Jackson Katz: Violence against women-it's a men's issue
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 май 2013
- Domestic violence and sexual abuse are often called "women's issues." But in this bold, blunt talk, Jackson Katz points out that these are intrinsically men's issues -- and shows how these violent behaviors are tied to definitions of manhood. A clarion call for us all -- women and men -- to call out unacceptable behavior and be leaders of change.

This is so important. Some years ago I became aware of my own misogyny and began the process of unlearning it. And over the years since I’ve challenged my male friends and family members when they’ve said or supported sexist comments or ideas and at first it was uncomfortable for them, but over time I think they began to really appreciate it and our conversations have really matured and so have our friendships.
Hi Imhotep! I think is so great you became aware of it and de-constructed yourself and your environment! Wanted to know, if its okay for you, how did this change process started? how so you became aware and what motivated you to change? It may help others going through that pathway too, or wanting to help loved ones to improve in this regard.
Hope you are having a great day :)
That's very sweet
I am very lucky to have never learned misogyny. I wasn't raised by anyone, I had no friends until highschool when I met my best friend who was really popular, which made me really popular and I then gained a huge friend group, and this friend group was very special in that it was comprised of so many different personalities, that there wasn't a hint of judgement towards anyone. so there was no pressure to act a certain way. so i never learned those negative behaviors.
Smart man.
This is the change I'm waiting for. Great that you could detect it and that you're actively working on it like that. That gives me hope in the dark times.

After I saw this vid (as a man) I was really baffled by the fact that it got so many thumbs down .... I don't get why
Because those are from men who cannot own up to the acts men and perpetrates on women. It’s a men issue! Some men take issues with growing up and owning up to what their gender do.

I absolutely love this! Jackson Katz nails it. Violence is a male issue. Focus should be shifted. We need to redefine what it means to be a "man" or maleness. I wish we could clone this man.
Women often get blamed for sexual violence towards them which fuels the idea that it’s not men’s issue. This is age old problem. It’s narcissistic abuse, like a nail in the coffin. It’s time for men to acknowledge their responsibility. I’m a CSA and SA survivor myself. I’ve never dated one man who did not become violent in some way or another and I was blamed for it. “No” has to be taken as a final answer. Blaming your victim doesn’t free you from your responsibility and actions.
I’m here because of Sarah Everard.

Its not a women or mens issue, its a Human Issue. We are creating a problem by separating ourselves into groups. Men and women need each other, hence this so called issue is not either man or woman but a human problem.
Yes, Human Men quite often beat or kill Human Women. It's time that Human People tried to make an effort to stop it rather than forever argue over who did what to who.
***** I should think there's an awful lot of over simplification on RUclips - it's in the nature of the site.
I still stand by my belief that people, male and female, should really make an effort to stop this behaviour - rather than constantly bicker over who's the worst.
I get the impression that most people commenting are more interested in 'gender blame' than on getting to the bottom of the issues here.
Coercive and controlling behaviours are not discussed or highlighted enough in our society. Domestic violence is a learned intentional behaviour - it can be made worse by the use of drugs and alcohol, but they are not the cause (though they can be used as an excuse).
The perpetrators are desperate to control and dominate their partner, if children get in the way they can be victims too.
Domestic violence can create mental illness in the victims.
The issue should be much more widely understood.
*****
Trouble is, it's so hard to define, here's a site that may be of interest. I found it after weeks of searching what my wife was experiencing at work, this was the only site that nailed it. the page here is specific to domestic, but the site is quite extensive...

I'm disappointed by the number of dislikes. This is an excellent and perfectly reasonable talk, but perhaps some viewers are threatened by its accuracy.

I absolutely LOVE this guy! I try to live my life by that 'bystander' model. It IS necessary to call people on their bullshit, whether it's sexism, racism, any form of hate speech.
It is called a "women's issue" only when it is a campaign to end "VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN".
If we start talking about, "Let's end Domestic Violence!", then we can start talking about it being an issue for all of us. Segregation in language abuses people. He even cites this himself.
Domestic violence isn't an issue for men.
+Chief Why do you believe that? Were you lied to? Or did you just assume that's how things are?
40% of Domestic Violence victims are Men.
If Men call 911, they are far more likely to have the Cops jump on them anyway. (Because those Cops have the same prejudicial ideas that you do.)
Men stay silent. They are afraid to ask for help. They are mocked for "letting" a Woman abuse them. (But, if they ever hit back, even once...?)
There are no shelters for Men. Many shelters won't take Men at all. There is no state-subsidized counseling available for Men from abusive situations.
You know what I call that? Sexism.
Why don't wa call it "Let's end violent men" ?

In the past I have spoken up and many friends have changed their attitudes and ways and this is heartening. Sometimes though, as with many people commenting here it is hopeless It's great that you do that though, I wish more people had the strength to confront their friends or step in when they felt something was wrong.
We men need to acknowledge that there are certain problems which are primarily our fault even if we are not directly responsible for them. The first step in understanding stuff like this is to acknowledge our privilege.
I agree 100%, and also very well argued indeed.
thank you for posting this video
I do not think he was suggesting that there are no violent women.I am an ER nurse and i have seen men who have been abused / beaten up by a woman. The fact that the focus of his talk was on the male role models and leaders that are needed to help curb the violence does not suggest there is not violence on both sides.you are so correct Raymond, the verbal bashing needs to also be looked at seriously. These things being said the majority of victims of violence in my beds were attacked by males.
This is why I'll never apologize or be ashamed for being a straight dude.
He is a revolutionary that has a message I will carry on for the betterment of our humanity. His message is a balanced recognition of everyone to achieve truly civilized actualization. Sadly, it looks like some of the women in this comment section are defending the male privilege because they may be as much of the issue as the men. The dominance and power of the dominant group must listen and watch more often. Our time is not the era of barbarism anymore. We have the technology to enhance our lives, and ultimately, society!
+Jay Draper thank you. love you. He IS absolutely a revolutionary. He is what i sense a real man is who takes a stand. He stands for men And boys who are abused just as much as he stands for women and girls who are abused.
the system is sick, so the question, "What is up with men' is a good question because even if a man isn't being violent, he may be being silent. And i don't mean you n the other good guys on this forum. :)

@john thehumanist,
Hogwash! You’re apparently a non-humanist. More like a *BLACK PILLER* misogynist androsupremacist TERRORIST.
Simply bringing up and lecturing on this *en masse social issue* in order to humanise men and boys, to re-educate away from all sorts of abuse types that target ALL sexes and gender identities, globally, but ESPECIALLY women and girls, to the point you *Dark Triads and Cluster-Bs* must be outed as you’ve chosen to NOT CARE and have actively perpetuated abuse against womxn, girls and children *so much* that it’s been a PANDEMIC for several DECADES and *worsens by the day.* It is not suggesting a “gynocentric” society at ALL.
Take your wannabe cult leader self out of such conversations IF you’re going to not assist toward positive change for ALL, meaning away from hatred and abuse of privilege toward EQUITY. Not gynosupremacy, just EQUITY. If that’s too much to expect and request, you’re ungrateful, dangerously unrealistic and insane.
Your lower comment, propagandising yet again, falsely claiming this lecture is a form of “misandry” is a bold faced LIE.
You need to *leave with your misogynistic propaganda* because plenty of viewers and listeners are learning - by the DAY - about you hateful, violent, harmful, criminal, traumatising, cowardly, weak, cowardly, ABUSIVE, DISORDERED b*stards!
Warren Farrell (Myth of Male Power) has been has been shouted down several times by women's groups. I think he presents a fair look at many negative issues men face and how these issues may promote male violence. We raise our daughters differently than our sons. We don't teach our daughters to defend themselves against violence, while teaching (dehumanizing) our sons to be violent.
Why?
Maybe you males embrace violence more than women. Sure looks that way looking around the world in ALL cultures.
To embrace women men must be prepared to protect them by any means. Since this is still a very physical dangerous world women much prefer powerful men over wimps. And men suffer by (more often than women) being victims of violence.

@@johnthehumanist2333 Why wouldn't it happen? After all, the ideas we have about binary gender are only 200-50 years old (depending on the specifics). Within all human history that's a very short time.
Nobody mentioned sexuality? But I guess you might think of the "distinctly different genders are needed for sexual attraction" fallacy. Tell me, have you ever met a man who is attracted to every single woman he meets? I mean every single one, no matter her age or looks. I certainly haven't! Most people are only attracted to people they find attractive :) For me personally, a combination of masculine and feminine features is much more attractive than perfectly aligning with the binary gender norms.
That gets tiring for me to hear as well. Especially with all the time and energy i invest, as a male role model in my community, working towards ending domestic violence. But just think, who is more likely to put an end to at least the men's side of domestic violence (which is the most frequently occurring). Us, we as men, and that's why I stand up for this and take action towards reducing violence. I don't spend my time whining that male's are victimized in a feminist society (not to say u do).

It's a common conception that speech can't be harmful. We know that's actually not the case, though. I mean, I love the idea of free speech, but when you let certain parties have a voice ('cough'Trump/Hitler'cough') you sincerely open the door for these kinds of insidious ideas creeping up on people and causing them to take action - irreparable action sometimes, so yeah, I do think some form of intervention to keep these toxic anti-equality and similar parties from spewing their hatred so freely might be a good idea, wouldn't you agree?
Thank you for continuing the conversation I need the practice.
A schema describes an organized pattern of thought and/or behavior.
And language patterns drive our patterns of thought and behavior.
It is quite well accepted that everything we do has the most often subconscious intention of meeting our needs behind it. not just in some cases in 100% of cases. And yes it is a static language that describes what people are and the idea of retributive justice that creates our violence.
My Father always walked away or corrected men, even as a soldier in WW11. My Mother also a soldier WW11, faught for women's rights.
I was a victim of sexual harassment and discrimination due to my racial color and gender in high school. I had to deal with that burden all through high school and it was not easy because I felt like my best friends were acting like devils, but high school is a place to meet new people and not a place to create hell. Domestic violence against women and men has to stop in our society, especially men acting violence towards young men like the Penn State University example.
If you find it necessary to judge me, please judge me as an individual.

Spasmolytic Advice: Look at the changes I nearly immediately made to my comment to address it at the correct person before you even reacted to it.
When he first mentioned how it was a leadership issue, where men have to learn techniques to be able to talk out about this stuff without it being socially unacceptable... really hit a note.
I tend to get tired (and feel super preachy) trying to educate my friends about this stuff, it's too much work to change literally everyone around you when you grow up in these social circles, so i opted to just let most of my old friendships fizzle out. But these ppl are just someone else's problem now :-/
Hopefully though as time went on you were able to find friendships that were more on your level. Having the support of a likeminded group of friends can definitely make it easier to call stuff like this out.
I respect this guy for speaking out as a guy. The courage it would have taken to do this would have been huge- we need to empower not just women, but everyone on this planet, so that everyone can speak out against things that are wrong in society.

Attending a Domestic Abuse Advocacy course and I’m the only male there. Only sharing because, whatever puts men off, it’s so worthwhile learning how to help someone who may need support.
What puts men off is the fact that blame is shared when it's a minority committing these atrocities. It's the same thing as white Americans being unable to see the point of the Black lives matter movement. If you make everyone a monster then people will be unwilling to listen.

He's talking about a social problem in this country from a broader point if view. Changes are made by a collection of people, just like positive changes this country has made in the past...from a broader perspective. He's right. Domestic violence and violence against children is out of controller. I agree with him, you can't change anything if people keep looking the other way. Change can start at the dinner table, or over drinks, or a conversation among peers but it needs to start somewhere.
i completely agree. Heck, Katz even says that when the word "gender" is brought up, people often think it only applies to women, PROBABLY because every time topics of domestic violence is brought up, it comes packaged with a sole-focus on women with male victims getting no, or just a brief mention. These are important topics that need to be discussed with good detail, both male and female victims need to be discussed, and male and female abusers as well, if we are to get anywhere.

Shouldn't he just say men committing violence rather than specifically against women? In all honesty men are the cause of the majority of violence in the world. Against women and men... mostly men. The domestic violence in our society is probably mostly against women but the rest of the violence, gang violence and fights in the streets and bars, is male on male. 90% of our prison populations are men. Men are filling up our prisons at an alarming rate all due to their incredible violence (I'm not talking about bullshit drug charges). Why are we failing our men so badly? Why are we raising such violent beasts that die so young and go to jail so often. There really is a problem in our society with men being violent, but this kind of divisive talk doesn't really get at that problem, it makes it a feminist issue (although he does say a men's issue) by making it about gender violence when the problem with men isn't that they hit women too often... it's that they hit people too often.
He directly addresses people like you at 7:22.
He said that what we should put into practice is holding leaders accountable for remarks which glorify violence, like we have come to hold leaders accountable who make antisemitic remarks, and that we should also do this in our peer groups. I think that's pretty practical.

This topic is more relevant now than ever. So much ignored these days. There are more protections in place for gay/trans etc but no protections for women in domestic abuse situations
Best video I've seen in a while
The comment section totally proves his point.
haha that is so funny. its is all around you. i was invited for coffee with a friend yesterday. he described the situations his wife puts him as comply or suffer.
i see it in my daily living, its embedded into our language and way of thinking.
Also, I was wondering how language should change, concretely; what kind of words/phrasings do you think should be avoided; I just don't really think I understand what you mean without a concrete example of 'bad language' vs. 'good language'.
I have been binge watching male feminists and similar talking heads and this man seems so genuine and real. You can tell he actually cares about this.
Talking heads?
all the videos of women discussing these issues, unless from an anti-feminist point of view, have so many more negative comments and dislikes. the fact that this time its a man speaking and the response is so different, says something about us as a society. About how we don't take women seriously, and how offended men get when a women tells them the truth, but will only ever listen if its another man saying the same thing. i see this time and time again.
David Archer that is because our society sees women as "too weak" to do any harm, and therefore if she hits someone its no big deal because she is just a woman who does not have the strength a man does and therefore he just has to suck it up and "be a man". this is a result of gender stereotypes, and this mindset is why women can often get away with that. If we as a culture work on less pressure for violence and strength in men, and learn to take women seriously the way we do with men, then we can work towards fixing this problem and almost all of the things discussed in this video, because this is the root problem.
538659 f sense when
you have it back wards who laughs at crotch kicks and dreams of beat unfaithful or said the wrong thing. who Bragg's about every one being afraid of their power. and first thing they ask would you die for me
Wow. Literally NO DEAD AIR. He barreled through that speech like a freight train.
misandrist vid! shocking!
@C Fah and neo marxism/communism is not the answer, and I will SAY whatever I like as an INDIVIDUAL,ok collectivist drone!
AND socialism is just as bigoted as ultra traditionalism,RIGHT androcentric LEFT gynocentric,ok child!😡
I concur with you wholeheartedly!
Was surprised to see such backlash on this video :(
how deep is the hole you live in?
@@johnthehumanist2333 Way too deep for dandined to climb out.
excellent talk!!! amazing
Agus Lourdes who do you think a boy abused by women would hear this talk or the fact its' called violence against Women.
@C Fah men`s violence against women is rare look at feminist own numbers and time scales . but also population. few thousands out of tens of millions an entire year
Thank you for an insightful, meaningful presentation. I hope these ideas will be the norm in the future. I wish there were some action steps at the end that everyone can do once the talks are over, for those who are inspired for positive change.
gynocentrism should not be the norm!
when i lose faith in men completely, i come back to this video for hope. Its SAD how unfamiliar those questions are, asking why men do this, why men hurt children, why aren't more people asking that?? family annihilation has been on the rise for years and no one is talking about it, why is no one talking about it? Why are we talking about TikTok bans in Congress but not the violence against women? The violence stemming directly from men.
I was a criminal defense lawyer for a quarter of a century, and, in my experience in both urban and rural areas, the overwhelming majority of perpetrators of violence and sexual abuse were men. I'm talking over 90% of my caseload. I don't have the statistics on prison populations in front of me, but they prove the same point. There are vastly more male than female violent offenders serving time. This speaker is talking about a culture of male violence that is real and needs to be changed.
Amazing :")
