We travel with barefoot shoes and sandals and use them for everything from city walking to our toughest hikes. With that said, this trail is unfortunately closed due to the erosion of the cliffside. 😕

Oh my god, you didn't finish it. I am going to cry. The last bit of the trail is by far the most amazing. I understand the clouds ruined the moment... but oh my gosh I hate for you that you didn't finish the out hike!

I heard locals shot there guns at goats and hit someone that’s why it’s closed. super tragic but the person was okay. Be careful and have fun!

There’s a difference between being scared of heights and being scared of falling off a cliff because you’re walking along a narrow ledge. 🙄

The trail officially doesn't exist and hasn't been open for a long time. There is no official trail head to the Kalepa Ridge as it is closed. Disrespecting the rules is akin to trespassing. Just go one mile up the road to the Pihea Trail.

Thank you for your comment. We understand now the trail is closed and have added a disclaimer in our description to inform others to not take this trail.

So irresponsible for you to encourage people to “discover” (in the most western sense of the term) a trail that is closed for a reason, as our resources and residents are the ones that have to respond to emergencies in places where visitors should not be, but you do not care because you already left the island and just want the views. Please expand your colonizing discovery selfishness. Aloha.

So sorry if we missed a sign and took a trail that was closed. Many guides point to this trail for its amazing views and we followed instructions to never take the trail unless it is dry. We would never encourage people to "discover" anything that is off a marked route or put themselves in danger. It is completely untrue to say we do not care about these parks, their preservation and the people who work there. I would be happy to explain in our description that this trail is closed

@@SOSASATSUNRISE I appreciate your response and enjoy your content. Please understand that Hawaii has a long and complicated history. The trail is closed, the fence extension was placed in the past 15 years to remove visitor access due to abuse, and too many accidents. There is a clear sign as you walked around looking for the fence to end, take the hike, but to publish and encourage the “look at me too” generation is really inconsiderate. Locals use trails and shorelines for sustenance hunting too and do not need those places to be inundated with visitors. The worst thing that happened to the islands was the publishing of “The Ultimate ___ Guidebook” with the blue covers by Andy Doughty that everyone reads and believes is true information, along with people who are one time visitors becoming the “real” source of information, over the actual agencies that manage, maintain, monitor, and have to provide emergency services. Kaua’i’s Nā Pali coast is one of the fastest eroding coastlines in the world and for that reason everything is both breathtaking and impermanent. Waterfalls and streams appear and disappear, so do trees, boulders, hill sides, and people who try to access them. It is our family members who have to risk their lives and our ever rising county taxes to retrieve people from places that are clearly marked as off limits, for a reason. Please do not let that be your legacy to our community. Glad you enjoyed Kaua’i please allow us who live here to not feel like we live in a circus 🎪 and have no place to retrieve to from the over exploitation of the economic one trick pony of tourism, for everyone’s experience to be more pleasant. Aloha.

We appreciate you spreading awareness to what is happening to the coastline. We get our information from alltrails which lists this trail as unofficial but not closed. We also aim to make videos to allow others a view of trails before they hike and asses whether they are physically capable of the hike. We were more than capable to make this hike and never put ourselves in danger in any way. best thing we can do is change our description to advise others this trail is closed. We are curious why this coastline is made so accessible to visitors if it causes so much stress on the local communities? Parks are meant to preserve these lands, not allow others to destroy them. Why give visitors the opportunity? As a visitor, would I be disappointed the park was closed? Absolutely, but I would be happy knowing the land was protected and preserved for the future.
