Great extension to 3D printing! I have been doing this all my life (model building and finishing) and can safely say I am still learning after 61 years!
Great piece. And video. Suggestion I was given once was to never use black or white unless it's the objects actual color, even as a wash. But to use VERY dark blues/ blue-grey/charcoal to blend in for shadows, and slightly tinted white for highlights based on the ambient light of the "atmosphere". If any of that makes sense. Been a long time since I've done any of that. Also you should show making a simple spray/draft box.
Absolutely love this Joe, I think this resonates with a lot of 3D print folks as many prints almost scream "color meeeee". Love it, please continue and go into the depths of techniques.
That look so easy, i just printed nice panorama with castle, going to airbrush now, to realize how hard is it without "art soul", thanks man, your result is awesome
I have an airbrush kit and paint sitting on shelf in garage never opened. I have to take the time to learn, so these videos are just what I needed. Keep it up please!
Usually I primer grey with flat spray paint then do the black wash, wipe the extra off and then start applying color. When applying reds, yellow and orange I use a white base coat in that area first to make it pop. Sometimes I'll dry brush a lighter color on the rocks, grass or whatever to show highlights. Fun video.
Excellent video! Just getting started in airbrushing/painting and this is a perfect intro. Flowing the dark wash into the spaces between the stones in the wall is something I had not seen before. I would have been trying to paint those crevices with a tiny brush. Keep up the great content!
Hi Joe, I haven't done any painting since my school days , some 40 years ago. I was contemplating having a go at air brushing, this has inspired me to have a go . Great upload, thanks.
Thank you, this is the video series I've been waiting for, if you do not have multi colour 3d printers this seems to me to be the next logical step in advancing this superb and very addictive hobby.
Thank you! Bought the cheapest possible air brush set. 3d Printed a Madmax skin to go over my N99 respirator. The bad guy from the latest mad max. His mask. I spent 3 hours!!! Air brushing this thing and finally called it a day. Not 100% happy but cant believe how amazing it turned out. Posted a photo on my IG a few hours ago @Respond_code3 If you still look at these comments on a year old video. Anyway. I thought someone who knew how to airbrush would of been done in a 3rd of the time. Glad to see even pros take hours to do a job. Was looking for tips on how to airbrush. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks for the video, great job and excellent timing. My airbrush will be showing up on my doorstep tomorrow for just this purpose. I’ve got three dice towers to print and paint and no way am I going to brush them all. I look forward to more videos showing how 3D printing can tie into other hobbies.
Absolutely awesome Joe! I have the artistic talent of a dead earthworm, so I am really blown away when watching such a talented person bring an inanimate object to life! I'm SO looking forward to more of these. :-)
Great work Joe, as a modeler myself I have been looking forward to this video. Keep up the great work. I got my first printer an Ender3 just after your mural was started and have been loving it ever since. Please do another community project soon as I would like to be involved next time.
Hi Joe. Thanks for video. This was my first time I saw 3d printed model airbrushing actually "live" - don't have lot of information about it. For me are yours instructions absolutelly perfect and detailed. I'm looking forward for new episode :-) Have a nice time and endless inspiration moments of creativity.
Wow! Great video. Don't stop now! I can't wait to see your next video in this series. Just goes to show that 3D printing doesn't need to be one dimensional.
Showing your hidden talents, Joe! Painting stuff never been my thing (AKA, I stuff up it up :-D). Still enjoyed watching somebody else do it on a 3D print.
Nicely done. I'm always on the lookout for techniques to finish 3D prints. Maybe you could extend this series into 3D print finishing in general. Joel Telling just did an episode with patinas and metal filaments. I think his results would have been better had he used an airbrush to spray on the finishes.
Love it joe,ive just spent the best part of £200 quid on Amazon ordering 3 brushes,a shed load of paint and a good quality compressor. I use to hqnd paint my models when I was a kid many many moons ago. Really looking forward to getting into airbrushing tho
Awsome I just got my airbrush last month and I'm learning to use it and hot to mix paints and thinner and a million thing more keep up the good work ;):);)
The only thing that I would have added to the video is talking about keeping in mind the direction of light when you do highlights and shading. You naturally did it as you painted, but not everyone can do it naturally.
Joe, you already know it, but this is fantastic work. You could certainly start a new series on paint finishing of 3d prints. However I should love to see this go a step further. Make models that are all on the same size base, that way the end result can be to make a big board to put all the pieces together to make a nice big dungeons and dragons type scene.
Joe...what a great video! This gives me a bit of confidence to try more painting myself. Can’t wait for the next one! Could you tell us what size needle you’re using in the airbrush? Thanks and please keep doing the painting videos!!
Well, true black paint (something that does reflect no light at all) does not exist. Vantablack is the "thing" (it's not a paint) closest to real absolute black that has been invented so far ;-) . Anyway great video. I'll try to paint something myself as soon as possible... tomorrow ("Procrastinators unite!")
Don Mega While you are partially correct, Black is not technically a color, it is the absence of color (or absence of light), and since in theory light can not escape the gravitational pull of a black hole, it theoretically exists (or doesn't exist...LOL) .
To bad I can only like this once. Leave us in suspense why don't ya! Patiently waiting on paint job for the structure. Thanks for this series, I'm loving it!
That was great. Funny thing, I printed this same model yesterday because I wanted to learn how to paint it. Great minds I guess! Thank you so much. I have never done airbrush so I need to figure a way to get into it without expending to much cash. Any suggestions?
Hey I know this is 6 days later, but if you haven't heard of this tip, I recommend using a heat gun to clear away the wisps on the 3D print. Only takes a sec for them to disappear so you'd want to hit it real quick
Hi I have a quick question. My son does some 3d printing and want to learn how to airbrush. What is a good gun to get in your opinion . Also the bemrand of paints. Thank you so much
Nice work but i would use reference photos and use Createx Colors Airbrush Paint but I do this for a living my style is different and can also dry brush this. You can also use 1 shot paint as well. If you want to get the stones to look real use black and white and turn your air pressure down to like 10 psi and then the paint will come out with a splatter effect.
just subscribed and I love watching this. do you have any recommendations for an airbrush set and some paints for someone who wants to give it a try? I am not good at painting and colors but you make it look easy and i would love to give it a try and not break the bank.
Thank you first of all :) to be honest I am waiting for a kit from lightinthebox which has a compressor, a few airbrushed and some paint, costs like 149 dollars. Hopefully it’s good enough for me to recommend.
This was awesome, thank you for sharing. I'm new to 3D printing, and just picked up an airbrush kit as well. I'd like to see more real-time footage (instead of speed up) of you airbrushing and painting with brushes just so I could study your technique some more.
Wow Joe you really have an awesome talent this was really enjoyable video to watch you definitely will get more subs and if you don't then there is something wrong with people watching this video and not subscribe thank you the model looks amazing when painted.
Love the video, project and paint job. Awesome. Just wondering, could the base coating of the parts be done done with a primer spray can? I use them on my Warhammer 40K models. Never painted a 3D printed piece so I don’t know if that would work. But it just seems to be easier and faster.
not sure if mentioned in the comments below, but could you also take some time to elaborate a bit on the paintbrush set you use. What too look for when you want to buy one, what you need in terms of equipment. for me that would be a big help. I always wanted to do this, but to be honest I have no clue in what to buy. For me , it doesn't have to be top notch equipment, so for me a guide to a "beginners set" would be awsome. Other than that, I enjoyed you video, and found it very informative.
I never thought about buying an airbrush. But you really making me want to 😲😃 This is so nice to watch. Don’t know if I would ever getting it to that level though.
Thank you so much for this video! Painting is a skill I really need to develop! I'm French and that's maybe why I did not understand some advices you had given. Like how do you scatter the first line of white paint for brightness? After this first model, Maybe you could print something (a big rocks) to explained the basics of painting on a 3DModel, brightness, darkness, using black in water between rocks.... If you do it can you please realize closeup with your camera on the painting area and on your tools? =$ A last thing : "Happy painting guys!" IT'S JUST PERFECT! XD
Great extension to 3D printing! I have been doing this all my life (model building and finishing) and can safely say I am still learning after 61 years!
I really love this video. This was the next step in my 3D printing path. i'm really happy you started doing this.
Thank you Joe, I feel after watching this I can make a somewhat decent paint job if you step back 5 or 10 feet. Gonna get me some airbrush.
Great piece. And video. Suggestion I was given once was to never use black or white unless it's the objects actual color, even as a wash. I just got my first airbrush kit thanks to you!
Hi Joe, I haven't done any painting since my school days , some 40 years ago. I was contemplating having a go at air brushing, this has inspired me to have a go . Great upload, thanks.
You’re an artist, my friend !!
This is so cool. I was just looking at airbrushed after watching Luke Towan’s videos, and then you post this. Awesome!
Enjoyed this project, can't wait for more
Thank you, this is the video series I've been waiting for, if you do not have multi colour 3d printers this seems to me to be the next logical step in advancing this superb and very addictive hobby.
Really nice paint work, I especially liked the earth colours going down on the print, looked awesome :)
Thank you! Bought the cheapest possible air brush set. 3d Printed a Madmax skin to go over my N99 respirator. The bad guy from the latest mad max. His mask. I spent 3 hours!!! Nice video and very clear explanation of the basic techiques (washing, highlightinh, shadows)! Can't wait for follow up!
Absolutely awesome Joe! I have the artistic talent of a dead earthworm, so I am really blown away when watching such a talented person bring an inanimate object to life! I'm SO looking forward to more of these. :-)
Thanks Ron :) just slowly getting back into it. I love how relaxing it is :)
This was fun and watch. You must do this more.
Great video, love to finish most of my 3d models and always love to see different ways to do it. Should make more videos like this.
Awesome video Joe. Looks fantastic. Some great tips and advice as always. Bring on part 2
Learn from the best! Ordered a airbrush set for using on my 3D prints.
This is like the 3D version of a Bob Ross video. Great Job! Looking forward to more in the future.
Awesome I just had my first airbrush come in the mail yesterday for this purpose, thanks for the video!
Same here, started painting/airbrushing models.
this looks awesome Joe. this is what 3D printing needs.👍 not just print.
Great video! Looking forward on seeing more how-to videos like this.
Great work Joe, as a modeler myself I have been looking forward to this video. Keep up the great work. I got my first printer an Ender3 just after your mural was started and have been loving it ever since. Please do another community project soon as I would like to be involved next time.
Great Video Joe, nice results on the model as well !
You're a talented man, Joe. Well done. My artistic ability ends at stick figures.
Hi Joe. Thanks for video. This was my first time I saw 3d printed model airbrushing actually "live" - don't have lot of information about it. great job joe

One of your best videos.
Thank you :)
You are a very talented man. I want to thank you for sharing this talent with me, with all of us.
Thanks buddy :)
Really nice Joe ! You should do more vids on painting ( Brushing and airbrushing ).
Looking good
Nice job! Thanks for taking the time to share your techniques. Can't wait for the next one :)

As a fellow hobbyist, a fun video to watch and looking forward to more.
Kudos thank you for your detailed video. This gives me some confidence
Love it joe,ive just spent the best part of £200 quid on Amazon ordering 3 brushes,a shed load of paint and a good quality compressor.
I use to hqnd paint my models when I was a kid many many moons ago.

Very very true, it’s a force of habit :) thank you for the suggestion :)
Looking forward to the followup completion video! :)

I loved it!!
Very cool. Great audition, btw, lol. Looking to paint the objects I print. This was very helpful. Thanks !!
Awesome job, first time watching a video about painting 3d prints. Well done!
Well done Joe I wish I could put the completed model in my fish tank
Awesome. Just Awesome
Looks amazing. I would have went for drybrushing on some lighter colors but this is amazing. I'd kill for a 3d printer for terrain like this.
Good Video! looks real good!
Joe...what a great video! This gives me a bit of confidence to try more painting myself. Can’t wait for the next one! Could you tell us what size needle you’re using in the airbrush? Thanks and please keep doing the painting videos!!
Fantastic. Great Video.
"Black is a man made colour." My cat is black... Do I have a paranormal cat ? Awesome video by the way.
If you look under a microscope, that’s a very dark brown ;)
It's kind of true, when sun shine on him, he has brown reflects. But what about coal and hematite and other black crystals ? ;)
They ara still not solid black, they are variants of a very dark colour. True black is only found in paint :)
Well, true black paint (something that does reflect no light at all) does not exist. Vantablack is the "thing" (it's not a paint) closest to real absolute black that has been invented so far ;-) . Please do more videos like this. I´m very noob and this kind of videos help me a lot. Thank you so much.
Just amazing....you should do more videos with painting 🤗 ...nicely done
To bad I can only like this once. Leave us in suspense why don't ya! Patiently waiting on paint job for the structure. Thanks for this series, I'm loving it!
Wow! Very arttistic Joe. Your audition has been succesful, you get the job :-)
Great video as always. You did a awesome job. Lol now I want start painting my prints. Thank you for all you do.
That was great. Funny thing, I printed this same model yesterday because I wanted to learn how to paint it. Great minds I guess! Thank you so much. I have never done airbrush so I need to figure a way to get into it without expending to much cash. Any suggestions?
Great video, really enjoyed it.
Try doing a before and after comparison at the end of the video to see the whole effect of what you accomplished.
Hey I know this is 6 days later, but if you haven't heard of this tip, I recommend using a heat gun to clear away the wisps on the 3D print. Only takes a sec for them to disappear so you'd want to hit it real quick

Very well done video! You are a man with multiple talents :P
Woah! Awesome video!
Some words by da Vinci regarding the topic of refinement: "Art is never finished, only abandoned."
Nice work but i would use reference photos and use Createx Colors Airbrush Paint but I do this for a living my style is different and can also dry brush this. You can also use 1 shot paint as well. Will you be at makerfaire NY this year? It would be so awesome to meet you!
just subscribed and I love watching this. do you have any recommendations for an airbrush set and some paints for someone who wants to give it a try? I am not good at painting and colors but you make it look easy and i would love to give it a try and not break the bank.
Thank you first of all :) to be honest I am waiting for a kit from lightinthebox which has a compressor, a few airbrushed and some paint, costs like 149 dollars. Hopefully it’s good enough for me to recommend.
hey
when are u making a complete review of the anycubic chiron ??
This is awesome! I've been thinking about getting an airbrush for my print and paint series!
This was awesome, thank you for sharing. I'm new to 3D printing, and just picked up an airbrush kit as well. I'd like to see more real-time footage (instead of speed up) of you airbrushing and painting with brushes just so I could study your technique some more.

Great video. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this video! I learned a lot from it.
I'll be looking forward to the next part.
Loved this video. Great comments during the video of the whole process with lots of tips. Will start purchasing a airbrush kit now :-)
Amazing Joe. I feel like I could do that where before I thought maybe it was too hard. Good job man.
got my gears working, airbrush kit in my wish list. thanks. what would be the best on amazon on a tight budget?
Love the video, project and paint job.
Awesome. Just wondering, could the base coating of the parts be done done with a primer spray can? I use them on my Warhammer 40K models. Never painted a 3D printed piece so I don’t know if that would work. But it just seems to be easier and faster.
It would still work just as fine, only reason I use airbrush is because you can have much more control on the flow of the paint
3DMN thank you 😊
not sure if mentioned in the comments below, but could you also take some time to elaborate a bit on the paintbrush set you use. What too look for when you want to buy one, what you need in terms of equipment. for me that would be a big help. I always wanted to do this, but to be honest I have no clue in what to buy. Just saw the info below the video... missed that the first time, thanks.
I never thought about buying an airbrush. But you really making me want to 😲😃 This is so nice to watch. Don’t know if I would ever getting it to that level though.
Do you need ventilation to do this in a small room, if so ..... will we see a DIY 3d printed fume extractor vid?
Just found this. Thanks!
Great job and very informative for me...
Next project... how to make a painting turntable out of used filament spools!
What is the turntable you are using? Haven't had much luck finding any

Nice tutorial.keep it going
awesome video !! thank you for sharing.
Would love to see more terrain pieces on here.
Super glad I subbed to you a while ago.. love your videos
Great video looking forward for more in the future so better keep making them lol thanks
Hey, nice video!
