      I'm pretty sure on his studio recordings like this one, he double tracked (or even triple tracked) his acoustic guitar... in fact, I borrowed that technique from him for my own music! But I agree with you, this comment is very true for his live performances

    Legend

  • @WallaceWylie
    @WallaceWylie 5 лет назад +19

    The lyrics at the start of the second verse are: He endures, that's all, mundane as it is.

    • @WallaceWylie
      @WallaceWylie 5 лет назад +6

      You clearly hear him singing "endures". It doesn't sound like adores at all. And it doesn't even make sense. What song does he adore?

    • @WallaceWylie
      @WallaceWylie 5 лет назад +5

      He's singing "He endures, that's all, mundane as it is". As a human being, he is merely enduring. It makes sense in terms of Elliott's life. Life was a struggle for him and sometimes merely enduring is a victory. In the context of his life, and the song, it makes absolute sense. Why would he say something randomly about "that song"?

    • @WallaceWylie
      @WallaceWylie 5 лет назад +2

      "there's no fighting what people think they know." It's always hilarious when people make statements that they think don't apply to them. It's always those other people who think they know, never you, right? Don't worry. I'll endure.

    • @WallaceWylie
      @WallaceWylie 5 лет назад +2

      So, just so we're clear, you're absolutely certain, and that's fine, but my certitude is a problem? Can you explain why that would be, oh wise one?

    • @petersmith9530
      @petersmith9530 5 лет назад +4

      @@elliottsmithgallery701 Listen to the live version , its clearly "endures" , and in the context of the song it makes perfect sense.

    here's the foreign sun on holiday
    meeting her eyes about halfway
    a look you know it's killed many men
    and i've been all of them, inside a week
    see the man on the bar who got too drunk to speak.
    he adores that song mundane as it is
    days in a dream that wasn't his
    night's about the top of the lift
    where continents drift too far away
    to keep it together for long, on this half holiday
    from the bar they walk to place pigalle
    the taxi waved down
    goodnight, sleep well
    now it's just a step to the door
    and he wants all the more to bring her away
    out of this temporary half holiday

    • @mrdaniel511
      @mrdaniel511 4 года назад +7

      I think it's "Nights up at the top of a lift" since about doesn't make a lot of sense here.
      One more correction: "He endures that song, mundane as it is". This could work with both lyrics but you can hear him enunciate the 'n'. Also if you look at it thematically, it makes more sense. He lives his day in a dream that isn't his or in other words, lives in a thing that wasn't made for him, in a relationship that won't last more than the length of the trip. So he endures the day or the song as he calls it.
      The first line could also be: "the foreign son" - literal foreigner in Paris.

    • @ryantalley9882
      @ryantalley9882 6 лет назад +17

      Jason Pollock oh Elliott left many great songs off of albums because they didn’t quite fit the album’s sound. He was really big on that and wrote many songs for albums that didn’t make the cut. They are all beautiful

    • @sagasitches6730
      @sagasitches6730 5 лет назад +7

      it wasn't poppy enough. i think he was looking to emulate the early beatles on fig8

    • @braedenarchambault9687
      @braedenarchambault9687 3 года назад +5

      @@sagasitches6730 an attempt that he also nails imo. I think Elliott's perfectionism is a huge part of why so many great songs were cut from his records, but also why even his posthumous releases have a consistent sound and recurring themes, or even pull from the inspirations. Elliott's spin on The Beatles' sound on that record blows me away and imo I even hear parts of it in the outro on this track.
