IN this video Heimler walks you through Unit 3 Topics 11-12 for the AP Government curriculum. It's about how the Supreme Court and Congress has responded to civil rights movements, whether for black Americans, women, or LGBTQ rights. Black Americans won victories with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Women were protected form discrimination in federally funded programs through Title IX of the Education Amendments.
Additionally, we consider how the Court is always trying to strike the balance between minority rights and majority rights.

At 3:05 Steve says, "Title 6 says that discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin is illegal. But all the women in America sat up and were like, ahhh, really sounds like you missed something there."
Religion? But seriously, religion was not included as a forbidden ground of discrimination?

I believe that’s what the First Amendment is for…

@@heimlershistory I forgot to say, "Another wonderful video!"
The First Amendment forbids the federal government from discrimination on the basis of religion. And through incorporation by way of the 14th Amendment, the state governments.
Private colleges and universities are not covered by the 1st or 14th amendments. So the federal government said, "If you want federal government money, here are the rules you have to follow." I am somewhat astonished that religion was not included as a forbidden ground of discrimination.

You’re right about that. And I don’t know why they left religion out. If I had to guess, it would have something to do with Evangelical cultural dominance during the 50s. By 1964, though it was starting to wane, Christians were not yet scrambling for legal protection like they would be in the 70s when all the cultural upheaval threatened their influence.
