  • @EyeShotFirst

    Dave brought so much to the band. I think people pass him off as just a frontman, but he gave Van Halen a lot of what set them apart. He gave Van Halen a lot of flavor that was gone in the era of Hagar. I won't pass off Sammy, he was a great singer, and they had some good tunes, but he was a rock singer and Van Halen was a rock band. Roth was like a radio that kept changing channels. Was he gonna give you Robert Plant or Louis Prima?...how about both. He gave Van Halen their color. That's why Van Halen wasn't just a rock band. They were their own thing.

    • @Iknowthelaw13
      @Iknowthelaw13 Год назад

      They were like a spiritual confirmation. The same feeling of euphoria and invincibility you get when your favorite football team wins a playoff game. They had such attitude because their hearts were in it. With Hagar it was a sanitized product made to sell.

    I've seen videos of Eddie telling how he supposedly did the tape thing all by himself and he bought the reflector at a truck stop. One of these two were doing some creative history writing. Only one way to find out, ask Alex and/or Mike. I don't know if Mike would have been there at that time but Alex must have been. We need to get to bottom of this.

    • @VortekStarling
      @VortekStarling 2 года назад +1

      @@shtdaprdtr How do you know it was black? Supposedly, Eddie bought the body and neck separately, the body was a "second' because it had a knot in it. So in theory it wouldn't have been painted at all, just plain wood. That would mean that Dave was indeed talking out his ass. He took the opportunity of Eddie not being around to refute it.

    • @shtdaprdtr
      @shtdaprdtr 2 года назад +2

      @@VortekStarling what? What the hell are you talking about..were talking about the color it was before the stripes. Yes he bought it bare wood with a knot inside the lower body horn. He added a fender bridge and neckplate and an es335 paf humbucker. He sprayed it black and played gigs with a black strat and an ibanez destroyer he painted white. When he painted it black the paint pooled in the knot and caused a drip which wasn't sanded out which you can see under all the layers of paint in the frankenstein. Then around 77 he taped it with gaffers tape and pinstripe tape...not the tape Dave's talking about, and sprayed the white on top...then when the tapes removed thats how you achieve the stripes. And btw...the "painted" white destroyer was cut up..painted silver, tape applied, then painted maroon/ metallic red and became the shark guitar.

    Dave was riffing pure fiction in this video, admittedly very imaginative and entertaining, but pure fiction nonetheless. The Frankenstrat didn't start as a white Strat, it started as a plain wood body that Eddie bought at the factory, it was a factory second because it had a knot in it. Eddie did all the tape and paint work himself. There was never any blue art tape involved, Dave totally made it up. Eddie also bought the reflectors himself at the truck stop. Dave can riff pure bs for hours straight, it's a rare talent.

Ed bought the body as a factory second - meaning it had a knot in it and they were just going to toss it. Ed assembled it as a bare wood guitar first. He then painted it black. Ed cut the pickguard himself and smoothed the rough edges with a soldering iron. He then striped it with various widths of gaffers tape, some of which is still stuck on the guitar, and painted the body white. Removing the tape revealed a black striped guitar- the one pictured on the first VH album. A tour or so later he taped it up again and painted it with Schwin Bicycle red - culminating in the iconic design we see on his frankenstrat today.

    I thought the guitar striping idea came from a punk band called Dil whose guitarist was doing that before Ed

    You gotta start doing the podcasts again Dave! Please!! I love you man🧡 and I thank you for all the great music you have created that has brought joy to my life since I was a 10 year old hearing Jump for the first time on my little 9volt transistor am radio. Fittingly, as I was listening to this I was sipping coffee out of my EVH Frankenstein mug. Tears welling up. RIP Edward.
    For everyone else that sees this check out the Professor of Rock video Adam Reader put up this morning about The Cradle Will Rock.

    I love to listen to Dave and I’m a huge VH fan. But I am having a hard time with his claim to the stripes. That is just my opinion.

    So Dave is claiming that he came up with the idea for the striped graphics on Eddie's guitar? I don't know about that. Sounds like he's trying to take credit for everything.

      Yeah, even mentions the wrong starting color. Original color was all black. Ed mentions this in an interview.

      @@hinjurock70 He didn't, Eddie said he doesn't remember where he got the idea, but he did it himself.
