✌️ ------ I think the owner had recently changed at the place I stayed at. if it had been more expensive, I would have complained more, or if I was staying a longer time. I was 100% expecting this reaction, but hoping I was wrong. Cancún has, unfortunately, become the very picture of a tourist trap. It's just resorts, overpriced things and a distinct lack of authenticity. If someone is willing to accept all this, it's an... *okay* destination, but anyone wanting even a modicum of culture will find it's all been paved over by ugly high-rise resorts.
Yeah, I knew what I was getting into before I even decided to go, and was still disappointed on top of that. It feels like Disneyworld Mexico or something, where people go to say they've traveled to Mexico, but really, it's a pretend image of Mexico that only caters to families and all-inclusive tourists. I was hoping I could find some other interesting things there, and while the museum was cool (despite the one guard's attitude towards me), even the ruins were pretty underwhelming. Sanitized? Maybe that's the world I'm looking for? Thanks for your thoughts! ✌️
Cancún is a young city; it was founded in the 70s. Most of its population consists of immigrants from other states of Mexico who went there primarily to work. For these reasons, the city doesn't have a culture...
Yeah, I discuss this quite a bit in the video, that it's only really existed as it is, since 1970. I just think it's very far from what I think of when it comes to Mexico, especially after seeing so many incredible places in the rest of the country. ✌️
If would have been the other way around more likely.and ready to comment with : OMG what underdeveloped city....friend mexico has everything modern cities , magic towns , colonial cities , beautiful beaches , hard working people ....just depends where you want to go and how much you want to spend....the country has it. !!
Oh I know it does! I've been traveling through since August, and have visited 25 places now (and have almost 50 videos on my channel just from Mexico). Some of the best places have been the smaller, pueblos magicos. But everywhere has great friendly people. I hope you will check out some of my other videos as well, to see how much I love Mexico! ✌️
Quebec City is my favorite city in Canada, especially the old part of town inside the wall. I recently visited the OTHER walled city of Campeche here in Mexico, which was pretty cool too see. Thanks for watching! ✌
Yo como Mexicana he visitado una sola vez Can Cun. Creo que no ire mas a Can Cun.
✌️ ------ I really debated on releasing this Cancun video at all, as I didn't want people to think I was just hating on it because it's such a popular spot.
Cancun is overdeveloped. I went there for the first time in the early 90s and it was already packed with tourists but mainly Mexican. Ten years later I came and was shocked of how much more developed it was to the point that you were not even able to see the beach from the main road. Is packed with tourists from everywhere. A lot of drunks and not that naturally beautiful as it used to be. Now with the train I can only imagine how much more developed it is.
Yeah, I even noticed on the public bus over, you couldn't see the water at all, despite how narrow that whole strip was. I was wanting to do a repeat of my video from San Jose Del Cabo, and check out the beach from a local perspective, but I couldn't even do that. Thanks for watching and your comment! ✌️
Love the museum with the beautiful artist pieces & the carvings are fascinating. I love all the historical artifacts, the ruins are the only places I would be down for, feeling the historic background of these ruins is more dramatic to me, than all those fancy hotels & the crowds, thank you so much for sharing this
Yeah, it's just not my kind of place I guess. So many other great places in Mexico that I've loved, but I felt it was important to show the other side of it as well. Thanks for watching! ✌️
Head south out of the tourist zone and it slowly gets better. Playa Del Carmen is a bit of a blend, but catching up :(. And then further south is Tulum. There are oceanfront pyramids and structures there, and even further south like Coba. Valladolid is the city near the Chichen-Itza complex and its well developed but also rustic. Better to head north from here and check out Merida and hop on the Mayan Train. 🚂
@@user-xd1ze4jf6e Yes, I came from the gulf side, up through Palenque, Campeche, Merida and Valladolid, loved all of them. Even took the train from Palenque (you should check out the videos I have from those places). On my way south from Cancun already, and soon heading into Tulum and beyond. ✌✌

But I did feel like I had to put that one out there, to be honest with myself and followers about the good and the bad stuff. We are definitely free. In my case, I was free to leave Cancun and move on to the next place. ☺️✌️
✌️ ---------- Oh I agree, as I mention, for fly-in and fly-out resort destination tourists it's probably great. But yes, for someone who's been wandering through Mexico now for five months, it's not a great place to visit. I think it was worse because of the poor experience I had at the market on day one, as well as the experience I had just in the city. I had some amazing food while there, at some local restaurants, but that was really the highlight for me. I know that other backpackers and travelers will come to Cancun after hearing how great it is, and so I thought I would just publish my own personal opinion based on my experiences. Thank you for watching, and your comment! ✌️
--------- I knew it was not the place for me from the time I arrived. It was the same feeling when I skipped over Cabo San Lucas in BCS, not my kind of place at all.
💯 concuerdo. It's ok if you just want to laze on a beach or enjoy all-inclusive drinks in a plush resort, or nightclubs like Señor Frogs/Cocobongo. The museum looked okay apart from the jobsworth. The archaeological site was cool. I wonder where the tourists were, probably eating at Bubba Gump's, 2for1 Taco Tuesday night 😅 the accommodation looked alright, better than my capsule hostel where they had the AC cranked up so much you had to wear a fleece to bed 😂 appreciate the mention! I had a feeling you'd feel the same way 😂 the TrenMaya is very close to the airport I believe, but the timetable didn't seem that convenient. Cheers!
I know, I know, you were right! 😂 I think the accommodations would have been nicer with a window, and actually matching what I booked. The pillow was like three sheets of tissue taped together though. Yeah, I only saw a handful of people at the ruins site, a few more at the museum, but it kind of felt like most people who visit Cancun aren't going to go there anyway. I had to google jobsworth, but yeah, that's the perfect word for it 😂✌️
I was surprised at the lack of Uber/Didi Ride in Cancun until someone told me that it was a "Taxi only" city. The taxis were definitely expensive to get around, which is why I walked to my hotel from ADO, and then took the bus over to the zona touristica.
My place that I stayed was only a 5 min walk from ADO and then I used the bus to get out to the tourist area. I usually avoid taxis whenever possible, unless it's too far to walk or it's a downpour and I have my bags with me. Thanks for watching! ✌️
I actually like Cancun, but farrr away from the tourist areas. The areas and beaches where the normal people spend their time are great like everywhere else in Mexico! Had some great days at the northern beaches, minibuses run everywhere, surprisingly decent food n all. Just gotta avoid the gringo lands whatever you do!
Yeah, at that point might as well just go elsewhere 🤣. Holbox was only an hour away and was so much better, and I really enjoyed Playa Del Carmen too. But I know others like it, just got my cup of tea. Home you guys are doing well, only three more stops in Mexico for me. ✌️
@@wanderbeard The beauty is you won't run into any white tourists though! Don't write her off entirely aha I swear things are nicer on the outskirts. Then down through Central America? Do enjoy it's a beautiful part of the world mate.
I've gone to Cancun many times, it does feel a bit of an artificial destination with not a lot of authenticity. The beaches are VERY nice however, and if all you want to do is lounge around and swim occasionally and maybe do some excursions, great. But don't expect deep interactions with locals or getting to know the culture necessarily. I think the only person you'll end up speaking in-depth with outside of your travel group will be an overly fancy sales person trying to get you into a time-share. Most of my trips there were with my folks as a teen, but I did end up going to Playa del Carmen a couple times later recently which has more of an organic city vibe than Cancun. I think if I end up going on a tropical vacation ever again, it would probably be Puerto Vallarta again as an adult either with friends or solo. Honestly, I'm kind of done with tropical vacations, I prefer doing photography in scenic cities and exploring restaurants and museums/architecture and have had FAR more fun in Guadalajara, Zacatecas and Mexico City.
Yeah, I sort of suspected all that (and was warned as such before hand), but was still hoping to find "something" of interest. Guadalajara and CDMX were both amazing experiences. I hope you check out some of my other videos too of some of the other 20+ places I've checked out. Thanks for the comment! ✌️
CDMX is great, you'll have an awesome time there. Tons to see and do, great food and lots of activities. I have a few videos up from CDMX and the area around it. ✌️
@@wanderbeard I'll check them out. Here in USA, malls aren't much. Down there: Coapa rose like the Phoenix after the Sismo in 2017. Oasis is nice too. I like the San Juan and Coyoacan Mercdos. Plenty of places for alitas (chicken wings).
Yes, and that was the cheapest one around. It wasn't bad. The bed and shower were good and the AC worked well enough. If it were for more than three nights, I'd probably be more annoyed than I was.
✌️ ------ Yes, the other places I've visited (and have made videos for..) in Yucatan and QRoo have all been really wonderful experiences. Lots of history, amazing food, and most importantly, wonderful people. ✌️
😊 Cancún is a designed city, it was planned just as it is: a tourist destination with only little more than 50 years of existence, so of course is crowded and expensive, it didn’t grow like any other Mexican town or city. Of course as a touristy spot it has its scams and abusive taxis so you have to be careful. That being said, I’ve been there +50 times and I love it, since I was young I had great parties there and now with family I’ve had fun vacations. I was expecting you not to liked it because you value other things and you doesn’t seem to like crowded places and that’s fine, everyone has different tastes and we must respect everyone’s opinion. Anyway, as always, interesting video.
Thanks for your balanced comments as always, I appreciate it. I really liked CDMX and Guadalajara, and other larger places, and I enjoyed the other places in the Mayan Riviera as well, so far, this one just felt off. Glad you enjoy it though, and thanks as always for watching! ✌️
@ I completely understand your POV, I’ve been in cities that I didn’t like but I think that’s more on me and my way to appreciate things than the city itself. Keep wandering and showing us new places, honest points of view are always welcomed.
@@yomerito3320 Yeah, I'm glad other people enjoy it and found value there, but it wasn't for me. I'd rather be honest about it, even if I'm in the minority, than try to sugar coat it ✌😊
And it’s so far removed from “mainland” Mexico, that most locals speak a Mayan dialect instead of Castilian Spanish, and the government is run by the cartels (along with all industries like hotel, taxi, tourism..)
Saludos… poco a poco…
✌️ ------ Yes, I understand that for some it's good, it's just not for me. I'd already trraveled overland from the rest of Mexico, so I didn't need Cancun to go on tours to Chichen Itza or other places, as I already vcame from there on my own, before Cancun. Mexico City was fantastic, lovely city full of interesting things to do, same with most of the 25 other places I've visited in Mexico (and have mostly positive things to say about them all). I avoided taxis in Cancun, and in most places I've visited. I tend to either walk it or catch an Uber. (Of course Uber is not available in Cancun...). But the rest of Mexico has been amazing, and I've had an incredible time here over the last number of months. I hope you will check out some of my other videos as well. Thanks for watching! ✌️
You do realize that comparing Holbox island to Cancun is comparing Tombstone AZ, to San Diego? Holbox island is 26 miles long and 1.5 or 2 miles wide. Cancun is like 800 square miles!! Of course, walking around an island is better than walking around a city,,,,,, You should have gone to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum instead. That is more of a walking around town. I lived in Playa for a few years.
I've been to 25 cities/towns now in Mexico, so I've seen a bit of everything over the last few months. From the biggest cities to the smallest of towns. Playa and Tulum are two of the last few places I am hitting up before continuing on to Belize. And I never said it was a direct comparison, just that I preferred one over the other, and there's likely lots of first time visitors who only see the glitz of Cancun, so I thought it was worth sharing my own experiences. ✌️
@@wanderbeard I think you will like playa and Tulum a bit more than Cancun. Don’t get me wrong the vendors are relentless everywhere (that’s their job) in that area. Getting around is much easier and the culture and traditions are easier absorbed. Safe travels
I guess I'm the type that Playa was created for in the first place, for people looking to get away from Cancun hahaha. Thanks for the comments and for watching! I hope you'll check out some of my other videos too! ✌️
I’ve watched enough videos to know when you do something different with your hair 😂it wasn’t until you got back to hotel that I was all oh it’s back to normal 🎉 Also I hope you at least gave them ugly looks for pulling that hotel room switcheroo!
Hahaha, well now I feel like I'm being actively studied! 😂 I gave them a good frown of disappointment, but in the end didn't follow up about it with booking or anything. Just closed that (very short) chapter and moved on.
7US maybe, but being from Canada, that's 10-12 back home. I try to avoid the hotel zones and stay at local places, either smaller hotels, homestays, etc.
-------------- Yes, I agree, 100%. Holbox hotel was nice, was up off the ground with a great view, and was much more relaxing and fun. I sort of felt like I was in a prison in Cancun at that "hotel" I stayed at, with no windows.
I was in Oaxaca back in October and have a few videos from the area. I've been traveling through Mexico since august and have almost 50 videos from your wonderful country! Oaxaca was a great time! ✌️
I mean, there's lots of luxury places in national parks. When I was in Yosemite (I know, different country, etc), but there were places near Yosemite that were upwards of $2000/night or more. But my intention with Cancun was to showcase the local side of things there, to get away from the tourist zone, but in the end, I didn't find much other than the Mayan museum and ruins, which were in the middle of the tourist area too. At least I tried, and now I know based on my own experiences, not just what I see online.😂
@@wanderbeard yep, there are luxury hotels in Yosemite surroundings but no in the park itself. Same as Cancun you can go to nearby places like cenotes, beach towns, islands but the city is just a city and the hotel zone is 100% tourist oriented
I avoid taxis most places I've been across all of Mexico. Just better to walk it if it's not too far, or stick to public transportation when available. I keep hearing horror stories about the taxis though. Thank you for watching!
A lot of places have started doing this around the world. You can take a still photo, but a video requires a media fee. Probably to get a cut of this RUclips cash flow ;)
@@user-xd1ze4jf6e Haha, I wish there was a RUclips "cash flow" 😂 It's funny, because recording on phones is no fee at all, and the cameras on those are often almost just as good as any GoPro style camera.
First, I'm not American. Second, I'd never stay in a resort to begin with. Third, I've been traveling across Mexico solo overland for five months and have had zero problems. I've visited some 25 different places in Mexico by myself and it's been a fantastic country to explore. Friendly people, everywhere I've been. I've made almost 59 videos on my trip across Mexico too.
Bahamas maybe, but no interest in Miami at all. I was in Fort Lauderdale a while back, and I've been to other parts of Florida too, just not my kind of place at all.

✌️ ------ With many other tourist areas, I was able to find something away from the tourist parts to show the other parts of the city, a more local vibe.
Shower looks too low for you? Thank you Santa
Haha, no it was good, I got under it without having to crouch or anything. 🎅
---------
I knew it was not the place for me from the time I arrived. It was the same feeling when I skipped over Cabo San Lucas in BCS, not my kind of place at all.
Very thorough, thank you.
No problem, I hope you found it informative. Thank you for watching! ✌️
There isn't a square foot of beach that hasn't been barfed on by some spring break partiers.
🤣🤣
I had to google jobsworth, but yeah, that's the perfect word for it 😂✌️
@wanderbeard I didn't know jobsworth wasn't used this side of the pond 😂 definitely the word for that guy 😂
One of those weird British words like bangers, or piccadilly 😉
@wanderbeard you haven't lived until you've been served bangers n mash in Piccadilly Circus by some jobsworth of a waiter 😎
Hahaha, I have a title for a future video now! 🤣🤣
There is a controversy, which says that there are taxi mafias and they charge too much for the trip.
I was surprised at the lack of Uber/Didi Ride in Cancun until someone told me that it was a "Taxi only" city. The taxis were definitely expensive to get around, which is why I walked to my hotel from ADO, and then took the bus over to the zona touristica.
Well, the Taxi have their own “union” and they will beat the shit out of your Uber driver.
another video interesting moment ..... congrats and enjoy your day
Thank you as always for watching! Appreciate the support! ✌️
Cafeful with the taxis, world famous for the way they treat tourism.
I'm going to CDMX in April. Haven't been in 2020. Been there 8X.
That room seems a little rough for $50 CND / $35 USD a night....LOL
Yes, and that was the cheapest one around. It wasn't bad. The bed and shower were good and the AC worked well enough. If it were for more than three nights, I'd probably be more annoyed than I was.
------
Yes, the other places I've visited (and have made videos for..) in Yucatan and QRoo have all been really wonderful experiences.
@@user-xd1ze4jf6e 😂 that’s so stupid, please do not consume fentanyl if your going to write a comment
Saludos… poco a poco…
------
Yes, I understand that for some it's good, it's just not for me.
@@wanderbeard
I think you will like playa and Tulum a bit more than Cancun.
I know horrible, nothing like Puerto Escondido or Huatulco
If you go down south to Bacalar
I am planning to head down there before I cross over to Belize.
I gave them a good frown of disappointment, but in the end didn't follow up about it with booking or anything. Just closed that (very short) chapter and moved on.
Your not in the Hotel zone all of Mexico? no way theres huge Markets in Mexico 150 pesos is 7.OO dollar
7US maybe, but being from Canada, that's 10-12 back home. I try to avoid the hotel zones and stay at local places, either smaller hotels, homestays, etc.
--------------
Yes, I agree, 100%. Holbox hotel was nice, was up off the ground with a great view, and was much more relaxing and fun. I sort of felt like I was in a prison in Cancun at that "hotel" I stayed at, with no windows.
Come to Oaxaca it's Beautiful and chip great good food great people and puerto escondido come over. The Mexican pacif Beautiful and chip
I was in Oaxaca back in October and have a few videos from the area. I've been traveling through Mexico since august and have almost 50 videos from your wonderful country! Oaxaca was a great time! ✌️
Man, a backpacker going to Cancun is like a turist going to a national park expecting luxury experiences
Yes The taxis!! 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽 They want to take advantage!!! I hope soon the government put some order on taxis!!
I avoid taxis most places I've been across all of Mexico. Just better to walk it if it's not too far, or stick to public transportation when available. I keep hearing horror stories about the taxis though. Thank you for watching!
“The government” in Cancun is the cartel.. good luck
video recording fee? more like scam fee >:V
I'm used to them, and don't really mind them, I just wish those that worked there understand what the extra fee I paid is for. ✌️
A lot of places have started doing this around the world. You can take a still photo, but a video requires a media fee. Probably to get a cut of this RUclips cash flow ;)
@@user-xd1ze4jf6e Haha, I wish there was a RUclips "cash flow" 😂
It's funny, because recording on phones is no fee at all, and the cameras on those are often almost just as good as any GoPro style camera.
I don't understand why you Americans venture out of the resort when you have everything there. lol You're literally asking for trouble.
Try miami or the bahamas 😂😂😂😂 its way better.
Bahamas maybe, but no interest in Miami at all. I was in Fort Lauderdale a while back, and I've been to other parts of Florida too, just not my kind of place at all.

not a backpack, a backpack patch of the flag of Mexico.
150 pesos at today's exchange rate is 7.25 USD, where in the hell did you go to school
CANADIAN dollars, where I'm from. (I don't know the USD off the top of my head, because I don't use USD.)
I agree, CANCUN is very racist
I never said it was racist. I'm not sure how that is what you took from my video.
@ ok Correction, CANCUN IS very racist….experienced it first hand!!!

With many other tourist areas, I was able to find something away from the tourist parts to show the other parts of the city, a more local vibe.
Unfortunately, I didn't find any of htat really in Cancun. As I mentioned, glad people enjoy it, but for me, it wasn't great. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, I do appreciate it! ✌️
Comentario elitista.
