Alicent is a better written Sansa in many ways, she really did the best she could with what life gave her. She did everything that her father and the kingdom expected of her unlike Rhaenyra that didn't sacrifice anything to be what she had to be, did uphold a higher standard which she had to do cause she was suppose to be the future queen after her father. Alicent was a victim that responded to her trauma and robbed chilhood in the best way possible, she followed tradition and yes she did do somethings that were awful and she made mistakes and she hates rhaenyra for a lot but she also loves her, and she just wanted what rhaenyra had/has freedom to do everything she wanted but she could never cause unlike rhaenyra, alicent does not have a father that truly loves her and respects her and lets her choose things, a father that never used her as a piece on a board, a father that defented her till his last breath, alicent had a hard life as a kid, she never had a choice over her own life and she was utterly and completly alone. I love Rhaenyra, but Alicent is not the villain she is just the victim of a game that she never wanted to be a part of, but after she became part of it she needed to play or she could lose everything and i know that she does not want that tbh she has played the game very well. Sansa also played the game and won but if you have read the books on hotd you know what will happened next season and if there are more seasons to come.

Love Alicent in the show. What happened to her was tragic, but I really wish she hadn't continued to sabotage her own family because of her fears

I believe, that after episode at Driftmark, after she saw that when the time comes, no one will stand behind her and protect her children or show them mercy that they, as children, desereved, something in her changed irrevocably... And while she was desperately trying to redeem herself for what happened between her and Rhaenyra that night (because, in the end, I don't believe she wished for this), deep down she understood that only she can protect her children and acted on it.

@@chrl_ I definitely disagree that only she is the only one that can protect her children (though maybe you just mean that s what was going on in her mind, and not that you actually agree) because there were several chances for her to go for peace with Rhaenyra rather than petty revenge, which would have prevented all of this.
Like Rhae's offer to wed their children. That would have put both their sides of the family on the throne. No reason to betray Viscerys's wishes, and no war as a result.

@@ExElliexE I disagree with that because at that she completely lost trust in Rhaeneyra, which is understandable considering that Rhaenyra actually demanded for Aemond to be tortured. So why should Alicent trust that Rhaenyra would not kill children or if she would trust her there is still Daemon who she never would trust to show mercy to her or her children. At to this that Rhaenyra never really tries to rebuild the trust or reassures Alicent that she would no do anything against her. Also the offering of having there Children wed would not solve anything but would only put the greens at a disadvantage since Helaena could and would be used as hostage and with Jace by being a bastard that could endanger Heleana as well since that could potentially make room for a new civil war. While Aegon still is seen as the legitimate heir just by being male which would have undoubtedly started a conflict even if the greens didn’t plot to take the Iron throne.
