  • The HK P30 Series is one of my favorite handguns of all time, but for many, the trigger is a deal breaker. Did Gray Guns fix the trigger - or did it need to be fixed in the first place? This video dives in comparing the specs as well as my personal opinions about the system. But ultimately - it's for you to decide what is right for you!

    I respect everyone's time - if you don't care to listen to my thoughts and opinions and JUST want to see the trigger demonstration or the trigger weights - I've added chapters/time stamps to the video so you can watch the part you want.
    I know I'm not as entertaining as Garand Thumb or Administrative Results, but I know there are others like me that have spent years debating on whether or not to modify their trigger or change out their springs. I wanted to put this out there to help YOU decide how to spend your money. There's no right or wrong - it just comes down to what you like!

    I actually like the trigger pull on my HK P30.
    It seemed hard at first, but with daily practice I've learned to really like it.

      That's kind of where I got. I dry fired to make the reset point muscle memory and shot it a few times a month for at least a year before having the trigger job done. It felt like I had to relearn the gun and just didn't like where the trigger was breaking or how light it felt. I've come to the same conclusion that the best trigger is a stock gun with a lot of rounds through it and practice.

    I just did the flat trigger and short reset kits on my P30SK and it makes such a big difference (like he said) it’s requiring some extra training to get back to my normal groups.

    IMHO any time we're fring a pistol with a trigger that works on a pivot there is going to be compromises VS a "straight -back pull" on a 1911.
    Polymer guns are virtually the same in shootablity....trigger feel...variances are so subtle. I think which polymer gun we think we shooter better deepnds more on which one has better ergonotimics. Which one feels better in hand. Rest is psychological e.g. brand name cache/prep.....which brand do we assume is betterthan the other.... If a GLock 17 feels better in your hand vs a P30 you'll shoot that gun better...
    In the nd it's just about "shooting basics" --proper stance, grip , hand -eye coordination, fleflexes....etc. :))

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  4 месяца назад

      Some are definitely better than others, but few are anything to write home about. I’ve become accustomed to duty triggers on polymer guns, but I definitely drool over a good 1911 trigger and the Beretta 92X performance feels incredible! And yes, there’s also feel vs fit. Some guns feel good, but if it doesn’t fit your hand right you’ll shoot it worse. No matter how match grade the barrel and trigger are. Comes down to preference and lots of practice.

    I prefer the flat face trigger and I use the grayguns short reset in my P30s. I have a couple USPs and HK45s that don’t have the kit and one that does and I don’t see enough to justify having it installed in the others.
    Before I started shooting 1911/2011 triggers, the stock P30 trigger was sufficient. Since then, I’ll short stroke a stock P30 without the upgrade.

    This is an excellent video. I subbed your channel. I am an Hk fan myself with multiples of almost all their handguns, including 6 P30's. I am shooting them this year in USPSA again to see if I can really get good with the stock triggers. The reset is the big challenge, especially in competition. If I were going to do any work to any of my HK's they would definitely go to Rick Holm at Lazy Wolf. I enjoyed this video, well done.

      Thanks so much! I really do think it's a training thing. Lately, I have been shooting a HK45 a lot and I would not say it has a great trigger, but it's a predictable trigger. Similar to the P30. Once you learn the gun, it starts to become muscle memory. Love to hear you're using them in competition too.

    Excellent job on the video. I'm not one to modify anything I think I would ever use for self-defense, but I've accumulated many firearms over the years, so I've modified quite a few that I've used for competition or fun at the range with good results. I would suggest to anyone with at least essential mechanical reasoning skills to consider the possibility of doing the work yourself. Often, the services of a "real" gunsmith aren't necessary, especially when you're just swapping parts around. Many people like myself find working on most modern firearms very easy and enjoyable. I can tell you from experience that there's no mystery to installing Gray Guns parts in H&K pistols, and there's pretty much zero chance I would ever pay someone else to do it for me when I can easily do it myself and have 100% confidence that it was done right. Think about it like a robust and self-sufficient man, and don't be intimidated, just as you would when choosing to own firearms and become skilled in their use in case Russian mafia goons trash your house and kill your dog.

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks! It took a long time waiting for the gunsmith to mod all of the guns, but I ultimately put the stock triggers back in along with stock firing block pin springs. I left the reset plate in the fire control assembly though. I had a friend revert them - on the last gun he had me do it myself. The trigger spring was the most difficult, but he was not a HK guy and was able to figure it out after a few minutes of just messing with installing it. It is a good feeling when you do it yourself! I've been shooting a VP9 a lot lately and then shot one of the P30 back to back with it. The reset is shorter than a stock VP9. Almost too short if you are used to shooting a striker gun. But the factory reset is just a bit too long, so you're choosing the lesser of two evils haha. When I shoot mostly hammer fired HK, these in their current form fit right in with my stock USP and stock HK45. But I will still say, if you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, it's better spent on ammo than mods. Thanks for watching!

    Awesome video - I’m looking into purchasing a P30, then later in a USP (either Tactical or Expert), and I will probably install the Gray Guns trigger (I’m a 1911 trigger snob 😜).
    From research, H&K had a certain requirement/parameters from German Law Enforcement for how the triggers operated, ie pull weight, reset distance, etc.
    For training, if you haven’t seen him - Jason @ Frogman Tactical (Former Navy Seal) should be able to help you tighten up those groupings 😬😎

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  6 месяцев назад +1

      They’re great guns! FWIW my cousin has only owned 1911 until his recent FNX45 purchase. He hated my P30 until I brought out a P30L with the GG short reset (but stock trigger) and liked it. I would install that first and see if you like it before committing to flat faced triggers.IMO if one has it, they should all have it for consistency or it will feel weird going between guns. The USP Tactical and Expert have a few minor upgrades to trigger from factory. I think they’re perfect duty triggers out of the box. The reset on a USP is much shorter than a P30.

    I was thinking hard about getting the gray gun’s trigger. Been shooting my CZ P01 and its been my edc for a good while now. Today, decided to put a few rounds through the P30 and its a big difference. My CZ’s trigger is much more crisp and has a better break, while the HK is very mushy. The P30 only has 700 rds through her so maybe the trigger will get better? I definitely need to practice more, thats for sure. It was my main carry a good while before the CZ.

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  Месяц назад +1

      Ahh my friend picked up a couple of the CZ guns and they do feel quite a bit different. Especially how you can decock them, but the hammer stays maybe a quarter cocked where any HK has a very hefty 12ish lb pull. The CZ have quite a short trigger so you may benefit from the short reset kit, but I would probably keep the factory curved trigger bar. The flat face trigger will change perceived weight, and will change the break and reset points which may or may not effect training on other guns. I found if I changed too much, it made it more difficult to transition between different models of handgun which is also why I’ve avoided the LEM triggers. Depending on your comfort level, you can DIY the install too, there are good videos online, it’s just a bit tedious. I wouldn’t change the firing pin spring that they give you though. It’s too light in my opinion. It’s very flimsy. So basically all you have to do is replace one metal plate in the hammer control assembly.

    Nice video! how do you think about VP9?

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  Год назад

      I've had a couple VP9 before, but never seem to hold onto them for very long. I think I'm going to get one to actually keep soon though... I like that they share magazines with the P30. The ergonomics are the same and sights are interchangeable! The VP9 is striker fired, so I find the trigger to be more sponge than the P30, but the weight and travel distance is just about perfect! I think Glock 19x Gen5 and Walther PDP also have good ergonomics and trigger, but I would still pick the VP9 every time for a striker gun. They also make a VP9SK and VP9L if you want multiple guns for different roles, thay all handle more or less the same! German made, great quality, and they have a rebate going on for June 2023 if you look at HK's website!

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  Год назад

      After I get more rounds on one, I will probably do a video of it too. The trigger on VP9 also gets better and better as you break it in. If you try out one that's lightly used and we'll maintained, it'll feel great!

    Whats your opinion on the safety model and lem model

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  11 месяцев назад +1

      Safety is really dependent on your comfort level. I personally like non safety models as it's one less moving part in the gun, there's no chance for it to interfere with my grip, and I prefer to have my guns off safe in double action for the first pull. I have very little time on LEM, but I have shot one before. At first I hated it, but I think if I trained on it for awhile I'd really like it. My biggest issue with it is that not all my guns are HK, but most of them are DA/SA. So even if I pick up a Beretta 92, it's not that different to change to, where as LEM is very different. Light LEM has that long distance pull of a DA pull but the weight of SA. It's like a pound pull until the wall where it breaks. It's definitely not for new shooters though, because if you have a tenancy to slap the trigger, on LEM, it'll really really show.

    I got a hk p2k absolutely love the gun but the reset on the trigger is just awful compared to my other cheaper guns like the Beretta 96 which has at least 10k round in it from law enforcement to the p38. Even the stoeger cougar has a better reset than the hk. The only other thing i am changing is the bigger mag release since it throws my grip off

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  Месяц назад

      The mag release takes a little getting used to, but I prefer it over anything else now! Oddly enough I feel like my usp and hk45c have the most predictable reset. It seems like everything they made since the early 2000s has a longer reset though. I assume that was a request for duty use as civilian market is an afterthought to them.

    You haven’t actually used a LTT P30 have you? It’s much more than just an optics cut and Grayguns parts.
    I agree triggers can be a very personal choice though.
    Also developing your skills is not just practice. If you keep practicing bad habits you won’t improve.

    • @WalterRitchey
      @WalterRitchey  Год назад +2

      Full disclosure, I have not shot a LTT. I know a lot goes into the coating of the internals and some other hand work. I guess part of my argument I'm trying to make is of the cost is justified. I know how a lot of guys are - they try to shortcut training by modifying their guns. I'd like to encourage people to train more rather than spending their money on upgrades.
      IMO the Gray Guns parts were designed with LEM in mind and I would be really interested in trying a LTT LEM, but I don't think LEM is for everyone. Where as I feel like a P30 V3 would be an excellent firearm for any gun owner to add to their collection.

    • @brandonfisher4436
      @brandonfisher4436 Год назад +1

      @@WalterRitchey I’m not sure what your experience is but grayguns designed the parts maybe with the same goal in mind but not just the LEM in mind. The LEM works differently than the V3 DA/SA.
      I agree people try to shortcut training by modifications and no it’s not a magic fix. But modifications in a skilled persons hands can make a big difference.
      As far as DA/SA guns being good for anyone I could not disagree more. Hand size, strength and overall physical ability play a part in how well people shoot certain guns. Me personally I have a hard time reaching the trigger on most DA/SA guns to be able to press the trigger smoothly. The trigger work on the LTT pistols can seriously help with that. PSmoother not necessarily lighter on trigger work. But, it really comes down to personal preference and application.
      I appreciate you flying the HK flag.

    Great video, thanks for the review of the P30 series.
    I just purchased a factory new P30LEM with the factory night sights. I will be sending mine into Lagdon to polish the trigger, install the short reset, because it takes 50% of trigger swing to reset. As far as the amount of trigger pull it has factory, I haven't measured it, but since it's an LEM I assume it's going to be between 3.5 and 4 which is perfect for my everyday carry. I'm also going to be having them do an RMR cut so I can install the new Holosun HS 507 Comp whenever it becomes a stock item. There are only companies in the US who will cut a P30 slide. Langdon, SAS Tactical and Lazy wolf guns.
    C&H Precision won't touch it due to the lack of slide material. In my research and emailing all three, Langdon is your best option when it comes to this at $329 that also includes Cerakote of slide. langdontactical.com/custom-gun-work-ltt-rdo-cut-for-p30-series/
