Lee loves this car! Like I said I prepped about 5 of these brand new in the summer of 1979 for delivery at the Chevy dealer I worked at.
I would keep it white and the gold will look great. As you mentioned there were other stripe colors you could choose. But what is going to screw you up is the fact that the interior is gold. So if you keep it gold, will a maroon or silver stripe look OK with the gold interior?
A couple I prepped for delivery may have been SS models, but I know one was a green Conquistador model. And there was one gold Conquistador too.
These were not bad looking cars, but most of them were limp wristed with V6 engines (that I saw). At least this one has a 140 hp 305.
Definitely want to find a donor car for the tail gate and trim and possibly interior door panels. It would be a fair amount of work to change the interior color.
We will be watching the build! 😅

I also worked at a dealer in '78. Bought a black/gold SS 350 4-speed. Loved that car, drove it until the rust killed the frame in the late 90's.

It is a beautiful truck. I always liked the 78- 86 El Camino, Chevelle , Monte Carlo I know they were not all available for all those years). I have a 73 Chevelle here on Long Island and I agree about rust in the North East. Looking forward to the progress on the El Camino. Great job on the Chevelle, Novas, Aspen, and Nomad. The rear wheels look like they are original to the vehicle . The fronts look like Cutlass rims.

I know you're going to make this Ol' gal beautiful again. As far as putting another engine in, I don't know. It depends on what you find after you remove the valve covers and see what you can see. If the numbers are matching, I would leave it in. Being a 78 I think most people would prefer original over speed. Like you said you can always do a few things to perk her up a bit. Just my two cents but I would leave it white and gold. I'm looking forward to seeing you getting started on it.

Pinch welds are OK in southern states my brother comes down south to get cars because they are not rotted away!! So glad you are trying to save original upholstery charcoal sounds good for lower stripe and wheel color with Silver top color but tan interior or "BUCKSKIN" won't match unless you go with a whitish looking silver !! I know that White and Gold isn't exciting. Although I would probably go original as it goes with the interior.
Honest Charley has the SS front end which would be cool except it's $2600.
I know guys in the 80's would put bigger cams in those 305's, and get decent power out of it. It sounds like it needs lifters etc. anyway. I don't think you will get 50 to 60 Hp out of exhaust on a 305. I think you need a cam for that.

Back in the day general motors use that dashboard in a lots of cars, a Buick century, regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevrolet Malibu ECT. You may be able to find a replacement dash. You could get some stencil paper, an outline those logos and paint them all to save money. You might run some Marvin's mystery oil through that motor and get rid of that tappan. Just a few ideas. God bless

That was a damn good deal on that El Camino..I like that your going to redo the car mostly stock like the wheels etc..those seats are a nice design and redone will bring more value to the car, costly but they make the interior of the car, junkyard seats would kill it, I think...
As for the color I am torn between keeping it original even the stripes,I guess if it was my car I would do lots of research on it,maybe a El Camino forum and get more info? I don't know just talking out loud..Maybe a color change will bring more money? Better color stripe kit? Anyways I will sit back and see the direction you take it..

  • @lonnymay3997

Try to grab the bottom of the column and turn it counter clockwise to get the key to turn back. The floor shift cars still have a rod that runs up the the column just like column shift cars. If its gone or out of adjustment and the column isnt turning all the way (like its in park) the key wont turn back.
