I was friends with a number of my exes, still am with some. This is a different situation here, though, I think. He had entered a relationship with someone who he wasn't that into, and he was glad when she gave him a way out. She had truly committed to the relationship, only to feel him pull back and never really addressing it. So I assume that she put a lot of effort into trying to be better. As she sang, he made her feel like it was something that she had done. He left her at arm's length in limbo, until she gave up and decided to save herself by letting him go all the way, if he is already half out of the door all the time. He didn't even care enough for her to end it and release her from that agony. What he is feeling now is hurt pride, not missing her. Why should she continue to expose herself to that?

This song breaks my heart. I’m 73 years old and still keep in touch with “someone that I use to know” in 1976. Wish I could see him one more time. We live in different states. He’s married and I’m a widow. I still love him ❤

Gotye, pronounced "gow · tee · ay" is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, on occasion, performs solo, or in this case a duet. His full-time gig is with the group "The Basics".
My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation.
Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and she "wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know". She could read into the words he said that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.
Relationships are not like friendships. If two exes go out or hang out together even if they're single, that brings up past feelings. Before you know it you might start dating again or sleeping with each other forgetting why it didn't work out in the first place. Relationships and marriages (without children involved) are like business partnerships. Once they fail it's best to move on and never interact with the other person ever again
In this song it was necessary for the girl to cut ties. Listening to both of their sides of the story, he shows signs of being a narcissist and not really even being into her. Saying stuff like he was lonely in her company and that he was glad the relationship was over. He's not heartbroken like she is about the relationship ending. His ego is just hurt that she moved on and cut ties with him
Well, yeah.
Another possibility is that he's ret-conning the whole break-up conversation.
Then again...
"But when you said that we could not make sense, well you said that we could still be friends..."
If that's actually what she said to him, then the whole way the break-up eventually unfolded sounds bad.

Gotye is really a unique artist. Most of his music is built from samples of other songs. Most of them are kind of obscure samples and unexpected, but he is a genius at melding things together to make a cohesive sound. You should dive a little deeper into the catalog. It’s all really great.
This was a deep breakdown I've heard the song a bazillion times & even parts of the video. But I thought the duet was longer & never paid attention to the lyrics deeply until you're commentary questioning why are things the way they are🤔
The problem with the end is that you've been not only physically but metaphorically naked with that person. They are no longer in your life yet they have all this insight and you feel
that at any moment the cascade of criticism will commence.
To sever the relationship completely is to deny all that, to neutralize the intimacy because that's where the hurt resides. It's much easier to obliterate it than to acknowledge it.
Yet the other person feels diminished and that the whole relationship was a lie when he or she thought they'd made their partner's heart sing. To be confronted with indifference is devastating!

I agree that it should be normal to keep some form of loose contact with a former partner, as long as there wasn't anything terrible or hurtful that happened to cause the end of the relationship or after it ends. I'm still friends with my second partner; we don't talk regularly but he's still a good friend and someone I can talk with about certain things. We live in different states but my current partner has met him. A lot of people that I know were weirded out that my ex and I consciously chose to stay friends and keep in touch; though the relationsihp ended based on I was moving for a return to college and he didn't want to move nor try to make long-term long-distance work. He was one of my biggest supporters of going for my education and has since said that he regretted not trying to make it work or move with me. He's still a great person and good friend. It was a hard change to make but I'm glad we did.
You should check out the cover by Step Of The Earth of this song. It's amazing, especially the unique video. Man it takes me back to early days of RUclips. Around 11 years ago if I recall correctly.

It seems you are not paying attention to what she said. That he screwed her over, making everything to be her fault and even though he promised her a past relationship was over, he is still caught up about some other woman he used to know. He is rather selfish. It's all about him

Goyte is a fantastically talented but underrated artist and this song is not really representative of his work. That said, I find it fascinating what different meaning people take from the song. To me there is a sadness and a bewilderment about the male side of things, maybe trying to make out he doesn't care, even though everything the female has experienced may be valid. The ultimate message seems to be, relationships are complicated, as are humans! Gotye's lyrics are always worth listening to.

Yeah, for many, they move on, especially if the breakup was difficult or the relationship was more important for one of the partners. It just depends on the relationship, where the hurt lands and the personalities involved.
