ABOUT THE GLOW UP DIARIES: At rock bottom I picked up a camera and began documenting my physical and mental pain that seemingly existed without meaning. From age 17 to 22 years old I recorded the “Glow Up Diaries” which is a raw docu-series of my deepest, most painful moments in an effort to find a newer, brighter existence. I openly share my difficulties despite the insistence of the media that such “shameful” feelings be kept in a closet.

THIS VIDEO WAS FILMED IN DECEMBER 2018. To those commenting hate about wealth - I earned my money myself and saved up for this. I have been wanting to go to Shanghai since I was a child. I work and I don’t get anything from my parents. When I was editing this video I had so much fun being creative with the storytelling and editing. I was excited to share it with you guys in hopes of inspiring others because I loved watching videos of people’s crazy travel experiences growing up. It inspired me to set goals and make it happen for myself one day when I was older. It’s all about perspective. You can choose to hate and be unhappy about a highlight in someone’s life or you can become inspired by it and say hey..maybe not now but I know that if I’m committed, I can make it happen for myself one day. That’s exactly what I told myself years ago. I have nothing but gratitude for everything that has happened in my life, the good and the bad. Also my issue wasn’t university. My issue was the university I WAS AT. It didn’t specialize in what I wanted to learn and the location was terrible for where I want to go with my career. I’m not going to stay in a place that doesn’t help me grow. Check out Episode 15 of the Glow up Diaries for a more in depth response to my decision to dropping out of college.

its crazy to remember that the glow up diaries were filmed like two years ago, like damn, the world is so different. This whole series would be different if filmed now...its like a time travelling machines or a time capsule. I find the idea so interesting. I just want to say something real quick. Everyone who says: „It’s always the same/it’s getting booooring/u repeat urself“ that’s what a glow-up is all about. U NEED to FAIL. U need to fail 100 times to success once. I love this series, it helped me be that healthy person I’m today and I’m unbelievable grateful for it. Alivia helped me get through my hard years, she gave me hope when I almost gave up. So please, do not hate someone who’s trying to help other people. She’s doing amazing and I’m proud of her, proud of myself and proud of everyone else who had to go through this or is going through this at the moment. Long story short, thank u :) for everything, u saved me from myself.

I’m really doubting if continuing to fail will lead to success. Glowing up is so hard. I feel like I got worse since I wanted to improve myself... If 100 failures is really what I need for the one success then I guess I’ll keep going.

The problem isn’t about her having money. If she has the resources to take a trip for her mental health, she should absolutely do so. The problem is that a lot of her videos are framed as advice. So, although it’s not what she meant, it can very much come across like “struggling with school and mental health? Just take a luxury trip to find yourself!” When that’s not something most people can afford. *The problem is that Alivia’s videos often blur the lines between what is advice, and what is for herself.*

Still there are stuff within the “unaffordable experiences” that you still can do. You can change the way you look from home, to eat something new look up recipes, doing something new is also doable from home. The important thing is the intention and keeping yourself busy with nurturing stuff that are available to you.

Ok, since I live in Shanghai I'd like to make it clear for some people:
1. Food in China is cheap. Even if the restaraunt looks fancy, even if the food looks fancy - I've never spent more than 40 dollars (not alone, with at least 1 friend) on our "luxury" days. And since I love sea food, it usually includes lobsters, shrimps, crabs and so on.
2. Hotels in China are much cheaper than in Europe/US - for the most beautiful hotels with several rooms, a bathtub, I've never paid more than 80 usd per night. For the cheapest one, when I needed to save money I paid no more than 20 usd per night but that hotel was also in the city centre and still pretty nice. If I wanted, I could find a cheaper option in the suburbs.
3. Other things like bars, markets, different activities are also pretty cheap.
The only thing that was quite expensive is the flight but it's not impossible for someone to save enough money for their comfort!
Stop blaming Alivia for having money for this trip. She worked hard and deserved being happy, and there's nothing bad about sharing it. You, people, were enjoying this channel, watching this "netflix show", you liked seeing her struggling and fighting with obstacles, "supported" her when she had problems, because we all have problems, BUT as soon as Alivia felt happy and free you started judging her! Truly, some people just cannot bear seeing somebody having a good life. Stop calling these series "fake" or " pretentious", admit that you are simply jealous. Think about your feelings when you watch it - do you really hate what you see or you actually want your life to look like this? (Once in a while, because if you remember well, she only went on a short trip). If you chose the second answer, work hard. Your hard work will pay off.

I would like to move to Tokyo when I get older. I live in the US but I want to travel the world and experience new things.
i actually think the timing of this vide couldn't be perfect.. lets remember china as the beautiful and rich culture it is and not just based on events over the past few months

This really opened my eyes. When the video progressed i suddenly started crying without knowing why. I thought about it a bit and it’s because there is nothing for me where i live now. There is nothing i want here and just being here demotivates me from everything. I don’t even have friends here, i isolate myself, I am constantly stressed and I even developed an eating disorder. The only thing that keeps me here is school. School that i have to finish because it’s obligated and i have no choice. I just know that the second i have the chance i`ll go far away, to somewhere i can be happy. And just watching this made me remember that i am going to get that and i just have to wait a little bit more. Thank you Alivia, for reminding me that i can go somewhere i feel better aswell

My last year of school was really drowning as well - I felt stressed, lonely, tired and demotivated. But after I finished school, I just took a year off and went abroad as an Aupair in Rome, stoped thinking about my future and purely enjoying the moment! It was the best! I can only recommend taking a bit of time to clear your head - even if it is only throughout summer break! Now I’ve started college which is also great since you get to reinvent yourself and get to meet a bunch of new people sitting in the same boat. Hang in there! Whatever you do, I’m sure your time after school will be great! Just be open to new experiences, be confident in yourself (because you’re awesome!) and don’t be shy to be the first to start up a conversation!

I can relate to your story I went to school and honestly I felt like school was the only thing that I could focus on.There were days I would come home crying because of people that brought me down.i always think I'm alone but my mindset has changed alot where by I believe I can go far .Life is like a test we need to path and trust me by you not giving up and putting Jesus in your life you can accomplish anything stay strong coz I believe you will go far

the best thing about those diaries is how it shows that glowing isnt a linear path, its a cycle of ups and downs and it might get very repetetive but the point is to keep trying, and each time we start again we have yet way more experience and conclusions about things. being here since ep one and all i have to say alivia, thank you for being such an inspiration.

In the past, I couldn't imagine that you could drop out of college. Last year, I dropped out too, I was depressed and suffering from anxiety episodes so I started with therapies. It took so much time to me to take the decision but I found in my healing process that it was the bravest thing I have ever done. I'm so thankful for this video Alivia.
How did your parents react? Im thinking about dropping out, but don't know how to tell my parents.
@@lockheart619 Hi. My parents saw that I was depressed, my atittude was different because I felt that I had taken bad decisions. I received more support from my mom but they both knew I needed time to grow up, organize my ideas and goals and rest. If you need time to think and heal, go ahead, it's better to make mistakes now than in 20 years later, nobody wants to feel lost. I hope you can take a pleased decision not for others but for yourself ♡

I loved the video Alivia! It was beautifully shot and gave some great advice. It's so sad to see the video's message be overshadowed by negative comments mocking your trip. I think a lot of people are forgetting that this whole series is supposed to talk about Alivia's personal glow up story. She isn't telling us that we need to hop on an international flight to glow up, she's simply sharing her own experience and what she learned from it. She even give us little steps like changing your hairstyle or trying new foods as ways to mimic some of experiences she had.

This was kinda bittersweet to watch for me because I wish I could’ve done this when I was in college. I also felt lost and in need of change and inspiration, but my family forced me to continue studying at college. They were NOT supportive of me taking time off and I didn’t have any money to do anything otherwise. So now I have a degree and work at an unfulfilling full-time job, but it’s paying my bills so I have to appreciate it. I can’t deny that I get jealous of people like you though, people that ditched college to travel to nice countries and stay in pretty hotels and eat cute pastries to “find themselves”. And there’s people like me who had to accept reality and just muddle through all of the mundane in order to survive. Still feeling lost by the way, but now I can’t help but feel bitter too 🥀
I get this but I did it to myself. I wasn't sure if I was going to get any support when moving out so did the sensible thing rather than what I wanted. Honestly you have to steal moments of happiness. DO take some time off to travel if you can and try out different things that can make you happy where you are now. You literally have to do small gestures that make you happy so you can stay sane!
I'm 18 years old and I don't feel happy with my career, neither with my school. I've talked with my parents about this many times, but they aren't helping. They think I must finish this career. Neverthless, I can't help but feel completely lost and helpless. Any tip?
Where do you think she got the money for that trip? They are called savings. She also had to work to earn that money, what happens is that she does not spend money on material nonsense things. So you start saving and a couple of years from now you can give yourself the pleasure of traveling 😘

okay but your reasons behind dropping out that you stated made me realize that I was about to make a huge mistake by not telling my mum I don't want to do psychology anymore. I like it a lot but I'm not motivated and I've realized it would be really damaging on my mental health and am putting myself at risk of triggering trauma flashbacks by hearing other peoples traumas as I wanted to work in the trauma unit...
What I wanna do since forever but pushed aside bc my mum doesn't want me to do it as she did it and didn't like it... It's to be a nursery and kindergarten teacher! For the lil babies uwu

민지야~ I've always wanted to perform in ice shows- like Disney on ice. I'm in college now with a sport management major and I like it but it really feels like a back up to me. My first love is skating and I want to be the one performing. My coach was in icecapades when she was a skater and a couple months ago she said I could just leave college and audition now if I wanted to- and that made me really think. My parents' logic is that it's important for me to have a back up career and I think it's wise to aswell. But I don't know what I think about the idea of locking myself into a back up plan. I've thought about a gap semester just to learn more about myself but I don't know. This is coming from someone who is going to the same college her parents AND her grandmother went to.
That is my exact situation!!!! My passion is music :) I’m good at psychology and I have a passion for it but I’m not motivated and it also brings up trauma for me as well. But I don’t know what to do in the mean time :/ apply for college and go into psychology or something else...
Same. I’m really afraid that pursuing psychology will be triggering but thankfully I have four whole years before actually doing it and I’m taking AP psych next year so I can try it out before devoting my entire career to it. Hopefully the therapy I’m doing in the meantime will help

You definitely should take a break from college, the 1st year is overwhelming and usually makes us feel lost (I'm not even in college, but my first year of high school was like this, so I can only assume it feels the same) and we need a fresh perspective on life to find what we truly want to do.

@@gabriellameattray9778 no. Joy is the assurance that God is in control of everything. It isn't a feeling and therefore isn't fleeting. Its steadfast. Happiness is a feeling, feelings are fleeting, ever changing and not to be trusted. The sun could be shining, you have money in the bank, people who love you and everything could be right in the world yet you still don't feel happy. Or you could be happy and one small thing happens and it disappears. Happiness is fleeting, like trying to hold onto dry sand. But joy is long lasting.
I think the message of this video is not like, "Go take a luxury trip". It's more like, "Go try something you never did, try something completely new". You can take a walk in a park you've never been to, you can start learning how to play ukulele or how to skate. Just choose something and dive in, no matter what it is. That's what I'm doing right now, and I tell you it works and it's worth trying!
She has actually glowed up so much from the first videos and that's more motivating than the glow ups from a makeup makeover and a new hairstyle ugh oml😭❤️ she is SO inspiring
For people struggling w/ acne, you could try and use these products before considering starting accutane:
1. salicylic acid + benzoyl peroxide (do *not* mix them together. use them on alternate days)
2. differin
3. tretinoin
4. isotretinoin (accutane)

she does bring light and positivity, but she has a lot of unhealthy mindsets and a long, long way to go before she’s ready to help others professionally. Even some of her videos can be harmful. Don’t get me wrong- she’s a wonderful girl. But she’s not there yet

When I turned 20 I decided to move to Shanghai and that is still the best decision I've took in my life. A few months later, due to coronavirus, I headed back home to France. Now, I'm just waiting for borders to reopen, and then I'll move to China again. Living there has definitely changed the way I see life

Alivia, I don't know if you'll see this but on the chance that you might I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate this series and you in general. I've been a subscriber ever since the beginning of 2018, and you've inspired me so much. I've always wanted to lose weight and become the best me that I can be, however, I've failed too many times to count. But something changed this morning, I went and worked out for the first time in months, and I can say that I actually did push myself (I've never pushed myself this hard before). And I ate a great breakfast and then I saw your video. And I knew it was a sign that this time was different. So, thank you Alivia. Stay safe, Love you!
Okay I just finished watching and girl, yes it took long until this episode was uploaded, but it was worth the wait. The amout of effort put into this is crazy, and this video is so aesthetically pleasing, holy shit.

I rewatch this this video over and over because I relate to it so much. Like, I don't want to sound silly, but for years it's like my heart is aching, I don't feel like I am where I'm supposed to be. I've always had this desire to go to Asia, I work quite a lot and I've been doing nothing but saving up, but it's still expensive tho. But the worst part is not having anyone willing to take a trip like that with me. And I don't want to do something like that on my own. You inspire me a lot and I love your videos and mentality!
My Grandma is from Shanghai and my dad was brought up in Hong Kong and I didn't realise how emotional i felt about someone talking about these two places (my dad's family is now in New Zealand and I haven't seen them for 8 years) until the end when you said about starting a new chapter of life there. So happy for your December 2018 self, as well as current. Thank you for all your videos as a whole as well. I started getting severe acne on my cheeks about a year ago now, and it's cleared up immensely for many reasons but my complexion is red and i have scars. I like seeing other ppl comment their stories. It makes me realize that I'm not the only one going through what I'm dealing with right now. College isn't for me, but I'm still figuring out what I'm going to do if I drop out or *how* to tell my parents. I need advice, but I don't know who to turn to. Seeing other people's stories make me realize I'm not alone.
Experienced Advice here : You should first figure out what you really like/want to do. Dont urge to drop or you will regret. And if you are clear with your thoughts on what you really want to do then you can tell your parents abt it.

@@martyna______6 Yes but as Alivia stated, she did not have any financial support from her parents, she worked for her money, meaning your parents don't have to be wealthy to begin with. :)
@@varelabelsoffical If your family is wealthy, it gives you way more that just money. It gives you the feeling of stability, mental calmness and is basically a safety net. Of course at this point in her career Alivia has some financial stability of her own so she doesn't need it, but I bet it was comforting at the beginning.

For those of you saying that her message is " If you're feeling loss then take an expensive trip across the world" then you are very wrong and you're not seeing the point of the video, you don't have to take a trip around the world to clear your mind, you can go wherever you want, or you can go on a drive or go on a walk, do what YOU think you need to do and what you have the opportunity to do, this is what Alivia had the opportunity to do
Edit: And the "fake phone call" in the beginning, they could have filmed that after the trip to foreshadow what was to come

It s a brave decision but it is so important to do what you feel is right for you. I did it a few years ago. I left my university to become a pastry chef. And now i own my own luxury pastry shop making high end cakes for amazing clients and earning money with what i love most and what makes me happy. Keep going and listen to your heart, no one knows what is the right or wrong decision beforehand, you just have to figure it out. And if it turns out to have been a mistake just try to make the best of the situation and do some damage control. Thats just life❤️

I always loved this series, and you Alivia in general. And it's true, most of us can't relate to wealth, and even when we save up, most of us won't be able to do what you do. But if people comment on that, then that's because they don't understand the meaning of the video. They see the money only. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) what you want to show is that sometimes, you have to leave where you are to get a better view of your situation, to think back, to find yourself again. Sometimes you're not in the right place, and you have to leave if you want to grow.
I don't think the people commenting on your privilege are necessarily hating on you,, they're just pointing out how you're not very relatable. I did enjoy the video, however.

Well after she moved out of college, she went on to move into an apartment of her own as an independent young adult. She was very happy, healthy and free from stress. Making her own money and living. Trying to seek something or maybe already found a passion for learning new things. But then corona came and she had to move back into her parents house.
She still uploads videos tho, all these are past videos that she edited later. The next season will come out in October 2020

alivia... thank you. i’ve been struggling with depression as well as binge eating disorder since jan. after some major life events left me alone, to my own broken devices. i’ve had no motivation for work, school, not even my well-being. this series has given me a new perspective on life... it’s- no- you’ve inspired me to change. i remember watching you years back for inspiration (for flexibility haha) and i’m so glad i returned to your channel to find myself once again inspired by you. thank you:)!
This video really reminded me of some current life goals. I’m just about to start my freshman year of college, and I realize that I need to go for myself. I want to pursue animation. And I know it will be really hard, but seeing Alivia take action towards her own dreams makes me want to work towards mine. I also really want to travel and see the world. So this kinda ignited a flare of determination to land a good job so I can save up money and travel the world when I’m older. I would love to experience so many new cultures, foods, music, and living styles.
