I catch myself leaving my 4th comment here in this vid. Trust me, I’m not “that guy” and rarely chime in fir anybody”me too” false motivation/recognition. But this vid stirs up my memories from the 80s and early 90s when I learned these lessons myself, most all of them the hard way, and unfortunately most all of them after having been told by people that had themselves learn the hard way… And tried very hard to keep me from having to reinvent the wheel… But boneheaded and young and arrogant and full of hubris, I thought I knew far more then than I now realize that I ever will now in this entire lifetime And the reason why I chime in on this comment, is because of the comment about the fight going south and somebody pulling a blade, and bleeding… In classes I’ve given as a adult and an elder while still in service (retired from boots in 2020) I consistently reiterate that one point, then unless you absolutely positively you what you were doing, no your weapon, nor the entire weapon system package, to include how the weapon relates to you and your training and your positioning and everything there is to know about how to employ set a weapon, that if you introduced your weapon in the absence of all of that… Which is highly likely the case for most people… What’s the statistics tell everyone at the end of the day and after all the after action data has been compiled to figure out what went right or wrong, there’s a high likelihood that you delivered the weapon that hurt you or took your life to the fight in which it was employed against you I’ve got a scar under my chin right at the jugular it’s pretty hard to hide, and even though that I can grow a beard out, it won’t ever grow over that scar tissue, and it’s pretty hard to hide what the intended target of that blade was when they score tissue was created almost 30 years ago While I didn’t deliver the blade to the scene of that epic fuck up, I did massively escalate the situation by bringing next level tools into a disagreement that would’ve done just fine without them, and looking back it’s kind a hard to blame the other individual who hit me with a razor based 45° bend carpet knife that came insanely close to ending my life, because in every scenario I run in my head… I would’ve done the same thing he did and I’ve been given the same situation presented to me That’s easy to say now in retrospect, and it’s academic, but at the time society was smart enough to know that my brain was not in the Blaney genius that I thought it was, and I such they told me I was too young to buy a beer… … Not gonna lie, society was probably right. Throughout my career I’ve known some seriously skilled and incredibly train fighters who are immensely capable, and I’ve been present to witness in real time and no shit for real come at the capabilities of a few of these people, but with the exception of the one person who has a TV personality and has a reason to come across the way that he does, to a man everyone of these quiet professionals and everyone of these seriously seasons combat sportsman, when asked directly about preparing for fights or getting in the middle zone to dominate a fight, to a single man of all of these guys, every single one of them gives the same advice which is “don’t be in the fight“ and is unpopular as it may be, you will also often hear “you can work out at the dojo, you can get range time and become proficient in weapons, or you can join the track team“ Obviously paraphrasing, but every one of these cable guys has got something to the effect of the track team quote, which is a way of saying it if you can run the fuck away then do so But if you can’t you keep him at arms length so that he cannot reach you But if you can’t do that, and you can get inside, you need to know how to make that stop and then remove that grip so that you can once again leave the situation And only after all of that is completed, and it’s clear that you’re going to have hands on you and you’re gonna have your hands on him, that is the moment when you understand where they say it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war, and to be a dangerous man as possible, but the type of chooses anything but conflict Someone who chooses no conflict as the only method of getting through life is effective until such time that the conflict comes to you and you’re not prepared for it, in which case you’re just useless and a victim I’m going for the ride If you are capable of domination and capable of maximum violence, but control this capability and choose other than violence, it’s very difficult to fuck with you Think about the movie “the gambler“ and John Goodman talking to Mark Wahlberg about gambling, and prudent thinking, when he uses the example given for the famous “fuck you money“ speech in the movie Incredibly capable skill sets and lethal arts, to me, is the same exact concept as what goodness talking about with the “fuck you money“ speech I see that as being the exact same idea, if you really boil it down I’m 47, I’m just about at that capability point where I don’t have any fear, but I have no hubris to share, I can take care of myself, but I sure as hell never go searching for it… And on the money side, I sacrificed my entire career and all the way up through this age so by the time I hit 50 I would have pretty much that “fuck you money“ at the level described in that movie, not the level describe to the Silicon Valley people I grew up around… I’ll never have that and I don’t want that… But I’ve got what John Goodman was discussing in that movie, just enough to provide me with the rest of my life’s worth of not being beholden to anyone else, in between those two things, I now have the capability to be a stable rock for the people in my family that needs to building And that last statement is why this is such a long post, which I didn’t start out to be… But it’s kind of important if you’re actually listening to what I’m saying and trying to understand… The stability that I can provide as an almost 50-year-old man they may look to you for guidance, is that I am not beholden and I cannot be swayed or forced or coerced, but I don’t live my life in such a way as to do that to others and I can be soft-spoken mellow and I can definitely embody what it means to be… … The warrior in a garden I’ll be just fine to spend the rest of my life in the garden, if I should be so lucky If not… I did this one with a prepaid card, so I’ll be OK there too (Did I make any sense? Use voice to text while driving for this so I’m sure it’s discombobulated… I hope my point got across)

The fight begins before the actual physical part. I have thought my way out of what would have been fights or bad situations many times. Avoiding a fight is an art in itself.
Best way to survive a street fight is to avoid it in the first place. If you cannot get out of it verbally or physically for some reason, 30 seconds of the most violence you can muster, ideally aiming to disable their ability to chase after you then put as much distance between you and the attacker.
That's a good point, and it points to a deeper understanding that most people miss when they look at training videos or different videos of styles of fighting. What they miss is this.. Context Context - everything happens in a context! Almost any style you see has useful individual techniques. But they don't necessarily "end" a conflict by defeating an opponent or leaving them unconscious on the ground. In a self-defense scenario, not a competition, the idea is to give you an opportunity to survive or escape and attack. What's missing in the Detroit whatever's videos, is context and practice - his techniques are not bad in and of themselves, but they only work in certain context and at certain moments. They also require hours and hours of practice to master them AND make them practical in various situations. Unfortunately he never talks about that.
This is very true, it also helps to Guage whether going through with the fight is worth it or not. In 2008 I had an epiphany when a former Golden Gloves boxer grabbed me by the collar and hauled me right up to his face to scream at me. I thought about what the fallout from my next action would cause. He was a coworker and had a family like me. I didn't want both of us to lose our jobs and send him to the ER just to satisfy my ego and rage. I would probably have momentary satisfaction and elation and the feeling of justification for my actions. It still wouldn't compensate for the hardships that it would have caused. In the end after 5 minutes of walking around all pissed off thinking about the next move, I decided to walk away and work in a different area of the Jobsite. We weren't friends so that didn't matter. However I learned from that experience that I do think the majority of physical altercations can be avoided by situational awareness and cognitive thinking about more than the next 5 minutes. Besides, the golden rule still applies, and I would rather someone give me the benefit of the doubt instead of the trip to the hospital in the ambulance.
@@taharmeziani6903 they don’t just punch you in the face, they’ll grab you, hold you, pull your hair. As good as boxing is, street fights are dirty and unfair and it’s hard to prepare for it because you just don’t know what a person will do.

You really are never prepared for this sort of thing and in my case there weren’t even weapons involved.
Never imagine yourself in a fair fight. Most fights are started by the same troublemakers, and they're always in a group of friends looking for an opportunity to hit you while you're not looking or using numbers to their advantage.

The best self defense is awareness. Because not all violence happens on a dark street in Chicago. You can get robbed or beaten to death in broad daylight in any city anywhere. And the best offense is to be as violent as you can be without risking injury to yourself or others. In summary: evade entirely when possible or neutralize with swift, decisive action when necessary.

The whole point of practicing is that it comes to you like water from a stream. I've been in enough fights to know its over In a flash. But I've also been in enough fights where some of the things I learned in martial arts have been used to great effect. But if I didn't have the tools from learning them. If it's a guy, do the old grab and twist. Or if they are armed, go for the soft spots i.e eyes stomach The aim is to incapacitate them or to scare them, so pain is the goal. (FBI I'm not a murderer don't stalk me)
That's the thing, in a street fight, there's nothing dirty when it comes to moves. If your best bet to not get fucked up is to push the guy down and stomp his balls into a paste, you better fuckin do it or run.

When I did karate, every belt had to learn different self-defense forms. We knew that it wouldn't go that way in real life, but the form itself was a sequence to get you to think about what you would do and actually move your body. There was a specific way to do them, really only mattered for testing, but my instructor always had us think about and walk through the motions and understand why we did some techniques. Someone comes at you with a bat or knife, you may never go through that practiced form, but you may end up using those techniques to defend yourself.

No you don't get it. The rush of adrenaline in a real situation Is not comparable with any training. The whole point of training is to practice so much until you have muscle memory. So when you're freaking out you would still throw a good punch because that's the only way your body can punch. So basically martial arts are useful when you're a master with many years of experience and your body is on autopilot. Anything less than that they are useless. The way you get composure is by experience, getting beaten up, fighting, being violent to other etc. All of that will wash away your feeling, fears and humanity. 100% truth. I've been in street fight where dude pulled a knife on me. Until it was pure fight on fists I kept fighting. But when I saw a knife I knew there is only one reasonable option - run. So I did. I don't feel like coward. I feel that guy was real coward, because he knew he could lose. He knew that he is out of options and was desperate to win. He pulled knife out of fear of losing. His emotions were controlling him and my mind was clear and there still was some voice of reason in me. I the end I ended with bleeding nose, chipped tooth and black eye, but I'm still alive and there is nothing more important than that.

Damn! That came out of nowhere dude..... @Joseph-tl5yu very true! I was never "trained" in anyway to fight but I was taught some important techniques. 1, use your legs! They're far stronger than fists. 2, hit em where it hurts and make that hit count because you might not get another one! And most importantly 3, keep moving! The second you lock your position it can all be over in a second...keep jumping around like a Lil bean, crouch and tumble out the way if you have too...just don't stop moving and keep your body fluid.

I catch myself leaving my 4th comment here in this vid.
Trust me, I’m not “that guy” and rarely chime in fir anybody”me too” false motivation/recognition. But this vid stirs up my memories from the 80s and early 90s when I learned these lessons myself, most all of them the hard way, and unfortunately most all of them after having been told by people that had themselves learn the hard way… And tried very hard to keep me from having to reinvent the wheel… But boneheaded and young and arrogant and full of hubris, I thought I knew far more then than I now realize that I ever will now in this entire lifetime
And the reason why I chime in on this comment, is because of the comment about the fight going south and somebody pulling a blade, and bleeding…
In classes I’ve given as a adult and an elder while still in service (retired from boots in 2020) I consistently reiterate that one point, then unless you absolutely positively you what you were doing, no your weapon, nor the entire weapon system package, to include how the weapon relates to you and your training and your positioning and everything there is to know about how to employ set a weapon, that if you introduced your weapon in the absence of all of that… Which is highly likely the case for most people… What’s the statistics tell everyone at the end of the day and after all the after action data has been compiled to figure out what went right or wrong, there’s a high likelihood that you delivered the weapon that hurt you or took your life to the fight in which it was employed against you
I’ve got a scar under my chin right at the jugular it’s pretty hard to hide, and even though that I can grow a beard out, it won’t ever grow over that scar tissue, and it’s pretty hard to hide what the intended target of that blade was when they score tissue was created almost 30 years ago
While I didn’t deliver the blade to the scene of that epic fuck up, I did massively escalate the situation by bringing next level tools into a disagreement that would’ve done just fine without them, and looking back it’s kind a hard to blame the other individual who hit me with a razor based 45° bend carpet knife that came insanely close to ending my life, because in every scenario I run in my head… I would’ve done the same thing he did and I’ve been given the same situation presented to me
That’s easy to say now in retrospect, and it’s academic, but at the time society was smart enough to know that my brain was not in the Blaney genius that I thought it was, and I such they told me I was too young to buy a beer…
… Not gonna lie, society was probably right.
Throughout my career I’ve known some seriously skilled and incredibly train fighters who are immensely capable, and I’ve been present to witness in real time and no shit for real come at the capabilities of a few of these people, but with the exception of the one person who has a TV personality and has a reason to come across the way that he does, to a man everyone of these quiet professionals and everyone of these seriously seasons combat sportsman, when asked directly about preparing for fights or getting in the middle zone to dominate a fight, to a single man of all of these guys, every single one of them gives the same advice which is “don’t be in the fight“ and is unpopular as it may be, you will also often hear “you can work out at the dojo, you can get range time and become proficient in weapons, or you can join the track team“
Obviously paraphrasing, but every one of these cable guys has got something to the effect of the track team quote, which is a way of saying it if you can run the fuck away then do so
But if you can’t you keep him at arms length so that he cannot reach you
But if you can’t do that, and you can get inside, you need to know how to make that stop and then remove that grip so that you can once again leave the situation
And only after all of that is completed, and it’s clear that you’re going to have hands on you and you’re gonna have your hands on him, that is the moment when you understand where they say it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war, and to be a dangerous man as possible, but the type of chooses anything but conflict
Someone who chooses no conflict as the only method of getting through life is effective until such time that the conflict comes to you and you’re not prepared for it, in which case you’re just useless and a victim I’m going for the ride
If you are capable of domination and capable of maximum violence, but control this capability and choose other than violence, it’s very difficult to fuck with you
Think about the movie “the gambler“ and John Goodman talking to Mark Wahlberg about gambling, and prudent thinking, when he uses the example given for the famous “fuck you money“ speech in the movie
Incredibly capable skill sets and lethal arts, to me, is the same exact concept as what goodness talking about with the “fuck you money“ speech
I see that as being the exact same idea, if you really boil it down
I’m 47, I’m just about at that capability point where I don’t have any fear, but I have no hubris to share, I can take care of myself, but I sure as hell never go searching for it… And on the money side, I sacrificed my entire career and all the way up through this age so by the time I hit 50 I would have pretty much that “fuck you money“ at the level described in that movie, not the level describe to the Silicon Valley people I grew up around… I’ll never have that and I don’t want that… But I’ve got what John Goodman was discussing in that movie, just enough to provide me with the rest of my life’s worth of not being beholden to anyone else, in between those two things, I now have the capability to be a stable rock for the people in my family that needs to building
And that last statement is why this is such a long post, which I didn’t start out to be… But it’s kind of important if you’re actually listening to what I’m saying and trying to understand… The stability that I can provide as an almost 50-year-old man they may look to you for guidance, is that I am not beholden and I cannot be swayed or forced or coerced, but I don’t live my life in such a way as to do that to others and I can be soft-spoken mellow and I can definitely embody what it means to be…

The fight begins before the actual physical part. I have thought my way out of what would have been fights or bad situations many times. Avoiding a fight is an art in itself.
Very good, young Grasshoppah 🙏
Best way to survive a street fight is to avoid it in the first place. If you cannot get out of it verbally or physically for some reason, 30 seconds of the most violence you can muster, ideally aiming to disable their ability to chase after you then put as much distance between you and the attacker.
That's a good point, and it points to a deeper understanding that most people miss when they look at training videos or different videos of styles of fighting. What they miss is this.. Context
Context - everything happens in a context!

But I've also been in enough fights where some of the things I learned in martial arts have been used to great effect. But if I didn't have the tools from learning them. Best self defence is avoiding getting in a situation where you need to defend yourself.
When someone else is tryna kill you becuase you’ll do the same if they don’t it’s like nothing you’ll ever experiance. You might think you know that feeling but you don’t. It’s not anger it’s pure desperation and survival
I have been training boxing for a few years, I spar regularly and have had a few fights over the years.
However 6 months ago I was in a life and death situation and my mom and another familiar was there as well. All I could thing was that I couldn't get knocked out or they were going to get killed.
The guy in question had a psychotic breakdown and was fighting wildly, bitting and shit. I manage to stop him until the police came for him.
So the learning from this is that no matter how much you train, the real thing is very different to a controlled environment.
Street fights are the worst kind. You never know what they know or how far they will go. Best option is to not even get into one . Run if you can, but if not, you better be prepared for any possible thing to happen to you and you better hope you can handle yourself and watch yourself. It could be your life. 6 feet under or in prison for manslaughter. Just avoid it at all cost. In my experience it is not worth it to show your a tough guy etc.

@@J972M yep my point exactly. I already know what I can do but unless I'm in a corner with no possibility of getting out without violence then fine but I fight for my life as there's no rules on the streets. Just run away is the always the best and first option.
The most important thing you take from martial arts is composure, and implementing that in a street fight will drastically change the outcome of the fight
Pretty much. And knowledge on how to throw and take punches and kicks. Apart from that they're never fair fights
I dont mean any offense and i say this most respectfully.......id like to see you maintain composure when the opponent pulls out a pistol or a shotgun....REAL fear is not smtg martial arts can teach u....unless u got balls of steel, u WILL cower in front of a firearm....and even if ur brave enough to get into a stance to dodge a bullet ...well....its a bullet... there's like only 5% chance u dodge the bullet....even if an amateur is holding the gun
@@youknowwhoss5849 why are you kicking % like you have any idea what you are talking about. Nobody mentioned dodging bullets lmao this ain't matrix dweeb
There's no composed "warrior" without traumas and without being scarred by it.
