I ordered 'Sovereign of the Seas' by John McKay 1637 today. After completion of the hull I was about to start with the masts, rigging and sails on my Sergal Sovereign. I was pretty desperate not knowing the 'historic' way to do that and then I found this book. i am a happy man!

Superbe, when i started making shipmodels made out of wood i was advised to buy books with the basics of shipbuilding and i did. First book was german "das grosze Buch der Schiffstypen", a lot of books are added to that. It helped me to scratchbuild som modells. When i am scratchbuilding i mostly use the 1 : 75 for details. If i want to have more info i often visit "the Rotterdam Maritime museum library. ( iI am from the Netherlands) . I saw your builds and they are stunning. I wish more women would have the guts to start doing this. Most of the women that visit my house are mostly concidering my models to be "dustcatchers".

Hi Olha. Thanks for this overwiev. Great video as usual. A friend of mine is currently building the SotS and confirms that this book will be of the utmost interest to the shipmodelers and marine historians. At the very beginning of the video I see the monograph of the cutter Le Cerf by Jean Boudriot, ANCRE Publishing, France. Many books of the French Naval Archeology series are now available in English. I am a shipmodeler and I'm collaborating with ANCRE as Italian/French translator and proofreader. Didier Berti (the boss) has your address. I asked him to send you his updated English catalogue.
From time to time I watch the TV show Україна має талант on RUclips. I confirm. Ukraine got talent... and you're the best !

      Thank you very much!
I'm building this cutter myself - and now I'm trying to understand why the table with weapons in the book is different from the drawings! Maybe the book describes a real ship, and the drawings are made from a museum model ... I do not know French at all and therefore it is very difficult to read this monograph. I will be very grateful to you for the English translation!

@@OlhaBatchvarov Le Cerf was armed with 8 pdr (chaser) and 6 pdr long guns (for each calibre the French Navy had short and long guns).
I measured the guns on plans V and VI and compared with period plans * (Establishment 1778, length measured from the cascabel to the muzzle). Then I converted the duodecimal measurements to metric system and reduced the results to 1/48 scale.
The plans V and VI are reliable. Forget the table in the book. Scale is 1/24.
      Reminder. French pied / foot = 324,8 mm ; pouce / inch = 27,07 mm ; ligne = 2,26 mm
If you want more information or translation, I'm at your disposal. I asked ANCRE to give you my mail address. Too many spammers watch RUclips !

Would that be the Nicholas Barnewall, 1st Viscount Barnewall of Kingsland in the Irish peerage? Created in 1646? King Charles I may not have had the brilliance and maritime knowledge - genius, really - of his son, His Majesty King Charles II, but certainly was far more intelligent and capable than people generally credit him.

An absolutely horrible book. See, for example, the review on Amazon by the late Frank Fox, the pre-eminent naval historian of ships of this era. McKay has incorrectly position the decks (they should not have falls), the Sovereign had a round tuck, not a square tuck stern, the radius of McKay's stem is wrong, his sternpost is too high, the tiller is incorrectly located, the sweeps (radii) of the bends are incorrect, and more.

@@OlhaBatchvarov Hi, Olha. Thank you for your comment. Actually, I have been researching the Sovereign for about 10 years. During this time, I was fortunate enough to work with the late Frank Fox, who I mentioned in my post. I have completed my own plans now. I have written up a description of them, but I doubt it will be published. One publisher has already described it is "too academic." Nevertheless, I have finally started building this ship. I have really just starter. I am only working on tapering the keel.
