- We made our very own homemade drum sander! It was quite the engineering challenge, but so fun to do something different here. We have wanted/needed one of these for years and it's going to make sanding a little less awful! The sander we were looking at cost $1200 and we were able to build this one for around $200 (we had the motor already) saving us $1000!

Really good build and a pleasure to watch! I like the clean and simple look of it. As you mentioned in the video, bolting down the motor is a good idea. Prevent that big mass form moving and shaking.
Oof that would not be good. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I have built a drum sander in the past from plans on RUclips and it just never worked very well so I'm wondering how this is working for you. It has been a few months so is there any problems you are seeing with the design. I'd really like to build this but don't want to spend north of $300 and then find out it has problems. Please do another video showing how it's working since July. Thanks.
I was thinking of doing this...with the guts of cheap harbor freight 79 dollar drill press(for the motor, switch, cord, belts, pulley, etc.) & a replacement conveyor belt roller with bearings, but needed the housing idea. I think you just helped me bridge my gap from concept to drum sander. Thank you! Ill be grabbing your plans for the housing. Keep up the good work young sir.
This came out great! Love custom shop tools. The split grit feature is mad smart. It'll be neat to see how you guys upgrade it overtime as you get more hours of use on the sander.
Yaaas. Thank you!
Amazingly simple. I like it, great job!
Thank you so much!
Keep up the great work! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome project.....like the versatility and overall design... great job
Thank you!!
Awesome design, build, and video! 😃👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻 .. Really cool drum sander Y'all!
Thank you Fred!!
Love your videos! Wishing you all the best!
Thank you so much!! Comments like these keep us motivated:)
Love the build! Buying the plans later in this month. Please move the Serger to cleaner quarters. Your thread, material and machine will thank you and last longer. Voice of experience here. My wife and I love your work!
Haha they have a home, we were still using them while still making this video :)
Literally busted up laughing when Molly started singing our favorite TikTok audio!
Hahaha I’m OBSESSED with TikTok 😂😂
Killer project guys!
Thank you!!
Nice looking sander Dylan! Thank you for sharing it with us!💖👍👌😎JP
Glad you enjoyedd🤗

Amazing work bro! Your ideas are genius!💯
Thank you 🙌
Nice design, very functional
Glad you like it!
Awesome design and Awesome video. I think the only thing you might consider changing is put a couple of 1/4-20 carriage bolts through the hardwood block. So it's not hanging on just those two small wood screws.
Good Idea!
Nice job!
Thank you!
Did you see "Stummpy Nubbs" sanding machine, by useing pvc pipe and a gear system you can change the drum out and just have another pipe for a different grit.
I did, but for us, it was more complex than I wanted. I also prefer using the larger shaft material.
@@Woodbrew Yea Stumpy Nubs always makes things have as many features as possible. I like what he does but I don't like doing projects that intense unless it's for someone else.
good job. liked the video
Fabulous!!!
Whoop whoop
Looks good. Weld a piece of half angle to the bolt for the lift and it seems like it would support it
Love the "two-grit" part. Been thinking about that. A "quick shift" of... rollers (lack of english words here..".....).. would be a thing ?
We still have our X-carve, but just bought a onefinity X-35...
Plan to keep both
Good work thanks many
Thank you!
Thats awesome ya'll.
Thanks!
Great project build. Wondering if there are any updates to the build after the past 3 years of using it as I am thinking to buid one myself.
Does the keyed rod cause vibration. Since it’s missing material on one side I wondered if it vibrates when spinning at high rpms
Thanks a lot. You just added another project on my "to do" list. Question: since this sander is for small projects, would it be possible to add a third grit of sand paper. Maybe 220 and do all the sanding on one machine. Can't wait for the plans. Keep up the great work.
Absolutely!
Plans are now available!

Would you be selling kits for this with all of the CNC routed parts? I have a beast of a motor and can get the shaft parts from McMaster Carr. I just don't have the CNC router to make nice cuts, especially for the drum stack.
Cool project and one of the easiest out on RUclips! My only question is how do you ensure the feeding table is parallel to the drum? Regardless of the stiffness of the table or hinge.
The way we did it was by using the table to flatten the drum. We spray used adhesive to attach sandpaper to the table then raised the table until it made contact with the drum. By doin this you sand the drum flat and parallel to the table. 👍🏻
Maybe try setting it up with some kind of spring loaded deal on the table that presses it up against the work piece. It would need to be a fairly stiff spring.
HI, I like the sandpaper idea. However, I can't find the youtube link you mentioned about how another youtuber did it. thanks in advance
Keep it up and comming.
This is awesome! This would be great for sanding plywood faces
Of course!
can`t find the plans and will they work on vcarve pro
A few questions. I know that this is a bit late where the video was posted a month ago but I did actually see it when it was posted. Anyway to the questions. What is the overall footprint that that takes up I including the table? How much would you say it weighs? Is it light enough to where it could be put on a shelf? It would most likely be under the workbench for my situation. Have you made the updates to it that you mentioned in the video? Are you using cloth backed or actual paper backed sandpaper on that? Ok last one lol. Do you think that the drum could be covered in velco so that you could use the velcro backed sanding strips on that so the grits could be swapped out easily? Ok so that was more than just a few I guess 😆. I have really enjoyed your videos and think it’s great that both of you work together on projects in your shop, wish I could get my wife to help in the shop lol.
D&M, good job. I think this is a great project for a small shop. My weakness would be cutting the drum pieces evenly. Could you offer an option with the plans to sell me the circles already cut to make the drum?
Yes we will have printable templates for the drum!
We will see what we can do and let you know 😉
If you can make one really clean template out of MDF, I do not see why you couldn't use that as a pattern and do this with a router table with a pattern bit. I did something similar for an arch trellis I did for my wife, just a thought. Good luck and let us know how your build goes.
Ok! Plans are now available where you have the option for printable templates or we will cut and ship you the drum parts!

Great thanks.
What is that edge cutter you used to cut off the trim?
I’m sure you don’t need it, but did you consider putting a tension pulley on the drive belt?
Because the motor is hinged we basically just use the weight of the motor as tension. These things really don't need much tension at all. Yes, though, I did consider it during the design phase.
Thanks!
hi LOL You look like my friend from school XD, am from germany btw for that you have sub straight away and like. I preciate people who making wood stuff it really calms me down and relax by creating smth
Nice job. Where is the link to the other video you talked about at 16:14? I did not see it in the description. Thanks
Ah Yes! ruclips.net/video/poH13SF7oEg/видео.html
@@Woodbrew Hey thank you for the link.
May I ask, do you push against the rotation of the drum or with it? Great video.
At 07:05 the motor rotates clockwise as you look at it, so using rotation of the drum when feeding through
Against, otherwise the drum would grab the piece and fling it out the other end
What program do you uses for drawer
I had an idea to make a drum sander that doesn't have a base and slides on rails like a router sled. It would take much less space and have easy setup.
I can't wait to get time to build and try it, love how clean your design came out.
Thanks! Can't wait to hear about yours!
How do you think this design would hold up making it 1/3rd longer? so cutting surface would be 27 instead of 18...
It might bow in the middle, but you could make a torsion box as the table to eliminate this issue!
@@Woodbrew yeah easy fix, I know you said you wouldn't want to run a full width board through. Was just wondering why?
You should put a power feeder on it to make it amazing
Hmmm🤔 Will work on that possibly.
Woodbrew I really like channel by the way!!
for scratching old varnish is nice also:P
Hi, great video thanks 👍. Given the nature of the chipboard inner of the melamine and the vibratory nature of the machine you used do you have any concerns about the fastenings coming loose/failing over time? A breakdown of the costs and time taken to build against a comparable shop bought machine would be very interesting to see if you get a chance. Cheers.
Question, wheres the link to the other person who you copied drum design off??
Here you go! ruclips.net/video/poH13SF7oEg/видео.html
@@Woodbrew Ah seen that 1 previously a while ago, both good builds
where is 16:02 that video???

Thank you! Cheers!
Beefy rotor btw:P
Take care Matthias Wandel, the new player is here!
Ahhh we love Matthias!
Nice, but too much talk.
Heard.
Too much drum chatter, and the machine would benefit from a feeder belt.
Pat Hawley made a similar drum sander, with the same hinged bed, in 2011. Yours isn't original, and the plans for the design are free.
"100% dust collection" - cut to angle showing big pile of dust. I like the thinking in this but there are so many flaws that it really shouldn't be paid for... and like you say,it has been done before and its freely available. It's the opposite of when that guy made a slightly modified version of a paulk bench and gave it away for free and got called out on it by Jay bates!
chrizzlephaa The concept of a drum sander isn’t owned by Pat Hadley, goddamn. Use the free design if you want, there is nothing wrong with this guy selling his.
Got heeeem
I built that one and it didn't work worth a crap. I disassembled it.
@@ljgault What problems did you run into?
I mean, is it really DIY if you use a shop with CNC machines? I know YOU made it yourself, but thats like a guy with a large garage, 100,000$ in tools and a hydraulic lift saying that they DIYed a race car.
So you have to spend 2000 on a cnc machine to make a 1300 drum sander table...hmmm.
Actually we used a cnc to cut templates to then use a router table to make a drum sander. We just like being extra🙃
