Get a hub that has a power pass through so you can plug in the charger and make sure you plug the capture card into the available USB C port and NOT into the hub! You will be good!

I've got the mac mini 2014 model and the elgato hd60 s+ works great on it. I'm about to officially start streaming on twitch in a week after I fully set up my stream deck. I'll be streaming PS5 content for now and later I'll link up my OLED switch and venture into Nintendo territory.
After getting OBS Studio to run smooth on a 2012 13" base model MacBook Pro I believe almost anyone can stream on their mac! Good luck! Stream Metroid Dread!

Got it working… my issues were that the OWC Dock doesn’t work with any capture cards… so I had to plug my Elgato Camlink 4K & Live gamer ultra into the Mac directly…. Wasted $280 on the dock.

This is a really good question! So USB 3 capture cards will have wayyyy less latency if you are going to be playing off your OBS preview screen. But if you are hooking up an external display then get the live gamer mini alllll day! Thanks for watching my video!
Dayum. Now I wish I would’ve bought the HD60S+. I have the HD60S & have to use the game capture screen to stream in real time with no lag. Sucks cause if you move your mouse, the fullscreen goes away and ruins the experience for those watching. Will be investing. Thanks for all the tips too. Quite helpful when I’ve been streaming at such a low bitrate on 1gb internet LOL. Oops.
This is such a great video - I love your videos for quick answers on all things streaming. A couple questions, sorry if these have been asked and answered already: 1. I plan on getting the Elgato HD60S+ to stream Nintendo Switch games to with my Macbook Pro. I can't find a definitive answer if this will work - I see a lot of reference to PS4 and Xbox but just wanted to make sure it would actually be compatible before dropping the cash. 2. I only have USBC ports on my Macbook Pro - you mentioned using a USB hub for all other USB accessories other than the capture card, do you have a recommendation for a reliable one like you showed in the video? Thanks in advance!
These are great questions! 1) yes it 10000% works with the Nintendo switch! Capture cards work with all modern consoles. The only one that has an issue is the PS3 because there is no way to disable HDCP on a PS3 so you need an HDMI splitter. But for the Switch no problem! 2) if you have a Mac with only 2 USB C ports look up on Amazon “USB C HUB power pass through”. These hubs have a power pass through to plug your AC adapter into and this can be used for your accessories. Then the available USB port should be for the capture card. READ REVIEWS OF THE HUBS! Some of them get VERY VERY HOT! So look out for that. I recommend spending the extra money to get a well built one.
@@FornaTRON thank you so much! Very helpful! I actually have the 4 ports so less worried about taking up port space with the AC adapter and elgato. But i’ll definitely read reviews on the hubs when I look into them. I have one of the adapters from Apple that has usb, usb c, and hdmi.
Super informative! Just switched from Streamlabs to OBS because of this! Finally figured out how to get computer audio into my stream! But how can I listen to the audio as well?
I am thinking about switching back to OBS from streamlabs due to many issues with them. I was having troubles streaming anything at a high enough quality to be acceptable to me mostly because of the ethernet port problem. I went through four different ethernet adapters and was never able to find anything that was reliable enough to keep the stream smooth at high bit rates. I have since switched over to my Mac pro cheese grater which shreds like butter. Cheesy butter. I feel like the best older Mac laptop would be the 2015 because it still had a ethernet port unless someone can clue me in on a good USBC adapter for an ethernet port that doesn’t reduce your speeds.
I literally used an Amazon Basics USB gigabit Ethernet adapter. And yes SLOBS sucks in MacOS that’s why I say don’t use it and use OBS Studio. I know that the overlays and features are nice to have bundled in but you can do all the things SLOBS can do but with better reliability. And the last MacBook Pro with an Ethernet port was 2012.

I have an MBP from 2015-2017 era whatever that means, and it's only a dual-core. It works great for making music but I'm probably going to be getting an M1 MBP
That’s awesome! The M1 macs are INSANE!! I just got a M1 Mac mini and it’s amazing for streaming and content creation! I also do some audio recording with Logic Pro X. It all works great!

Maybe just an external monitor and a couple cables and an affordable hub. I already have the HD60S+, a couple of gaming systems, OBS, and all my music gear too.
Would purchasing an external camera lessen the CPU usage on my MacBook Pro? I use the internal camera but play on a monitor adjacent so was wondering if it would. It’d be nice to look (somewhat) directly at the camera as I play but if it doesn’t make any difference I can forgo it 😊 Your video was incredibly helpful as well. Thank you so much!
I don’t think it will have a big impact on your CPU% but yea I 100% agree it’s so much easier to stream and connect with your audience when you can LOOK at the camera! Get a webcam or DSLR setup (if you can)

Got it working… my issues were that the OWC Dock doesn’t work with any capture cards… so I had to plug my Elgato Camlink 4K & Live gamer ultra into the Mac directly…. Wasted $280 on the dock.

This is a really good question! So USB 3 capture cards will have wayyyy less latency if you are going to be playing off your OBS preview screen. But if you are hooking up an external display then get the live gamer mini alllll day! Thanks for watching my video!
Dayum. Now I wish I would’ve bought the HD60S+. I have the HD60S & have to use the game capture screen to stream in real time with no lag. Sucks cause if you move your mouse, the fullscreen goes away and ruins the experience for those watching. Will be investing. Thanks for all the tips too. Quite helpful when I’ve been streaming at such a low bitrate on 1gb internet LOL. Oops.

This is such a great video - I love your videos for quick answers on all things streaming. A couple questions, sorry if these have been asked and answered already:
1. I plan on getting the Elgato HD60S+ to stream Nintendo Switch games to with my Macbook Pro. I can't find a definitive answer if this will work - I see a lot of reference to PS4 and Xbox but just wanted to make sure it would actually be compatible before dropping the cash.
2. I only have USBC ports on my Macbook Pro - you mentioned using a USB hub for all other USB accessories other than the capture card, do you have a recommendation for a reliable one like you showed in the video?

These are great questions!
1) yes it 10000% works with the Nintendo switch! Capture cards work with all modern consoles. The only one that has an issue is the PS3 because there is no way to disable HDCP on a PS3 so you need an HDMI splitter. But for the Switch no problem!
2) if you have a Mac with only 2 USB C ports look up on Amazon “USB C HUB power pass through”. These hubs have a power pass through to plug your AC adapter into and this can be used for your accessories. Then the available USB port should be for the capture card. READ REVIEWS OF THE HUBS! Some of them get VERY VERY HOT! So look out for that. I recommend spending the extra money to get a well built one.
@@FornaTRON thank you so much! Very helpful! I actually have the 4 ports so less worried about taking up port space with the AC adapter and elgato. But i’ll definitely read reviews on the hubs when I look into them. I have one of the adapters from Apple that has usb, usb c, and hdmi.
Get a powered hub that uses an AC adapter. And that AV adapter is good for external HDMI displays.

I am thinking about switching back to OBS from streamlabs due to many issues with them. I was having troubles streaming anything at a high enough quality to be acceptable to me mostly because of the ethernet port problem. I went through four different ethernet adapters and was never able to find anything that was reliable enough to keep the stream smooth at high bit rates. I have since switched over to my Mac pro cheese grater which shreds like butter. Cheesy butter.
I feel like the best older Mac laptop would be the 2015 because it still had a ethernet port unless someone can clue me in on a good USBC adapter for an ethernet port that doesn’t reduce your speeds.
I literally used an Amazon Basics USB gigabit Ethernet adapter. I had to download the driver from a website but it worked perfect with my 2019 16” MacBook Pro.

And yes SLOBS sucks in MacOS that’s why I say don’t use it and use OBS Studio. I know that the overlays and features are nice to have bundled in but you can do all the things SLOBS can do but with better reliability.
And the last MacBook Pro with an Ethernet port was 2012.

I have an MBP from 2015-2017 era whatever that means, and it's only a dual-core. It works great for making music but I'm probably going to be getting an M1 MBP
That’s awesome! The M1 macs are INSANE!! I just got a M1 Mac mini and it’s amazing for streaming and content creation! I also do some audio recording with Logic Pro X. It all works great!

Maybe just an external monitor and a couple cables and an affordable hub. I already have the HD60S+, a couple of gaming systems, OBS, and all my music gear too.

Would purchasing an external camera lessen the CPU usage on my MacBook Pro? I use the internal camera but play on a monitor adjacent so was wondering if it would.
It’d be nice to look (somewhat) directly at the camera as I play but if it doesn’t make any difference I can forgo it 😊

I don’t think it will have a big impact on your CPU% but yea I 100% agree it’s so much easier to stream and connect with your audience when you can LOOK at the camera! Get a webcam or DSLR setup (if you can)
