The only thing Duncan was missing was the Chicago, NY, LA logo. He had one of the best careers that many missed. And the best part was Tim Duncan didn't care. He left his accomplishments on the court instead of the headlines.
Tim didn't chase rings by moving around and making trade demands. His play drew others to him.

@@polocash11 the Spurs didn't really trade for key components. Their best players came through the draft. Aldridge and Gasol came later and were pretty much on their last legs lol. Can you imagine Prime Gasol and Prime Duncan on the same team? wouldn't have been fair.
Duncan reminds of the blue collar dude that wasn't into the flash, glitz & glamour. He just took his brown bag with his lunch in it to work & got the job done.

Kevin Garnett actually said that TD is only player he gave up on. He could never get under his skin and Duncan made him more frustrated that any player his entire career. The crazy thing is Duncan did this without saying more than "nice try" or "maybe next time"!!!
P.S. Duncan also took pay cuts everytime the team needed...and that is a true leader and winner!!!
I recall when he did a finale video where he reveals his goat pick and talks about the making the case series as a whole, he mentioned he didn't put Kobe in the list because he couldn't find or think of a legitimate argument that put Kobe out of Michael Jordan's shadow. Kobe is 'Jordan lite' in a sense, and dispelling that notion is a daunting task considering they're playstyles are identical, play the same position, and use the same moves. Kobe was a slightly better 3pt shooter, but that's really about it.
It's true. I personally think there is a case to be made from the sense of difficulty, that Kobe succeeded in a more difficult era as compared to jordan. That he won 3 of the hardest rings in nba history in a three peat, and then proceeded to win a back to back, with equally difficult rings, not having another top 75 player on the team. He played in the most defensive era, playing the most superstars and winning against the most 50 win teams. And within that, he put up such high volume numbers when scoring was at an all time low, getting a 35 point season where he scored 81 points in one game. I think there's an argument that he's slightly more skilled in terms of footwork and post moves, and he pushed through more injuries and a more physically limiting body.
That being said, that is just a case I cab think of, but Jordan's, and that of other players, are still greater than Kobe's. Kobe really was the second iteration of MJ, so it's hard to escape a chronic second place.
jordan's teams were far more stacked than kobe's. one could argue during his time with shaq it was comparable...but for his second two rings, not close. that's where kobe gets more props from me.
As a long-time Nuggets fan, I was always frustrated about Duncan. We couldn't score on him, we couldn't guard him, he always got the big rebound, etc; so we could never get past the Spurs for playoff spots. But I couldn't hate the guy. He was just pure class, still is. Hope he gets a HC gig soon.

Timmy is just that guy you need in every team. Never mind the razzle dazzle. Never mind the flashy plays. Never mind the dunks. Let the guy do his work and eventually he will make the team and the association better while winning and getting them rings.
While I'm not a huge basketball fan, I spent 20 years rooting for the Spurs because of Duncan. This video explained why very well. What also occurred to me while watching it is that a comparison can be made between Duncan and Derek Jeter.

I don't mean to put words in Clayton's mouth, but I think the biggest reason Kobe is not included is because he was "the second coming of Michael Jordan," but just a hair below him. The others in the series were different kinds of players, so there was more room to make different arguments for them.

@@mike04574 Kobe Bryant is CERTAINLY a top 8 player... the thing is that he couldn't be no.1 because Jordan is objectively better than him in the same playstyle so he had no place in this documentary... however go watch a take by Gilbert Arenas on how he would argue for Kobe being the GOAT if he had to (didn't mean he has Kobe as the goat... but if he had to debate why he is what he would say)...
he said "Kobe was the second coming of Jordan and almost reached his greatness and only was below Jordan by a hair, right? But Jordan started with a huge advantage... he was the best athlete the NBA has ever seen with the biggest vertical in NBA history of 48 inches... Kobe's vertical was 38 inches and he wasn't even close to being the athlete Jordan was... so in reality we have two cars racing, one is a Bugatti (Jordan) and the other is a Honda (Kobe cause he was an average athlete)... so if the Honda loses the race but only by a hair, who drove better? The Honda was supposed to lose the race all along anyway, so isn't it a bigger accomplishment that he came so close than the Bugatti winning a race it was supposed to win anyway?"
When I heard it I thought that it was an absolutely BRILLIANT analogy and a brilliant way to make a case for Kobe as the GOAT...

If defense was as easy to see in stats and held in higher regard? This wouldn't be a conversation. In that world he beats Bron, Jordan, Kobe, anybody in the debate. The intangibles, the longevity (with the team that drafted him as a bonus), the consistency, the dedication, the awards, he had it all by the ton. I can genuinely say that he would be my #1 pick in any draft, in any league

I had no idea Tim Duncan was such a really wonderful human being. Damn! as for where he ranks in the greatest players of all time it sounds like he was a world-class defender a lot like Bill Russell. Cuz the dude said he was maybe the greatest defender of all time. The thing is he was a better scorer than Bill Russell. He could hit outside jump shots. In my mind I'm beginning to rank the top eight players one through eight and I thought I'd put Tim Duncan at the bottom but now I really don't know where to rank him.

The spurs were in SERIOUS contention basically every year. Even during the dreaded "Jeffersonian Era", The spurs were the #1 seed twice. If you consider that the spurs would have repeated in 2000 without a Duncan injury, and the Shaq Kobe Lakers would have traded away one of them, it is entirely possible that Duncan should have had more rings than Russell. And that's in the modern Era of basketball when there is actually more than one team.
TD is the greatest.
P.S.S. Bill Russell's favorite NBA player (after he retired) was Duncan...just watch interviews!
...also, MJ said Duncan is the player to watch out for in an interview during Duncan's rookie year. In contrast, when Duncan was asked about MJ, he said "I was never that impressed..."
First, let me say I really liked your video on Bill Russell, brought tears to my eyes at the very end. I'm over 50 years old and unfortunately, never seen Russell or Wilt in their primes (Bill not at all). However, I did see Kareem in his prime and all the other players in the "GOAT" conversation.
My Grandpa and my best friend's dad (the 2 people who I respected the most about knowledge of the NBA) told me a lot of stories about Bill and Wilt. They both said that Bill Russell was the "GOAT" until Larry Bird came into the NBA. Then they both said that MJ is the best individual player, but still was an argument between him and Larry. They also said Wilt was the best winner and leader still, and MJ best individual, but Larry had the most well rounded game when it came to SHOOTING, SCORING, REBOUNDING, PASSING, DEFENSE, LEADERSHIP, CLUTCH play, and making their teammates BETTER.
Not Kareem, Magic, Kobe, Wilt, Lebron, or Shaq was in the "GOAT" conversation. The only other player they mentioned was TIM DUNCAN!
Now their are a lot of media and younger people who push a lot of false narratives. I just started this video and the "Greg Popovich" argument is ridiculous. The fact is, since Duncan left the Spurs, even with Kawhi (one of my favorite players to watch), Tony Parker, Manu, L. Aldridge, and great role players, the Spurs NEVER won anything! When Pop arrived in 1996, the Spurs were my favorite team. I was a huge David Robinson and Dennis Rodman fan. Year after year, the Admiral broke my heart and disappeared in the post season. Literally sitting on the bench and being afraid to check back in and face Hakeem. Rodman went to the Bulls, David had a very bad back injury already, and then fractured his foot. He missed just about the entire 1996-97 season and the Spurs went 20-62. They got the #1 pick and drafted Tim Duncan. Duncan's rookie year, he led the Spurs in scoring, rebounding, blocks and led the Spurs to the BEST single season improvement in NBA history (breaking Larry Bird and Boston's record!). That year, Duncan finished 5th in MVP & 5th in DPOY voting, and made all-NBA & all-defensive 1st teams. Only rookie in NBA history to do this. The only player (since the NBA & ABA merged in 1976) to finish higher in MVP voting was Larry Bird at #4. MJ finished 6th and Lebron finished 8th.
Out of the 19 years that Duncan played, he finished in top 10 in MVP & DPOY (in the same year) voting 12x and top 14 (14)x. At the age of 39, Duncan finished #10 in MVP and #8 in DPOY voting. The next closest player to finish in top 10 (over the age of 35) is MJ, who did it at 35 years and 4 mos. The next closest is Lebron at 33 years old.
Of the top 26 players in Win Shares, only 2 players have played 13 full season or less. Bill Russell is #18 in 13 full seasons, Larry Bird is #26 in 12 full seasons (Tim Duncan is #7 in 18 full seasons).
Every year of Duncan's 19 year career the Spurs either won 50 games or would have if it was a full season. The Spurs NEVER missed the playoffs either. Only Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kawhi Leonard can say this.
Finally, Greg Popovich was asked after the Spurs made playoffs for their 20th straight season (always being a title contender), what was the "secret to his success"? Pop's answrer...
"TIM DUNCAN!'
Stever Kerr was asked on the TV show Open Court, how he was able to get 5 rings? Kerr's answer...
"Michael Jordan & Tim Duncan"
While Kerr played with and for Phil Jackson, Pippen, Rodman, Admiral, Tony Parker, and Manu, Steve Kerr didn't hesitate for 1 second and only mentioned those 2 players!
P.S. To show how underrated Larry Bird and Tim Duncan were on defense, the players who led the NBA in Defensive Win Shares the most are...
Bill Russell with a ridiculous 11x. #2 on the list is Tim Duncan who did it 5x. Tied for 3rd at 4x are Larry Bird, Hakeem, D. Howard, and Ben Wallace. Wallace won DPOY 4X, Howard 3x, and Hakeen 2x.
...on the NBA's STEALS & BLOCKS per game lists for a career, Larry is ahead of Lebron on both. Larry is #39 and Lebron #71 in steals per game for career, and Bird is #211 and Lebron #241 for blocks per game for career.
The game is measured in wins and losses and Timmy had a LOT of wins. He's top 3 all time for me.
To me Tim Duncan is a GOAT and he’s definitely a top 5 NBA player of all time because his accomplishments on the court on offense and defense him not winning DPOY is a robbery, making the playoffs constantly in his career is a miracle. Played for one team and coach show love, loyalty, and respect that’s greatness.
As a Spurs fan who grew up in this era, I can say Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant were the GOAT’s of this era.
Also side point, that Ray Allen 3 should not have ever happened due to the stupid, corrupt Joey Crawford (the ref who literally hated the spurs and had ejected Tim Duncan for laughing on the bench {the second and last ejection of Tim Duncan’s career}) not calling offensive loose ball fowl on Bosh going for the rebound and literally shoulder checking Manu to the floor.

My take on why Timmy is my goat, is in the 2013 Finals. If you replace Timmy with his 2003 version, he would absolutely obliterate the Heat even with prime Lebron there.
Kareem was 1st team all NBA in 1986 at age 39, making HIM the oldest 1st team selection ever.

and yes, in his prime, he was ABSOLUTELY dominant. thats the part that really gets lost because of how long he played and how good he was even at 38. people assume he was that good his whole career. No, go watch his games in 2001-2005. Best player in basketball during that time. period.
He has a video explaining why Kobe doesn’t have a video. The main points from it: Kobe’s game is extremely similar to mikes, and while great his style is an inferior version of mikes game. Also he says it would feel wrong to crowbar Kobe into the series following his death(the series started before Kobe died) and it would feel like profiteering. But yeah, main reason is his game is too close to michaels and the case can’t really be made that he surpassed Michael

While I personally wouldn't include Duncan in the actual GOAT argument (Kareem was better in both college and the NBA, so how can Duncan possibly be better than Kareem?) I think it's likely that he's the best player in NBA history who DOESN'T have a GOAT argument.

that Clippers series was not Duncan's last playoff appearance; 2016 was when they lost to OKC when newly acquired Aldridge shrunk and Duncan had like 25 points his final game. Aldridge was supposed to be in his prime and succeed Duncan, but old Duncan outshined Aldridge, and then retired.
...also in 99' the kobe shaq lakers weren't "newly assembled" that was their 3rd year together..just sayin

Kobe wasn't on the floor a whole lot his first two years and was definitely not the 2nd option at that time. He made the All Star team because he was extremely popular and had a massive amount of potential, and was already doing some moves that nobody had seen yet in an NBA game

Tim Duncan was amazing with his fundamentals, defense, and really clutch but not even close to The One of the NBA, MJ. There is a handful of Centers Kareem Shaq Wilt Bill that all have better cases imo as being better all time so this is really a kind of recency bias thing... P.S. ...I think Tim is just as good if not better overall than Kobe..

The only thing I don't like in this making the case series is that it doesn't include Shaq and Kobe. He put Wilt in but I feel like he's the one at least debatable putting in the Top ten. That's just my opinion though
Yea I feel that, I feel like Kobe had a shot to be part of the series but I’m not mad at it and I would say Shaq too but after his run in Miami, his career started going downhill to the point he was no longer a contender, but Larry, Wilt, Russell, Jordan, etc were still contenders or in contending shape at the end of their careers
@@yojustmatt I only put in Shaq because he was probably was the most imposing and a match up nightmare. His dominance was cut short I think by being lax on his training and like Wilt there was no other athlete in his time to really challenge him physically besides Hakeem's skill.

But more importantly the fact that he’s Michael Jordan 2.0 makes it hard to argue he’s the best ever because, well there’s the actual MJ. Like how do you argue the closest thing to MJ is better than MJ?

Sorry Tim Duncan is leaps and bounds better than lebron James yes lebron James played longer and is going to probably play longer just because his ego doesn't mean hes any good if he continues to keep playing, Tim Duncan is one of the only players that play 19 seasons and never have a losing record and for your information even after he retired the spurs had 3 more winning seasons bringing the total to 22 straight winning seasons of 50 or more games lebron never came close or did anything like that that just shows how good Tim Duncan is😎💪
