I'm a big believer in "it depends on the horse" - one of mine grows a very fine, very downy winter coat that doesn't hold heat well and the other horse won't let him come into the run in. He gets a sheet at 40F and an actual blanket once it gets below about 34. The other is an absolute woolly mammoth. He gets a sheet if it's raining, and a blanket once it drops below 25 or so (we live in the south, so that's the temps my horses are acclimated to. For them, if it drops down into the teens, that's *really really cold*. They're also both getting up there in age, the wuss is 19 and the fluffy one is 26ish).
The only real answer is that you need to adjust to your individual horse’s needs. You’re totally right. People sometimes forget that animals are just as diverse as humans.
We don’t normally blanket, our younger ones they grow a nice winter coat hold wait nice to the winter and keep their bodies warm but our older ones we blanket they drop way easy don’t get that nice winter coat it really just depends on the horse exactly what you said

When my family got our first horse, we were shocked by the strong and conflicting opinions from various communities in the horse world! 😅 Many years later when we had figured things out and both we and the horses were comfortable with our routines, we had a Karen come pounding on the door yelling at us that she would report us for "blindfolding" our horses during a particularly buggy summer. I'm not sure she ever fully grasped the concept of a fly mask... But thankfully she calmed down when we showed her that you can definitely see through them! 🤦♀️

If they are cool with it going on them they let me put it on, if not they walk away. It works, they aren't going to die without it :)
I love the approach on discussing blanketing. My personal opinion is that it depends on the horse’s age, breed, and of course the temperature outside. It also depends on whether or not your horse is out to pasture or kept in a stall most of the time. My AQH mare grows a long coat and looks like a big teddy bear right now. Our 32 year old Saddlebred gelding does not get as much of a coat, so we will blanket him if the temperature goes into single digits. The horses have access to the indoor arena for shelter, so that is another factor for us.
"The tripledy dipeldy heavy heavy heavy, and the doubledy doupledy heavy heavy" I definately think that all horses need both of these blankets. Love the video as always😁😂
This was great! I believe in not blanketing horses if they grow a thick winter coat in time for the cold weather. My mare has a nice winter coat and hay 24/7 so I don’t blanket unless it drops to 10 degrees and below. I try to let her naturally produce heat instead of blanketing all winter but some horses need blankets. when it rains a lot I put a rain sheet on but that’s just what works for me and my horse.
I'm a "it depends on the horse and where they live" kind of person. I put sheets on my horses when it rains and then goes below freezing. I put winter blankets on them when it gets into the -20's. They're sturdy northern horses so they can take the cold with their thick fluffy coats, but I've seen them shiver before and I'm not letting that happen again if I can help it.
Love it so much. Next you need to show how different people care for their horse in general! The pampered horse, the outdoor 24/7 horse, etc. 😂 just an idea :)
I did lots of research and have a winter 150g blanket for my mare. She grows more guard hairs than an actual coat so a blanket was a good option. Since it isn't too heavy its on when its below -10 or -10 with snow or hail. On super cold -40 nights she has extra hay and a warm grain. Especially when we have lots of blowing snow or a blizzard.
Haha sometimes I get this, I don’t blanket anymore since our horses are so thick with fur! But I used to because my first pony had legit no winter coat- it just depends on the horse! 😂 (I do use a show blanket tho) great video!!!
It is freezing cold here in New Jersey today. And I was just thinking if I owned a horse or a couple of horses if I would be blanketing them today. And your video pops up! I love this! Very creative, funny and interesting. I was actually thinking that if I put a blanket on the horse he would be saying to himself what in the heck are you doing? LOL. But the horse would just think to himself, oh I better let her do what she’s doing, she’s always hugging and kissing me anyway.
Love your videos! My horse will not go out in rain at all, but when it snows he insists on standing out in it. Snowstorms are the only time I blanket him and it comes off as soon as it's over.
Love this!!! I live in south Texas so we only blanket when we get a hard norther in that puts us under 30 and that’s only for the horses that are stalled. Most of ours can’t grow enough of a coat for freezing temps thanks to our typical temp being 60-80 degrees 😂😂 it’s the science plus vibes for me lmao
i use just 3 different types, a thin waterproof one ( my horses doesn’t like to stay into a stall he’s a rescue he feels like he’ll get left), a think winter waterproof, and a fly sheet!
Exactly what I do! my mare was an auction rescue and she HATES being stalled with a strong passion. Only thing is i also have a heavy blanket for when it gets below 5° F
I have pretty much the same, fly mesh for when it's hot but heaps of mozzies at night. Cotton for when it's not too hot but not cold, waterproof for rain, 100g polyfil for the start and end of winter and a 300g polyfil for when it's below 10degree Celcius. I also have fleece I can put underneath any blanket to add warmth but I prefered not to double rug, I think it would be uncomfortable.
Same here! But all of mine are combos with removable necks because they're cheaper and they allow for a bit more flexibility. But a warm water proof since neither of my horses grow decent winter coats, a light water proof since I live in the wettest part of Australia, and a fly sheet for the same reason because bugs are horrendous year round.
@@emmamclean5510 I also live in Australia, it rains a lot so they all have shelters because it can be so humid but rain too. I found the detachable necks to be amazing but once I took it off once I could never get it back on the same 😭
love the crazy lady voice, Gypsy Equestrian is now on my sub list, not sure why it wasn't B4...? Anyway, well done, keep it up! looking forward to more smothered giggles from watching your channel!
Honestly it depends on the horse, what they are doing, how they cope with their schedule, but mostly it’s up to the rider. A quarter horse that works a ranch I probably wouldn’t blanket if it wasn’t an extreme exigent circumstance, but a show horse who is in extreme work is blanket to hell and back, light, medium, heavy, sheets, coolers, etc. etc. Kensington and back on track for the win.
I can relate so much with the rich girl especially the «my horse is a showhorse” like what is this supposed to mean lol . Btw love your videos so much u reached 50k and u deserve another 50!xxx🤍🤍
I’m definitely the one with to many blankets 😂 I have a youngster who doesn’t grow a coat and will be cold backed if he gets cold at all. I wish I could just leave him naked like my older horse can be. Great video as always!
If your horse grows a good, thick, winter coat - and the snow doesn't melt off their back, but just sits there, in a high drift, in the middle of a blizzard ? You know they are holding their body heat in very well, just with their hair coat.....Yeah, I blanketed my mare regardless !!!! LOL.....
This made me laugh so much I love how this is hilarious and also so cool to see all his crazy different perspectives this was such a creative idea and just made my day even better when I read the title I was so interested to see what this was going to be like and now I know absolutely hilarious and the highlight of my day lol love your channel gypsy it’s heart warming and hilarious all in one I just cannot get over this video thank you so much gypsy equestrian/ Marina! 🤣🤣😁
@@GypsyEquestrian I love them all but maybe the one that’s the clickbait barn vlog or the sponsored barn vlog but I can’t really choose a top favorite because they are all super funny and entertaining.
Where I live it rains quite a bit. So I only blanket my horse for that. But he mostly stays without one! He does have a pretty nice winter coat though! Great video as always. I was laughing through the whole thing 😆
My horses stall is covered, but it’s a “mare motel” style so if it’s rainy or super windy in the winter I’ll throw her one blanket on her and call it good, otherwise she’s got her wonderful coat that ends up covering me head to toe when she sheds outs in spring 😂 (plus she lives in a desert so it’s only cold for one month out of the year anyways haha)
My horse has always been a good doer so he's had a few winters without any rugs at all because we didn't want him to be too fat going into spring. Now he's getting older he doesn't hold his weight so well and he has his rugs. You have to adapt to the circumstances. Anyway, we have lightweight and medium rugs, two of each in case of rips and one extra thick one that he doesn't wear much as it's rarely that cold. Oh and he has a waffle rug for if he's sweaty after a ride and a quilt for the rare occasions he's stabled but that belonged to my mum's old horse and is thirty years old so I don't think we come under the heading of 'rug collectors'! It's all very well saying they don't 'need' rugs but I know from experience you can save yourself a lot on the feed bill if all their feed isn't going into keeping them warm. The price of hay has almost doubled in the last two years so it's worth considering.
We have a Norwegian horse/Fjord horse, earlier she had the wildest winter coat, 100% waterproof. But she is 30+ years today and needs a good blanket now. We have a standartbreed who normally doesnt need a blanket, but when we hit -18 degrees Celsius she gets a blanket too. My trakhener stallion cant grow a decent winter coat, so heavy blankets for him. Different horses, different needs
Hi Marina! I know you’ll never see this but… I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Me and my sister always look forward to watching your videos because they always make us laugh and are super relatable! My favorite vid you did was the 5 stages of horse ownership one (but I love them all!) I just started my channel this week! And I’m trying to get 50 subscribers! Love your channel! Best wishes for the new year! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Mine is still growing. When he already has to deal with growing pains he's more sensitive to the cold. So then I usually put on a medium blanket during the night (he's outside 24/7) if temperatures drop below -5°C. If he's in good conditions and it's not a sudden drop he's fine without one even when it has -15°C. If it gets any colder than that I would put the blanket on again over the night
I love this video. I love all your videos. You should do a groom tack and ride with me video, I know your channel is more comedy but you could add it in i'm everyone would love it. Also congrats on your 51K subsribers.
I'm usually the "don't blanket, they don't need it" (for most healthy horses that have access to some sort of shelter). I also don't like blankets from a safety aspect. I'll never leave a halter on a horse turned out no matter how hard to catch they are, and while a blanket is safer than a halter, its still something for things to get caught on. I do blanket horses that I plan to take to a winter sale so they look sleek for that, and sometimes ill blanket a harder keeper if I'm struggling to get them to maintain weight during the winter if they're still in full work.
I am absolutely the no blanket people haha. We have an open barn and multiple horses to huddle together and on days it gets in the negative temps we give full feed as well, so even though we live in the northern states with lots of snow and ice a blanket is never needed
love this video. As a person who blankets their OLD ARABIAN that starts to shiver when it's 10°C I get so much flag for blanketing him but I don't care. He gets very pissy and annoyed if cold and he also loses so much weight, so yeah. I see more horses that maybe could use a blanket someday than "overblanketed" horses around in my area.
It really depends on the horse. Its been 4° at night my TWH mare is shaggy and warm and and naked..but my TB gelding has been in a blanket since 35° ..not really a hard concept. I also provide 24/7 hay to keep their furnace burning.
In my option, I think you should always have a blanket on your horse during winter, because what if the temp drops really low and you're not at home or something like that? And yes horses do grow a winter coat, but it's still kind of a thing you should do y'know? Especially if you live in a really cold place, like Canada, even the UK can get really cold, but that's just my option
Tell that to my old grade gelding! Even into his 30s, he flat refused to wear a blanket. He could take the blasted things off faster than I could get them on! If he was really annoyed, he would stuff it in his water bucket or leave it in the pond. 😮💨 Edit- he was born in North Dakota, and ended up living with me in the deep south. He probably just never considered it 'cold' here.
Kinda scary I`ve got both books she`s holding, cant make out the bottom too, but yeah.. 'bare nescesseties" them books LoL This video is so well put together. Thank you!
Our old gelding (29), who sadly died this january had many blankets (7 or 8) because he had not that much coat. But 3 of these blankets where fly blankets because of his allergic reactions to fly bites (very big edema). Our ardennes mare (13) has so much fur that she doesnt need it. She has 2 fly masks and thats it. Our newest mare (14) is a half blind comtois with just the bare minimum of muscles. So she spent the last year developing muscles but no real coat. But we think next winter she will have a fur like our other mare. She inherited all the blankets of our gelding but just gets one when the temperatures go under the freezing point. And she has also 2 fly masks.
Blanketing and trailer loading, about the same level of drama and debate goes on. I live in MN, and there seems to be this weird phenomenon of people in northern/cold climates that refuse to blanket their horses ever for any reason and use it as almost some odd sense of bragging rights to people in warmer climates that they NEVER use a blanket and its -1,000°F with 500mph straight line winds and 30' snow drifts and that their horses are "fine"...and somehow if you blanket your horse that means you're not as tough, as a human, in a house. Will they survive? Probably yes. But I think it's more balanced than that. I've found in many horses that while they may be visually fine (not severely shivering) one day, the next day they are colicky because when they had the option to go eat, drink, or stand in their shelter with no blanket on, they chose shelter and hay and not so much water. But if they have a blanket on, they will continue drinking normally and not colic. I think there is more to choosing when to blanket or not blanket than one standard air temp, for me there are multiple factors.
My mother is the one who will blanket no matter what. She has haflinger welsh crosses. Those fuzzy buggars are pretty much set of you give them a belly full of hay. My girl is a high tb content QH, she runs hot. This means she stays warm but uses a lot of calories in the process. It’s much easier to keep weight on her if we blanket. Our fourth horse is a Lipizzaner TB cross. He just plain freezes. Literally almost froze to death once. He had stopped shivering and was down with no sign of getting up. He probably needs a heavier blanket. We usually only blanket if it goes to around 28 for more than two or three hours. There’s a lot of factors for us, how cold has it been, is there a chance of rain, wind speed, amount of hay in the barn, if we need to unblanket the next day how early? All sorts of things. If it rains they get blanketed around 35-40 unless they are shivering at higher temps.
Our neighbors kidded us about blanketing our horses. Calls it their "jammies". Live in the Pacific Northwest, my horses have more blankets and weights than I do. Wet rain and wind and some stand out in the rain by choice. Also depends of horses age, breed and natural coat. Bless them that they stand quietly getting blanketed as weather changes.
I'm all for blanketing, but yes, horses have a thing called winter coats that keep them warm but blankets are especially useful when it's raining or it you can help keep them cleaner or if it's snowing you can blanket to keep the snow off them
We live in Germany and yes, I do blanket my ponies. Why? Because they live in an open stable and I don't want them to stand there with wet, thick winter coat in the heavy wind. So they get a thin rain-sheet on their backs to keep water and wind out. My islandic crossbreed also has a real winter blaket, because at some point during winter I have to clip him, if I want to keep riding and driving him. He get's such a thick winter coat that he's sweating heavily on the warmer days. This year I already had to clip at the beginning of october since his coat was already too thick for the still very warm weather. But since it's not really cold yet, he's still doing fine with the rainsheet. The weather here is really crazy this year and it's still too warm for already being near the end of the year! In the summer I put flysheets on them, because they get very annoyed with all these insects and I even caught them kicking them away this year. But even though I use only two types of blankets (+ the winter one) I own at least 10 of them. Two for every pony, in case something happens to the blanket that can't be fixed right away. Learned my lesson with that.. And I also needed to buy new blankets every year with a still growing pony. Now my younger one is able to wear them out until he's eighter grown out of them too or they are unusable. So far that system is working great, even though I always have the problem that the blankets are to tight for my older ones neck. He just has to much neck and shoulder that's not fitting into the size we need xD
Learnt that they had in some country done a test over some months were they taught different horse races to tell when they wanted a rug, wanted it off or just wanted to keep it as they had, and they would every 2 hours ask the horses what they wanted. And almost every horse every time didnt want a blanket unless it was raining and blowing at the same time and it was -10C°. Ofc like i said there were some horses that wanted the rug more often or less than the others but most of them didnt want a rug most of the time and was happy with not having one on. Ofc you know your horse the best, but look for signs that tells you what your horse wants. Just because y oh are cold doesnt mean your horse is. They are really good at controlling ans changing their temperature and their coats are mostly waterproof as long as you dont clip them
My TB gelding has to wear heavy coats in winter because he is a big baby haha my mare on the other hand turns into the abominable snowman and shreds any coats I try to put on her lolol
Which one are you? 👇🏻

They're sturdy northern horses so they can take the cold with their thick fluffy coats, but I've seen them shiver before and I'm not letting that happen again if I can help it.
This is amazing. So true.🤣🤣🤣
Love it so much. Next you need to show how different people care for their horse in general! The pampered horse, the outdoor 24/7 horse, etc. 😂 just an idea :)
"The tripledy dipledy heavy heavy" that really cracked me up! 😂
😂 (I do use a show blanket tho) great video!!!
my pampered little King Connectika couldn't possibly make it without blankets... turnouts... coolers... quartersheets... 😆😆😆 that OTTB LYFE lolol
This was hilarious!!! Could you do an update on Kazí?
i use just 3 different types, a thin waterproof one ( my horses doesn’t like to stay into a stall he’s a rescue he feels like he’ll get left), a think winter waterproof, and a fly sheet!
I don't have horse, but I use blankets very often for myself. 😂
"These horses are filthy animals" omigod I'm dying! 😅🤣😂
the doublety tripity heavy heavy
🤣😂🤣😂 your so good at acting! I would not keep a straight face!
I got here 2 mins after it was posted! Love your comedy videos! Yesterday I watched every single comedy video in like 3 hours maybe! Lol
Hahaha that’s awesome thank you! Which one is your favorite?
@@GypsyEquestrian I love them all but maybe the one that’s the clickbait barn vlog or the sponsored barn vlog but I can’t really choose a top favorite because they are all super funny and entertaining.
@@GypsyEquestrian I almost forgot one of my favorites! The one upper equestrian! It’s very funny!
hahaha! 🤣lol I love your Videos!! ❤
OMG I love this video you’re such a good actor do more like this please😂.
I LOVE your videos! They always make me happy!
Where I live it rains quite a bit. So I only blanket my horse for that. But he mostly stays without one! He does have a pretty nice winter coat though!
Great video as always. I was laughing through the whole thing 😆
I love your videos they make me smile every time I watch them 🤣🐎🐴
The struggle/fight is real 🤣
I have a Chonky draft halflinger and I only blanket him when it is going to reach below 25 overnight
Some of these were pretty funny, good job and keep it up!
I’m def the nerd one🤣🤣🤣
My horses stall is covered, but it’s a “mare motel” style so if it’s rainy or super windy in the winter I’ll throw her one blanket on her and call it good, otherwise she’s got her wonderful coat that ends up covering me head to toe when she sheds outs in spring 😂 (plus she lives in a desert so it’s only cold for one month out of the year anyways haha)
This is just perfection, thank you!
THE WAY THE CRAZY LADY TALKS REMINDS ME OF MY OLD INSTRUCTOR TALKS SM IT MAKES ME LAUGH EVERY TIME 🥰
This is amazing!!!😂
We have a Norwegian horse/Fjord horse, earlier she had the wildest winter coat, 100% waterproof. But she is 30+ years today and needs a good blanket now. We have a standartbreed who normally doesnt need a blanket, but when we hit -18 degrees Celsius she gets a blanket too. My trakhener stallion cant grow a decent winter coat, so heavy blankets for him. Different horses, different needs
A rains sheet, a jacket and a cooler for after workouts 😂
My horse looks like a woolly mammoth in the winter 🤣
Mine is still growing. When he already has to deal with growing pains he's more sensitive to the cold. So then I usually put on a medium blanket during the night (he's outside 24/7) if temperatures drop below -5°C. If he's in good conditions and it's not a sudden drop he's fine without one even when it has -15°C. If it gets any colder than that I would put the blanket on again over the night
They’re filthy animals...c’mon! 😂😂 love it!
I never blanket my mare. Live in Florida. Hello! No need to blanket! Soooo, I'm definetly "No Blanket Lady" 😅🤣
Omgosh...LAUGHING!! So funny! The characters are so like girls I knew!! Those silly barn withces!!
I love it! You can be a comedian.
I love this video. I love all your videos. You should do a groom tack and ride with me video, I know your channel is more comedy but you could add it in i'm everyone would love it. Also congrats on your 51K subsribers.
I love the new Zurreal shirts!
This was hilarious! Well done!
I just go from one to two as it gets colder-
Your are so funny!!! You are my favorite RUclipsr!!
1:22 the smile🤣🤣 she really said “I’m gonna kill you if you say that again” 😂🤣
I am absolutely the no blanket people haha. We have an open barn and multiple horses to huddle together and on days it gets in the negative temps we give full feed as well, so even though we live in the northern states with lots of snow and ice a blanket is never needed
I am probably the one with a billion blankets 😂
“Doubley doopity heavy” 😂
I love how she was trying to be sciencey through the whole video. 🤣🤣🤣
Lol 😂 Honestly it is hard for me to choose. I don’t know which one I am, by the way your channel is the best.
i only put my horses blanket on when it gets down into the single digits and below 0, i just make sure she has a ton of hay. very relatable!
love this video.
Bahaha! Thanks for the laugh, needed it 😂🤣
In my option, I think you should always have a blanket on your horse during winter, because what if the temp drops really low and you're not at home or something like that? And yes horses do grow a winter coat, but it's still kind of a thing you should do y'know? Especially if you live in a really cold place, like Canada, even the UK can get really cold, but that's just my option
Tell that to my old grade gelding! Even into his 30s, he flat refused to wear a blanket. He could take the blasted things off faster than I could get them on!
If he was really annoyed, he would stuff it in his water bucket or leave it in the pond. 😮💨
Edit- he was born in North Dakota, and ended up living with me in the deep south. He probably just never considered it 'cold' here.
Kinda scary I`ve got both books she`s holding, cant make out the bottom too, but yeah.. 'bare nescesseties" them books LoL
This video is so well put together.
This video is so perfect, I think that my friend (who has the horses, 16) would be like the lady who believes in just the horse's coat.
You should do different types of people putting a bridle on! Also I love ur channel
🤦♀️ I'm that person with tons of blankets, making sure my girl is warm enough lol
"Doubledy Doupedy Heavy Heavy"
Ah yes. I have that one 😂
Is there an insta reel ?? Hahahhaa gold!
I'm all for blanketing, but yes, horses have a thing called winter coats that keep them warm but blankets are especially useful when it's raining or it you can help keep them cleaner or if it's snowing you can blanket to keep the snow off them
This video made my day.❤️
So goood hahaa! Oh hey! I had a question. Do you think you will sell stickers of Zara? Or maybe even Zinny?🤩
I plan on it!!! 😃😃😃
@@GypsyEquestrian 😱 yay!! Im so excited lol i love stickers!
They are really good at controlling ans changing their temperature and their coats are mostly waterproof as long as you dont clip them
Where is that pinky/purple horse shirt from? It’s gorgeous!
My TB gelding has to wear heavy coats in winter because he is a big baby haha my mare on the other hand turns into the abominable snowman and shreds any coats I try to put on her lolol
When I was a kid, my pony was a real fur ball in the winter so I rode bareback to stay warm.
