    Storytime:
    My first time working for lessons, my trainer had all the horses in the arena. At the time, I'd only ridden 2/5, and didn't know any of them super well. In addition to the horses, there was a Shetland colt (maybe 6 months) and his mom.
    She left me alone with all of them for a few minutes.
    Obviously, I went for the colt first. He was so little and cute I thought he was smelling my pockets for treats, and accidentally nibbled me. When my trainer came back, she asked, "Has Derby tried to bite you yet?"
    "So that's what he's doing!" I replied, then explained my assumption.
    "Nope. Ponies are evil. Closer to the ground, closer to-"
    A few weeks later, the same pony kept taking the reins from me when I was riding in a pasture.
    My sisters think they're adorable (which they 110% are, no disputing that), saying, "I love ponies!!"
    I keep responding with, "You wouldn't think so if you spent some time with them!"

    As someone with an Icelandic, I must say that the spooking part is, in my experience, completely the contrary. Most horses run away, completely losing their head, while my Icelandic flinches, takes a look, thinks "Oh! Okay, won't eat me, let's just carry on" and that's it. Only thing that truly scares him is fire. Okay, and drones. And...he does have a VERY good, comfortable trot - all it took was good training.

    • @valeriebreidenstein8362
      @valeriebreidenstein8362 3 года назад +3

      It's the same with our ponies (two Haflinger Horses) and my own horse (Shagya Arabian). The Haflinger horses just flinch and stay calm, my Arabian mare prances, sometimes she jumps to the side. Luckily she doesn't run away. I don't know if I could parry her through.

    • @GraupeLie
      @GraupeLie 3 года назад +6

      @@valeriebreidenstein8362 Haha, right? My Icelandic is pretty hard to shock, but I guess it's natural selection, really. If a horse runs off somewhere in the steppe, that's okay, but if an Icelandic loses its head, it'll end up in the next crevasse in some glacier and die. Probably similar for Haflingers, they come from the Alps, after all...

    So my two quarter horse mares are 14 hands, Jasmine is 14.2 and Star is 14.7. And yeah they aren’t ponies but you can duck under things because of how little they are. While with Gunner, my 16.0 hand Appendix gelding, your much taller 😂

    Hey! I just found your channel about a week ago, I love your training style videos. I have a horse focused youtube channel and I was wondering if you had any tips on how I could get my channel growing. 🙂

    I have a 16’2 gelding, and he feels like he’s 13’2 instead cause I’ve fallen off of him so many times ✌🏻😗
