Ah - in pantoland, May McFettridge (googlable) is a panto dame, so May is actually John in real life. A rather British thing - the panto Dame. It's a man pretending to be a woman. Everybody knows that it is a man, but accepts them as a very strange woman. Traditionally, the principle boy - let's say, prince charming - would be played by a girl, but the princess would also be a girl. The dame was a boy playing girl, but in a non-believable way. Traditionally the prince would also wear tights (hose?) This was years before our current gender discussions and oddly, nobody was confused at all? That's the UK for you.
