Just got my fully loaded X1 xDrive28i ($44K). Love this car. All the luxury and safety of a large car in a compact package with much better mileage and more parking opportunities. This car has everything the X3 or X5 has but is much more agile and leaves me with more room in my garage and less guilt at the gas station.
I always like when you review a car that I'm thinking of buying. A lot of the other reviews are long but say little. Your reviews are concise and informative. Thanks for the review. Glad you were able to review the 4 cylinder turbo.
X1. This is just one guys opinion, and admittedly I am no longer on "bus duty" but this X1 hits the spot as far as I'm concerned. )-60 times that are on par with a 306hp Camaro and 33mpg.....what more could you ask? A lease with 15K miles per year will be around $450 per month......with all maintenance covered......for the life of the lease. BMW service is second to none. The new X1 is a hit IMO.
As a former 2001 X5 and 2005 X3 owner I feel qualified to speak on this subject. This X1 is literally about 2 inches shorter than the 05 X3 and 1.5 inches narrower....so the term "smaller" should be taken in context. As good as the X5 and X3 were, I personally like the X1 much much more. At 49 years old I no longer have the need to shuttle 3 boys all over town so the whole size thing becomes a non issue. Now I know this isn't a '05 X3 to X1 comparison......but for my comments it will -cont-
have to do. I went to the local BMW dealer last week to test drive a X1. Wow! all I can say is all of the best things about a X3 have been incorporated and all of the crappy things (see ride quality) have been fixed. I struggled to coax 26mpg out of the X3's 220hp 3.0 litre motor. While the performance was adequate, it wasn't ever close to "fun". This X1 with the 2.0T is a blast to drive when you want it to be, and a modle citizen when you want MPG. -cont-
See, I have the X1 and it came out to $47K for the xDrive35i (V6, 3.0L engine), and I really wanted it for the size. It is nice and compact, and I drive a lot every day, so it fit my lifestyle perfectly. I first looked at the 1-series, but they were too small. This is exactly like the 1-series in many aspects, but just bigger with more features.
Great review Steve, thanks. I am underwhelmed with the offering and overwhelmed by the price. It's a cute little SAV but as another post said the price makes you opt for a 3 series or even stretch to a low end 5 series.
is the interior quality updated in anyway? im aware that the pre-facelift X1's interior is very plasticky and not on par of those from the X3 or even the 3-Series.
The Xdrive is typical BMW fare, which is to say flawless in it's operation, actually invisible might be a better word. The local BMW dealers here in town have several examples on the lot under $40K. The comment that these cars are strippers at the $33K mark would not be accurate. Adding the Cold Weather package and Premium Package still has these cars hovering in the $39K (MSRP) range. Presumably one could write a check for 10% less and walk out the door with a shiny new -cont-
They used to have a really cool looking one on the 3 series that I really loved and still do on my mom's car. I wish they would have kept them. They could slide in and out of the dash.
Why is it hard for BMW to engineer cup holders? I know it sounds dumb and some may even think I'm an idiot...but one of the reasons I have for not choosing a BMW is because of their cup-holders. Just look at it...did someone at BMW say, "Oh [crap] we forgot about the passenger cup holder...now what? cut a slit into the center console and stick this "cool looking" one in".
I would rather buy a 3-series, or X3. Because the X1, in my opinion, isn't worth the money. Get X-drive, and it's up at the price of a 328i. Get a convenience option and you can afford a 328i X-drive. Throw on some other goodies like M-sport package and your at the price of a 328ix with premium package or X3. Goes on and on. Point is, even for just 1-2k more, you can get a bigger car/sports sedan. Great video!
+ThatGirlAshli I'm hoping by the end of the year. I've got the new 7 Series coming before that. Until then, you can check out this quick primer vid I recently produced on the 2016 X1: ruclips.net/video/dmiTVsH_gbs/видео.html
Nice review. The new 2017 model doesn't look attractive at all in terms of driving characteristics. It has a transverse engine, meaning the weights is more to the front, and the traction is also front wheel biased. That is not a genuine BMW style. It's on a totally different level. If you want something like this old model from the video, I don't think there is any option available at this time. E pace jag, is something closer but still a compromise. My options are o either buy a normal price range suv, and an used roadster or coupe for fun as a summer vehicle or to save more money for a Macan S or X3 M40.
Steve - The nose on this looks absolutely ridiculous on it's overall length. It looks like there's about 10 feet of front fender and hood in front of the windshield. Was it that goofy looking in person?
Typical BMW....low base price, but option shoot it 33% higher. Good luck finding a lightly optioned one too. My father in-law works at a BMW dealer as their shuttle driver. He said this X1 is much smaller than you think, and I agree. But I di like it. Buts I would get an Allrosd!!
Honestly, this painfully obvious car critic - German love affair is getting REALLY tired and old. This car is nowhere near as great as it is made out to be in this video. It's funny how any other (non European) manufacturer attempting what BMW just did would get lashed out at, and would be criticized, especially in the handling department. This car's ride is harsh, and that's why it has good handling. It's that simple. It's not German magic that makes a pleasant ride AND good handling -.-
I agree, this car is a disgrace to BMW, the quality on this particular model is pretty bad. I saw better interior plastics on some Toyotas (Avalon, Highlander).
How about the faulty timing chain issues. Really expensive to repair or if you don't repair catastrophic engine failure occurs. The engine is an interference engine. Who wants a vehicle that you have to change out the timing chain every 100,000 kilometers? A Toyota Corolla has a timing chain that will last the life of the vehicle, why can't BMW hire an engineers that can design better engines? Why so much plastic in BMW engines? How about the fact there is no spare tire ,even a mini spare tire and the X1 needs run flat tires. Run flat tires are really expensive and not repairable if damaged. Neat small SUV/Wagon but the unreliability of this BMW should make you look elsewhere. That's why they are so cheap to buy used.

Do you still have it, and what are your thoughts after having it for a few years?
i know this is old but this is the best review on this car on youtube.
Thanks!
Agreed
x1 is best fuel efficient and has great control over the road and nice leather finished seating

Great looking interior & front end...the hood is a little long, but doesn't look bad...can it be had with a manual trans?
I hope they don't dilute their line up, but i do love this BMW! Great video again Steve!
It's long but the X1 received compliments for its looks everyone I went.

I6, not V6
You need to watch more of his reviews. Definitely not biased, he was just giving
his opinion on this car.
How are they when they hit the 125k mile/kilometer mark?

So the x1 is the size of the old x3. The x3 and x5 are so similar in size now, that it's hard to tell them apart.

Is it just me, or were you driving the wheels off that thing in the parking lot?

How does it compare to the Q5?
Thanks for the review Steve! Really loved the snow footage, haven't been able to find much. Were you able to make use of the "clip on" cupholder?
Great review. Love your videos. Do you know what towing is on the X1?
You do GREAT videos Steve!!!

Thoughts, Ideas, and what? Agree I had a 65Oi and the cup holder was not attractive

The X1 is darn impressive but dollar-for-dollar an Escape Titanium 2.0T likely gives you better inital value.
But it’s not a BMW
Picked up the 2015 one for 18k pretty stoked
Steve, when can we expect a review of the all new X1?
+ThatGirlAshli I'm hoping by the end of the year. I've got the new 7 Series coming before that. Until then, you can check out this quick primer vid I recently produced on the 2016 X1: ruclips.net/video/dmiTVsH_gbs/видео.html
The X1 is almost identical in size to the '05 X3.
it dont compare cuzz its a diff class i think theres a q3 comeing out soon

This is so ridiculous and off-base on so many levels. Must be the first video you've ever watched of mine.

Cant wait to see the 2013 toyota venza :)
30 mpg good? Must be the USA.

*Holy Fuckin Fuck, lmma buy dis shit within 2 days, chocolate brown is my choice,*
the horrendous wheelgap! my eyes! aaauugh
I really dont know why somebody would buy this..Its too pricy and it looks weird.

I like BMW's, but this thing is ugly. It reminds me of the hoopty wagons from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I'd rather have an X3 or X5.
Wt fk car
super !!!!!!!
This car just screams "I couldn't afford the X-5 I really wanted".
or l want a car but with higher visibility than other cunt on the road, it's amazing imma get one
My wife and I have both. The X1 is great in the city. The X5 is great on the highway.
