I was wondering about that. A&M scores a touchdown against Vanderbilt, then they sing about how much they hate Texas?? That's some rivalry there! Too bad we can't get Texas in the SEC. Guess it's more important for UT to be somewhere that they can feel more elite than the other schools in the conference. If they moved to the SEC they wouldn't stand out as much and that'd be too much like being a second class citizen for them.

First, since Texas A&M was founded first, we are “THE” actual university of Texas. Thus, the label “tu” for that other school in Austin. But the term “t-sip” came from the old west days. College Station was just an Army outpost - way out on the frontier. Life was very rough and tumbly, so you can imagine the type of characters that existed out here (in College Station). This place wasn’t even a town back then. It was just an outpost (or ‘Station’). So the people out here were know to drink a lot of whiskey and get into brawls. They were mostly uncivilized and rugged cowboys, frontiersmen and tough military men. Austin, on the other hand, was considered to be more civilized and proper. The men were of a more genteel nature and therefore better mannered than the plains men around the College Station area. So, instead of whiskey, which was an improper and reserved for the ruffian (considered as devil water), Austin gentlemen drank tea. Perhaps real or not, they were often characterized as even properly sipping it while in public. So even before the Aggies slaughtered their mascot and served it to them at that famous BBQ event, we have referred to tu fans as t-sips (short for tea sips). Hope that helps!
As a Texas fan, I honestly love their weird obsession with us. It makes me laugh every time. The only song we have about them goes like this: "Pooooor Aggggieeess" and we have sung it after each of the 76 times we beat them, especially their last Big 12 game and their last SWC game :D
I’m a Clemson fan and saw miniature version of this when they played us in Death Valley. The amount of fans doing it was probably 20 times less than this but it was still incredible
As an Auburn man I may be biased in thinking that we have the best fight songs and everything but man every time I see the aggies doing that sway and singing along, that’s something special right there! War Damn
I’m a Sooner fan, and I went to the game at Texas A&M in 2010 back when A&M was a Big 12 school. Despite we lost to them 34-19, seeing this schools tradition was so breathtaking and they definitely have some of the most awesome fans too. Bottom line, this tradition takes the cake!!
Class of 2019 here - I was there in the student section for this game. This game and the Tennessee game we won on the Armani Watts interception were some of the best memories I have of Aggie football. Gig 'em!
LSU fan/Louisiana-Lafayette alum here. I have nothing but respect to this incredible fanbase. I had the opportunity to be at the ULL-Texas A&M football game in 2017 with the UL marching band. I knew the game would be a blowout, but with a fan-base as dedicated as those Aggies, that stadium was completely packed. They *easily* had 100,000+ fans at their home stadium for a Sun Belt vs SEC match-up. I was very impressed to see something like that. Much respect to y'all once again! my mom was a majorette in the Longhorn Band in the late '40s. And she always said no matter how good the UT team was, the Aggies would store everything up all season for Thanksgiving Day and throw everything including the kitchen sink at the Longhorns. LOL.. I sent my daughter (her granddaughter) to A&M!
I usually standing in the tunnel thats in the corner that shows here. You feel the ground rumble. It is intense and outside the stadium you hear it for a good distance
This is awesome. College football in the South and in Texas has an intensity unmatched in any other sport in North America. The only thing I've seen in person that is comparable is European and South American soccer. I watched an Argentine league Match between Rosario Central and Estudiantes de Rio Plata and the sound of 50,000 fans singing the same song, at the top of their lungs, all un unison is a thrilling, unforgettable experience! Seeing the whole stadium sway during the Aggie War Hymn must be the same!

rubidiumandlithium it goes beyond football, I can agree with that. Two different types of Texans, Ags or Tsips. You can pretty much know which one they are before you meet them 75% of the time. Ags are your typical Texans people normally think of when outsiders think of Texas. Tsips are faux-Texans city slickers, just about everything opposite of Texas.
As an Aggie, I have to admit that the Razorback game gets pretty intense. I think there’s some real friction there as well. But it’s always a good game and way too many times for my liking, it turns out to be a real nail biter.

A&M was the first public University in Texas, yet we were always somehow in the shadow of tu. That’s where they wanted us to stay and they wanted us to play by their rules. So as an old Ag, that fight song means something different to me. Texas A&M is now the largest and premier university in this state. No doubt about this. The eyes of Texas are no longer on them. Just hearing them say otherwise sounds like hell! They know this and it makes them squirm all the more. And that makes me sing the Aggie War Hymn all that much louder - whether we play those ba5tards or not. Sweet Victory Indeed.
So why keep singing about Texas when you left them for the SEC? If you leave your rival for a new conference and you don't play anymore is it really a rivalry anymore?

Sorry I'm just getting back on youtube. I can't tell you as well as someone born into an Aggie family (I traveled across the country there for my masters), but I can give you the gist. Basically, TAMC started back in 1876. The Morrill land-grant act was passed earlier in 1861 (each state has 2 -- traditionally white and traditionally black; TAMU being the traditionally white -- TAMU is now the nation's only land, sea, and space grant university). Later (5 years), the state decided to open up the school in Austin, but in doing so they tried to get rid of A&M. Texas AGRICULTURE & MECHANICS University, also a very well-known and established military school with a large corps of cadets (4,000-ish to this day), was essentially under fire. Alumni and a lot of people jumped in to defend the school, and eventually the school got through and stayed open. Now.. this is dandy and all, BUT despite being the state's large land-grant (handling extension services -- Prairie View A&M being the other, smaller), t.u. (or UT) receives, and I don't know the exact numbers, about twice the state funding that TAMU does. However, TAMU is still thriving thanks to the 1,000,000+ members of the Association of Former Students. The rivalry stems from the 1800's when they tried to get the Aggies shut down, to politics, to present day state funding, to sports, to anything else... but the Aggies always stand strong. Whoop! Hope that helps a little. Like I said, I'm not the best or most qualified, but that's a general rundown.

I agree - it is great for people to share something positive that they have in common, especially in these times when the country is tearing itself apart at the seams. I was just trying to give a HISTORIC Bruin comeback its moment. But don't be so thin-skinned - I am sure you have heard MUCH worse about the Aggies from others.
