Come and take a trip to the beauties of Central Greece, discovering the town of Trikala, the main attractions, the Elf Christmas Mill and nearby excursions.
Trikala is a particularly picturesque town of 70,000 inhabitants through which the Litheos River flows. It is 200 kilometers from Thessaloniki and about 300 from Athens. It is located in the center of mainland Greece, very close to Meteora and Kalambaka, next to the mountain massif of Pindos
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, while the modern city is built on the ancient Trikka or Trikki, a name given to the Nymph daughter of the deified Pinios river. Mentioned by Homer in the Iliad, it follows the fortunes of the rest of Greece through periods of prosperity and disaster. At the beginning of the millennium, the city is presented for the first time under its current name, Trikala, in a writing by Anna Komneni. The Ottomans call it Tirhala, while in August 1881 it will be integrated into the kingdom of Greece. A large part of the local population are Aromanian Vlachs who are distinguished for their industriousness and housekeeping.
Trikala is a city that has always pioneered innovations and developments. In 1906, the first Agricultural Cooperative in Greece was founded here. Today, Trikala stands out as the first smart city in the country, integrating new 5G technologies into the daily life of citizens, such as self-driving vehicles and providing government services through e-governance, pleasantly surprising other Greek cities.
Since 2011, the Mill of the Elves has been operating in Trikala. Every year, for 40 days, from the end of November to the beginning of January, hundreds of thousands of visitors from every corner of Greece and Balkan countries come to Mylos, the largest Christmas theme park in Greece. Specifically in 2017 over 2,500,000 visits were counted. The Mill of the Elves managed to establish winter and Christmas tourism, with the creation of smaller Christmas villages in various regions of the country.
The Byzantine Castle of the city was built by Justinian on the ancient Acropolis of Trikki in the 6th AD. century. In the 17th century, the Ottomans placed a huge clock on a tower, accompanied by a bell weighing 650 kilograms. In 1936, another clock was installed and it remains to this day the trademark of the city. In the third part of the fortress, from the bottom of a well, a tunnel started that crossed the hill and ended on the road to Kalambaka. Today the Fortress houses the outdoor theater of the Municipality, while the clock can be visited, offering a view of the whole city.
The old town, or Varousi, is located on the outskirts of the Fortress. The picturesque alleys became known as "Stena tou Sakaflia" by Vassilis Tsitsanis. The mansion neighborhood of Trikala is in its entirety preserved, with houses built between the 17th and 19th centuries. and numerous churches.

The Asclepius of ancient Trikki, the oldest and most important of Greece according to Strabo.
The 16th century Osman Shah Mosque designed by Mimar Sinan. Behind the mosque is preserved the mausoleum of Osman Shah, nephew of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
The eponymous Hammam is a twin Ottoman bathhouse built next to the Litheo River. Today it has been restored and can be visited, while the upper floor of the building houses the Tsitsani Museum.
Old Manavika is a neighborhood of the city with characteristic, uniform architecture. Some of the best taverns and coffee bars are located there.

20 kilometers north of Trikala are Kalambaka and Meteora, world-renowned destinations that need no introduction.
Finally, 15 minutes to the east we find the Trikala Gate with the unique bridges and then the Paleokarya waterfalls, Elati and Pertouli with the ski resort.

Πολυ ωραιο το βιντεο, ωστοσο δεν ειναι αυτα που απεικονιζονται τα μαναβικα. Αυτη ειναι η ανακαινισμενη λαικη αγορα των τρικαλων, στο παλιο εμπορικο κεντρο της πολης. Τα μαναβικα ειναι η συνοικια απο την αλλη πλευρα της κεντρικης πλατειας και ειναι κριμα που δεν υπαρχουν πλανα απο την περιοχη αυτη, γιατι ουσιαστικα τα τελευταια χρονια αποτελει την καρδια των Τρικαλων
