Blueberry barbecue sauce is a great condiment to make if you have excess blueberries or other juicy fruit. It's only slightly sweet and won't overpower foods. The mistake most fruit barbecue sauces make is that they assume molasses must be added for it to taste like barbecue sauce. Molasses is a really strong flavor and basically just covers up the flavor of the fruit, making it taste muddy.
This basic template can be used with just about any fruit you can imagine, and that's exactly how I was taught to use this sauce at Heartland Restaurant in St. Paul back in the day. Peaches, plums, cherries, serviceberries, we would make the sauce from them, can it, and sell it in our market located next to the restaurant, for $15 / pint. Here I use cultivated blueberries, but I've also made it with wild blueberries I harvest.
The wild blueberries appear to have more pectin and when I made it with them the sauce had to be warmed to loosen it. cultivated blueberries contain more water and may need to be reduced a little more after pureeing. Either way it tastes great and you should make it when you have some extra.
Recently I made this for Easter dinner and my family was putting it on pork roast and prime rib, but it's good with basically any meat besides fish. Full recipe's linked at the top of the video description.

I'm not a fan of most BBQ sauces because of the overpowering molasses flavour. This looks like a great substitute, thanks for the suggestion.👍

Test drive it on my family yesterday and they were pouring it from the jar. Skipping the molasses is key.

Never thought of using blueberries for anything savory or spicy. Here in Sweden the forests are covered in wild blueberries, free to pick for anyone. Thanks for the tip!

You bet. It’s really good. Huckleberries and bilberries too.
