How MUCH it COST to own my FERRARI F430 for 3 YEARS - In Detail
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 сен 2019
- I owned my Ferrari F430 for almost 3 years. In that time I drove it well over 20,000 miles and did all the maintenance and modifications myself. The DIY servicing of the car probably saved me about half the cost if not more rather than taking it to a dealership or professional shop.
In this video I break down how much I spent per year and per mile on the car by different categories - Interest, Insurance, Parts, and Maintenance. Of note, the car NEVER left me stranded and never had maintenance that I could not fix myself.

$14,000 depreciation in 3 years for an exotic is not bad at all.
it was already between 8-12 years old when he got it, if he had brough it brand new, he'd be looking at a depreciation of 100k
Given I put 20k+ miles on it! :)
I've had my 08 car since 2012. In that time it gained about $15k up to 2018 and has now sunk back to just over what I paid. I think they'll now level off but depreciation is not going to be a major factor. I feel for guys who bought new 488s and have lost $100k in a year, and they look to sink further in the face of the Tributo. 458s and 488s now occupy the same territory, which seems a bit weird!
Actually isnt at all...many normal cars lose that much value.
and the depreciation is rather arbitrary since buyers for such cars are not plentiful, and thus the selling prices can vary widely if the seller wants to quickly move the car.
Man, definitely some great stuff in this video - you didn't just buy a dream car, you DROVE it, and you drove the heck out of it. And you DIY'd the work. That makes such a big difference in what we (we in the general sense) can afford to own for a car. Hope we get to meet someday, you seem like such a down to earth car guy.
True. I drove mine more than most Ferrari owners do in 10 years. Lol!
@@normalguysupercar Yah, and think that's a good thing. I mean, cars are for driving, right?
When I saw the clip of the oil gushing out, it reminded me of my first oil change on my 2018 Ford Mustang GT. I learned from that day to buy an oil drain pan with a super wide opening.
Seems like a cool, genuine guy.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for all your videos. Very straight forward info. I've had a lot of older Chevelles and muscle cars but am going to jump into the Ferrari world soon. Probably the 430.
You could lease a new M3 for $1000 a month, or have a Ferrari! I would go Ferrari every time!
Yup!
Leasing a car is always a bad idea.
Megan Hurlbert not unless it's a business expense lol
Just buy a c8 corvette. Cheaper, faster and much better build quality anddddd best of all you can actually drive it more than once a month lol.
@@MEGLITatUT if you have a business its actually a pretty decent idea. Better than finance or cashing it. Either give it to the scum gov or enjoy it.
Great video, thanks for the detailed description.
You got me laughing at 0:56 "the maintenance was simple stuff" hahahhaa that part of the video you put in had me rolling
Yes! Been waiting for this for a while! Thanks for putting out consistent, great material!
You're welcome
A. THANK YOU for driving your cars! I freaking love seeing mileage being put on these stallions. B. I hope you are off on the 360's going back up by about a year, I'm hoping they hit a low next year (as I'm shopping them for my "over the hill" birthday) but I agree that the 430 is more and more becoming the tantalizing deal.
Well the 360s have already started creeping up... Not sure it they can go much higher unless the 430s start to go up.
Fantastic Dan... You saved a bundle doing the repairs yourself. Excellent video as always 😁😁
Thank you!
Great video and the information you put forward is golden! - the depreciation isn't that bad at all. Given your mileage was slightly high (for this particular car), if it was lower then the car would be worth more thus less depreciation. But you enjoyed it and you're happy at the end. So that's what matters most!
Yes it's all about the smiles
Excellent cost breakdown, 2nd one I've seen on RUclips, 1st on a Ferrari F430. 👍🏼 Great Video...
Thanks
Dude great video! Love the breakdown! Gives me hope for owning one in the future
Yes indeed
Thank you for posting this. Extremely interesting
You're welcome
The saved labour costs are significant.... :-)
Oh yeah big time. $150-200/hour!
Haha! This guy is awesome! Thanks for breaking it all down! Always wondered what were the costs!
You're welcome
I had an 2002 E39 BMW M5 and drove it for 48k miles (starting at ~59k). It was $0.74/mile in total including depreciation. I had a 2013 Mini that I also put 48k miles on (starting at 16k) and it was about $0.59/mile. Both cars were self maintained and driven hard. I now have a 99' BMW M3 and it will probably be $0.40/mile doing the same daily+race car. A long term Toyota or Honda if bought new can be less than $0.40/mile. I also have a 99' Oldsmobile that is about $0.20/mile, with half of that being fuel at $0.10/mile.
That's some cool data
Youre the man! Thanks for breaking it down. Please do the same for 458 after 1 year ownership.
Absolutely!
Good review on cost ownership breakdown, you left out fuel cost. I ran some numbers when I bought my 2006' Maserati Gransport coupe, has the same, but a detuned F136 V8 and F1 6 sp drivetrain. I"m a little over a year with ownership, I figure x 3 in cost increase across the board when I step up to a F430 someday. For me the biggest hit will be the upfront purchase price and the higher insurance, I'd like to finance more the half at 3 yrs to keep the loan interest low. You're correct, doing your own work saves a bundle, I'm the same way, I've yet to visit a Ferrari/Maserati dealership.
I don't track fuel costs so I didn't include it
Good job on cost breakdown. Im planning to get a ferrari california and im hoping its cheaper than 36k for 3 years.
Thank you for inspiring me to keep dreaming of getting my own ferrari!
Awesome! Glad to hear this
This guy is just genuine. Great information too.
I appreciate that!
Great video topic. Great job.
Thanks! :)
Thanks for showing the real cost of a supercar. Found your channel from TheStradMan
Thanks!
I don’t mind working on it myself. I’ve always liked the F430 body style but always worried about maintenance costs.
They are pretty simple to work on
This is a great video. The average person does not keep up with expense and has no idea what stuff is costing cars, houses, fun
Yup
Thank you very instructive video ! considering this Naturally Aspirated V8 :) Can I ask which Exhausts you had on this 430 ? sounds amazing!
That was a custom exhaust
@@normalguysupercar awesome… any details on brand etc? Thanks 🙏
Who did you go through on your loan? I was told 25% down minimum. I’m looking to buy now. Thank you in advance.
How much money do I need to pay for its maintenance, along with its petrol each year?
That's not too bad to own the caliber of a car. Definitely helps to work on it yourself forsure! Interesting that it's not too crazy on the upkeep.
Yup! The diy maintenance saved a boatload for sure
Your channel is awesome!
Thank you!
That sounds like a great experience .. I’m buying my first Ferrari finally and I’m not really concerned about depreciation but I’m taking into consideration the maintenance. I passed on a Mclaren due to people kept warning me about mechanical issues .
Mclaren scares me a bit. They aren't diy friendly cars at this time
That's amazing that you did all the work yourself.
Did that hinder you when you sold it?
Aka no dealer invoices for services?
Did buyers knock you for that, the no factory service records?
Not as much as you'd think but probably a little bit.
Cool video. Great info. Missing element: somewhere between $1K and $2K/yr on gasoline.
I didn't record gas costs.
Great real life review on the cost...
Your the bomb Dave. Looking at the 458 ..after I sell my 360. What do you think.
I think the 458 is a much better car
A tip for everyone. The sweet spot for these type of cars is to get them after they are a year or two old and then keep for as long as possible.
...I've bought one of my dreamcars..an Alfa Romeo and I will keep it..as I feel now..forever..🥰..so I agree..think it through and hold on to it!🍀
Why though? Is driving off the lot the point where the depreciation is the steepest drop?
A major bargin you got it for!!! My M6 grand coupe 2014 cost me 92k when I brought it in 2015. With no mods
Yup
Did you do the major and if so how did you learn how? I'm very good with tools but every car is different. Rebuilt my 328 years ago so I know a little about Ferrari
Thanks
The major in a 430 is just changing fluids and stuff like that. It isn't a timing belt service.
Thanks for the video! Should you have included taxes/registration in that calculation or were they not significant enough?
Tax was, registration is like $76/year
@@normalguysupercar Thanks!
Thanks for all your honesty and openness for costs for owning a Ferrari! Cool car!
What a nice honest guy
I think so!
Well thank you.
At how many km they strongly recommend to take the engine out , clean it and put it back ?,this is really a must or just recommendation from Ferrari, also if you have a second hand one ?
im buying a 812 superfast, but I need to know a bit before what I'm getting myself into. :)
They do not recommend that on these cars
I am about to see a silver 430 that I just won the bid for on BAT but did not make the reserve. Carbon ceramic breaks convertible 18000 mile 2007. Looks like a good example, the Ferrari shop gave the thumbs up but not inspected there yet. Local boutique car shop has it. They want 106,000 min. So confused on prices. Looks like prices are still slowly creeping down... what do u all think? Wait till next spring or stick to 91,500 + 5000 BAT commission after local Ferrari check or somewhere higher = assume its a nice example.
That's honestly not bad! Thank God it wasn't a more complex drivetrain. I agree , totally worth it. I do have a question though, how did you insurance go up with time? One would think it would go down with a clean driving record
I think insurance in general just went.
@@normalguysupercar ahh ok.. makes sense everything went up in recent times haha. Congrats on the new 458 stunning car. I recently rented a California (i know it's nowhere near a rear engine mounted Ferrari) but I was in love! There is just something about these Italian race breed machines
cars like that are a hobby ... never tabulate the cost for hobbies, never!!! Enjoyment in life is priceless.
Well I still enjoyed it knowing the costs.
My budget is around 160k and I’m having a hard time to choose between these three cars . Used Ferrari California T, brand new Audi R8 or, 911. Any suggestions? my dream car is to own a Ferrari. Currently I have a Porsche Cayenne and a new RAM Rebel .
The R8 will turn the most heads and will be reliable.
Helo can you tell me houw much is the oil change cost?~
The point is ferrari is such a great car to have.. like ducati, its iconic, head turning, the leather seats material are incredible, the smell, the sound changing from idle to mid and then high.... italian opera...
Yup! Exactly
I love the look and idea of the ferrari brand. there is No way I would ever own one. Just too much maintenance over the time of ownership. thank you for this honest review
Well, it really depends on the car. Some take very little maintenance.
Normal Guy Supercar I have not heard about any Ferrari that is cheap to own. Please don’t misunderstand I have loved this brand since I was 16 years old but now that I am older I just cannot justify putting that kind of money into any car that cost that much to maintain. Not judging or being critical to anyone’s choice, just my view.
@@robertlawson2608 no worries. That's what this channel is all about. Showing that it's not as crazy expensive as everything thinks.
Can you upload updated document with the costs as last time??
I'll see if I have time
Should you have included $$$ spent on gas? 🤔 Thx for sharing.
Interesting numbers , i kept books on all my cars, when i had a E220 W124 (23 year old, 330.ooo km, needing a lot of stuff done) vs. Honda CR-V 2005 model (which are pretty much bullet proof, they barely need maintenance), but after adding all the costs i found that the Mercedes costs about the same as the Honda in ownership, one would depreciate and the other would need maintenance but very close costs when you factor them in.
Your F430 seems to have been reasonable, given what it is. That exhaust managed to be a very large expense in the total cost.
Forgot to mention the cost, it´s 3000-4000$ US per year (excluding fuel), per each car. At the time i was renting out the Honda for tourists so they did a lot more miles than normally, so they cost slightly less these days to run, my lovely E-class got crashed, but i´ll have another one in the future.
Yeah the big thing with Ferrari's is buying used and getting ones that have already taken the biggest depreciation hits. Then it really works out fairly well.
No sales tax?
In many states every time cars change hands sales tax is charged. A few years ago in GA they started collecting 6% everytime a car is newly registered. (Except for immediate family)
Interesting observation on your call Sonia Ferrari but you did not mention the gas had to put into the car how much that cost you never mentioned that
F430 one of my favorites Supercar 😎
It's a pretty amazing car
@Michael S. favourites there are much better supercars out there.
Thanks!
I had a 430, paid 175 and sold for 95 to dealer after 7 years. Did not really like the car. Put only about 20 K miles in total. Think it cost me about $10/mile. I would stay away from the 430. Reliability improved with the 458.
I guess my 16.5k initial repair expense wasn't even remotely bad lol as I didn't even DIY any of it. Thanks for that excel sheet you have Dan...it was useful.
Glad to be of service. :)
@@normalguysupercar now I'm working on fixing cosmetic issues paint/dash and then exhaust...i'll see if I catch up to your costs haha hopefully I won't!
Lol it's not hard to get there unfortunately.
430 already came with BBK front and back and full KW coil overs
Yup
I am a manual gated guy and those are at a premium for the 360 and I am seeing $30,000 to $40,000 extra for the 430 due to the last years with the gated. I will be selling an extra condo in a few months and then I will have the extra money for either a Ferrari or a Porsche and I am leaning towards the Ferrari. I was going to get a new SUV but I rebuilt my engine and transmission on my 22 year old Toyota 4Runner and I will keep that as my daily driver and I will buy my dream car. The know 360 has the cam issues with the early cars but most should had been fixed by now and of course the belt service but at least the engine does not have to be taken out and the 430 has the exhaust issues I was reading about. I was first looking at the 308’s or the 328’s but after more research the 360’s and the 340’s caught my eye. Thanks for all the good info.
You're welcome!
Normal Guy Supercar love your new car too. I also know I will keep an account for maintenance and insurance for each year. I work on my 1967 Triumph TR4A and like you I will learn do my own maintenance with oil changes and filters with the Ferrari motor. I know there are those that say when buying they only want to see records that a authorized mechanic do the work. I don’t care I like working on my car but with this car I will not be doing any engine breakdown or repairing.
How come your insurance is so cheap?
P.S. i was watching your videos and see so many familiar places. I was coming to Austin, Westlake for almost 2 years to do a project there. Love the place
No idea but I have a perfect driving record so that may help
My mondial 3.2 probably doesn't depreciate anymore, can work on it myself and innsurance is 4.9 euros per year (yes under five euros)... 👍
Niiiiiiiice
What’s better the 458 or 430 ? I heard there’s pros and cons to each one
I actually did a video on this... ruclips.net/video/WWmKx1zGVAA/видео.html
Surprised you didn’t get burnt on resale by not having dealer / specialist stamps in the service history. Thanks for the video, I plan to buy one so it helped as wasn’t sure how much of a money pit it would be vs. my 911s!
I don't think that matters as much on the cars that don't need engine outs
Normal Guy Supercar I think it might be a UK thing - if the car doesn’t go back to the dealer people think it hasn’t been maintained properly! I’d much have a car that has been looked after by an enthusiast like yourself than something where some random person in a dealership stamps a book to say the work has been done
Well done for driving & using your Ferrari.
Too many owners just don’t drive their Ferrari’s enough & that’s when all the problems occur resulting in a very expensive maintenance bill. It is a thoroughbred machine with a highly strung engineered engine & driveline. Precisely not the car to let sit in a garage for any length of time & drive short distances.
Besides, it is pointless paying all that money if you’re not driving & enjoying such an exotic piece of machinery.
Thank you
What is your current estimate for the 458 cost per mile? I'm guessing double? ~$3/mi?
Na it's way less
At least you enjoyed it my 2016 Z06 was bought new i have about 18000 miles on it I didn't know you could get a used Ferrari for that price I'm sure it's more enjoyable than a corvette
Vettes are still fun as hell
Hye, I’ve got a question for you. Did you think it is worth it to get a f430 as a first car in 2024? If so then give us your reasoning. Thnx!
As a first car or first supercar/Ferrari? First car, absolutely not. First supercar, absolutely.
I'd rent a supercar for the weekend honestly. Its not a cheap route either believe me, but I couldnt keep up with the maintenance responsibility of one of these if I purchased one
Thanks for the info good to know, but how much did you make in RUclips videos from the car? I would deduct that from the overall cost. Could be close to a wash in the end.. just sayin.
At that time, not much.
Make a video on best places and cheapest super car insurance agents! And who will insure them?
Well, I only know who I use, USAA.
Go through a Insurance broker and you will get the cheapest price. On my Aston Martin , Grundy wanted $4400 a year , another wanted $3600 a year and then I talked to my broker and got it for around $100 a month and then when I store it for winter, it goes down to $65 a month. Most places like Progressive , All State, etc will not insure supercars
Thanks for the cost breakdown! Very helpful. At double the cost if you hadn't done your own maintenance, that's nuts, $72k for 3 years, wasn't that much fun. You should do a video on the effect of Ferrari ownership on marriage, get your wife's point of view and input. I remember the early video you did with your wife. Forget the cost of ownership, what's the cost on the relationship?! That's the biggest hurdle for most considering buying a super car, how do you get your spouse's support? If you plan on selling your Ferrari, in my opinion, it's better to keep the professional maintenance for documentation and not do it yourself. That's a big red flag for me if someone is doing their own maintenance. Part of what you're selling is the documentation. If you buy a Ferrari and intend to own it forever, then by all means do all maintenance that you can yourself.
That's a great video idea
I have a F430 red spider for 8 years . Only changed the oil once a year. That was the only cost. I did approximately 700 km per year.
Nice
How much did you buy the 458 for and what year was it?
Keep up the content!
$157k 2010
@@normalguysupercar Thinking about getting one. High mile scares me though as I know others have used the shit out of it lol but I will be driving the hell out of it, how much miles did it have when you bought yours? Im sure while you were doing your research on getting the 458, you heard about avoiding the 2010-2011 models, what made you confident in buying it? Thoughts about extended warranty and if you did buy it how much does it cost?
Thanks so much

There is another version, that you dont change spark, exhaust, only oil you ll prob get by 20,000miles of ownership in which you save even more.. but the risk is if things break but those items are not fatal to the car or engine.
I would do the trans oil without the filter amd leave the problems to the next owner, 20,000miles cheaper get by still.possible but you ll loose tiny performace joy which is hard to pick up...
I suppose so but it's a significant risk
Is the insurance $1,800 a year or $1,800 a month?
How much was gas per mile?
sounds pretty good price for owning such a headturner. And maybe luck you didn´t change the brakes.
Na the brakes were fine. The new owner is still on the same pads
Hoo boy! I figure that when I purchase one of these someday that I will have to factor in time! I'm lucky to be a Master at my trade and be able to wrench on whatever it needs, but time is money to some folks also (like my wife...)
Yup, that is something to consider for sure
did you ever changed the Clutch ? a guy says it must be changed every 15k miles
Only if you dont know how to drive F1 gearbox and often lunching a car. In my F599 I have still 1st clutch with 76kkm.
If you weren’t able to do the work yourself then how much would the cost be? Not affordable then for a regular guy.
Do you think that if a certified dealership did all the maintenance and repairs that you would have gotta more for the car? I know you talked about how much you saved by doing it your self just wondering.
A little more sure, but more than how much I saved doing the work myself? Definitely not.
thank you for response ,
Any time
Appreciate you honesty in the cost. It's cool to show that it's not out of a normal guy's league to own an exotic. I have two kids right now, so I'm sidelined for another 6-7 years with colleges, oh well that was my path.
Yeah college is getting crazy expensive. Could easily afford a Ferrari instead. Lol
I have two kids as well and drive a Lotus (toyota engine). It has barely cost me anything to own because of reliability and still have an "affordable" exotic! I also have two other normal cars for the daily shop/commute.
The key here (I think) is your cost of borrowing its has to be 1% or 0.90% on your 75K
Great video! For the amount you drove, those costs are not bad at all! The 550 was getting crazy expensive and I wasn’t even driving it that much! You are right about the 430 market, the time is now!
Yuuup! 430s are too cheap. That's a lot of car for the money.
Sounds like a great value
Question do you get angry when you see how much profit you would have made, if you held on to it for an extra year or 2?
No.
Good job
Thanks
Will they all not start to go down in price? Some countrys wants to have only electric cars on the road in like 10 years so wont these cars be worthless?
I highly doubt that will happen
Actually to be expected for a 100k car not even including the enjoyment of ownership. A cost of ownership of your rental fleet (Minus income of course) would be interesting as well.
The rental cars are going to be interesting for sure. The catch is I can't really do a cost of ownership until I sell them.
@@normalguysupercar Sure, but you can have a good estimate of their current value. Other than the Corvette, ill bet the cost of ownership/value of the 430 is better than the F-Type and Maserati by miles lol.

Fuel costs? Why not mention that as a figure as cost per mile and per year like the other costs? Unless it was included in with one of those other figures.
I didn't record fuel costs
Patrick94GSR probably close to $6,500...mileage would be around 12 to 13 mpg conservatively with premium gas around $4 per gallon (depending on locations). So about $2100 per year, my Camry costs about $1,800 so not nearly as bad as I would’ve thought.
