    I've been using Wine Fridges for years. My advice to a newbie: Whatever size you think you want, go larger. Believe me, you won't regret it.

    Excellent video ! Had the chance to grab a 256 wine "fridge" for ageing during black friday. I think it is especially important to invest in a good fridge if someone plans to bottle age some of their wines for a long time. Cheers Matthew !

    You touched on a point that I seldom hear. I enjoy seeing my wines in one place in a neat clean cabinet. I also keep wines in my cellar (aka, the downstairs closet which is also household storage). The real benefit, however, is keeping the wines at a safe, consistent temperature.

    Bought a ~180 bottle fridge. Paid just under $2k total including "white glove service" where they delivered it inside the house and placed it where I wanted it. It's like 300 lbs! Worked great until the wines I used a Coravin on leaked onto the electronics. I figured it out too late so I now have a nice looking, expensive wine rack. The company didn't have anyone local to do warranty work and I didn't have the ability to get it fixed and then hope to get reimbursed. Someday I'll either have someone fix it or replace it. I now make sure I leave any wine I used the Coravin on standing upright for at least 24 hours. If I replace it, I'll get a single zone. The dual zone was like the one you have with the electronics in the middle. A single will have it on the top, so no chance a leak will damage it.

    I just purchased a wine fridge; not this manufacturer. (Ivation 34 Bottle Compressor Wine Cooler Refrigerator). Just filled it this week. Claimed 34 bottle capacity, I managed 30 using a couple of 500 ml and a couple 375 ml bottles. I did put both reds and whites in it. Using it for my about to drink wines while the “cellar” holds the rest (a hard to get to closet under the stairs; have to unpack it to find the bottles I want). One thing you didn’t mention was 750 ml bottle dimensions and how they fit or not fit. I found with mine that taller Alsatian/Riesling bottles don’t fit on the wine shelves as the door won’t close. At the bottom is a beverage shelf and the fridge is wide enough that I put in 4 of these on that shelf not ideal as if you want the bottle in back you can’t get it out without pulling the other 3. The top wine shelf is shallower so no regular Riesling bottles fit. Taller red wine bottles may not fit either. The rest of the wine shelves will hold standard Riesling bottles. Burgundy and Turley bottles (new and old size) will reduce the number of bottles you can put in but there was enough room between shelves for them. Looking back at the image they use showed all standard Bordeaux bottles.

    I find very useful to have wine fridges . I don’t have a proper cellar and I live in a warmer climate . So it’s really important to keep the temperature constant! Great video !

    Our 19th century house is built directly on the clay without a proper foundation - so when it rains really heavy as it did last year some of our back walls actually cries 😭😅 So to dig out a proper underground celler was just not an option here; so instead I converted a 3.4 m2 (11 f2) old pantry by slapping upp XPS insulation on the walls and ceiling and then tile them. Although almost 4 m (13') in height - and I'm just using half of that as of now - not sure how and if I will be able to utilise the full height 🤔.
    I've added a Winemaster C25 Monoblock that handles both temp and humidity - keep it at 10°c (50°f) and a RH of 70%. The C25 is dimensioned for 4000 bottles - if I remember correctly - although I'm not sure how I will fit more than 600-700 bottles without finding a different rack solution. But I will need to find a solution soon as I already have +500 bottles in there (mostly collected in the last 3 years) so it starting to get a little cramped.
    All in all I'm very pleased with my solution and the C25 is a beast that still keeps a stable temp during summer when it gets closer to 35°c (95°f) inside.
    Although my neighbour always point out to me that I should have converted the next door utility room of 14m2 (150 f2) to a wine celler instead - maybe he's right about that 😅

      @drmatthewhorkey  Год назад +1

      Hahahah the problems us wine people face… The hoarding of bottles!!! Nice little solution you came up with

      If you have the space (and no natural cellar) its just makes more economical sense with a climatized room than it does with the equivalent storage space in wine fridges.
      And, of course, we also know that it's every mans dream to have a walk-in fridge 😂

    I have wondered about wine fridges and their worth/value. We live in an apartment building, so there is no cellar. 😞 We use Ikea shelves to store our wines. They are in a dark corner in the coolest room in the flat.
    For us, it works, as I keep track of the date of purchase and vintage year. Over the last 8, 9 years, two or three wines went off, but that was because I over aged them. Live and learn.

    • @drmatthewhorkey
      @drmatthewhorkey  Год назад

    • @solomonmengeu1003
      @solomonmengeu1003 Год назад

      @drmatthewhorkey well, the drinking window is shorter. But also wines age faster, so wines designed for longer aging mature faster. It's a coin with two sides, ha!

    The thing about wine coolers, is they can work as expected for the first couple of years, then with no warning, it just stops working. Common with wine cooler. Many of them appear to us the same thermostats. I wouldn't be surprised if they use many of the same parts including fans.

    My local store owner always asks if I have a fridge and I say no - I don't mind the "Put a fresh red in the fridge 15 minutes before, take white wine out 15 minutes before" strategy from I think Konstantin? Either way, even if it is a nominal cost, it's expensive enough that I'm not chomping at the bit for it. Getting good Gabriel Glass Standarts though... That's bang for buck enjoyment :)

    • @drmatthewhorkey

      I dislike normal fridges for wine as they cool unevenly, but if you have a basement than that is definitely a budget friendly alternative. But no judgement, it's all about personal preferences!

    I have a 34 bottle wine fridge and love it, except that it does not my burgundy/pinot bottles. I have about another 50 bottles between the garage and pantry (not near heating source). How would you determine which should go into the wine fridge???Does the fact that some have been coravin'd change how fast/slow they age or stay preserved?

    • @drmatthewhorkey
      @drmatthewhorkey  Год назад

      I put full bottles in there. Yes those odd bottle shapes can fit weird at times. I put some Red Burgundy on the bottom shelf, which can be adjusted for magnums too.

    I don’t live in an area where I can make a cellar nor the space so I have to use wine fridges. I have three wine fridges that are not organized at all, some racks, and some stored in wine bags. How many sparkling wine bottles can you get in it.
