The guy who said, “That got me more than any horror movie pop out” is exactly right. The Ben Gardner scene isn’t a cheap jump scare. Spielberg carefully constructed the movie, and by the time this scene occurs the audience was already feeling an intense creeping dread. The “payoff” works beautifully, particularly because the music shriek is timed just a hair after the head’s appearance. Sublime work all around.

That part in the movie made everyone jump in the theater. It still does. This movie was done brilliantly. After all these years it's still #1. We had a cottage on a lake. That was the hardest summer ever. Trying to explain why I don't want to swim to the raft my father got for us. I'm 58 and still makes it hard to swim. And that's just lakes. I had a very hard time in Lake Michigan. Went to the ocean . Got in to my knees. A wave came it was over my waist and pushed me back on shore. That's exactly where I spent my vacation . .......on the beach.

This scene caused people to jump so much back in the cinema in 1975, it sent popcorn airborne. It was an old converted theatre, so had an 'Upper Circle'. I remember seeing popcorn rain down onto the people below from the Upper Circle😃. One of the greatest cinema experiences of my life. Scared the willies out of me, didn't swim in the ocean for years (even deep puddles were suspect). Last year I was swimming in a volcanic lake in France on holiday with friends...still thought of this movie!. Dammit Spielberg......😁!

Remember it well. I saw the movie in the theater the week it opened. When Ben Gardner's head popped out of the hull, the place was filled with screaming and it rained popcorn. One of the best jump scares in cinematic history.

I was 18 when this movie came out in 1975. When that head popped out there was so much screaming in that theater including me! The friend next to me about ripped my arm out of its socket! Back then there weren't a lot of movies with jump scares like there are today. That was probably the best summer of my life!

My mother went and saw it with her best friend. When that head popped out her hand swung and hit her friend in the thigh leaving her with a huge bruise.

When this movie came out, it's all folks talked about for weeks. I remember Johnny Carson, who was host of the Tonight show on NBC at the time, did a comedy routine about safe swimming tips. My favorite was, "Always use the buddy system. If a shark attacks, feed him your buddy."

Such a brilliant move to have the shark theme playing so that you think the shark is going to attack Hooper, but then Ben Gardner pops in to say hello and the audience freaks out.

  • @RichardM1366

Ben Gardner's head was a shocker. You expect the shark to come out but it throws a curve ball and you get a classic jump scare from Ben Gardner's head. They don't make movies like this anymore.

Everyone in the cinema jumped and screamed in 1975, when the head popped out of the boat. Steven Spielberg added this scene as an after thought, near the end of the producting of the film. He knew the audience would sh*t bricks, after seeing it.

You can tell the reactioners who are honestly watching the movie and those who are using the films to 'perform'; Alanda Parker and Ashleigh Burton being two of the latter. But even given that, the scare from the Ben Gardner boat scene penetrates performance and causes all reactioners to respond naturally without pretense. It's such a well-timed scare, too.
