    In this video Heimler walks you through another one of your required documents for the AP Government curriculum, namely, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter from a Birmingham Jail.
    In this document King responds to a group of white clergymen who have urged patience on the devotees of the Civil Rights Movement. But King points out that anyone who could possibly say "wait" in the face of injustice has never been under the humiliating lash of injustice itself.

    I do not see how the 14th amendment applies to a situation where the owner of a private business was engaging in acts of racial discrimination. Neither the federal nor the state government was involved. Indeed, private persons have a right to freedom of association. Which includes the right to not associate with someone by doing business with him.

    • @MicaiahBaron
      @MicaiahBaron 2 года назад +45

      Discrimination on the basis of race is a public matter no matter whether the business is private; it takes place within the state and the country, and a citizen is being treated as a second-class citizen even if only by a business. It 100% applies.
      Also, casual racism is still racism; your comment is not good.

    • @justinfranco5342

      @@MicaiahBaron - Speaking in strictly technical terms, the 14th Amendment does not apply to private businesses discriminating against customers. Congress used other sections of the Constitution (most notably the Interstate Commerce Clause) to give federal oversight to anti-discrimination legislation and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

      @@glennwatson3313 I'm going to assume you're just ignorant, since that's probably the most generous assumption here. The discussion was about the idea of not doing business with people based on race, which is racism. Not about talking about racism.
