Hello WebMD. I appreciate your educational overview on ADHD. However, emphasis that the frontal lobe is actually smaller in people with ADHD is quite a bit misleading and will probably result in increased very inappropriate stigma. I would recommend you place the emphasis on the fact that ADHD is more of a problem with communication from the frontal lobe to the rest of the brain. Causing deficits in executive function from an otherwise almost normal frontal lobe. Showing a "shrunken" frontal lobe conveys a message that is not true in my opinion. Just some feedback, otherwise I'm quite happy with your educational Outreach. I'm happy to discuss it anytime, feel free to get in touch, Dr King.

Exactly. This just makes people think that people with ADHD are stupid and have small brains compared to others. That is so untrue, and potentially damaging. People with ADHD are some of the smartest, most creative and talented people out there, we just don’t know how to regulate certain things.

See my comment as I said above im not professional 'bug' lived with this for a long time now and have lots of inroads to a plausible explanation seeing as everything else is being taken down bit by bit by machine learning algorithms increasing our observational capacity for patterned behaviour across a sample I believe a more mature approach outside the existing schools with sites that seem mainstream i.e. psychology et cetera seem not to answer any more neurology for me has a much better and grounded viability to, could you confirm my train of thought

Kalleidoscape Exactly, so many people misinterpret the disorder, proceeding to group it with autism and such. I’m not saying that Autism makes you unintelligent, but society likes to paint Autism, along with ADHD, as making you less capable or unqualified to fit in with society. Although, sadly people with Autism suffer from the cruel world that likes to think of them as mentally impaired. ADHD does not affect intelligence and can even benefit learning, if provided with the right learning environment. I remember back in 1-3 grade, I would go to SPED class every day to increase my understanding of what we were learning in class. This wasn’t because I couldn’t comprehend the lesson in my normal class, it’s just that I couldn’t learn in that environment, being sat in orderly fashion, expected only to speak when raising my hand and keeping quiet the entire class. In the SPED class, I sat at an semicircle table with around only 4 other kids that you requested to be with (so basically everyone there was a friend you had that and I had ADHD) which really helped me since there wasn’t 20 kids around me..., and the teacher would sit on the inside of the semicircle. S/he would go over the lesson and then show flash cards with problems or words that correspond to the lesson. We are allowed to “blurt” out when the flash card was shown, and we were rarely expected to raise our hands. If some of us were confused, we were encouraged, and we felt comfortable, to ask for extra help on the subject 1 in 1. Another assist teach would take that kid(s) to a separate table to help them with whatever it is they required assistance on. This system was an absolute life saver for me and I highly encourage every school to provide this system to young kids with ADHD, but with the stigma in middle/high schools being that SPED kids are weird and outcasts, that would not be the kind of situation I would want to be in.

As a person clinically diagnosed with severe ADHD as a child. My treatment as a child makes a lot of sense. I was considered to have a flawed brain that needed to be “diagnosed” and cured rather than a ADHD brain that needed to be harnessed. There was very little understanding about how ADHD medication could effect my social development going through grade school and how there were other ways I could have been more academically successful. I’m glad recently people have figured out that it’s more of a characteristic than an outright flaw. That is not well represented in this video showing a drastically shrunken prefrontal cortex.

It's not a disorder if you master it.
It's makes you a super human, because the brain of ADHD person thinks so godamn fast that wants to do 10 things at once, and actually do it because people with Adhd hates to sit still.
ADHD person fails at sitting down, shutting up and be quiet. That doesn't exist in their world.
And sadly after that enormous energy of multi tasking... They shut down. Get into temporary depression because they didn't finish the 10 things they wanna do at once. But after a good nap or sleep, they get back and continue the 10 things... Or start another 10 things since they can't focus to finish things. That's a career killer for ADHD person, they get bored of the place, of the job, of the task and focus on moving to another environment instead.
The only solution I found for myself to fix this is:
To swallow Omega 3 pill everyday.
And write down everything that comes to my head, ideas to things I wanna do to things I wanna finish now... Everything everything
Because when the brain thinks so fast lots of good ideas and things needs to be kept sacred.
And change the working environment, either decoration or working on the back yard of the office.
    Trust me, writing down... Works
So my advise, you have ADHD?
Fuck all these who say it's a disorder, its not,
    it's not,
    it's not...
    Master it
Control it, not the other way around.
it's a superpower that needs an little training and I am sure you know that fact 100%
Go for it you little lucky ADHD you.

Couldnt agree more, i was diagnosed when i was 26, so i thought it wasnt a problem even though society put it that way, its just a way our brain process things differently,
as a result i owned 4 companies that are based on different fields, speaks 5 languages fluently, won 3 nation design competition, etc.
Although lack of dopamine makes us prone to be more anxious, but it is also the reason were not easily satisfied which leads to perfectionism.
Anyway the way i see it everything we have can be a blessing / a curse at the same time its up to us how we make it up to be.
      Also. Write It Down!

No videos about ADHD really discuss the positives of the disorder. Society likes to paint it as purely a disadvantage, but there are many upsides to it as well. I know that ADHD is random, but it is also genetic. I’m pretty I got it just by chance, but there are theories that ADHD may have been what allowed humanity to survive in the harsh world we used to live in thousands and thousands of years ago. My ADHD allows me to analyze one specific thing I find... interesting... important. Things that benefit me more in the moment than in the future. So I could be talking to a friend about something that affects me, instead of listening to my math teacher. Then either I get caught talking and get in trouble or I don’t understand the lesson. Back to how ADHD may have caused the success in humanity giving a big f you to natural selection may be that in order to survive in hostile situations, you must analyze everything in order to plan out the best course of flight or fight. Obviously this doesn’t work with straight up equations, which is why I enjoy physics, PE, geometry, and art. The reason I enjoy PHYSICS, is because I have a 3d shape I can work with and picture in reality, I succeed in this field better than your average student because my brain is wired to picture a real circumstance that could theoretically happen right in front of me. I’m not bad at mathematics, in fact if I’m given multiple algebraic equations, I can probably solve very easily as long as I understand why I have to do each individual process. What helps me still succeed in school is that I am a extraordinarily fast learner. I don’t memorize things by cementing steps into my head, I solve and remember by using logic that makes sense. If there a kid in your class that has ADHD and is struggling, wether it be from behavior or comprehension, you must know that that kid probably isn’t stupid, they are experiencing a normal affect of ADHD, that kid may need some extra help 1:1, but this is because they most likely can’t handle the format and fundamentals by which school is ran on. Traditional schools, at least in the U.S., are designed for kids without any disorders affecting the brain, which really sucks, and don’t think of ADHD as anything even remotely resembling Autism or similar disorders, and ADHD is completely different from ADD. STOP COMPARING ADHD TO ADD... PLEASE. Back to how I experience ADHD, at least for me, makes me notice every little detail, and course of action. Also, a lot of the time when I’m not stimulated by social interactions, I go into a trance. It’s like daydreaming but hyper realistic (to a degree, I’m not literally seeing dragons when I’m in class, I’m just imagining it super strongly and actually crawling on the walls, etc, like augmented reality but JUST BARELY really there). Something that I find very helpful for my ADHD is video games, they stimulate my brain just right, relieves so much stress, and I wish my Adderall made me feel that stimulated by math class. You can probably notice I have ADHD just by looking at how strangely formatted this comment is, but it’s a good explanation of how ADHD works for me.

While there are some things that we, on average, are better at that NT people, there are no scientifically proven upsides to having it. And some people calling it a ‘superpower’ is incredibly harmful to those of us who are literally disabled by it. It’s a simple matter of cause and correlation. For example, a lot of artists and professional athletes have ADHD. That doesn’t mean that if you have it, you are necessarily born artistically or physically gifted. It just means that most of us have a hard time with schooling and choose career paths that don’t require a lot of it, or we gravitate towards physical activities early on, because they alleviate the symptoms.
And while having ADHD may have been beneficial back when constant vigilance was an advantage, the most likely explaination for why evolution hasn’t “eliminated” (for lack of a better word) the divergence, is that our impulsivity and dopamine hunt leads to increased sex drives with a greater number of partners than in those without ADHD.
And a side note: according to the newest DSM, ADD and ADHD is considered the same disorder, and how you experience it depends where you fall on the spectrum. They are not completely different things, although those of us with the hyperactive/impulsive component typically experience life a little differently.

I can't help but to think add is very hard for anyone with an average I feel slowly moving brain I like to refer to as a lazy brain. Anyone else from the 90s may remember at least my school treated kids as if they caught some kind of disease that would spread to they like to call normal wanting to learn kids. Now either my brain seen the truth and they couldn't keep up with what was going on because as you get older like this video says their brain is more basically molded at a younger age there for their brain slows down at a younger age add brain or ADH brain is like a computer server the amount of energy it takes to have thoughts race through your head and maintain a functionable moving around life would mentality exhaust anyone that didn't have I had a hard time growing up after thinking I had something wrong but couldn't understand why my mind was normal from every grade until high school and I have used substances ever since thinking it was making me feel normal but I also noticed that I didn't want to go out my work week was exhausting things were done in a very slowly manner that I had to be reminded of on a weekly basis and it was a task to think about getting started but my brain was normal so well it's normal for me to be lazy and relax. I'm now excepting the fact that I have add ADHD without being hyper. I find myself getting mad and have to remind myself that I once acted like the young men at the work place I have learned to control my clearly overactive brain. And I realized I have OCD and when I figured out about we have a gland in our brain refered to a 3rd eye and the history behind it well I'm going to be happy to say this everything every sloth brain normies brain that's overwhelming drive of 30 minutes that's so mentally challenged I've been awake before the sun and finish 6 different things I tried for the first time and found it to be very easy while still feeling like nothing was done but you're dopamine was full when you finally got up in time for the trash Man. As much as I would love the feeling of achievement from such little things that is a reaction from a lazy person that has no drive to do anything that is not handed to them. I know some people are a little slower and may need things pointed out but why's that in history classes it's purposely told to look like some normal good thinking brain help build a world that has people who have a overwhelming drive. Add ADHD what ever you want to call it autistic and all these brains are some how a disorder or something not normal simply because it's something someone isn't capable of understanding. History has shown me humans are quick to attack anything they can't explain or scares them because they feel better when they see the pain they have caused that isn't normal thinking. I see a history of books that have many new additions because it is re written in a way that benefits the other ones can't let people know maybe they are actually doing the bully tactics and make a smart kid look as if he's weird because he's smart. I feel like I have been purposely held back by my teachers because they had no clue so we were put in a portable building almost done with a hate feeling because I was just thinking different I guess I can say discrimination happens just when you realize that it happened. Space x has blown NASA away from where they were in technology the amount of time that NASA has been slow thinking things here comes from the portable building in a few years he's accomplished a multiple unthinkable technology and still has a lot to finish while still ideas flowing anyway I'm going to shut up I'll go for hours remember one thing if you pay attention I have almost got it figured out before it happens now. Whenever you make someone else feel like you're smarter or they know your better they tend to turn to one thing and it's to attack you mentally or physically. Same as a baboon in the wild. Be smart and never let someone else make it feel any different

ADHD isn't just about being impulsive and having trouble focusing. A person with real ADHD may also have skewed perceptions of reality. If they have a concern then that concern will be real to them and any little thing that justifies it in their mind (even if there is no real connection) will confirm it. They will twist things other people do or say or things that happened. They may have trouble differentiating their thoughts from real world events. For instance they may insist you took an hour to respond to a message they sent while in reality it was only 15 minutes. And nothing you say to them will convince them that 'their reality' is not right. I used to think I knew what ADHD was until I met someone who actually has it. This isn't to offend anyone.

    • @calvin6235
      @calvin6235 6 лет назад +20

yeah that isnt adhd, i have it and have looked at a lot of research on it (i was diagnosed in grade 1 or 2). people with adhd have a broken sense of time, BUT seeing the message says "sent 15 minutes ago" can remind that person that it was that long ago, but i assure you that most of what you said doesnt fit adhd, your friend may have another disorder from the autism spectrum.

    • @thisisaname4661
      @thisisaname4661 6 лет назад

I've read that ADHD can make someone have skewed perceptions and the person I was talking about definitely does have ADHD. Diagnosed and they fit it to a T in almost every way you can think of. They refused to actually look at when messages were sent and exaggerated things a LOT and freaked out over nothing. They blamed this on their ADHD and anxiety. But maybe it had nothing to do with that. Maybe they just have a full blown case of the crazies.

    • @calvin6235
      @calvin6235 6 лет назад +7

ADHD goes from low to high, low would simply be a lack of interest causing the person to seem like he cant concentrate (due to less reward receptors in the brain).
In the worst case its the struggle to concentrate, along with forgetting day to day stuff like brushing teeth, forgetting where you placed stuff, struggle to talk in a way and mixing up words.
but nothing serious like changing their reality, that sounds more like a low level of schizophrenia that your friend has.

Jessica Postopoly no no I think you‘re to an extent right.
Your brain always tries to add information when it’s thinking something. Specially when you think, that you should know the answer.
People with adhd have problems to focus on what people say, so this their brain have more memories holes than normal people.
This can cause for this people to intentionally or unintentionally twist the past as they like.
Well at least this is what happens to me often. I can remember good what people did but not what they said

I have twin boys age 7 and they display all of these issues, but it started pretty much at birth. One lacks coordination and social skills but is OCD, the other lacks thinking skills but is very active in sports and playing. I'm just wondering if u or anyone out there has an idea how to get them diagnosed besides doctors?

Yes, but Einstein had smaller brains than any of us. If anything, having a smaller brain just makes the neurons closer to each other and actually make us think faster than "normal" people.

    BIOCHEMICAL IMBALANCE?
The term implies that there exists a measurable state of biochemical balance. The fact is no such state exists. The biochemistry of the brain, of the central nervous system, is in a state of ongoing ebb and flow, wax and wane, flux. One set of neurochemical proportions gives way to another, then another, then another, and so on. Anger is characterized by one set of chemical proportions, happiness by another. But within any episode of anger, at any given moment in the episode, the brain's chemistry may be different than it will be one second later or was one second before. Furthermore, the biochemistry of anger or any other emotion varies from person to person. What then does it mean that a person has a biochemical imbalance? Relative to what?

I believe it has something to do with producing and cleaning up the chemicals (specifically dopamine and norepinephrine) effectively and at the right times. I think that is why it causes the trouble with focus, but also makes people with ADHD able to hyper-focus 🤔

Now we are told all sorts of crap about ADHD. People with it can focus but only when something interests them? Well that applies to most of the population. How often do you or I zone out when something doesn’t interest you? We were told it was impulsive behavior. Now we are told people don’t have to be hyperactive or impulsive and aren’t always.
    So which is it?
We are told lost keys is often ADHD. Or blurting out what a teacher says. Or leaving a seat. Or running around. Then we are told people can just sit there and stare into space is ADD or ADHD. Or be quiet and do nothing!!!
This is getting f**king bizarre isn’t it? A disorder is on one hand people running up and down, climbing, bouncing off the walls, shouting, then it is people stealing cars and stabbing others, or shooting others, then it is people who sit there and space out, lose keys, do nothing and are quiet!!!
    Does this make any sense?
We are told people with it are creative and inventive.
So why is that a bad thing?

Also the DSM-5 description of ADHD might help explain the Inattentiveness, Hyperactivity & Impulsiveness, and how some people may only have trouble with the inattentiveness and other people may struggle more with the hyperactivity

      @@dreamingnight13 Just been reading this.
Can you keep your face straight and not laugh?
Signs of ADHD. And we are told there is science behind it existing.
This was on the CHADD webpage, an organization backed by Big Pharma.
FORGETFUL: Do you forget what people have told you? Do you forget where you put things? Do you need reminders for every day things? Do you miss appointments?
ACHIEVING BELOW POTENTIAL: Do you feel you underachieve? Do you feel you should be getting better grades than you do at school, or should have made it further than you have in your career?
STUCK IN A RUT: Are you having a hard time moving ahead in your life? Do you feel like you’re trapped trying to keep your head above water, playing catch-up instead of living how you want to? Are you stuck in important areas of your life, such as at work or in school?
TIME CHALLENGED: Are you often late? Do you often underestimate the amount of time that things take? Does time drift away? Do you have trouble ?guring out how long a task is “supposed” to take?
MOTIVATIONALLY CHALLENGED: Are you a procrastinator? Do you do things at the last minute or need the pressure of a deadline to get things done? Do you have a hard time getting started on tasks? Do you get partway done with many tasks but have trouble completing them?
IMPULSIVE: Do you do things without anticipating consequences (making decisions, shopping, driving, sex, drugs)? Do you blurt things out in conversation? Do you engage in risky sexual behavior? Do you make purchases without considering the cost or your budget?
NOVELTY SEEKING: Are you often bored? Do you seek out new, stimulating experiences to avert boredom? Do you say yes to new obligations when you are already too busy?
DISTRACTIBLE: Do sights, sounds, thoughts, or lower-priority activities distract you from what you should be doing? Do you ?nd yourself daydreaming on a daily basis?
SCATTERED: Are things messy in your personal space? Is there chaos on your desk, in your house, or in your car? Is it hard to stay on top of what you need to do, and when you need to do it?
      What science is that?
