Hi there! Could you please shoot à video about the installation of your gennaker? I’m about to but one for my HC17 and begin to think about thé installation! Thanks for your advice!! Best regards, nicolas
Hi nicareti, i can give you some advice, but the dimensions are metric. I have six meter aluminum tube black anodized 40 mm diameter wall thickness = 2.5 mm purchased. This is a standard length in Germany. If you are in a situation to buy a length of 3.6 meters that is enough. And the black anodized is for the optic ;-) and had nothing to do with the durability. The Items numbers are European. if you use Google you can find some pictures or can order them ware ever you live. For the connection to the beam you can use the normal Tiller connector item number HC 99501310. For the ends of the boom you need Caps. Item number HC 99220202.The part you have to install at the Beam under mast foot is Item number HC 16056025. Here is a link to an items list of a Hobie FX one where you can see the place you have to install the part. www.catawest.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/fxone.pdf. For all connections you have to use stainless steel pop rivets. If you sail in the salt water you should use under all parts tape. So you have less trouble with electrolysis. Spi Snuffer GFK Ring Item number HC 99267755. Nacra is cheaper ;-). I try to film a little tutorial it look at my Hobie 17 and how at look at a Fx one because I can´t explain it. It will take a view weeks because I spend my Holydays jet. Between our boots there is a little different. I use a Sidebar. Page 15 in the list below. You are using a normal Bridle. Great video, because of your earlier video I also changed my Hobie 17 SE catamaran with a Hobie 16 spinakker. But yours looks smaller is that really the case? Now I have bought a genakker (a little bit smaller than the spinakker) for next year, (2017) because I like to sail often on 70 or 90 degrese course. Where are you sailling i am sailing In the Netherlands near Almere/Amsterdam Markenmeer. Thank you for the aswers and greatings Peter Jansen
Hi Peter, the boat lies her www.wvsd.de/. A Sailor from the US asks me about some parts I´m using for my boat. The list and some photos are her available plus.google.com/u/0/collection/0jT2gB. The orange spi is about 15.4 m². And has a warst shape. It works quit well on a 16ten but not on a HC17. I bought a new one from a nacra sailmaker Sven Lindstädt. That one has a much better shap (cut like a FXone) and 17 m². It has much more parts as a normal FXone spinnaker and the color is light grey. In the next video i will use this one. It works much better and the boat is normal one knot faster. I´ll use the bigger one for regattas. Some times i´d like to sail with out the Wings because the boat is easier to sail in middle winds under 4 Beaufort. If i wont to sail close to the wind over 4 beaufort i have to use the wings. Normally i would sail without the wings because i can choose a deeper course on regatta. :-) And the wing dos´t stop in the water. What do you think Peter? The name is Olli ;-)
Hallo Olli, nice to have contact through youtube. I agree that with 4 boufort the winds give drag, but I need them because I bought the Cat because of the wings. I have lost my right leg and the wings makes it possible to sail again on a good level. (bought the cat in 1985 and sailed till 1991 and started again 2014, in between renting during the holidays, but from 2014 I cannot live without my old catamaran) I have a special wooden frame to put it one above the water (the beach is to hard for one leg person). Hobiecat Holland Johan van Kooten in Noordwijk build the spinakker system on it for my during last winter based on your 2015 video. But I made a mistake regarding the max. wind direction the HC 17 with an spinakker could reach. Halfwind (only with light wether). So I bould a second hand genakker and made it reddy for a snuffer bag. The size is 40 cm. smaller in heigh than the standard Hobie 16 spinakker and a lot flatter in cut. If this dousnot work I am asking an sailmaker to make a code 0 in spinakker stijle (to use in the snuffer bag) because the spinakker boom is not strong enough to carry the normal code 0 I think. Because of the type HC 17 I bought a second one for the spare parts. Regarta's I saild in the eighty's but now making trips or 3 or 4 hours is more than enough, the speed and the dangergive my a rush. My emai is info@internetmatching.nl Peter Jansen
Hi, Great video! :-) I have a couple of questions - I've got a 17 which I have recently updated the sails on (Forward Sailing main & Jib ( www.forward-sailing.com/en/hobie-cat-17-77 )). I have a H16 Spinnaker, pole and ancillaries for her, but my boat has a Comp-Tip Mast. Is it possible to put the halyard onto the mast above the hounds (on the composite part) without causing damage to it? How high do I put the halyard block on the mast. Thanks and happy sailing :-)
Hello Peter, I would recommend you to take the Hobie 14 mast fitting (as you can see her www.houseofsailing.de/mastbeschlag-hobie-14.html) and fix this with four rivets. Please do not use all holes. Four are enough. The holes you choose, should be the one with the most distant. So the force absorption should be the most tolerable for the mast and the material. To determine the correct height for the fitting you should measure your luff. Drop the catamaran on land and then from the top of the spinnaker tree to the point where the gennaker would touch the mast plus 60 cm. Here I would grow the fitting. In my boat I have this point almost at the mast top. You can not do that with a Comp-Tip mast, as it rejuvenates at the top. I put a couple of photos on my side. Here is the link plus.google.com/collection/ckuzsB. On the last photo you can see a small line between the second and the third batten. This is an aramite rope. 6mm diameter. You can not build this at your mast. Here, the pulling force of the gennaker is turned upwards. So I get a better power consumption for the mast and it is not so heavily loaded. I have found a pretty good drawing in an old Hobie tiger guide (link is here static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/tiger-201611.pdf) page 11 points 5-7. Here you can see the principle. Look at other Catamarans to see if you can recognize. In the early nineties, we installed a V4A bracket at this point on the mast. Unfortunately, I have not found this on any drawing. Here you need the inventor spirit. If you have any questions please call me +49 40 212633. My English is really not the best. with friendly greetings
Thanks for your quick reply. I am aiming to get the Hobie on the water, complete with kite sometime early in the summer. I have a Hobie 14 tang and will try to install this and see how it goes. Right now I am half way through restoring an old Reg White Tornado :-) I'll keep you posted on progress on both. Best regards, and fair winds. Pete
As soon as I get some time to do this, I'll send photos and post sailing videos (just search for my name on RUclips) and will let you know. Regards, Peter.
