I love this guy. I love his honesty. I have owned a freelander1 td4 for several years. I've learnt shed loads from this even though working outside on rough ground with a tarp spread out. I'm 62 and landy's in particular this type are an absolute pain in the butt?. Thankyou Bodg and legg, you keep me inspired and going.
Just a quick tip for Freelander owners:- Once the shoes are on, put the handbrake on 2 clicks before you adjust the shoes at the back. Once you've adjusted the shoes, and the drums are a nice snug fit, put the wheels back on, release the handbrake, and with the engine running, press the brake pedal , hard, 20 to thirty times in succession so that the adjusters set up the best position for the shoes and also centre the shoes in the hub. Keep up the good work mate, all the best from Bavaria!
Pete Stanley hi mate that's a good tip I do it slightly differently but I think I'll try that the next time thanks a lot for watching don't forget to get your hands dirty
Hello Pete, just been reading your view on the freelander I've just done exactly what you said. But the piston on the left side keeps popping out of the cylinder break shoe stops it falling completely out. It's a brand new cylinder 2 days ago any thoughts on the problem. Many thanks Mike storey from Bridlington
Nick Baker thanks a lot mate a lot of people say that I always like to keep everything in to show people what happens in the real world it's not Hollywood were in LOL
Land Rover advises to press the pedal about 30 times to seat the shoes also leave the handbrake on 1 click so that you have manoeuvring when you put the drum on. Sounds good to me 👍 Ash from Scotland 🏴
Just done mine. You're right about the pliers and the swearing when it comes to springs, LOL. An extra set of hands is useful too! Thanks for a very helpful (and amusing) video.
Snap-on still makes the brake spring pliers and I've been using them since 1974 and they make drum brake jobs a breeze. The pointed end of the pliers works great on riveted brake linings b/c you just put the pointed end in the rivet hole but bonded pads it digs into so you either use the ones with the pad or use the Lisle 44800 Heavy Duty & Lisle 45100 light Duty Brake Spring Tools and you'll like them. They'll make drum brake jobs a breeze for the springs not on an anchor/post. For the parking brake cable brake shoe attachment try the Lisle 44210. They make brake jobs so much easier and you will be smiling. Drum brakes were on most of the cars when I started out and disc brakes were only on the front. For the brake adjustment get the Snap-On Blue Point YA2780 and adjust it to the drum, lock it and then adjust the shoes to it, back off a click or two and put the drums on...done it @ a minute. You can thank me later but I guarantee you'll be so happy!!
Good tip about the bolt...I have a bolt like that on one of my cars, next time I will use loctite. Personally I like to verify that the adjusters are going to automatically adjust by leveraging the shoes apart or whatever it does to auto adjust. Often the little leavers for adjustment need to be bent slightly to grab properly. On my own cars I dont bother to perfect adjusting the shoes and would rather let the auto adjusters do their thing. However if going straight to the MOT i do what you did.
Thank you so much for a great explanation and tutorial with everything explained so clearly your vids are superb!! keep them coming you really make it easier for the diyer to attempt to take on these jobs with your vids 👍👍
40:30 I made a new retaining pin using a nail. cut the nail to 35mm length, drilled a suitable hole in a piece of 2.5mm thick plate, put the end of the nail in the hole, tig welded the end of the nail to the back side of the plate. grind the plate round so it's neat, push the nail head through the back plate and fit original retaining clip. better than the original pin and somewhat better than using a nut and bolt which I didn't have anyway.
Unior makes drum brake spring pliers. They look similar to needle nosed pliers so you can get into tight places with them. They are really good and make your life much easier. And they don't require you to leverage it off the brake pad, which could be a problem if you've just put in the new ones. I can see the problem with the ones you have since they are so bulky.
Leon, just had to adjust my hand brake for the third time in under 2000 miles. Followed the Haynes manual but haven't had much luck..(it even says it's a one 'spanner' difficulty/which has made me look a right c@ck) but today I copied your method and 'Hey Presto' it works(well of course it did!!) only took me 15 minutes after another failed Haynes attempt...cheers, SORTED!!!
I tried your method of getting the two set screws out and it didnt work -I think a safer method is to use an impact driver ,but make sure you use the exact correct Phillips bit also I suspect my impact driver can reverse its direction on its own so make sure it hasnt done that or youwill just be tighening the screw not loosening it .But thanks for posting the vid -its much appreciated.
I have a set of "American" brake spring pliers but rarely use them. They suck to reinstall springs as they scrape off shoe material as shown at 46:00. I much prefer just man-handling the spring in with a flathead screwdriver and pair of vice-grips.
Ian Holland hi mate I hear what you're saying and yes they can scratch a bit of alright but still very handy there's another set and looking at with a rubber pad on the end so these definitely will not do any damage thanks for watching thanks for the comment get your hands dirty
