PRI 2019: SCAT Crankshafts And Connecting Rods Fix Issues In LS Engines
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- SCAT recognizes the issues in LS V8s and the push-pull of performance versus longevity. The company offers high-end crankshafts and connecting rods that strike a good balance for gearheads, and discusses what that entails in our interview from PRI 2019.

The fact that he had the number and the receptionist name, he’s top shelf material top me 👍🏻
Ran scat rods and crank in my dragster for 2 years. Made 800 horse and everything looked mint after 300 runs... I was impressed
@@mewrongwayKOCXF daaaamn lol that's getting it done!
I used and sold Scat cranks back in the 70’s. VW stroker cranks.
Worked like a charm.
I love scat. Good bang for your buck. I’ve had a 350, 406. and a 383 stroker with scat crank and rods. I had a snout brake off of the 383. But it was a cheep build. Lasted many years in a racecar. Been very impressed.
Only problem with a ls is they’re to reliable you have to add a failure point. Beats mopar every time!
I have Scat Q-Lite H beams in my 416 LS and they are 570 grams compared to the competition’s 630 plus gram H beams.
love Scat products.
I love Scat . Cant beat em !
The world is not all electric yet.
Glad we are getting the C8 in Australia Holden needs a HALO car.
Keep up the good work guys we love LS based engines in Australia.
We do things a bit different to our cousins in the US.
A lot of L98 L77 and L76 GM engines as well as the LS3.
We have had the LS7 and the LS9 engines.
If these engines were not good why did Ford just build a new 7.3 litre V8 virtually the same as an LS engine 😉😉😉😉
What's that "new" 7.3ltr by ford going into?
I was under the impression, the LS crank was the best part of the rotating assy.??
This guy is a hoot.
I like this guy. Explains it so good that even I" get it!!!!!!!!.
just sayin
SCATS quality control appears to be subpar.
My previous SCAT cranks looked like these in this video.
My latest Scat crankshaft looked like crap.
It had not been deburred and was full of gouges from a grinder.
Check out my latest video about how to fix a SCAT crank that got past quality control😎
The part he doesn't tell you is GM went to scat to make the LS work in the first place.
And Ford went to Roush Yates, and Dodge went to Buddy Airington.
My 4hp Tecumseh Flathead needs a billet rod . 🤔😂👍🏻
I've been road racing an LT1 Camaro for many years, when I stroked the engine the first time I used a Scat crank, less than 3 months it broke into 3 pieces, did some research, found it was made in China, than found a Company in Wisconsin, called Howards Racing Components, bought there whole rotating assembly, all made in USA, 6" rods JE pistons, been racing this 600 horse monster for 10 years now, runs as good as the day I built it, use Royal Purple, make sure and 4 bolt main the block=bullet proof.
Awesome. Glad to hear it. I just asked a guy I work with and he said these Scats are made in China.
Junk. It's always junk.
Thanks for the info. Working on a gen 2 lt1 myself. Pretty sure it's a 2 bolt though.
I saw this video and was like wow, 10 to 15 years ago scat was crap. If you wanted good it was lunati or Crower and everyone know scat was China cast crap. I was like wow funny how things change, saw you post and then I said well guess not. Lol
@@electrolytics I worked at scat, and the cranks are Chinese forgings then becomes "Made In USA " owners a cunt
The company may be from the U.S. but where are those cores being made... thats the issue I have been having with cranks for years, I refuse to gamble big bucks in an engine on a Chinese crank.
You hit the nail on the head, the first time I stroked my LT1 I used a Scat crank, not knowing it was cast in China, in less than 3 months it was in 3 pieces, did some research and found Howards Racing Components, rotating assembly made from scratch in Wisconsin, been road racing this engine for ten years now, no problem.

"China" ... REALLY ??
FABRICATE... Say it aint so, just went on there web page almost empty, tried to look up Callies because they were making and machining these cranks together not much better, may be out of business, after my experience I will never use a China crank again, not even in my Briggs & Stratton, so the next time I need a crank I will find an American made one I hope.
Before the imports, aftermarket crankshafts were prohibitively expensive and quite rare. American manufacturers refused to compete on price and just kept them as expensive as they could. I have two imports and a Bryant now (second-hand).
@@greeceuranusputin "refuse"? No. They build to spec and charge for it. China cuts corners starting with the raw material or blank. Many other costs are also either subsidized (by China and/or the US) or don't exist to include shipping and waster material disposal.
Unfortunately, sly lobbying, backstabbing congress, and dumb consumers put US based businesses in a position to bankrupt themselves or export everything. There are other factors to be sure, such as how much does a middle-man really deserve, but this is the short of the long.
do they know what scat stands for?
I never quite understood the success of a company that names their product SCAT (a word for Crap)
I have a Chinese crankshaft made by CAT (California Auto Transpeed) That really is excellent...Nodular iron. Can't find 'em around anymore. But SCAT? (? Southern California Auto Transpeed ?) I prefer to stay away from crap.
Is their slogan "you got scatted on"?
Just wondering why if you go to the trouble of developing a new (high performance) crankshaft - you don't change it to a single or flat plane crankshaft ?
You'd need a matching cam, plus flat plane cranks don't do well in large American V8's (lots of vibrations with larger stroke).
@@383mazda Thanks 383mazda for your comments. However, I suggest that the flat plane crankshaft is emerging as the next feature of V8 engine development to produce still more rpm and horse-power. This is evidenced by the Ford Aluminator and Chev Corvette C8 engines; both of which are ultra-high performance and feature flat plane cranks. The AMG 6.3 liter V8 has had a flat plane crankshaft since 2008.
I would expect that highly experienced and capable crankshaft manufacturers such as SCAT would be well capable of firstly designing and secondly manufacturing single plane crankshafts, not withstanding the inherent vibration you mention. I just wonder if SCAT are developing or are considering developing singe plane crankshafts for after-market V8 application ?
Anything new for us lt1 guys?
Lots of good stuff out there for us LT1 guys, I ordered this 93 2 months before they went into production, been road racing it for over 26 years now, I put this 383 together 10 years ago race it all summer every summer, if you plan to stroke the engine you must 4 bolt main the block and call Competition Products and use Howards Racing Components Crank and rods, I use JE Pistons, all made in USA, the first stroker I built I used a Scat crank, not knowing it was made in China, it lasted less than 3 months, broke into 3 pieces.
Effin pounding drums made me hit the brakes hard on this video.
Look up Sloppymechanics. Stock Gen 4 5.3/6.0 make 1000 plus rear wheel HP reliabialy.
99% of people will NEVER make more power than stock LS internals can handle. Total waist unless you are going to make mega power.
You are correct.
Yeah just gotta know what your doing. Forged do pistons help give one a larger tuning window. The stronger ring land is worth it. The gen 3 rods start getting dicy around 700. Gen 4 rods are good for 1000+. Crank is good for as much as the stock block will take.
Imho when you crest 1000rwhp... it’s time to start looking at aftermarket block options
Its definetely not unwise to upgrade them though. Thats still a lot of strain on them.
I love sloppy mechanics but not everyone is doing dyno pulls or burnouts on back roads.
@@mikewrench_ Or running 8.80's with a stock bottom end 4.8 for under $8K for the whole car. Piss your money away if it makes you feel good.
That old man got eyes like deebo
Trying to fix the Design flaws in the LS did that to him.LOL.
That might fix one problem with the LS , But it dont change that stupid Sound of the LS. What New for the Bowtie? The Good Chevy Block?
What is wrong with the sound of the LS
@@mrmysterious6006 The Same thing thats wrong with you ,if you Dont know the Difference. Its a Whiner. Got It?
The SBC is old news. I know I have pissed away mega bucks to see stock Gen 4 LS motors wipe the floor with over priced SBC stuff. I'm no hater just know the truth. Most people that are serious about a SBC do a 4-7 swap cam and change the sound anyway.
A $3k pair of SBC heads flow less than a stock LS truck head. No thanks.
@@LaserLuther Good for you Pal, with almost 600ci of Big Block , I dont Care about your love of a LS.when you raise your Hood there still aint Nothing to see but Ugly you have to put Turbos or Procharge it to have Anything to look at when you raise the Hood . They Still Suck. Got It?
@@curtiscamaro5926 Sounds like you have small man's syndrome. If you are referring to your plastic bumper Camaro with its rad 15" 80's wheels having 600 cubes. I would say what a waist because that car is clearly a 13.50 car on a good day. 😂🤣
Have a good day big guy!
Not a good video. Lots of panning across crank shafts. Not much about the manufacturing. I guess they don't want you to see all the Chinese employees.
WTH . No real info on ford . Just ls bullshit again . So what's the real deal on the coyote cranks or the 4.6 stuff .
Tony Spadafino Thats because they’re gonna sell 20 LS cranks for every one Ford modular crank. Simple economics.
Wayne Swicegood probably even more than that. Most just change rods and pistons in the coyote. Factory crank is pretty good in the coyote. The short deck height makes for crappy ratios on longer strokes.
Ford? What is that?
I agree, 5min of LS and O yeah we do fords and dodges as well.
@@mewrongwayKOCXF Chevy has two major recall on their trucks right now. One for the abs unit and one for a battery cable that was causing engine bay fires. It's effects 900,000 vehicles so I don't know we're your getting your info from. Every manufacturer is is having recalls in the past years. Like the airbags that every car company was using.
