New Japans presentation just hits different. The cameras focus less on the crowd, they generally stay with handheld cameras on the floor, the commentary, the way the referees act, the bombastic entrances. It all goes towards making it feel more like a real fight, more like you’re watching UFC.
If you want stories, WWE and AEW are putting on those kinds of shows, and I love following it week to week because of that. If you want to see the apex of what wrestling can be, it’s new Japan.

As someone whose seen at least a few matches my biggest complaint is that the action doesn't flow that well. Even in the clips their showing to the backdrop of Meltzer praising their technical superiority you can see this good solid beat where the guy catches that kick, that enzuigiri and then there's this lag where it looks the guy just decided to fall. Alot of smaller promotions that get all this praise are like that including ROH. ROH has many matches where I've seen a number moves look like non sequiturs of motion. They'll just pull these seemingly random moves that don't seem to follow the preceding action or there will be these long pauses where their not showboating or menacing the opponent. Theyey kind of sit or stand their like potatoes that breathe. All the while their treating us to the live theatre equivalent of dead air (I'm pretty sure plenty fans joked WWEs rest holds but at least that was something). WWE at least in the late attitude era on through the Ruthless Aggression era was always very good about keeping the action fluid yet crisp filling any gaps with some kind of characterizing action by the wrestlers.

id argue OG NXT was the perfect balance of both of these styles. i find njpw since it doesn’t have that instant built in pop factor for certain moves, sequences etc. it needs to achieve this by constantly raising the stakes and ramping up the action, njpw is starting to get notoriously bad for overusing false finishes, overusing finishers themselves etc. because that’s their main point of consistency for working the crowd and getting the fans invested, whereas, as meltzer said, wwe builds its fan investment through familiarity and consistency in its in ring performances, fans are conditioned to be able to see the real finish coming, whether it’s how many kick outs have happened already, a ref bump, the way the finisher is performed, how things are countered etc, all these things make wwe matches far more predictable in the end, but the journey to the finish can be far more enjoyable as the fans can follow it right to the end and be able to see where it’s going, and the action pops the crowd far easier when the crowd is familiar with certain sequences and moves that they know they can expect to be pivotal in the build up to a finish. the original nxt i think found that perfect balance of both of these, it worked the crowd in the wwe way, having escalating drama not by one upping moves, but through certain theatrics, familiarity with sequences etc. but they still leaned heavily into getting that njpw unpredictability factor, where they subverted expectations much more than main roster wwe did, with much more variation in their false finishes, sequences etc. that’s why i think the original nxt had some of the best wreslting style of all time, people always simplify it and say nxt was basically wwe’s way of presenting “indie” style wrestling, and although that’s quite a surface level way of looking at it, i think that’s right, wwe i think provides the best version of story based wrestling and wrestling that’s specifically tailored to garner a certain planned reaction from the crowd, whereas indie wrestling tells its story as it is and allows the crowd to follow in their own way and react in the moment much more organically, and they achieve that with a much more technical style where the match is almost escalating, the only issue with that is when you’ve done thousands of matches you can only keep escalating so far and subvert expectations so many times before people do start to see it coming, which is why nxt was so perfect, it took that amazing indie style and foundations of technical wrestling but added in the more theatrical base of wwe as a way of escalating and subversion rather than doing it purely through the in ring work and moves, nxt took indie wrestling and put it in a new context that made it feel fresh again, for me ur recaptured what made indie wrestling so big in the early 2000s. nxt was the first promotion/brand in a long time that truly presented a new style, which in the modern era is so difficult to do.

The same place where they lock up, nobody gets the better of it so they simultaneously kip (kick) up at the same time to a pop. They then do arm drags for 30 seconds into a headlock. They then trade transitional moves for a few mins, one gets thrown outside the other suicide dives out to him to a pop. Then they get some colour, table spot, back into the ring trade more moves. Hit a finisher each, trade forearm shots, drops to knees, more forearm shots, collapse again, no sell a big move followed by flexing and a scream, some flippy moves, trade finisher again, 2 count, then do some wrestling holds into a big strike into a finisher with the match finally ending after 87 minutes. @@leonconnelly5303 I've watched the Omega Vs Okadas. Omega Vs Ospreay, Jericho Vs Omega. Some other lad Vs Okada. Fuji water or something I think his name was. Highlights of some "New Japan classics". Every single Japanese guy that comes to AEW put on the same match with AEW guys. I'm talking about AEW guys aswell btw. All the same matches. I'll tell you how WWE is different. If something happens like somebody gets put through a table or hits their head on an exposed turnbuckle, they don't wrestle for another 15 to 30 mins. It's all down from there which makes the spot significant. WWE holds in wrestling usually aren't always entertaining because somebody eventually gets the better of it and somebody switches it up and throws a strike. It doesn't always end in nobody getting the better of each other and they kick up simultaneously. Finishers are more significant and even in WWE they've gone down the drain a bit since a bunch of indie guys joined which is annoying but whatever everyone in wrestling is like that. WWE can also tell a story through their matches. Somebody can actually be dominant, it's not always a slugfest with the same spots like trading shots, no sell big strike, taunt do a big strike back and drop to knees and continue trading there. That's every AEW and NJPW Main event ever. That shit can't happen every match and you be called a good wrestler because it's so lazy. WWE also don't botch anywhere near the amount of AEW or NJPW. I keep saying AEW aswell because they're tightly linked with NJPW and have a lot of their stars over in AEW. WWE is superior to both wrestling companies in practically everything. WWE can be repetitive. I've seen so many dumb rematches that are the exact same match but in fairness a lot of that was around Covid. There are things WWE are really dumb about I know but repetition has NJPW AND AEW STAMPED ALLLLL OVER IT.

Both styles have merits and it seems both may have longevity. The question is can NJPW's style take them to a larger widespread audience. Sadly the average WWE fan doesn't even know they exist.

Aka the WWE focuses on entertaining the crowd and hopefully telling a story, while New Japan just do a bunch of moves until they call for the end of the match, and then try to figure a story and entertainment somewhere in there.

I only watch Japanese wrestling during AEW shows but if that is a sample then what he said couldn't be further from the truth. Some matches were really cool and the only thing that was flat was the finish and this happened several times too Osprey vs. Omega being maybe the most egregious example where they just hit a bunch of moves at the end with no build up (including a botched Tiger Driver) and it ended. There is a reason why you want the audience to pop on certain moves and why in games they are called signature moves and finishes, because they should setup the ending and then finish the match, you want to get creative about the psychology of the last quarter of the match and not necessarily about the whole thing or the moves themselves.

In this short, the clip of The Rock doing the sliding People's Elbow was way cooler than anything from NJPW, maybe the editor was trying to bury them on purpose.

  • @apolojetx

He really did take a long time to simply say "No, I don't prefer the WWE style." NJPW is amazing, but a major red flag for a bias is when the person doesn't even acknowledge there's any real to be suspected of bias. That means he's either completely blind to it, or he's being deceptive. It's ok to have a preference, Dave. Just say that.
