructions might include controlled test runs
· Once things are done, you have simulated competitions with several sleds
· Then you get your first real IBSF/FIL ranked competition
The 2 worst "beginnings" of ice tubes are probably the ones used for Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018. In the one used for Vancouver 2010, around 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they had a IBSF World Cup round and there was an extremely tricky right-left combination that caused many crashes to the point it was nicknamed "50/50" (an exaggeration). Section was rebuilt before the Olympic Games. Then in the one used for Pyeongchang 2018, during a IBSF World Cup round too again 12-15 months before the Olympic Games, they discovered there was a step-down near-jump because the builders (not the designers) miscalculated and didn't join 2 sections properly. This time it was worse and got solved only like 2-3 months before the Olympic Games.
