It's hard for a gun person to watch this. The ignorance (though no fault of their own) is astounding.
It's beyond cringe. Omg. These people don't like guns but watch guns in the movies and play violent games with guns. For once someone set the professor straight. He is spreading stereotypes about the 2A friendly gun owners.

@@rootsevenflat It really would have been good for someone more knowledgeable to explain things to the professor before he holds a class on guns in America. The way he refers to AR-15s indicates he does not understand guns (even thouh he started shooting them at age four).
It would have been really good to touch on the Second Amendment as well.

They really needed someone who was more knowledgeable about guns and gun ownership, especially about the historical reasons behind gun ownership.
Props to this guy for being brave enough to get up there and try to make a stand. But if you own firearms just because "they're cool and fun" you don't fully understand the responsibilities you have taken on

@TeranRealtor exactly! The core reason for the 2A is to keep a tyrannical government at bay. This isn't discussed enough, it's always about 'self defense' or 'hunting'. The reason why I own and carry is to make 100% sure that the government knows that the People will go only so far before pushing back. And before I get blasted with 'insurrection is illegal', you should remember that this county was founded by insurrection. The right to do this is enshrined in the founding documents.

To be fair, this is a college class so anyone in there is only going to own, or not own, firearms due to their parents. I grew up in a 'no guns' state it wasn't until I was at least 25 that I started understanding how brainwashed and bad it was growing up there and how free and safe the rest of the country could be just by taking responsibility for myself in both safety and other ways.
Im from northern Wisconsin and this conversation is so bizarre to me. Guns have nothing to do with hurting or killing people. If I purposely shoot someone, that's an issue with my own morality or lack there of.

I'm from Texas. Everyone has guns, and it's not a big deal at all. It's a hobby and almost everyone is responsible. If you look at crime stats, it is very rare that gun hobbyists are involved.

You can't just walk in to a gun store, show your license and walk out with a gun. You have to fill out a Form 4473 and have a background check run.
Which is unconstitutional therefore illegal, background checks are unconstitutional in violation of article 4 section 2 paragraph 1, second amendment,9th amendment,14th amendment section 1.
It’s too easy for mentally ill people to acquire guns in America, the multiple mass shootings every year for 50 years proves that.
That’s unacceptable to every modern civilised country in the world except one.

This alleged educator could have made better use of these students time by running through the thousands of photographs of everyday people kneeling in front of ditches with firearms pointed at the backs of their heads. Our second amendment is what separates us from every place this has ever happened at.
Exactly! communist China and Russia have/had many of the same 'Rights' we have. But the governments there had no problem infringing on those Rights because the people had been disarmed.

the second amendment would not work on any other place. Fortunately a rule like that is not in other countries and other countries with gun rights and owners are not concerned with their government infringing on their gun rights. This mindset should never and unlikely cross into other places, better to fester in the states and deal with the repercussions of it

Having all of your guns in a safe isn't going to help you during a home invasion.
With effective gun control the person invading your house doesn't have a gun either. You just need a bigger bar than him/her.

Further, most gun deaths are suicides. Because we don't have assisted suicides and adequate mental health programs here.
This is an interesting session however this would also be a great place to educate people on firearms. The use of semiautomatic was misinterpreted at least 6 times. I think on topics like this it would be better to explain the definition of some of these words so that all the students would have a deeper understanding of the topic. At the very least it would be great to have them all starting off at the same place. But this was a very balanced approach and I hope that it brings more understanding in our already divided world.

And fill out the forms correctly, upon which making a mistake or lying is a felony.
In Texas if you have a License To Carry, you walk in, fill out the federal form 4473, pay for the gun and walk out with it.
@@tracymartin4517 you left out the part where the store contacts the FBI, verifies the information you provided, & conducts the background check. Until the FBI gives permission to the store, you're not leaving there with a firearm. There is no place in this country where a licensed retailer isn't doing a background check.
The perception that its a free for all in Texas and other states that dont have very restrictive firearms laws is hilarious. We have to go through background checks just like anywhere else. Pass the background check and you get to purchase the firearm.

In the 90's, when Texas passed their Concealed Carry law, I heard the media screaming about how Texas would become a killing field. The first guy that defended himself was crucified and called a kill, even after the truth came out that he was being beaten by a bigger, stronger, and younger man in a road rage incident. These activists were looking to push a narrative before all the facts came in.
Pretty sure private sales do not need a background check in Texas, correct me if I am wrong.
@@jiminauburn5073 You are correct, private sales do not require a background check. Only if you are buying from a licensed FFL dealer.
@@jiminauburn5073 That's a good point and a lot of states are like that. I would point out that 99% of legal gun owners are law abiding citizens that would never sell a gun to a known criminal, felon, or sketchy person. In my area, most sales of semi-auto rifles and hand guns are made at a FFL, hunting style rifles like "bolt action" and lever guns, and 50-100 y/o rifles are typically done privately (not at a FFL).
Honestly I think burglaries are how criminals get guns and then sell them to other criminals.
here's why you need an AR15:
1. self defense against multiple armed intruders
2. citizens defending themselves against criminal organizations like drug cartels invading towns as they are doing in california
3. defend against a tyrannical government(ie: irish potato famine deaths caused by british, japanese occupation of korea, nazi fascism)
4. defend against violent alien invasion
I hardly think an AR15 or any guns weapons would be effective against an alien invasion. Drug cartels aren't " invading towns" and taking over towns in California like they are in Mexico. It's more like the homeless people taking over California. I live in California. Defending against a tyrannical government nowadays with a gun would be useless as the government can just launch a drone strike. The only real concern is the first reason. But, that's assuming that you can have a loaded weapon ready in a few seconds notice, and if you're carrying it around it becomes kind of a hassle when you're just doing routine things around the house such as eating, using the bathroom, cooking, etc...

@@solar8600 it's a personal decision whether to use arms against tyrannical governments. the point i'm trying to make is that citizens should be allowed to exercise the right to bear arms if they choose to. And not every situation can be handled no matter how well armed you are. The important thing is that government doesn't take away the right of people to defend themselves

@@dmmchn Ah no need to infer positions onto me that you made up so I fit in your little schema. I just thought it was interesting that the original comment did not even mention the tyrannical methods of the US government when speaking of US problems and instead looked at it from a global scale. As you probably know many Americans do not really think about the extent to which their own country has a history of tyranny (which is natural, every nation's people do this). So you may need a few more years in psychic school before you can read people's minds from behind a screen. A gotcha question would be: Do you really think a semi-auto AR15 would stop the US government? Like what are you gonna do? Shoot government agents? Fight the US military? Become terrorists?

Gun owner: "Do you cook? Do you have knives in all your homes? How do you keep from killing each other?"
He quite rightly asked what happens when tensions boil and there is no self control. The response he got was "that doesn't happen."
The real problem isn't the gun. It's the person.

Are you worried that your friends are going to stab you or run you over with their car if you argue with them? Or is that simply not a reasonable concern?

I really like these videos! I love guns. But this was not a good discussion on guns.

To be fair to him, as a teenager, he might actually have killed his parents, the night they told him "No, you can't stay out late with your friends just because it's Friday".

I grew up on Long Island as well. Everyone I knew had firearms in their home. Nobody I knew in my community got shot......... and nobody invaded anyone's home either. Imagine that.
I lived in London England for 30 years, no guns & no home invasions either, which is preferable your experience or mine ?

All of this gun talk is doing circles around the whole point of the 2nd amendment. 2nd amendment was never intended for hunting or fun, it’s just not in there. It’s intended for self defense, specifically that of the govt should it become tyrannical. So for the love of god can you bring up the pertinent points? Like what happens historically when govts disarm their populations. Or how there are 500k-3m uses of a gun in self defense situations every year vs 42,000 deaths….and that’s ALL deaths, suicides included. Doctors kill more ppl through malpractice every year

"Do you have a semi-automatic?" Are you joking? Those are the norm. Short of barrel loaders like muskets, and single shot bolt-actions, basically all guns people own are semi-auto I'd assume. Seeing as most full-auto guns are either illegal for private ownership or expensive.

And I decided to actually try to look up the % and according to some sources like say an article from ammunitiondepot, the % of guns in USA that are semi-auto is around 20%. Maybe more, maybe less.
So not "basically all", I was wrong about that.
Still extremely common though.
And in danger of repeating this past mistake, I'm thinking that semi-auto is likely the most common choice for open or conceal carry in day to day life.

If gun control is such a problem in America, than I'm confused.
California has the most restrictive gun ownership laws in the nation...but in LA, San Fran and San Diego, if you commit a crime with a gun that you don't legally own, the "possession/use of an illegal firearm in a crime" charge is typically dismissed by the district attorney's office.

Yes and any law abiding citizen that accidentally breaks the law will be charged, found guilty, fined and serve time.

In the state of Tennessee you Can open carry be out of the store within 30 minutes of purchasing it with it in your hand. And that's the way it should be

The myth that citizens owning guns will ever impact a tyrannical American government is a comfortable excuse for not being brave enough to change for the better.
Props to the student for not being ashamed of owning guns and giving straight answers. I watched some of the other videos from this professor which I thought were quite good, but this one made me question how genuine professor “dude” is. Says he grew up around guns but clearly doesn’t understand much about them outside of a sociological analysis. Also seems like his questions were loaded (no pun intended). But I’ll give him the benefit of a doubt because I’m not sure what point he was trying to make in his lecture.
He wasn’t trying to make any point , he was trying to open a conversation with his students.
Plenty of people grow up around things without ever developing any understanding of them. All the more so sometimes, as they feel like they already have all the understanding they need since they feel familiar with them.

The professor here is trying to get his students to think for themselves. He is kind of behind the 8 ball because most youth today didn't get the self thought process taught to them .
I want to take this class just so I can debate this topic.
I too would have liked to have been there. I didn't consider this conversation a "debate" though. It was more of a Q & A session which I found refreshing. It's all about information and stigmas.
@@TheOnlySgtRock It was refreshing. What we usually see is a heated debate that goes nowhere. The professor made an excellent point that almost everyone, if given the chance, would like to try shooting and would probably like it and think it was cool.
This Prof is one of the best I've seen and better than most I experienced when I was a college student.
He also had guns when he was 5, but can't tell you what the difference is between a .223 and 5.56
If you think he's a great professor you haven't had many good professors

The answer to the questions is self-control, respect for human life, morals, and being a reasonable human. It would be as if someone asked how you keep from driving a car over a person crossing against the crosswalk.

Distinctly American/English Culture that goes into real Liberalism, Individualism and the Enlightenment. Which oddly does not include inner cities, although that’s where a majority of Gun Statistics come from.
When factoring guns into how they will be used you must take into account who’s using them & that must include criminals & the mentally ill.
You cannot legislate what those people will do , that’s why the USA has mass shootings & will continue to do so & everywhere else doesn’t.
When you have guns you must legislate for them being used by people who don’t have self control, like the mentally challenged or criminals who wish to use them in a malevolent way.
It’s pointless catering to the reasoned person, they don’t need to be told not to misuse their gun, car, etc.
So the answer isn’t self control, the answer is keeping guns away from dangerous people.

This discussion could've really benefitted from someone with knowledge on the matter, preferably from a more free state to give that perspective. The perspective of someone with a CCW would be value add, though obviously hard to find amongst students. The gun owner student gave an interesting perspective for someone from NY though.
The equivalent question of ridiculousness: Jay Leno owns 185 cars and 160 motorcycles. So how does he keep from running people over?
As a student, learn the history as to why the founding fathers created the 2nd Amendment (Why was the Bill of Rights created? Answer: It is considered INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHTS!)
Or even better why did coloniser's land on Native indigenous peoples land's when we only had stick's lol

I have watched several of your videos now. The thing that stands out for me is the kindness and decency which you demonstrate to all students and view points. I teach and I rarely see this kind of respectful approach to conflicting ideas. You give me hope that the university system might not be completely lost.

Also, .223/5.56NATO is used in AR15. Home boi is trying hard to avoid saying AR15 🤣
There are other guns that shoot the .223, single shots, bolt actions and semi autos. The mini 14 wasn't banned during the clinton weapon ban because it had a wooden stock and looked like a hunting rifle even though it still was a semi auto with a 30 round magazine.
He probably has a mini-14 or something like that because I doubt he’d be afraid of saying he has one if he does. He doesn’t necessarily sound like he has the most knowledge of firearms and he more of just grew up around them and knows some of the basics

The proper rejoinder to the question, "how do you not just shoot your friends when you get in a fight?" is "how do you not just stab your friends when you get in a fight?" The guns are no different in that scenario than any other deadly object.

In Kentucky it took an 8 hour written exam and shooting a target at seven yards. I received my concealed license in 07. But now we've become a constitutional carry state, now I don't need one.
Same in Ohio and that's the way it should be. We don't have to get a license to practice free speech in public.

I enjoy this professor. I've watched a lot of his videos. In 99% of cases, he has researched his topic so that the presentation can be given/presented objectively. However, to blatantly say "I shot guns as young as 4-5, ".. .then later say "I don't know what I am talking about"... and referring to them as "semi-automatic"....which describes nearly all gun styles and the majority of guns out there being used and sold today (bolt action single fire guns would be in the minority) is a bit frustrating to me.
Do you have large kitchen knives at home? Meat Cleaver? 12" Butcher knife? When you argue with friends do you stab each other? Everyone would say thats a silly question but its the same. Whats the reason most don't pick up large knives sitting on the kitchen counter is the same reason the vast majority of gun owners don't. Its not even a thought or impulse.
I'd love to go there and talk to these folks. I left PA because of how it's going, but I'll come back for a chat.

So the question was “How as a gun owner do you keep from shooting someone you’re in an argument with?”. Let me throw it back at you. Man, when we were young on the farm, all of our guns were kept in the front clothes closet with the ammo on the top shelf. It was never an issue. Nowadays, people are locking them up more.
I think it more depends on where you live. I would always have at least one gun readily accessible but if I lived in NY I would probably lock the rest up.
I’m glad this student went up there to give some insight but unfortunately he isn’t very knowledgeable. I’m not trying to get down on him but his state is pretty restrictive and in turn keeps him from having more experiences.

I give him credit for trying and going forward but he did not represent gun owners very well and even actively tried to distance himself at times.

When I was a kid it was common during hunting seasons to see rifles, shotguns or bows in the back windows of trucks. Also 2-3 kids vehicles in the school parking lot. No one ever shot anyone or stole one….what changed in our DNA that makes people want to do that now?? Guys had a fistfight…done and shook hands…next day probably still didn’t like each other but never wanted to kill each other…??? The parenting has lost touch with the kids maybe…teachers and principals have lost their minds. Our principal knew 75% of the kids first or last names in my school….pretty good for about 800 kids. Engaged with them randomly going down the halls…how many do that now. Guns are not the problem…

Ask them how many governments their home country had in the last 245 years. China will say 4. Germany will say 4. Russia will say 3. Then ask how many of THEIR people did their governments kill in that time. China will say 45,000,000. Germany will say 10,000,000. Russia will say 20,000,000. Then ask the American how many governments the USA has had in that time. Answer: 1. How many Americans did the government kill: counting the so-called "Indian wars," answer: 50,000. And the reason is the 2nd Amendment. Communists stole China and Germany because their people didn't have personal firearms to stop them. Germany: fascists. Sir: let the facts speak for themselves.

I think most of us would love to be in this room and have an honest conversation without being screamed at by anti-2A lunatics. That's something the country is severely lacking. People are having conversations over the Internet rather than in person.

What keeps us from shooting our friends when we are angry? The same thing that keeps us from knifing them, or driving over them, or clubbing them with a baseball bat, or just choking them out.

An AR-15, is just a modern rifle. A rifle is a rifle....lever action, bolt-action, semi, each with their own advantages and purposes, just like cars. An AR-15 is nothing any more special, other than it is much more modular and customizable to your given purpose. It s just easier to work with in some instances. It isn't any more lethal, dangerous, or problematic than any other rifle.
Im from Arkansas and im amazed at how little knowledge these ppl have about guns!! 💩 The government won't have to take back our guns if ppl don't know or care anything about it! But trust me in the south we take it seriously and I don't hunt because I personally don't like killing anything...i realize its kinda hypocritical but I don't enjoy that part! However gun safety, the gun range, knowledge of your gun, practice with your guns are important! Also storage is very important and everyone I know puts them in a strong/huge gun safe! I mean mine weighs 800 lbs! So nobody that shouldn't have access to guns will not be getting mine!

The professor tried to pretend he wasn't framing the issue by saying "I grew up with guns." but then framed by saying "I'm not as crazy as you are."
I imagine it is hard when you are young and in the spotlight to articulate your position and overall, I think Robert, our gun owner did a good job. I do appreciate the discussion because it actually was a "normal" discussion of the subject of firearm ownership. That said, in response to the question about what's with all the guns, self-defense, recreation, and hunting. It is important to understand the historical context though. The 2nd Amendment is about giving the people arms for self-defense from either a criminal or particularly a tyrannical government. Beyond that, it's fun, like the one young lady on (stage) right said. In response to Parth's question - and keep in mind, I'm 51 and have owned guns since I was 18 - it's easy not to shoot my friends over a disagreement because I'm not a murderer. Guns don't make a person kill. A killer might use a gun, but the motive doesn't come from the firearm . All things said though, I appreciated the conversation and give credit to the professor.
I don't fault this kid he did his best. I wish I took this guys class I would have loved to do this with a group of uninformed gun people.

I just discovered this series and love it! Huge shout out to the students and faculty that put these together. I have a degree in social sciences and currently work in healthcare. I was raised without firearms or knowledge of such in a mostly liberal household. I got my first firearm, a semi auto pistol, a few years ago and immediately fell in love with shooting. I can’t tell you enough how important discussions like these are to me, personally. Gun culture is so much more dynamic and nuanced than the media portrays. Yes, we have issues in this country with violence in general, but the inaminate objects are only a small part of the issue. Human behavior will always be a complicated topic. There are great books/studies by Jennifer Carlson, David Yamane to name couple that don’t just jump on the bandwagon wagon of denouncing gun culture, but rather look into it through participant observation and find all sorts of complexities. I recommend looking into the Liberal Gun Club and their root cause mitigation policies as well. Regardless, thank you. It’s nice to see academia exploring the whole rather than the ignorant narrow that many critics attribute to education. Keep it up!
