For me emulation is a dream come true from when I was a kid. As a kid I got a bootleg 32 in one game cartridge for my nes and I dreamed of the day in the future where I would have all the nes library on such a bootleg cartridge for a future system. Later when my friend got a PC I was amazed that he had multiple games on his hard drive including Street Fighter 2 so then I dreamed about having a PC in the future with a ton of Arcade games to play at the tip of my fingers. Emulation fulfills those fantasies I had as a child. The difference between an emulated game and the real thing is far smaller than the difference between say a game on the SNES and the same game on the Genesis which is more than acceptable for me.
This is just my opinion.. and this is coming from someone that has been playing games on the computer through roms and emulators for years. Yes it’s easier to just download to a computer and just play.. however it’s not the same as playing on the original console. Speaking for myself I love both. One one hand you have the nostalgia factor, on the other you have a digital version that will be preserved.. AND roms open up the original consoles to fan made games and game mods that get to be played on the original systems that aren’t restricted to a computers limits.. so in reality you can have double the amount of games with having roms AND the original hardware it was intended for
In other words the case for original hardware is more emotional and psychological than anything apparent in how it plays and runs, minor hiccups in emulation (that I've rarely observed) notwithstanding.
That really depends. Emulation to me runs better and can have higher framerates if a game on og console had issues when it was designed. I mean even on a android phone the amount of customization is incredible for emulators and the amount
I've been living in Japan for nearly 7 years but got into retro collecting only last year here. I love the experience of original hardware and controllers for the nostalgia and original intended experience but I have also modded my Dreamcast and PS2 to play off the SD card and HDD. When I emulated The Getaway on PCSX2 the cutscenes were so choppy that I couldn't play it. The PS2 with Free McBoot plays it flawlessly. So I'm a mix of both too but mod the systems to play games in a more convenient manner but on the original console and controller.
Hardware is just eye candy. Like why did I obtain the super gameboy on my snes to play gameboy games at home on a crt tv. I guess we just like to collect what made us happy or now were adults we can kinda afford those stuff we didn't have. Very easy to get suck into that rabbit hole.
Yeah doesn’t happen with emulation you would need your android phone or pc to literally die itself for that save files are like bulletproof too on android compared to og console I went back to a 2 year old save of Pokémon it was fine that would never happen on a real cartridge you would need to replace the battery for the save file
I want to play the original animal crossing on my gamecube retrocompatible wii but it's the first time I get gamecube stuff so the price includes at least one gcn controller, a memory card and the game itself. For someone on a budget like me it's very hard to get those things, but I don't want to emulate a game for a platform I kind of already have (even tho I emulate some gba games on my phone). (sorry for the bad English but it's not my native language) By the way when I watched this video I was expecting you to have at least some hundred thousand subscribers, for now take mine. I did the rubbing alcohol thing as well. They make replacment lids for your nes that are indestigushable from original for around $10 on ebay. Even a purist can't tell unless you tell them. But hey, it could be our little secret 😅. Happy gaming !
I prefer to play in original, for some hard reasons for me like: An emulator never copy the game in exactly 100%, the sounds lots of time are weird, if is a gameboy emulator, is not the same a PC than a physycal gameboy in your Hands in your bed, so i feel nothing like original experience.
Spoken well, nothing beats playing gba in your room late at night. and there are always flaws with emulation. Even if hardware costs more, it's still worth it.

Oof that’s a bummer. I knew hand sanitizer is really good for taking off ink but I guess alcohol in general will do the same. One game I’m kicking myself for not getting was Pokémon Conquest. As a fan of the advance wars and fire emblem games it seemed pretty good.

Original hardware for me. I still have all my old game consoles. I have my older consoles like ps2, Wii and game cube set up to my CRT, my gen 7 consoles set up to my PlayStation Simulview 24 inch 1080p monitor and my current gen consoles set up to my 4k TV. Not everything transfers over with remasters on newer consoles or emulators. Those things are convenient if that's all you have but it's not the best way to play those games. It's not just about nostalgia. I was so happy to go into the ps3 game store and find I was still able to access the original version of life is strange after seeing how poorly the game was remastered for newer consoles. Original is definitely the way to go. When it comes to games like silent hill 2, silent hill 3, Haunting Ground, Rule Of Rose, Forbidden Siren, Clock tower 3, the PS2 would always be my go to and GTA San Andreas for that matter.
Emulation Out of the hundreds of games across my PS and Nintendo libraries I can maybe think of 5 games that are better on original hardware. HD texture packs and mods to unlock framerate opened up a new world
For me, since I started playing on original hardware again I started enjoying these games again. Playing on a PC with thousands of roms available sucks the soul and fun out of these games. It just doesn't feel right.
RPG’s? Emulation, old software does not hold up, childhood games like ninja gaiden, Batman nes I had to beat those bad boys on original software? Maybe to avoid temptation for savestates? Always risks for the game freezing though…some systems have not aged well, PS, PS2, those days are gone
I like both original hardware and emulation. I never had an Atari ST, so when i got me the emulator (Steem), it was like a gate to a world i never saw when i was a teenager, really awesome. I have an original N64, but only 26 games. Being able to play all the others i never had on Project64 is also awesome. Same goes for the gameboy. I have a PSP (with mod) and can play games i never had for my original gameboy, and most work 100% accurate. So if you have both you have the maximum fun. 😎
I got the atari 2600+ compared to my modded 7800 original console. The 2600+ is unplayable and unresponsive due to its on board emulator. That's my opinion sorry if it differs from yours.
Emulation, without question. Don’t waste your time or money on hardware. You’ll look around one day and realize you were stupid for buying it all. You’ll likely lose a ton of money when you inevitably sell, as well.
I have original hardware and emulators on many devices. Original hardware has so many issues. Most consoles I have bought have issues that need to be fixed by some soldering wizard. I just bought a Game gear with an lcd screen mod and while it looks way better than the original screen it needs to be repaired and I can't find anyone who is willing to do it. On top of that I have cheap chinese handhelds with better screens than the mod on the GG. I also have a GG with the original screen that has been recapped and it looks horrible. Running GG in an emulator works way better. I can reduce sprite flicker, games run faster and feel more responsive as a result. Similar issues with the nes, and Gameboy. The only exception is the 3D emulators that don't work too well. Popping a game in and pressing power sounds good but you gotta spend time looking for the game and going to pop it in and turn it on. As opposed to looking for the game in a list from a couch and pressing play. Also, retroachievements, online play and save states without needing to buy an expensive flash cart.
Very true. Emulation is so much more convenient and offers a lot of quality of life improvements. I love having my original tech and games to look at and play from time to time, but in many ways emulation wins. Especially for those older handhelds, like you mentioned.
Emulation is what i like because of save states and customization of options .. the original hardware is too expensive now and the games degrade over time especially optical discs. Batteries and capacitors give out and solder joints break and need to be redone and when you have have 50 plus games in physical form its stressful dude. I think if you like the art syle is better to just get a poster framed. I got an everdrive cart for my n64 and am thinking about selling all my games. Another thing is going original hardware takes up a ton of space! My retro pi console has 8k games on it can you imsgine owning 8 thousand games how many shelves you would need 😂😂😂 hell no!
I don't believe emulators and original hardware really matter in the end. With same accessories the experience is basically same with emulators having advantage. Of course it can be annoying playing Wii Sports with Xbox Controller because it's not meant for that.
Actually emulation can only be done on IBM or power PC based hardware like windows or Android or any Linux thing with the same hardware.. Power PC is IBM clone RISC hardware which was first implimented with N64 and basically required for native 3D regardless if an operating system is used or proprietary firmware. Apple is not or alteast no longer Power PC but proprietary Unix aka potato Linux so Apple is the worst way to emulate anything unless a game is directly ported/concerted to xcode aka potato script. Physical hardware has proprietary paripherals like light gibs which dose not exist on Android,/windows thus had to be emulated which is pretty rubbish since you will still be limited to nes hardware thus slowing down response time.
You are exactly right. Original hardware always beats emulation. With the original hardware all of the games run as they were designed, no flaws. Even if it costs more it's a much better experience. Even with the older hardware often looking worse besides emulation, majority of the games were designed to run on that system, so there's stuff taken away or added to make it easier. For example a lot of the gba games had a higher brightness to accompany no backlight on the screen, but when you emulate the game looks way too contrasted.

What you are speaking of is actually called a compatibility layer, not emulation. For it to be called emulation you need to be dealing with a different instruction set. As long as a frame can be drawn within 16.6 ms, the hardware generally doesn't matter other than getting a few specifics right (like sound, some peripherals)
Nah. GameCube is so much better on dolphin than og hardware. If you got friends over just plug a GameCube adapter and you can play the games in 4K with og controllers. Also all the games can be played online as well
Emulation... Free, easy, open source, illegal but no one will know (for ROMs), and you can connect a controller, higher res, better sound quality, some emus have cheats like gameshark, more storage space
I love nes and especially the god snes but nes games weren’t all that good many were overly difficult (idk how the hell I ever beat the original earthbound) and very hard to know what to do next especially the ones they crammed up with content
I will say I do like emulation better because some of these prices are insane butt I have three retro systems that's all I want they defined my childhood/ teenage years what if the game is ridiculously priced I won't buy it I'll emulate it if it's something I love I love being able to have it physically that sense of ownership my relationship with emulation in retro gaming is interesting to say the least I believe that retro gaming has its place but I also believe emulation is more cost-effective so normally what's my systems are only by the games I grew up playing fortunately most of them have not been expensive anyway great video

This. It's awesome to use an older system with a SD-card. The Gamecube with GC-Loader and Swiss for instance.

a good option is to use "RetroArch" on PC and hook it up to a CRT TV..... it also has a "run ahead" feature that kills all latency...
Even on a android phone those latency settings make mario land run as good or better as mario land on my 3ds that's very fluid and lag free.
