Went into the mountains out in Montana last year. Ran across a mother grizzly and her cubs during a storm. The mother was 15 yards from me and stood up on her hind legs and all I had was a Henry .17hmr. Now I have a 45-70🙏
Hey guys. Im from Bariloche, Argentina. Recently i got followed by a cougar in one of my night hikes thru the woods. luckyly i had two lights ( headlamp and cellphone light) that saved me. Had to walk backwards a hole hour till i reached the highway. Looking foward to watch this one see what i can learn. Wild animals are no joke
Randy has not led a mundane life. Awesome stories and advice. Most people I've talked to about Grizzlys are unaware they will J hook hikers and hunters hiking up behind them and ambush them.
people think they make a lot of noise... These predators are remarkably silent. I was in a camp where a black bear was only feet away from about 25 guys gathered around a large fire...we only saw it because someone pulled their car up closer and his headlights revealed a massive black bear, trying to squeeze his head into a pot of baked beans. Scared the shit out of me... I have also been to Belize and had a private tour of their zoo, only they opened the park at about midnight for us. They had 3 juvenile/adult Jaguars, one of the most impressive animals that I have ever seen, they were very active. The guide told me that there were 3 cats but we all only saw 2. We were very close to the cage and had flashlights. Still no 3rd cat, when suddenly, only a few feet directly Infront, the 3rd cat yawned. He was jet black and had been a few feet away the whole time, and we had flashlights!
As a Chicagoan I can tell you that the Bears weakest point has always been the passing game, just blitz after they yell hike and force a bad pass that can be intercepted. All kidding aside, that was quite sobering to hear that a bear can essentially be a zombie for 5 minutes. This is the content that entertains, educates, and very possibly could save lives.
An absolutely amazing segment. I recently took my family hiking in Montana. We had bear spray and a .40 caliber Glock. I feel like a complete dumb shit.
Indeed great info. This past fall hunting season here in Arkansas I had both a bear and a lion encounter. To my relief neither encounter became physical. What it did was give me pause to know that when I'm in the Woods I'm not the top of the food chain.
A woodsman my family hunted with in western AR was stalked by a black panther years ago. He told the story when he got back and said "we're not going back for the deer or that panther." Of course, AR wildlife dept. will tell you there are no black panthers in AR. Bears are bad now also. Bad in OK as well as mountain lions.
@@toddk1377 I always carry a Glock in 10 m m whether I'm deer hunting turkey hunting or just taking a leisurely walk in the woods. As far as the buddy system goes I'm A Lone Ranger.
@@johnovanic9560 At least 10mm is a good round that packs a punch. As far as going alone, we can't always go with buddies, but I understand. I do it many times myself. I will carry my 357 revolver. We are starting to see a rise in the predator population up here in the NE and the DNR says we don't have wolf, mountain lions up here but yet people are catching them on their trail cameras. We have black bear but they are usually very skiddish of humans as they are hunted. Self awarenesses is key.
Because of my father I was urged to study Jim Bridger and Jeremiah Johnson. All early frontiersman who recorded brutal accounts of combat with grizzly, natives, wolverines, cougars and other threats have similar tales which outlined the hard life they were living. Anyone who would try to develope their bushcraft to any level of competency should study the early pioneers like Rodgers, Boone, and Kit Carson.
All great. But the Natives were way ahead of them. Mountain men learned from the natives. At 14 you left on your spirit walk. A knife n a bow. A bit of jerky. Came back after your vision. Id say not all came back. But those that did, fought an animal for the right to come back.
I'm glad Randy discussed the difference between wilderness and urban survival as they have some major differences. As scary as bears can be, people still scare me more for obvious reasons. Thanks Randy for all the knowledge you are sharing, this very well may save someone's life. Stay safe 🇺🇲
Hi Karl and team. Interesting info indeed! Never knew that about bears. Thanks for getting Randy on again, always nice to hear from him! Have a good weekend everyone. South African Farmer
Loved the video! This is a topic near and dear to me as I live in bear country and have had experiences with both black and grizzly alike- luckily they all ended well! Great info you both provided!
This video was awesome, there are so many situations where this knowledge and application of can be beneficial. The loss of sight or breath will stop most attacks.
Incredible first hand accounts that all are just plain up frightening and I'd hate to be in any single one of them. Don't think I'd ever stand much of a chance but with this, I feel I'd stand a little longer. Something we don't hear enough about. We also just simply underestimate mothernatures wildlife in more ways than one. Loved every second.
I shot a 400lb black bear with a 303 lee infield at 15 ft as it attack our dog at our house, I shot it through the lung and heart it still ran 300ft with a 2ft swath of blood trail. I fully respect wild animals.
I looked for this channel, because of T- Rifle man's appearance on Carnik-Con's episode on Knob Creek, he shocased the STONER 63, hands down, the best weapon ever invented.
I always carry bear spray when in back country, Side arm, 12 gauge with alternating 00 Buck and slugs as well as my rifle. Idaho/Montana you've got all the big predators, brown and black bears, cougar, and wolves, they'll all hunt you. As stated, you may never get the opportunity to use it. I've chased BIG black bears down the street with harsh language and a flashlight (don't worry fellas, I was armed with bear appropriate ammunition in my EDC pistol). When I lived in the Pa mountains my yard was like a bear super highway, there's some video on my channel, but it's not great. The thumbnail of the video is a big 600+lb male that used to come through my yard all the time though. Here in Ky I have 2 kinds of poisonous snakes on my homestead, copperheads and water moccasins. They scare me way more.

Lots of black bears where I live. Always been taught to fight a black bear. Thankfully never had to. When to rounds were landing behind the bear, the bear was singing: Hit me with your best shot. Randy, you still listen to Pat B?
Great information! Where I live, you better not have a choice because you might be going to prison right or wrong. Not only should it be worth your life but also any other penalties, fines, court appearances, lawyers, or becoming Bubba's snuggle buddy. If you kill a black bear and you or someone else has no scratch on them, the law may not agree with your story.

@russellridge8623 lol no doubt, between the noise and the impact damage, everyone would scatter like roaches to the light 😄

Look at the chops on that groom! It takes me right back to 1975.
That bear that didn’t stand up went on to live a full life as The Bald-Headed Bear of Clare County.
