Thanks, I have been working the bo staff and was hoping to find a form with spinning in it. The spinning part is an excellent upper body workout for an old dog in his mid-40s. Keeps the heart healthy.
What other sneaky creatures do you have in that small China? A turtle, some dogs what next a panda? hahaha love your videos! Greetings from New Zealand!
Jake, did you know your tortoise almost bit your ankle when you were filming this video? I was just curious to see if you watched it. At 7:25 in the video.
Yes! I love the Bo Staff! Your times in order: 18.8 seconds, 20.4 seconds, 21.9 seconds, 22.0 seconds, 31.7 seconds, 1.36.2 minutes, I didn't time the bonus one. Thank you so much again for your videos! I'm gonna train the kata as soon as I'm done watching this video! I'm looking forward to buying your dvds, I made a practice chainwhip and I'm loving it so far! Can't wait for October now :)
Thanks Jake! I have been using these spins 3-4 times a week as a conditioning tool. In the words of Inigo Montoya, "I am not left handed..." And my head thanks me for it... OUCH!
Thank you so much for these tutorials, Jake! I'm a firedancer learning to combine contact staff and bo staff techniques for the entertainment of others (and also because it's crazy fun for me!). I put together a beginner playlist exclusively from your videos, and once I master those, I'll add some of the more advanced tutorials you offer. Looking forward to the DVD!
Your temperament is wonderful to see, keep the flame, keep up the great work and always keep your amazing persona, because to often you see these teachers that think they are the Grand Pubba, when we first start to feel power, speed, sometimes our ego jumps in. That is where a great Master comes into the picture and knocks us down a bit, then we realise how stupid we were, we learn a valuable lesson, "Some never do". What I mostly wanted to say is your personality is wonderful, your temperament is wonderful and you have a very good grasp of styles and systems. Oh About, "Kata" verses, "Form", any time a student or someone in the club would say Kata, we would laugh and call them a traitor. When I started back in the late sixties, know one knew what kung fu was. When the word would pop up, the Karate Teachers of the day would say it would never work, its to flowery, its this and that, what most people do not realise is there are literally hundreds of styles and system of Chinese martial arts that are very different. The Chinese use many words for forms, The Japanese use Kata and as you already know the difference is Checkers to Chess, I always tell the students if you have little time to train, always better to train a style, if you have a lot of time better to train a system with all the pieces of the pie, with philosophy, history, meditation, Ancient weapons, throwing weapons, only to keep the historical records alive, so much more. And lastly I truly wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful job you have done with your site. Favorite sayings", The teeth are hard and fall out, the tongue is soft and it remains. Pain is joy, and joy is knowledge Thank you Sincerely Sifu Ky Fiedler Master Instructor Ying Yee, Luk Hup Bah Fah. Master Instructor Tai Liu Chuan Fa Instructor Chinese Kempo Our Grand master taught us the signature techniques of Wing Chun, Choy Lay Fut, White Eyebrow, Hung Gar, Southern and Northern Eagle and Mantis, and many more styles. After Forty years plus I find I am just a student, like everyone else, students ask me where I learn, I tell them from the students. I love the look I get. But it is the truth.
I love your staff videos and I'm slowly but surely learning with mine, but I was wondering my sais came In and I've watched all your sai videos but was wondering if you could do more on advanced maneuvers. Thank you if you post some.

Fair play jake. Ur skill is only just outmatched by ur passion. I'm a 1st kyu karateka from the UK. Lost most if my sight but refuse to let that stop me. I use a heavy solid oak Bo. Bloody hurts when u smack urself with that on a spin workout... its either my right ankle or the back of my head... Arrrgh. . Nice one mate. Laterz.
30 spins 30 seconds 32 seconds reverse. Would love to see you perform the mountain technique, shaolin staff. I guess your right handed but basically ambidextrous as you train your weaknesses and strengths
Bo Staff Spinning Fastest Ever & Staff Kata. Let's have a friendly competition and see who is faster at spinning the bo staff! Time me and let me know my speed in the comments below! At the end of this video is a Bo Staff Tao Lu or Kata! Enjoy:
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace You got number 3 in 26 seconds. I did it in 25.33 seconds. I have trained with the staff for about three years though.
what type of wood is your staff made from? I want to make one to practice but I don't have a staff fit to me, to short and too thin. I tend to ask a carpenter to make one but I don't know about staff and type of wood
Greetings i was wondering if these techniques are unique to the Bo staff or can they be applied to the Jo staff (short staff)? Please someone answer my question.
More soft weapons!!! I started with your 9 section steel whip videos, and have been applying that to rope dart/meteor hammer( well actual i guess I'm using a meteor wrench, but it works the same) I'm stoked about the new dvd's, but will shoot you a message on fb regarding a minor concern on it..
I hate working out with weights, etc., I earned two belts in Kung Fu like 40 years ago (I'm 65), but never went any farther. I've been looking on RUclips for some way of working out that I would enjoy, I believe I just found it. Your staff looks like it's 6 foot, I went on Amazon and they have them from 4 to 10 foot, the ones around 6ft varied by a few inches each, I want to get the right length for me as a total beginner. I'm 5'11'. What length should I start with?
What are your thoughts about doing this with a weighted staff or a pipe filled with something to give weight? Also any idea where I could get an English reading of "Journey to the West" ?
Jake; I had a question I been wondering about for a while. How are training with a sword VS a Bi staff similar or does it depend on your particular martial art you're learning. I know the sword has a blade and you alot of jousting or spinning with Bo Staff. I just wanted know are they alot different or is sword better because it cuts?

Great video and even better message at the end!
I can't wait until 60fps becomes standard on RUclips. Then I'll be able to see all of those spins in butter-smooth HD.
Sir, can you please upload a video of short stick striking

Funny thing is, I was legit enjoying the fuck out of my pizza when you asked to let you know if I was enjoying my pizza. Well good sir, I am! c:

Im enjoying eating a taco while watching you
I bashed a kneecap the other night being a dummy. I feel ya with the elbow.

Awesome videos. How does someone figure out what size staff is right from them? I am 5'9"
There's a turtle in the background.... or tortoise....
either way, cool video!
What type of tortoise do you have?
3:00! There is a tortoise! Do you own him? (You can tell I love tortoises) Great vid btw! So cool! I wish I could do that with the Bo Staff!
Excellent workout! Your pet was more suited to your "Ninja Turtles" workout though.
Now do it all again with the 3 section ;)
approximate dimensions of your staff?
this is also interesting to learn but nunchuck is my favorite
Looked like his right arm was faster on the second set of spins he did. So I'm guessing he's right handed.
Go slow and show the proper hand grips for the various spins.
Does anyone else notice the turtle moving in the background?
Jake; I had a question I been wondering about for a while. How are training with a sword VS a Bi staff similar or does it depend on your particular martial art you're learning.
