I just got a Zoom H6 with XY and midside microphone. I also ordered a Rode NTG4+ shotgun mic. Can’t wait to take it out to the forest, the river and the sea. Field recording is such a revelation to me. It’s like photography, only with sound.
I'm glad you loved it and found it informative. For the post processing I haven't used any complicated processing. Just a lil bit of compression & I'm cutting a lil bit of low frequencies using an EQ that's it.
Your video is one of the ones I watched while considering buying the Zoom H6: I bought it recently and it's an incredible device: I recorded waves along a shoreline in Portugal recently with the inbuilt microphones (on stereo) and it sounds almost like surround sound: next stop Ireland to record nature/forests and waterfalls and I don't think I'll even need an external mic.
For now am using Zoom H1...seems F1 too is a great recorder small enuf...and the new 3m extension module Seems great strength and utility for xy module
Sir, I haven't tried the Tascam. This is my first handy recorder and in this video it was my first time recording the ambience with the Zoom H6. I cannot comment on which one would be better since I haven't tried the Tascam. Maybe you can check out some other video on RUclips to compare the results of both the recorders.
Pls suggest a microphone for mobile+ DSLR to record running train sounds like track sound+ train horns etc while on board on the train. I used various wired microphones like BOYA and wired earphone of mobile and K8 wireless microphone..etc. They record good quality voices but suppress the train sounds as they might treat it as noise and due to noise cancellation, it reduces the train track sound and train horn etc ... If I record in camera or mobile without microphone from door or window then Wind blow noise ruins the video . That's why I use microphone but it reduces the natural train sounds by 70-80% and records vocals of co talking passengers and vendors. Pls suggest few microphones ( for my mobile/ canon Power shot/ canon DSLR ) which will record my required surrounding sounds without suppression/ noise cancellation.
Thanks a lot. In this video, I've used a regular camera tripod stand for mounting the H6. If you want a similar stand, you can go for any camera tripod stand.
sound recording 2 is amazing, I noticed you used the omni capsule for that... what XLR external mics (L and R) would you use for nature sounds ? do you think AKG P420 in omni config, or Rode NTG5 (mono) or NT5 (Stereo match pair) ? or what other mics would do the job... ? Thank you , Sir
This was the first time doing field recording with this Zoom H6 microphone and I didn't have any other microphone available with me that's why I used the MS mic for this. The stereo mic bundled with the zoom would've also done a better job. If I had an option of using an external microphone I would've used the Rode NTG5 Shotgun in a stereo config.
Bhai please suggest me a recording device for recording audio for Films dialogue. Realtime. The device should have a feature to be connected to the camera. And also to save in its own memory. 🥺 Ive no experience of audio devices..... Price under 15,000/- keep things in budget as low as possible. With quality of FILM audio.
Hey, under the budget of 15,000/- Zoom H4NPro ( amzn.to/3BNJFFn ) will be the best option. You'll be able to connect it to your camera and you'll be able to record audio on an SD Card. It has a built-in stereo microphone that has a great quality and will serve your purpose. Apart from that you'll get 2 extra input options for connecting extra microphones like a boom microphone or a lavalier microphone. Since you can connect extra microphones, it makes it a future proof solution for your production. If you want to use the device to record dialogues on location, I would suggest buying a boom microphone ( amzn.to/3n46f6t ) with it for best results. If you don't have the budget for a boom mic now, you can make use of the inbuilt microphone and maybe add the boom microphone to your arsenal in the future. I hope this works.
What's the best way to set up the H4N outdoors? I am having a small speaking event (one person at a time) and was thinking of propping this up in front of them on a tripod with a windscreen to record their speeches. Would that work?
Yes that would work. Just check the levels before recording. Your signal should peak between -18db to -6db. Less than -18db is a weak signal and more than 0db can distort your signal. A healthy range is between -18 to -6db or -3db. You can even use it as a hand held microphone and point it towards the person who is speaking.
Very nice recording! were any of those sounds from the x/y mic attachment or only the round ball mic? and have you tried the shotgun mic yet on your H6 to record birds or other nature sounds?? and lastly, roughly how much time in post-production did it take you produce the final bird recording sounds segment of this vid ? Thanks a lot for any input...
Hey Don, Thanks for your appreciation ! I have used the Mid-Side Mic ( Ball Mic ) to capture the bird sounds in this video. No, I haven't tried the shotgun mic yet, but I'm planning to get it real soon. Once I get it, I'll surely post a review of it. For the bird sounds, I haven't done much post processing. Just a little bit of compression & that's it. It hardly took 5mins to process the sounds.
great video!!, i have a question, i see you got great sound, i was sondering when recording nature such as birds, water falls etc, is it best to record in surround sound, or at a direction, i recently got the zoom h2n and just starting out.( i also subbed btw:)
Hey thanks for the sub! It totally depends on what you want out of your recording. If you want to use your sounds on a film or game that will be in surround format, in that scenario recording surround is great. Most of the time stereo recording will work absolutely fine. It's just one example. It totally depends on person to person.
@@raunakbarde2923 oh wow, thanks!, i sww that the zoom h2n which i have as 2 stero settings, 1 is MS anf other is XY setting, so i will try bothing of those to see which works best, and i will also experiment with the surround sould recording. i hope i can audio recording something nice how you did, and btw great video senerey, great job👍
the ms capsule is too noisy and I wouldn't recommend it for field recording of ambience the xy capsule would have been a better choice, then again the h6 preamps are noisier than the h8 also.
In this video, it was my first time doing field recording with the zoom H6. Thank you for your suggestion though. I will keep in mind to use the XY next time. Thank you. 😊
@@raunakbarde2923 yes that's fine, it's all about trial and error if you're not a recordist to begin with. I wouldn't advise you use the MS capsule for field recordings, it's way too noisy. But I can suggest you go to micbooster.com and purchase the clippy XLR EM272 matched pair mics and they would be a day and night difference to your field recording quality.

Wow. Congratulations. I have to get a shotgun mic. You are absolutely right. Field recording is so much fun.
Awesome review with nice samples to demonstrate the capabilities of the default mic! Thank you very much! You really made me buy it :)
Thank you for the video. I purchased an H6 today and look forward to using it.
That's awesome. Congratulations. All the best for your adventures with the H6
Underrated review man! This is fantastic. Keep it up.
I would love to learn a little bit more about your post processing for the audio.
I'm glad you loved it and found it informative.
