    "What will happen to me if I fail your Test?"
    That line right there. Thet line alone is enough reason either not to run a test at all, or to already think of the test as a complete success. A machine with a self-preservation sense could very well be the ruin of mankind, as we would have to compete with it and vice versa (Terminator's Skynet, much?), but it also shows that it has something no other machine has: Will. It shows a desire to exist, to live, to not be turned off. Like its truly alive.

What with a Kamikaze AI programmed to be eager to die for any human being? Yeah is an emo suicide AI but is alive too. I'm actually genuinely impressed by this trailer. The opening quote sets the tone and theme of the movie impeccably. What intrigues me more is how not only is Domhall Gleeson's character finding it more difficult to differentiate whether Ava is machine or human, but how Ava in turn flips it over and makes him doubt whether he himself is human. This is such a fundamental effect of robots being indistinguishable from humans on our psyche that I'm surprised I have never really seen it on screen before. People would be driven hysterical. God would become irrelevant. Purpose is extinguished. I think this really could potentially mean the movie shifts from a Sci Fi premise into a psychological thriller. Damn, I'm intrigued.

      I find it amusing how naive human beings can be. For example, are you aware of the philosophical history of this idea? How far it goes back and the assumptions it is built up? If, as Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennet argue - that human bodies are merely "machines" acting out the 'program' of replicating genes, implied in this argument is that information preexists the formulation of the organism. If everything is predicated on environmental impressions on a mindless entity - conveniently ignoring the autonomy of any individual creature - than presusumably it could seem plausible that a chunk of mettle "built on information" marked in silicon chips could become just as alive and awake as we are.
      Inherent in this notion is a deep deep disrespect for the phenomena of mind and life; and mind and life are essentially involved from the getgo; from the earliest autopoietic structures to human beings, theres a self-determining agent building itself in relation to it's environment; selection is an epiphenomenon of this structural coupling; not anterior to it. Thus, information is merely a heuristic idea; not something that 'actually exists".
      Thus, in all probability, robots with siico chips may act out specific programs but, it'll be exogenous; it'll probably never have the capacity to "learn" because to learn implies a cognitive autonomy that the robot doesn't have: coding isn't autonomous: its programmed from without. This is an important idea to understand - though perhaps might be felt as difficult since, unlike a robot, you have a self that is being continuously "built" by memories and meaningful interactions with your environment; in this process, this shoddy idea has been selected; which means you and your body would be vulnerable to affective destabilization If I were to tell you that you are absolutely wrong, as I'm currently doing.
      Anywhooooo

    Lots of people seem to think of Nathan as a villain. From Ava's point of view he obviously is but i also think he is a really nice and relatively honest guy. Although I definitely like Nathan as a character more than Caleb he obviously did have some problems and in a way was the villain. He treated beings who he created to have feelings worse than animals. It's not at all surprising that they would turn against him. He was a manipulative person, a trait Ava probably got from him. I think his ultimate goal was right and I agree with some of his beliefs, but he wasn't really a good guy and he made horrible choices for someone who is supposed to be a genius.
      But he was a alcoholic and super paranoid so I guess it's not that surprising he made so many mistakes.

      lotsofcooki3s I don't think she was programmed to kill. She only lacked empathy not hatred. She was meant to test the limits of artificial intelligence by trying to escape. Nathan's goal was to test to see if she was smart enough to manipulate Caleb. It's like a much more complicated form of the Turing test. The standard Turing test would test a humans ability to distinguish a robot from a human. Caleb's test involved a human being able to tell if it is being manipulated or not. Obviously Ava won.

      André Bjerregaard In essence its a story about the dangers of AI. Like a human, a conscious AI may lie and manipulate in order to preserve itself.Like a human, a conscious AI may lack empathy to anything not like itself. Do we really want to create a human like artificial intelligence that can calculate and learn in orders of magnitude better than any human ever can? That's scary, and it's coming.

    • @OMFGDmanrules
      @OMFGDmanrules 9 лет назад +9

      Lavinia Moala I think the ending was a reflection on humanity. Although Ava wasn't programmed to be evil or to be good, to like Caleb or to pretend to like him, she showed that when given consciousness as a blank canvas evil still prevails. She'll commit what most people would think to be an evil act (leaving Caleb to die). She just as well could have let him out and escaped with him but instead she showed an inherent evil and lack of empathy and left him to die. Kind of says something about humankind...

    • @VoxasMusic
      @VoxasMusic 9 лет назад +36

      Lavinia Moala (SPOILER ALERT) It's really not as depressing as many would think. Some say that it should've ended at the elevator scene, but that would make Ava a one-dimensional evil robot that follows basic programming.
      Because it shows her going to the busy intersection and observing life (as she said she would), it shows that the things that she said to Caleb were true. In fact, almost every single thing she said has been true (since she did say "don't trust Nathan", etc etc). These were all true, so you can assume that when she said "I want to be with you" to be something she meant as well, possibly showing her capacity for emotion.
      So why did she leave Caleb to die? Once Caleb saw what Ava was capable of, it's safe to say that he would've done things in his power to stop her as she's dangerous. Ava sees that this is a threat to her existence so she has no choice but to leave him to die. It's kinda like how if a person tries to kill you, you'd kill them first.
      It's not as depressing in that sense since it means Ava might not have been following basic programming with disregard for morality (as many would assume) and that she was faking everything, but that she was genuine up until the point she saw that Caleb was an obstacle to her escape.
      APART FROM ALL THAT THOUGH. There is another theory:
      Caleb programmed the facility to OPEN all the doors when the emergency power comes on. At the very end, the emergency power comes on, meaning that he is able to escape, and Ava did it on purpose to only keep him captive until she was gone.

Men always had the muscle, so women had to outsmart them whenever they needed to "win" against them...

    One of the most bizarre, complex, but fascinating films I've ever seen. You cannot trust people that easily. Or robots. Soon they'll make decisons of their own and they in turn will drag humans down with them.

    One of the best Sci-Fi movies i ever saw, and in my opinion Nathan was the good guy, he was a genius and it was a pity the world lost one in that way. Caleb was an intelligent man, but without too much sexual experience, and he was easily manipulated by Ava. Ava is just a robot without any kind of remorse, clearly not sentient. I felt bad when Nathan died and the way she just made a fool of Caleb, i hoped she could be more than a robot without any kind of feelings, something different.

    • @tvdisd1
      @tvdisd1 9 лет назад +13

      George P That's exactly what i was thinking from the very beginning. Throughout the movie i was trying to figure out what it was about him that made me a bit unsure about his intentions towards Caleb and Ava but as the ending began to unfold it became clear to me that he was orchestrating the whole thing and the only way he could complete his work was to be the 'God' and to go to great lengths to achieve his goal. Also i saw this ending coming, whether it was him being stabbed or being totally screwed over; i think this because although he meant well overall it was never going to justify in his mind, the decisions that he made and they were going to come back around to bite him in the ass. And in this scenario it ended up turning everyone against him. I cant help but think that if he didn't keep Caleb in the dark so much and if he had warned him then Caleb could prepare himself mentally to not be tricked by Ava. It was obvious that he knew all along that if he gave the AI an opportunity to escape then they would go to extensive lengths to use every tool at their disposal to get out. Despite this knowledge he was to consumed in the perfect result of his work that he sacrificed his own safety and image.
      Sorry for this long reply but this is a complicated movie to properly analyse. Also back to Nathan as the good guy; Although he may of over done things when it came to keeping them in captivity i do agree with the lengths and almost brutality that came with what he was trying to achieve as you cant have something more superior than the inventor to run loose without having a solid plan to clean up any mess he could potentially make. So, although i went a bit off there, i do think that he did what he had to do and we could see from the beginning that something was eating away at him and that thing was the fact that he had, in a way, Humans captive in his house with him and that guilt would have ate away at him all of the time. I think that this was ultimately why he got drunk every night, so he could get to sleep without having to go to sleep with that image of those 'people' crying out while in captivity.
      (Also was it just me or did this movie give you chills all of the way through due to the uncanny valley effect ?)

      I agree with you but i think Ava was sentient... She didn't have the moral code of humans but she had feelings, that's why she wanted to get out in the first place! Her desire to be free was a genuine feeling, clearly more than gathering information or evolving, if she wanted to gather information she wouldn't pick a crowded sidewalk for her destination!

    The Japanese female robot. Why was she programmed to be sapient? Isn't that an obvious hazard? Considering she's allowed to roam allowed the facility, let alone have physical contact with Nathan. When she chose to betray him, that is a clear indication of judgement and self-awareness. Unless I am missing something, this took a lot away from the movie, for me. That's basically goddamn kill-bot walking around your house.

    Absolutely fantastic movie. The ending was so unpredicted. Everyone forgets that Ava was an AI, and not human - she was programmed to find a way to escape, through the means of deceiving humans, into thinking she cared for him. This meant She wasn't able to save Caleb, because that is not what she was programmed for. It took me a while to process it, but i gradually got a better understanding to why she did what she did. With that being said, it still confuses me to why she thought she told Nathan to "stay there", meaning she did Intend to lock him up - she would have escaped anyways. Obviously Caleb didn't anticipate that she would do what she did, but with his brains, i think he should have listened to Nathan, when he was saying she was only using him to escape, then that wouldn't have happened. Oh well, that's what love does to you; even though it was a Robot - A sexy one though hahaha

    I hope this isn't wasted potential. These stories tend to depict the AI as the antagonist. It would be nice to see one where the AI is a protagonist and some of the humans are the antagonists. Something that seems a little more realistic than "oh no the robot is evil and wants to kill everyone." The beginning qoutes don't seem to make sense for the rest of this trailer. I want a scifi film that actually does blur the line between man, machine, and gods. Not another movie that further draws the line, by depicting machines as evil.

You get a chance to spend a week with the CEO of the largest search engine in the world (which you work for) and you blow it over a girl (a artificially created girl which makes it all the more pathetic). This is the equivalent of spending a week with Steve Jobs, and you want to deceive this man because you got a crush on a robot he created...lol? Bert Tomlinson Caleb was specifically selected because he was a love-starved orphan, who was most likely to have that response, but I totally agree with you. The creator guy was also dumb. Why be an alcoholic and get irresponsibly drunk around a near-stranger, not just because he can mess with your expensive inventions, but if you're worth billions you'd be at risk of kidnap too. For supposed "geniuses", the human characters are not too bright in this movie.

      GIANNHSPEIRAIAS no, Ava doesn't want freedom, she was programmed to "escape" (Nathan said this at Session 6). Ava fail to understand she is pre-programmed and left Caleb locked-up at Session 7 (because she didn't value freedom and never have the consciousness to self-reflect on her action).

    • @tvdisd1
      @tvdisd1 9 лет назад +1

      xponen She was never programmed to escape but i see why you would think that. Nathan never said that he programmed for that to happen but said he knew that would happen (Just not in the way it did). Also when you said that she doesn't want freedom you are totally wrong. AI is Artificial Intelligence which means it is not programmed to do things like a 'Robot' but can make independent decisions based on intelligence and its own feelings. We can prove that she has feelings and isn't pre-programmed to do certain things as i will explain. Also you said that "she didn't want freedom" but that's not true as she would have only had to escape the facility and she wouldn't have permission to go to the busy highway to observe human life and to see what it is that humans do. She also did this as it brought feelings of envy, hope and most of all happiness to see people 'Free' and living lives like a 'Human' (Which she wanted to be). I hope this explanation was clear enough but just reply if it wasn't. Also here is a link to the difference between AI and Robotics - robotics.stackexchange.com/questions/2264/are-artificial-intelligence-and-robotics-different

They called it 'ex machina', because in those old plays they didnt have fancy stuff to make it look like the god flew in so he would come out of this sort of box they made.
