I've suspected that, even though Kojima has impressed the idea that DeathStranding is NOT a metal gear game, lots of people expected it to be one so the backlash against it was pretty hard. A majority of gamers didn't expect a completely different experience .....
lol i feel like this game is also a commentary on how we tend to approach life, filling up our todo list imagining we can do it all. I'm at a season in life where I want to do so much but quiet literally can't, which is probably why I find myself "stumbling" every so often
Haha you'd think they'd have incinerators everywhere for this reason! I guess they thought it'd be safer to just get the bodies far away and then burn them?
@gnosis_gaming Yeah, they do explain it in-game. I forget the exact reasoning, but I believe burning bodies releases a large amount of chiralium, which apparently can be toxic and attracts BTs.
I spent over 100 hours playing Death Stranding. Full completion, all roads built, a zipline system linking everything together. Genuinely one of my favourite gaming experiences. Its such a quiet, thoughful game that rewards slow play and taking everything in. Nowadays I can barely stand playing the Assassins Creed and such, as it feels so pointless compared to Death Stranding.
I've been searching for the "meta" angle to DS that I expect from Kojima games, and this essay is the most thought-provoking interpretation I've encountered yet. Thank you for making it! And, remember: likes get likes!
Clicked on your video because it was recommending my videos and the tittle made me curious. I gotta say, the script did not disappoint, great points all around!!! Keep it up! Really good content.
@@gnosis_gaming thank you! Yeah, I’ve been trying my best and am really proud of the content. Hopefully we all do well, because I think our script is really good. Do you plan on making more videos like this or focusing more on nostalgic games?
I was focused on old games more because I only owned a Switch and didn't play a lot of new games, but recently I got a PS5... Death Stranding was one of my first purchases@@Igones
I haven't played this game since it came out (I ended up selling my PS4 because I needed money and need to catch it on sale for PC,) but it's one of those games I'd really like to play again because I got deeply addicted to the back and forth journeys across the map, creating new paths each time. I can't wait for the sequel.
I always liked that there were hardly any enemies in the game. It felt like being a hiker going from point a to point b and having to fight with the weight of my pack and the terrain to make it to the destination before a heavy rain or snowfall.
wow this is also a great video. Subscribing definitely. How you felt about all those quests piling up at 3:39 hit it on the nail. Your music choices are great too.
It's not satire. Kojima doesn't engage with media like that. It's fine to analyze your relationship to game design, but I wouldn't ascribe your proclivities on HK
I was thinking about that! Some people seem to want more action against Mules, but I think that would take away from what makes Death Stranding stand out. We don't necessarily need more sci-fi dystopian FPs games... Maybe they can send Sam to another continent and bring them into Bridges? Haha
@@gnosis_gaming some of the early mule activity was fun in that it influenced the best route to take. But yes, i agree, we have plenty of Sci fi FPS. Death stranding's forte is as the premiere sci-fi horror hiking simulator. I found myself wanting more BT interaction. Once you learned you could just kinda dodge them, they became infinitely less scary. I can't put my finger on what exactly was missing but i'd love if BT events were less scripted and had a larger variety of results to maintain that unpredictability and anxiety found in early game.
Might check it out. At first I was turned off by the nature of the game. But since you described the point so well, it is worth checking out for myself now.
In another five years, people will enmasse pretend that they realized this first and proclaim it as Kojima’s most subversive work ever I had always suspected that the at-first ridiculous tasks you’re essentially forced to do (including DELIVERING A PIZZA) were just Kojima throwing sh-t at a wall and being vague about it all to hide from the potential backlash once the game released…but now? People are starting to “get it”
@@yeez13 Haha, yeah maybe… though sometimes it takes time for the mass audience to truly understand a work’s message. When Hermann Melville published Moby Dick it was a failure with both the critics and the general reading public. It didn’t start getting read again until the 1920s, when academics ‘rediscovered’ it and started to do a re-evaluation of the work.
Your videos are so helpful. I used to see games like Final Fantasy series and Death Stranding as artworks which contain some wonderful juice but inaccessible to me, because I just can't gather the willpower to crack their tough shell. After watching your videos, I realize the truth is that most of their mechanics are so boring and meaningless to me, so contrived and arbitrary that I wasn't interested in the first place. There are definitely amazing bits and pieces in these games, but the majority of them are just that, boring. I have my life to waste on other, more interesting stuff. Thank you so much for panning the gold nuggets out of these enormous amount of gunk, so people like me can appreciate their value without wading the muddy waters. Thank you.
although i wouldn't call it exactly satire, i don't think it is, maybe meditation - as you said - would make more sense. he is known for "meta". although i don't think the central idea comes from this far. some central gameplay elements just make some games pretty different. what if its a platformer, but you moved the scenario instead of the character? that's super monkey ball. what if the inventory WAS YOU? that's DS. it might as well be how this idea has started, we don't know. it is the game i find most relaxing EVER. now being 5 starts on everything i just install every now and then and deliver lost packages from other players, build infra to help the community, repair, like stuff etc for a while. it is a very contemplative and lonely game and i like those. and as you said, it forces you to slow down (even with all the buffs later tbh). but it is a very niche game and it's not for everyone, people need to understand that before jumping in. it was marketed by sony as a whole different thing tbh
i think i preordered this game, and the first playthrough was so miserable for me. i carried max weight all the time and took every available mission and did them in the order i got them. playing the game that way just ended up making me angry. the pizza delivery missions were the last straw. driving home (in real life) one day i saw a postal worker trudging through heavy snow and i was like "fuck this job" and didnt touch the game again until this year. this time i only took 1 delivery at a time, and didnt bother building any roads or hoarding any resources whatsoever. it was much more fun this time around
His games come across as an acquired taste.. I haven’t decided whether to try this yet.. I think I’ll work through the gazillion MGS first & his version of Castlevania
A true Delivery simulator 😂 Not what i expected from the dude who made mgs But yeah i played this spend a good amount of time on it And it got so boring after awhile
it's not, it's a great game, but also not satire. it is what it is and it's not for everyone. i think most of the problem was being advertised as an action something mgs-like for everyone when it's pretty much nothing like this. it's a completely different thing WITH some stealth elements. it's a niche game. people are really spoiled and get ANGRY when something is cattered towards them. some stuff just isn't for you and that's ok
There is a reason why all the highest grossing games are multiplayer slop. Gamers live and die eating shit and complain when being fed shit. They support video games being art while also supporting games made for "everyone" which in itself is a contradiction.

I always found it bizarre how far the incinerators were from population centers given how destructive voidouts were.
