Excellent tutorial. Well paced commentary with everything explained in detail. It got me from knowing zip about Unity to building my own scenes, so thanks! (I thought the calming intro music was pretty cool too). Nice job. Recommended.
Things I wish you mention on this video: 1. Prerequisites in terms of software, hardware and knowledge. 2. Overview of the game developer process from unity perspective. 2. Everything seems static, like the light and terrain, how will I change elements dynamically(in a game). When I start coding how things are going to be manipulated? 3. Installing unity while playing the video. Why do I need visual studio? Will I code on unity or visual studio or both?
You code in visual studio. Visual studio is like a text editor, but way cooler because it has multiple debugging and developer related tools. Unity takes the text files that unity generates and compiles them into a game. There is a visual studio alternative that is way smaller in download size and it's called xamarin studio (monodevelop), although since c# is made by microsoft visual studio will have better support.
Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial. You covered everything in enough detail to actually create something but not so much that a person would get lost. I appreciate it.
This was the first tutorial I have watched on Unity, and it was perfect for kickstarting my skills using Unity. Thanks MisterNinjaBoy for a great tutorial.
Take this advice to heart. You must correct the audio in this video. It's off center. It has a lot of DC in it. This can be heard when you pause your video and then press play again. Hear that click? That's the offset your audio is on. Any decent audio editor can remove DC offset. So do it.
When I put the script in the camera, the terrain started moving around when I moved my camera. I'm gonna go watch a better tutorial, hope this one gets updated or fixed.
This was a really great, no-nonsense tutorial. Thanks! I like how you stuck to the most important features (the ones you use the most) rather than going on a tangent about every little detail. Can you please show how to create an indoor environment? Like a space ship or dungeon interior, etc? Most tutorials seem to just focus on outdoor terrain.
Annie Trinity You mean the demo in the background that plays through around 0:14 to 1:45 ? Or like the intro at the very beginning? The graphics demo was made by unity themselves in Unity5, but the intro in the very beginning was made by me in after effects.
+MisterNinjaBoy hey I can't the terrain (as in I can't get stuff such a grass, water, etc.,etc.) yes I have selected game object and then selected 3d object and then selected terrain, but in the add terrain texture from edit textures, I only get: default checker, default particle, background, check mark, drop down arrow, inputfieldbackground, knob, uimask, and uisprite please help me out of this situation and how you get unity asset packages do I have to buy them at unity store or what, and how do I export and import please I really need the help.
I remember trying this when i was 11, now I am 14 and I want to get back into it, so could you guys tell me if there is a version of unity I could get for free that is not restricted?
Thanks for posting this, it could be really basic stuff for some people but for us starting with Unity 5 its really helpful stuff, I hope you continue posting tutorial videos and good luck with your fps game and school =)
A fact is a pragmatic truth, a statement that can, at least in theory, be checked and confirmed. Facts are often contrasted with opinions and beliefs, statements which are held to be true, but are not amenable to pragmatic confirmation. The word fact derives from the Latin Factum, and was first used in English with the same meaning: "a thing done or performed", a use that is now obsolete. The common usage of, "something that has really occurred or is the case", dates from the middle of the sixteenth century. Fact is sometimes used as synonymous with truth or reality, as distinguishable from conclusions or opinions. This use is found in such phrases Matter of fact, and "... not history, nor fact, but imagination."
You just have to take "Brush Size" and "Opacity" higher than 0. You can find it straight under the different brushes. Sorry for my bad English, I am from Germany :)
+Seki Banki scale tool don't work for me.. but i'm using terrain setting (on Inspector tab > click the "gear" symbol).. as u can see, There is a Resolution : Terrain width, length , and height..
Jeco Nino Asejo No it's a stealth game series, it plays in third person and pops into first person for precise aiming, just as an example of hybriding gameplay styles.
Great Job on everything I need to learn Unity in order to do this thing I want to do with this game I have and I needed a beginning Tutorial on unity 5 but NOT the ones I had encountered on their website did not need to learn how to roll a ball around it is rather I need to learn the interface, textures, and trees and objects how to do all the stuff you showed thank you so much you hit the nail on the head.

Just messing with ya as you can see. But a good tutorial otherwise and such as. Um as you can see.
Awesome Tutorial :) I was surprised how much I picked up. I'm already a fluent Multimedia Artist, Learning the Camera effects was icing on the cake. I subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos.
omg i saw your previous tuto before this one and i thought i clicked on another channel cuz your voice changed so much! and plz continue the fps game tuto
great video. one of the most helpful i have seen yet. i can most certainly excuse the "Umms" that everyone is complaining about, i know how hard it is to come up with things on the fly lol. but this was a very well put together and well organized video. i look forward to watching the rest of your tutorials. Also, in terms of suggestions, if you havent already, a 2d platform tutorial series would be nice. i realize that sounds easy, but today is my first experience with the engine
Question, which is considered a better starter program? Unity or unreal 4? I have tried unreal 4 and honestly i love it. But i decided unity was worth an equal chance because it has been used by god only knows how many people. Im trying to make a simple golf game as a starter and was wondering if unity handled it better than unreal.
Thank you so much for such a nice video ..... I learned lot in last 37 minutes .... thank you so much again for giving so much knowledge to UNITY3D beginners. You cover lot of feature in just half an hours.

Hey when you did the terrain and the white box on the floor popped up for you i tried to do the terrain and just a box came up that allowed me to move up down left and right it was a small one it wasn't like yours it had the arrows it wasn't like what you had yours was on the ground i know i did everything correct is it a setting? PLEASE HELP!
I followed the entire tutorial but when I add effects they disappear if I leave the game preview. They only stay if I add them when in scene. Is there a way to keep the effects in game preview so I can switch back and forth? Dunno what's going on.
Please help me. For some reason when I save the link and try to import it on unity 5, it keeps saying "Failed to import package with error: Couldn't decompress package" do you have any idea how to get it to compress? PLEASE HELP ME ANYONE!!! I would really like to make a game but this is holding me back. :/
VERY good and explanatory tutorial. Everything was clear and taught exactly what was needed for me to get started.
This tutorial is great. I'm a beginner and have had no issues following it. I look forward to doing more. Thanks for the great job!
Holy cow, your voice is deeper! (Came here from the link on the 4.x basics video.)

Wait, before we even start, is that intro made in Unity 5? Was it made by you? Because it's fucking gorgeous!
It was made in Unity.
Annie Trinity You mean the demo in the background that plays through around 0:14 to 1:45 ? Or like the intro at the very beginning? The graphics demo was made by unity themselves in Unity5, but the intro in the very beginning was made by me in after effects.
hope you keep these Unity 5 tutorials up man, saw the old ones and your really helpful. hope to see more in the future SUB!!
Take a shot every time he says "umm.."
+D3fr0s7 Im dead now

exellent job providing the demo package man, making this an interactive tutorial.. thanks!

JasonBellVideos Yeah my bad, when editing the video, overridden two audio channels when doing the transition by mistake.
No problem lol great videos man! I just thought it was my computer freaking out because i just downloaded Unity 5
my textures wont apply
+MisterNinjaBoy hey I can't the terrain (as in I can't get stuff such a grass, water, etc.,etc.) yes I have selected game object and then selected 3d object and then selected terrain, but in the add terrain texture from edit textures, I only get: default checker, default particle, background, check mark, drop down arrow, inputfieldbackground, knob, uimask, and uisprite please help me out of this situation and how you get unity asset packages do I have to buy them at unity store or what, and how do I export and import please I really need the help.

Great job, I finally have a basic understanding of how Unity works.
Great tutorial, thank you! :)
Your Back ! I Missed your TuTs So Much !
I appreciate the tutorial, but that's really janky to force people to subscribe and register in order to download the file.
this is a straightforward and solid intro. was helpful, thank you.
Is anyone else getting crackling throughout the video? It only seems to be on this one...
Yeah
Tim Stahel I get it when I pause / unpause the video and it's getting me crazy.
Tim Stahel I thought I broke my headphones again.

Only 1 recommendation. Please start more tutorials on unity 5. I love programming. Your tutorials seem really helpful!!!!!
I don't have "image effects" as a component..
+Ihate GooglePlus same for me no image effects
You have created a very systematic video which is most important point for making any tutorial video... love it dude.... Love from india
Still can't pronounce hierarchy lol.
Very informative video, thanks!

HALP!!! I have the blue spot, but when I click, nothing happens. I am on mac, using a default apple mouse.
If someone could help, that'd be great.
I got a reply on reddit, nevermind
I have the same problem how do you fix it?
f u. i thought that this community was nice.
You just have to take "Brush Size" and "Opacity" higher than 0. You can find it straight under the different brushes. Sorry for my bad English, I am from Germany :)
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you very much for making this. I now am comfortable with the Unity GUI and the basics of setting up a scene.
How do you make the terrain bigger?
Enomoto Takane what i do is just make multiple and add up the coordinates
You use the scale tool and scale the item to how ever big or samll you need it to be.
+Seki Banki scale tool don't work for me..
but i'm using terrain setting (on Inspector tab > click the "gear" symbol)..
as u can see, There is a Resolution : Terrain width, length , and height..
how to delete a mountain on the terrain...like not the whole terrain but only like a mountain
hold shift and left mouse button
Thanks. Really cool how you were able to spruce up the scene with the image effects.
thanks for this video tutorial it helps me a lot :D can you try to do a 3rd person view FPS tutorial on UNITY 5 please :D
A third person first person shooter?
exactly :D
Jeco Nino Asejo Hey it works in Metal Gear Solid.
The Zero Zero what do u mean by Metal Gear Solid ? is it a tut game ?
Jeco Nino Asejo No it's a stealth game series, it plays in third person and pops into first person for precise aiming, just as an example of hybriding gameplay styles.
thank you so much for the camera script. I dont understand why it was so hard for unity developers to put something like this by default.
Made this game with his tutorials, it's a little basic but I still learning: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrosoft.dashyball
Nice game.
nice job dude, how long did it take to make that game?
I really like how you use the ball at the light source.

I just want to say thank you for this. This is a big help, you've made my day.
such a good tutorial helped me so much i recommend this for anyone starting unity
If i want to make a 3rd person camera i just have to lock the camera behind the character?

I vote for a new FPS tutorial series using Unity 5! OAO!!
The editors from different games are helping me alot. For example: Terrain height editor is like in Cities Skylines. I knew what opacity does, thx to GD editor.
When I move the camera around during the demo, the house appears to by moving with me. I haven't accidently dragged the script from the TutorialAssets folder onto the AbandonedHouse. I've already checked. Could you suggest why this is still happening?

Hi. Excellent video. Very helpful and informative. I was wondering if you'll be putting out any new tutorials once Unity integrates Octane.
awesome helped a lot BUT I am getting an error.. the tree tallsingleA_90 couldnt be instanced because the prefab contains no valid mesh renderer.... any help with this?
How did you get it to show you the "Game" tab- with the skybox and all- while still having the selection set to "Scene"?
Great Tutorial to Start with.. Really Enjoyed
I've made one small step. Thanks for the video.
How's that little motion graphic at the very start made? What program?
When I press new project it shows {{template.title}} where the 3D & 2D should be, and the asset packages is getting mixed up with the Cancel, Back, & Create Project.
What should I do?
Nice tutorial! I think a tutorial on the settings in the Unity 5 engine would be cool as well, there are a lot of settings that people mis understand or mis conceive as something else, anyways, good tutorial!
