Elliniko is a village in the province of #Gortynia and is located on the route between #Stemnitsa and #Karytaina.
Its population is 204 inhabitants, while the oldest name of the village was #Mulatsi - a word that in #Slavic languages ​​translates as mule.
References to the village exist since the 16th century, in relevant censuses of the #Ottoman #Empire.
Anyone looking for a small, quiet and authentic destination in nature, with a relaxed and calm landscape, then the Elliniko that stands next to the bustling #Stemnitsa is ready to welcome its visitors.
In Elliniko it is clear that the stone dominates everywhere and is ideal for walking on the picturesque cobbled cobblestones,
looking at its traditional houses with their #wooden gates, stone fountains or the bronze statue of Theodoros #Kolokotronis that dominates the central square.
It is also worth a stop in the shops, looking for fine local #products such as honey, handmade pasta, herbs and mizithra.
Admire the school, an imposing yet glamorous building in the central #square.
The church of Prophet Elias of 1904 gracefully dominates the horizon.
At a short #distance from Elliniko, on the banks of the Lousios river, lies the ancient Gortyna.
The finds include, among others, the foundations of the #temple of #Asclepius and its thermal baths as well as parts of the city.
The importance of the #Sanctuary of Asclepius is proven by the visit of #Alexander the Great, where he dedicated his armor and spear.
On the local paths and hiking trails you will discover #Arcadian nature at its best.
And you can combine #sports #activities on the river, #cycling or horse #riding.
Elliniko has only two taverns that offer traditional cooked food, game and #appetizers, made based on the fresh ingredients that are available every time!
Try the wild boar, the salad with cabbage and hot pepper, the lamb with traditional noodles, or the mutton in greaseproof paper, rooster with noodles, braised veal with Tsakonian eggplants and boiled goat.
