    In this video, I will go over the proper temperature for various styles of wine and why you would drink them at those temperatures. Additionally we will review compressor style wine fridges and thermoelectric peltier style wine fridges and why you might choose one style over the other. If you have any questions, please post in the comments below!
    The fridges used in this video are a Newair AW-211ED Thermoelectric Model that holds 21 bottles and a Newair AWR-290DB-B Compressor model that holds 29 bottles. Each fridge is intended for a slightly different application, and you will learn why in this video. learn more at my website, smartwinemaking.com

    Actually the bottom grid is to evacuate the heat produced by the fridge, which allows you to put it against the wall or built it built it into your cupboards. The other kind has to be located where air can circulate all around.

      Thank you! I hear ya on the price difference. I think if you were building a house or a kitchen would be when that would make the most sense since they are sized to fit right in your cabinets and just overall a little more beefy and permanent seeming

    This has been very helpful. I too make wine and store many bottles in a cool basement. I think I'll stay with that approach and manipulate the temperature ahead of the time a bottle is to be opened.

    I had a cheaper thermo electric wine fridge for several years. Placement made a big difference to that thing. First position was on a kitchen counter, about 8 inches from a south facing exterior wall. It would not cool down! When I finally got a clue, it moved to a south facing interior wall in the living room. It worked fine in that location. I never realized the sun could heat the inside surface of exterior walls (6" fiberglass insulation) but it definitely does.

    Three thing ruin the storage of wine. Vibration, light and wide temperature swings. Humidity is also a very important part of the equation. Humidity will wrap a wine bottle and allow better heat transfer for a more steady maintained set temperature. And that is one reason why wood shelves are much better than metal shelves. Any good wine system will have a remote refrigeration system to eliminate compressor vibrations. A self contained unit with an attached compressor will create vibrations which can cause the wine to activate. The same is true for light and that is why wine cellars located under the ground is important where light can not reach the wine. This also applies to wide temperature swings which will also activate the wine. Most mechanical thermostats in small self contained units have a built in mechanical 4 degree differential which can cause the temperature to swing widely above and below the mechanical set points.

    What can you tell me about the humidity? Is it controlled somehow? Are these fridges good enough to store my wine for long time if I do not have a proper cellar in my basement?

    Hi there! got a question
    In regards to reds and decantering, the decanter process brings the red to room temperature whilst opening it up, however that also means the ideal serving temperature has changed. Some of my wines require 1hr + to decanter, some several hours (this is on the recommendation of some of the sommeliers here in France)
    Is the correct process to decanter it outside the wine fridge for up to an hour or more, then place the decanter with the wine in it back into the fridge? I'm trying to figure out the right process for this, as I want the wine to be opened up perfectly but also served at the right temperature!
    Many thanks!

    Sooo, for a 1 bedroom apt, maybe a countertop or small one that holds around 10-12 bottles, you'd recommend which cooler for reds? I switch between Pinots and Cabs. I'm not trying to spend what you paid for these. I'm an occasional wine drinker and just want to make sure I keep them at the right temp for when I do decide to drink them.

    Very good info, thank you. Can you tell me if I can plug my regular fridge an my wine fridge on the same outlet, or will my circuit breaker flip off? Thanks again. Richard

    • @TheHomeWinemakingChannel
      @TheHomeWinemakingChannel  6 лет назад

      You should not have any issues. The Newair fridges are very low power draw. The thermoelectric one I have is 140 watts and the compressor version is only 90 watts so not much more than an incandescent lightbulb.

      The Home Winemaking Channel thanks. I Will have to check a little more myself on the peak amps that they both pull so if they both start at the same time the breaker Dosen t trip. Thanks for the info. Québec, Canada

    If the room where the refrigerator is going to be will get hot when not occupied then you night probably better off with a compressor. Most Thermoelectric refrigerators can only drop the ambient temperature by 20 degrees C (36 F) - Some rooms get well above 100 in warm climates when no one is there and air conditioner is turned off.

    I would like to know something about the thermoelectric wine fridges. Is the ambient noise the same or less than the ambient noise of the compressor fridge? For the thermoelectric models, is the fan always turning? If I'm not mistaken, the compressor fridge is completely silent when the compressor is off. Right? It's just annoying to hear the compressor turn on and off if the wine fridge is in the living room.

    Can you take unopened wine bottles in and out of the fridge? Meaning does the wine get impacted by changing temps up and down a few times.

    • @TheHomeWinemakingChannel
      @TheHomeWinemakingChannel  6 лет назад

      A few times won't be a big deal but up and down fluctuations over years are definitely a big deal. This really only matters if you are planning to hold wines in the cellar for a very long time. As the temperature increases, the wine will slightly pressurize and as it decreases a slight negative pressure will occur. This will slowly allow oxygen to permeate the cork and oxidize the wine. If the wine is stored on the side it will help. If it is a screw top it likely will have no effect.

      The Home Winemaking Channel thank you for the thorough response! Always wondered about that when cold stabilizing, and then allowing to return to room temperature. Sounds like theres limited impact in temp changes, which is helpful to know.
