Their leader, John Howard Hermann (Max Baker), explains that they were all conned by the studios and that, consequently, the sum they’re demanding for Baird’s release is not a ransom but rather a “payback”.

What’s the Hail, Caesar! movie about?
Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is head of physical production at Capitol, one of the most famous American film studios of the time. He is in charge of solving all the problems inherent to each of their films. A job that knows neither schedules nor routine. In a single day, he has to deal with the sensitivities of the different religious communities, in order to validate their adaptation of the Bible in Technicolor, as well as those of the very precious star director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes), who only moderately appreciates the fact that he has been given the young hope of the Western as the headliner of his next psychological drama. He settles the mess that the studio's artists have a way of getting themselves into. In addition to rescuing a starlet from the clutches of the police, or saving the reputation and career of DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson), the queen of nautical ballet, Eddie Mannix will have to elucidate the shady dealings of tap-dancing virtuoso, Burt Gurney (Channing Tatum). On top of that, he has to deal with a tiny group of political activists who, in the middle of shooting the famous biblical blockbuster AVE CÉSAR, demand a ransom for the kidnapping of the Studio's biggest star, Baird Whitlok (George Clooney). All this while trying to curb the journalistic ardor of the two twins and enemy columnists, Thora and Thessaly Thacker (Tilda Swinton). The day promises to be eventful.
