Thier not to bad of a transmission. People just overheat them and never change the fluid. Then they have the “I know a guy who can do it cheaper” rebuild it. And losing reverse is usually user error not letting the transmission engage reverse before accelerating.

Re my previous post, I live in Australia where we used to have the GM (Holden) Commadore. I had 2 of these with the 3.8 litre engine and the same gl60e tranny. A lot of owners had to have rebuilds after about 200,000 km. I knew about this so made sure the fluid was changed every 30,000km and flushed every 60.000. Both station wagons loaded with tools of trade did 500,000km with no transmission problems whatsoever and engine oil change every 6000km.

You might not think this is exciting but I have done a few of these in my lifetime, always amazes me how the job is done, you have this routine down pat and with the "magic" of TV you have it down and out in about 20 minutes lol. That truck looks like a normal Vegas vehicle not a spot of rust, I am looking forward to the rebuilt/new one going in, your use of the Torch is smart no sense in fighting the bolts on the Exhaust you would not get them out very easily. Also taking the time to mark parts, put bolts back....once you walk away from the job you will never remember where everything goes, kudos...

unsure that i can do this job (based on the transitive property of "if Mr O can do it, I can too"), but i definitely appreciate the play-by-play! My 2001 2WD Silverado is similar-ish so it helps to learn either way.

Gotta admit, watching this, I don't miss wrenching for a living anymore. Though always wrenching on my own terms the last 20 years for family and friends.
So far, so good on my 02 Z71.... I keep up and the maintenance, but don't put a whole lotta faith on the trans. Nice to see the formula.
    Keep up the good work!

I had a 94 Chevy that my 3rd son wrecked it. That was the third time my boys wrecked it. I said I’m done and started parting it out. I sold the transmission and a few weeks later my friend said he would give me his truck if I fixed the Chevy. So I put a new tranny and front end on it got it finished and my friend backed out of the deal. Kind of glad because my first boy bought it back and now has it. We had totally rebuilt the engine when he was 16 and the engine is still going strong 14 years later.

I sold at ton of 4L60’s back in the day. GM SRTA transmissions had a 36/100 warranty coverage so it was an easy sell. I replaced a lot of 4L60’s under warranty due to the cost of repairing them exceeded parts and labor under GM cost assembly analysis.

Use magnet to see if draining fluid in transfer case bends while flowing out. Should take about hour half to remove that transmission. I usually removed the drive shafts then shift cable then transfer case. I used to do that 4l60 in about 55 minutes to hour. see how he drops transfer case that takes stength to do overhead about 80-110 pounds case.
