Every DJ must learn how to beat match , using their ears, if they want to be able to play in clubs!
Using sync or line matching is here in a big way and the truth is if you buy any brand new DJ gear these days it will have a sync function, which basically means you hit the sync button and it’ll match the BPMS and beats of 2 different songs for you making your transitions sound smooth, but you have to careful.
If you wish to play in clubs, most of the club gear is older as lets face it, venues don’t want to upgrade their gear too often, so if you don’t know how to beat match using your ears, you could turn up to a club and be in for a bit of a shock.
You have to check out my course: www.clubreadyd...
Currently on sale :) Trust me, if you want to learn to DJ and play in clubs, your journey starts here!
This dude has some of the best no- BS positive energy. Very cool 👍
I agree and I learned from him every time more . I mixing also in summary 9years but he do it over 20years . The reality is djing is a never ending learning curve. Best wishes from Germany Munich 🇩🇪

You're the first person I saw to actually explain the thought process behind "blind" beat matching.. Others more or less just say to cover up the screens and make it sound right without properly explaining how to achieve the latter. Thank you very much, kind sir!
Awesome, thank you!
The best way I found to explain it to begginers, without using waves or any sort of displays is ,think 2 cars on a speed way!Even if both cars have the same speed, you need to nudge one to put it side by side to the other.
Other thing is,Sync can be pretty handy, but if you dont know how to beat match by hear, you wont notice that the beat grids arent aligned at all.
This tutorial was my “Eureka” moment. Each step of matchng the BPM without syncing or looking at the beat grid was explained clearly, I have watched many tutorials on this subject and this is by far the most informative. You certainly have the knack for teaching. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks and stay safe.
Really happy to have helped :)
I don't even have any plans to ever DJ. I was just curious how DJ equipment worked because I'm a nerd. I watched a bunch of videos on RUclips. Yours are the only ones I found that are any good. Really incredible. You give a complete explanation of everything, leaving out no details. Even someone like me who knew nothing now completely understands. I feel like maybe I could even walk into a club and at least not completely fail even though I've never touched a DJ deck in my life. A++
whats does being a nerd have to do with anything
@@chudzij cuz no one in these comments came here without planning to DJ themselves at one point ~ but i guess this dude did (nerd) LOL joke
I’ve been DJ’ing over 20 years, toured the world and I still really enjoying watching ur videos. You never stop learning and seeing people’s techniques, tips and tricks is vital to always improving. Thanks for the share and keep them coming.
Awesome! Thank you!
Is that 'the' Kuffdam? Of PVD's Vandit records?
@@wez130 that's me
@David Erlstoke go listen to Kuffdam & Plant
Me too! 25 and counting! Its nice to hear someone putting in words some of the stuff we do by instinct!Love his videos and really like his enthusiasm!
"you'll probably get kicked off" love the brutal honesty and with a smile
I'm a young dj and I've only played one gig so far (in front of my university mates) and I feel no shame in saying that I have used beat matching sync on my humble DDJ 400. I was scared, I was shaking and I was feeling judged even before it all started but you know what, thanks to that little botton for sync I saw people dancing in front of me and having fun, enjoying the night. That gave me confidence to go on fr the entire night. I have learned and I now know how to beat match by ear but, speaking as a new generation dj I am grateful for that and I will suggest any beginner dj to do so, to use the sync button first. Thank you for understanding our generation as well and thanks for such amazing tutorials, you've got a new subscriber now!! Peace :D
Play however with whatever. If what results is devastatingly funky then thats all that matters.
I also have a DDJ400 and can relate to when Andrew changed the tempo and the key changed however there is no master tempo button on our controller. How do you combat this issue?
Daniel Reale in rekordbox there is a master tempo button for each deck - Near where the tempo of each loaded track is - turn it on and keep it on - if you can’t find it in the software just google where abouts it is
Daniel Reale it might be called key lock or something similiar in rekordbox I’m not totally sure
Don’t feel bad. I have the intro DDJ-200. It’s a toy! I’ve gotten more practice on Rekordbox on the computer and Tracktor. It’s fun learning.
I always hear you in my head saying ‘if you’re not sure, one more!’ Such a useful tip
I fully agree with your views on beatmatching! I learned a long long time ago with vinyls, even prior to the 1200!!!, and now I don't see the reason to complain about DJs using Sync other than what you mentioned... club gear and bad grid placing... otherwise use whatever you want... 99,99% on the dancefloor don't care about equipment, sync, software or whatever, just the music and the artistic capability for mixing. When CDs started to gain the scene vinyls DJs (most of us at that time) said that it wasn't and artform mixing with them, the lack of "touching" your music, and a whole bunch of nonsense... I don't get it, what is the difference between hitting sync and doing the whole thing matching numbers in a couple of screens? More time for long transitions... Having said that, beatmatching saved me quite a few times when something went wrong with grids or whatever...
Great to see a master DJ being honest on this... subscribed!
Damn so you learnt to beat match before 1972 when the Technics 1200 was produced?
@@RefugeetheDJ Nop, I learned to beat match around 1983, before I could afford a Technics 1200... I learned on a pair of SL-D2 belt drive... I eventually got a pair of 1200 for my own around 1986 or 87... Although I have access to them around 85/6 at a club... what a blast!. You need to factor that this was Argentina in the 80s... 1200MKii were really expensive. But thanks a lot for pointing out my age :D
I do love Traktor thou! ;)
If you could mix on belt drive table and learn to beat match on them you can do it on anything. I learned on Gemini BD-10 and a radio shack mixer.....
@@FitbodySolution i learnt on the cheapest nastiest soundlab belt drives, they had a mind of their own. Hittin the 1210's was luxury and very smooth. I think it dont matter what method you use as long as your funky.
@@FitbodySolution ahhh the Gemini belt drives...destroyer of new DJs souls hahaha
love the clock hand analogy moving 2 hours at a time :)

Oi, I’m only 39 mate!
🤣🤣🤣
you're 42 now how does that feel haha
This guy energy is very contagious in a positive way 😎😎😎😏😏🌞🌞 👍👍👍
I never comment but you buddy are something else!! That teacher that everyone wanted!! Keep them coming please and stay safe!!
Thanks so much, this makes me so happy!
Club Ready DJ School more than welcome! Every comment here is filled with nothing more than positivity and love for how good you are! 🎧🎵👌🏼
I’ve watch a LOT of tutorial videos but this guy is so good and explains it brilliantly.
You are such a great teacher. Very structured and easy to understand and above all positive! Thank you for putting up such great tutorials!
Your teaching style is spot on, I’ve been DJing for over 30 years and you can teach people in a few lessons what it took me years to figure out? And I’m still learning something new! Great content thanks. 🎧🎤😎
You’re an incredible teacher ! Thank you for this extremely clear tutorial with perfect steps for progress ! Was hard to find a good explanation of blind beat match, and found you 😁 thanks !!
You have the best dj tutorials on youtube. I've watched many. I've bought a $1200 worth of courses in the last four years. I'm going to buy your course next!
I appreciate this, you won't be disappointed.
Learned more from this video than the last hundred I watched. This guy knows how to explain things
Thank you so much I appreciate this!!
I learnt the hard way back in the late 80s/early 90s how to beatmix on a pair of technics, took me years but I could never quite get the flawless mixes some 80s Eurobeat Djs could do. Plus beatmixing by ear was very hard on your hearing, I'm now 49 and have constant ringing in my ears!
Rock on!
Honestly, I'm impressed. I've been to dozens of beat matching lessons but yours took the trophy. You made It pretty basic and easy to replicate. Nice work
Wow, thanks so much :) Glad I could help
So truuuue
these are not tutorials or how to videos, these are literally master classes! thanks man..
Excellent video! I already passed the whole DJ course and it's absolutely worth it! Started in 2021 with DJing and made some mixes. I joined a DJ collective in my city and even got my first live gig and it was amazing! I am about to have a few more live gigs, even on a bigger festival on a small stage. Andrew's course is so amazing, thank you very much!
Im actually using a cdj 850 without sync button it was difficult for me at the beginning cause I’m just started djing and your lessons help me a lot and I’m getting better and better today without sync button 🙏🏿🙏🏿
This is the greatest video for beatmatching! When I have some cash, I definitely get your online classes. You have a great way of explaining. Thanks!
I appreciate that you're the man!!!!
I agree 100 % with @Kenan. I watched like 10 of these and all were just course bait. This was very helpful. Thanks.
I DJ since 2004, but up until 2019 all I played was 4x4 house. Tech House, Deep House, Soulful House. When I started venturing to other genres, like 2-step UKG, DNB or Deep Dubstep I noticed that it was way more difficult and felt like I was learning how to beat match all over again. Especially for Deep Dubstep, where a lot of tracks have hats on weird places, sometimes sounding off beat and it just throws me off a bit, making me doubt if it's actually matched or not
I came from turntables in the late 90's and if you can't beat match and transition without any visual cues you just aren't ready to play clubs. It's not a knock against those who are using sync but it's a must for club DJ's.
I’ve seen several tutorials on beat matching but this is the first I’ve ‘got’ particularly on how to do it without sync/line matching.
Awesome, will be practicing this when I’m back at my decks!
Must be the best video on the subject.
Wow, thanks!
I am now motivated to do beat match by ear.. thanks a ton...
You can do it!
I have to say that the way you teach, your vibe and your channel are extremely positive and helpful.. Because of this video i learned how to beat match using my ears and not the visual aids. Thanks man✌️
A tip I saw on another video that helped me millions was to move the jog wheel in quarter turns so if you go the wrong way you know exactly how much to turn it back to be back to where you started. I don’t know if it will help everyone but it really helped me .
thanks for the heart haha and I meant a comment on another video, obviously your videos are the best ones
You can also check the equalizers frequency bars to see if the tracks are on beat I think. Haven't mixed in awhile 🤦🏻 great tutorial 👍
I rely more on line matching than just syncing. But I can beat match by ear pretty easily so I'm fortunate in that regard.
you can buy a microphone that clips on to your shirt mate, that way when you speak while you are playing music in your tutorials, otherwise thanks mate your my favourite DJ to learn off on youtube
excellent video! i just got one question. how do you beatmatch 2 songs where one of the songs has an intro without any bass? if you cant see the lines visualy i find it very hard to beatmatch because you only hear bass on one song.
can anyone help me? :)
I use the sync to match the bpm and I don't have a problem. I grew up using turntables. I have the ear to when to blend the two songs.
I love your energy and videos .thanks👍😍
Best beat matching tutorial on RUclips.
🙌
Many tracks couldn't sync because they have swinging bpms and not every beat lines up with exactly 1bpm on the same time to the next beat... . Sometimes 1,15bpm anything else. Sync is only a option for me to mach high difference bpms from one track to another. You are a very friendly happy also high advance DJ and Dj Teacher .
Thanks a lot for your amazing helpful clips.
Best wishes from Germany Munich 🇩🇪
Thanks, man! This tip definitely helped a lot. BTW, I love your channel! The tutorials are a lifesaver.
While I was working on a mix to upload on Mixcloud last week and last night, I've noticed this: certain songs with the same BPM - if I pair up two of them for mixing - doesn't always come out right if I transition from one song to the next. That's why I use my ears to beat match while using the jog wheels. Now, off to my practice!!!!
Great help come across as a proper sound a genuine lad 👍
I watched your video til the end and found myself smiling at the end. Great great work you're doing there mate. Thanks
Amazing. This is the video that finally convinced me to buy your DJ course. 👏🏼
Great to hear!
You are a very humble gent. Thank you for your videos and always waiting for more!
You are the best , you really explain everything that is ment to be understood , even better than others , so keep it up , I've alredy subscribe to your channel when I saw the first tutorial because I consider you a very good teacher.
I love your authenticity!
Like your style dude, been hooked with house since 1989 and used technics for a while in the early 90’s. Got my new CDJ’s a couple of weeks ago with a DJM 900 mixer and I’m starting from scratch with digital music. I would be still scratching my head looking at the set up without your tutorials. Thanks for your help !
SO as a DJ that learned how to beat match in the nineties. I agree that using master sync is not ideal mostly because I make micro adjustments throughout my set and how hard is it to slide the tempo first to match the other and use the tempo slider at that point to make fine adjustments along with the plater rim to slow down or advance that track a bit.
You're a superb teacher mate! Really positive energy and very clear instructions!
Thank you I really appreciate this.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Very usefull! And I agree with you, every DJ should know beat matching by ear. For sure software analysis is very unreliable and I went through the shock when club equipment had broken connection, so the sync was not working... Some songs have irregular changing speed, good beat grid and sync can take care of it, but without sync and without the knowledge of beat matching... Yeah... really big trouble!
Mixing music is about feeling the music and playing with it... so beat matching by ear is really a must 😎👍🤜🤛 not just being a jubox 😜
Great tutorial. I'm currently using a DDJ-1000SRT which Serato makes it easy to beat match.. But now looking forward to do it on a CDJs 2000s 👌🙌
This helped so much thank u so much!!
You are a legend man! Really great advice in all your videos, appreciate it greatly and keep em coming.
I've just become a subscriber to your channel, you make these techniques very easy to understand and I always appreciate someone who preaches the value of not doing things the easy way, and learning proper technique. Huge fan, and will be checking out your courses as my DDJ-SB3 arrives this coming Thursday! Be well brother 👊🙏
Man thanks so much for that . Super simple and easy to follow . Now to find a deck .
Awesome lesson, sir. You have a great attitude and your methods are clearly instructed. You have a new subscriber! Greetings from Southern Cali my brother.
Hey mate! I love your videos! Can you perhaps do a video about how to mix techno the best way? I already saw the tech house vid but I am more talking about the non-lyrical techno :)
Good idea, 100% YOU want to send through some tracks / artists you would like me to include as teaching examples :)
Club Ready DJ School Nice! I can’t wait! An artist with good songs to mix with is Kevin de Vries. Some other artists I like are Charlotte de Witte, FJAAK, Amelie Lens, Kobosil, Regal, Spektre !
@@vvyllnn These artists are insane, give me a few weeks as I am balancing so much right now, but this will get done 100% excited!!
Club Ready DJ School oehhh yess!! Cant wait
@@vvyllnn I just went to do some research and there's not much out there, thanks for the tip. I'll enjoy this one and it'll be good to do some mixing vids again - my fave!!
13:37 i knew you were gonna smash it in perfectly hahahaha
he's too experienced. like asking a bike rider to wobble.
Leet
that´s why i prepare all my tracks that i wanna play to 140bpm and record them in that version. so no problem with beatmachting.
Give this man a bells!!! Love the openness to different approaches! I personally beat match by ear, however I’ve found myself using sync more often as it gives me more time to read the crowd and plan my next songs and transitions into that! Also not a fan of DJs who play 20 songs in 20min, sometimes 40 songs in 20 mins hahaha. (You mentioned this in another video on club equipment). Anyway great channel, subscribed!!
Thank you for this excellent lesson! Going to practice my beat matching now
This is a great video. I found other videos from other people didn’t really explain the difference between sync and manually matching the bpm. Keep it up! :)
Awesome, thank you!
Can you do a video on music preparation in recordbox? Like how to prepare your music and export to a usb to go play at a club. Theres no tutorials for this topic that I could find so I can prepare music to play at a venue
Great video, thank you very much for the explanations and sharing the knowledge. I’m just learning to DJ and needed a nudge to learn to beat match, this was it! Also love your energy!
Coming from a person that make different types of beats this was helpful
Such the perfect video! 👌👌👌
Hopefully your students look back to this... Man!!! 🤔🤗
I'm running an xdj-xz after years of different equipment and I still believe the best way to learn to beat match is getting on the vinyl. Tricky as it is, it's more about ears and more natural, holds better and well, line matching I find is just always a little out for some reason 😐😊
I've bought your course and I'm trying to give it a go like crazy but if I can just get personal for a sec¿ Lol. I have an issue with self-doubt and for being interested in decks/equipment and over all "the sound of music" since I was 11 and, is what I've lived my life around. So going over everything again as much as I absolutely love and appreciate your teaching (like fk yeah!!) is, (being almost 40 lol) me doubting myself in some ways. I believe I play and choose with a good ear some really nice tunes, new style techno really (acid tech - the darker/deeper ish + the rest hehe) 😀 which as you've found lately, is some very beautiful and pure dance music to work with (appreciation to producers 🙌🎼💕) hehehe 😜
I'm rambling like crazy haha
BUT,,, For anyone learning to dj on whatever it is they're using, you are the man dude 👌👌
You seem to have a lot of time for newcomers and that's a beautiful thing man 🤗 you're a fantastic teacher!!👌🎼😉
I believe I say a big "thank you" on behalf of many ppl/passionate DJ's 🔊🎼💕
Anyways, while I try my best to get over the anxiety of trying to contact you haha I just want to say "well done man!!" 🙌
And,,,,
Thank you 😊🎼💙
Very informative. I will practice
This is excellent, well done
Best DJ teacher I’ve found on RUclips. Thanks mate!
Outstanding and very informative! Awesome, you have a great teaching style
Another great and informative video.. Thanks
I have always been dependent on beat sync but the guy I work with has more experience and he uses the BPM faders and the jog wheel and his ears to match the tempo of both songs. I really need to learn the Manuel way of beat matching more.
Go to my channel and search "advanced beatmatching" I have a video all about this and I also talk about it at the beginning of my "hard techno" set
Hi. I like your tutorials. Help me a lot. Thank you Mr
Really amazing video, homie
Love your channel and the way you explain everything.
Love from Israel 3>
Thats clever to learn on same song to start of with
Thank you !!
Welcome!
Thanks for that educational video, you really explained this well!
I play Drum and Bass and I have a Pioneer XDJ RX2 Controller (I'd like to have the Nexus setup, but it's too expensive haha) and all the visuals are on one screen and you're tempted to look at them all the time, even the wave displays are on top of each other, so you can see if you're in line. Caught me looking at it over and over again, but now I've covered the BPM and wave display and am learning beat matching through my ear.
Thanks for this video and keep up the good work, you are doing a great job! You should have more subscribers!
Man i freaking love your videos and your personality :D much love from Sweden :D 😍🔥😍🔥😍
Thanks so much, you have no idea how much I appreciate this :)
Awesome tutorial Thnks
Such a positive energy!!! Perfect explantation, my number one teacher!
Excellent tutorial. Even though I play mostly vinyl I usually have at least 2 bpm counters running when I play, and while I usually match the bpm's I still mix "blind", just because the bpm's match it doesn't mean the tracks blend well with each other. Half of the music I play wasn't recorded to a click track so you must use your ears, and you also should know the music that you're playing inside out. Perhaps it's just because I am a percussionist but if you can't mix contemporary pop club music blind you probably shouldn't be playing music in public. (I noticed when I shopped at Wax the DJ's behind the counter would beat match records they hadn't heard before, without headphones.)
Controllers are amazing makes the who fast transition and different pace and style of mixing but nothing beats that vinyl feeling when you read the notches and know the tunes to get the drops right and then fighting a turntable as there old and one always plays a little faster even though it could be recorded at a certain speed on the pitch fader haha. Good vids mate Love the enthusiasm
Hard to truly beat match when the bpm is staring at your from the jog wheel in bright colours in a dark room lol
Good stuff u do, help me alot thx
SYNCH BOTTOM IS AN ADICTION, A BAD ADICTION TRY TO BEATMATCH WITH THIS TECNIC IS A GOOD WAY TO START :) NICE VIDEO
Thanks bro, love your videos!
Syncing is fine in clubs when you just want to get a perfect mix but if you’re at home it just gets really boring, best thing I did was ditch my cdjs for a pair of turntables. No laptops, no screen, no sync just you a mixer and a couple of turntables - so much more satisfying! Buying new vinyl and building a collection is a lot of fun too!
Very true :)
That's exactly how I feel and I have been in the DJ game ( House Music) for 37 years. Anything other than vinyl is just boring. I will give it up before I go digital.
Beginning with vinyl in 2007 🎧 almost 3years for perfection in beatmatching .. now im into digital too😔
Fantastic tutorial brother. Very clear. Now feeling inspired to have a go with my gear - even though it’s a controller. I should be able to hide the BPM’s and have a shot at it.
Really good and helpful video
If you are a rekordbox user. You can switch to browse from 2 horizontal or vertical. This will take the visual line matching out. Then just don't look at the BPM. It's not hard to not look at the BPM it's tiny in this mode.
This is the best way to learn to beatmatch by ear on a controller in rekordbox.
When you think you have it inline then switch to the 2 horizontal. That will let you know. But be careful because you will be surprised at how many of your track lines are out and your ears picked it up.
Has anyone taken his paid courses? Are they worth it? He seems like a great teacher and I am a beginner.
I am in the process of doing Andrews course, I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.
Hey thanks for the great video, helped me a lot! You mentioned in the vid that sometimes Rekordbox incorrectly analyses songs and that there is a way to fix that. Would you be able to tell me how, or point me in the direction of the video where you explain it? Cheers!
So funny, comming back to DJing after bout 15 years. The ONLY way to sync and match songs back then is kind of one funky way to do it nowadays
Love it thank you ❤️
Bravo
I'm so glad i learned on Vinyl in the late 90's.
Respect :)
The best way, I specifically went for the Denon SC5000M's for that vinyl feel, and treat them as vinyl too, no sync buttons here, it's more rewarding!
Sure thing, once you masterized beat matching the old fashioned way on vinyls, you're able to do it on ANYTHING else 😉
Great video! Super clear
