    I had the honour of working with one of the mechanics that assembled the original car for the movie. Rob Orchard was his name. He relayed a lot of stories about his time on set, including a few details about the original XB coupe.
    The car itself was the cheapest most beaten up vehicle that they could find. It was a high miler with not too much life left in it, by all accounts. The supercharger unit was past its serviceable life and was purchased from a drag racer in the car park at Calder Park raceway for very little money. From memory, the housing of the unit was actually cracked.
    The super charger served no function on the original movie vehicle. It was very haphazardly fastened to the top of the air cleaner lid. The car was fuelled by the original carby which was still supplied air via the original air filter set up. The drive to the unit was by way of a modified AC pulley which was engaged by the AC switch in the vehicle. Rob claimed that the installation was that poorly executed that he would break out into a sweat every time that a shot was taken of the blower being brought into life. He couldn't believe that it lasted the entire shoot.
    Reportedly, the engine in the original vehicle was well past its use by date. It was both "tappety" and smokey and according to Rob it "wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding".
    I hope you guys read this. I've got a few stories of the Kawasakis up my sleeve, too.
    By the way, Rob went on to be a highly accomplished aeronautical mechanic.

      That rice pudding qoute is probably the best thing I have read in ages. Thank you for sharing, this is fantastic. It's amazing how cobbled together some of the most famous movie cars actually were! Rushed production, low budgets, inexperienced builders, so many reasons. a lot of them were built by guys who grew up reading popular mechanics and b&w hot rod magazines, so the techniques tended to be the same. Hell, the Burton Batmobile was basically just a drag car with a fiberglass cover bolted on top.

    When I first saw Mad Max, we all know there was no interweb to let us know what the cars were. I freaked out one day as I rode my 10 speed past a AMX. To me it had all the right looks. I still think it would make a very fine Max car given a super charger.

      Most of us here had a similar experience. At least until the early 90's when the web cropped up and we all found www.madmaxmovies.com and there a bunch of like minded individuals and loads of information. Some folks figured a 71 Mustang Mach 1, some the AMX, Some the Torino, etc. The bulk of people did not get to find out what it really was until the web came along. I think the car looking so much like an American Muscle Car, but not like any people could say for sure, added greatly to the whole "Futuristic" element of the films.

      I'm skeptical that that set up would work reliably.
      Blowers are generally used when power is desired with no concern for efficiency, e.g. drag racing. Turbos would work better if you care about efficiency. A turbo doesn't have the same parasitic loss at low throttle.

    • @droolguy
      @droolguy 3 года назад +1

       @charlesvan13 Blower parasitic loss comes from the weight and drag of the rotating mass. If it is disconnected via a clutch, it doesn't exist.
      Blowers are, in fact, far more efficient than a N/A engine when tuned for it, while turbo's are more efficient they are also far more complicated.

    70 & 71 Torino's can be mocked up to look exactly like it but with a left drive steering wheel. It's because Ford's Aussie Falcon is essentially the same car. The grill and rear end are slightly different but Max's interceptor had a different front clip on it anyway. I would never hack up a 70-71 Torino with an original, matched numbers 429 Cobra Jet engine but a roller with some rust and front end damage? Yeah, it'd be worth it.

    • @MadMaxCars
      @MadMaxCars  3 года назад +1

      It is generally agreed (though debated) among the Mad Max hobby and Aussie Falcon enthusiasts that the 70-71 Torino sports roof is the closest to the XB Falcon in general silhouette of all USA cars. They can indeed be built into very respectable Interceptor "Tribute" replicas. They both even do ride on the Mustang/Torino/Comet/Montego chassis of the era. However they share absolutely no common sheet metal, and if you park them next to each other the differences become quite obvious. The wheelbase is even somewhat different. There is a handful of photos online of Aussie Falcons parked next to the 70-71 Torino, with a 71 Mustang etc, showing how different they actually are. There is no doubt that there is a lot of the design cues shared with the Torino, as well as other American Muscle cars (like the hood being very similar to the 71 Mach 1 Mustang). The Ford Australia design department did an amazing job of caring on the Falcon name, which in its final round of production was indeed a rebadged Torino formal roof in the USA. I have seen guys using Torino GT and other desirable trim levels for their Mad Max tribute builds, but admittedly not a CJ that I have seen. They usually do pick appropriately rough examples.

    Stunning work. How much do both the restored falcons and full turnkey cars usually cost the customer?

    • @MadMaxCars
      @MadMaxCars  Год назад +1

      Cost on either would vary greatly depending on a myriad of factors, not the least of which (in the case of an Interceptor replica build especially) would be choices the client makes about what the want in the build (engine, trans, brakes, suspension etc) as well as overall condition of the car to start with etc. If you are interested in getting a car and would like some detailed information the team at www.madmaxcars.com can help you in depth. For a more general overview of costs there is a classified section right at the top of the Navigation bar on that website with several listings which might give you a little peek at costs.
