- Berchtesgaden is a picturesque Bavarian town located in the Alps, very close to the Austrian border. It was always a favored mountainous retreat among the Bavarian royalty but achieved sudden fame when Adolf Hitler chose the town for his summer home in early 1930s.
Thus began, what I would like to call, Berchtesgaden’s tryst with history - its rise and fall from power. What was once a mountain resort turned into an important headquarter for the Nazi regime. Later, it was severely bombed in 1945.
Today, Berchtesgaden is an important stop on every history addict’s German itinerary. However, there are several other amazing things to do in Berchtesgaden that are not just WW II such as taking a salt mine tour, exploring crystal clear alpine lakes, and checking out some beautiful Bavarian palaces and museums.

Yes, the place has a charm all its own, with the mountains as backdrop. Nice seeing it as it is today; modern and pretty, with more to offer than just its notorious past.

A beautiful place. I am from Texas but I can trace my ancestors back to 14th century Bavaria. The Churches in town are so wonderful.

My late wife and I had a ‘wohnung’ in Marktschellenberg and Berchtesgaden was our nearest town . Very happy there and miss it a lot, Thankyou for the memories.

Served in the U.S.Army on two different tours , doing two different jobs.First tour was aviation related where I had a lot of front seat time in a cobra gunship (G mdl). Second as an MP. Got to hang out B-garden numerous times.Would take the train down from Ansbach area. GA/PA was another nice place I visited a lot. even got to tour East Germany back in 83-84. Schweinfurt was my second tour. Loved that place and the people were the most hospitable! Prost!!!

Belo lugar, lembra muito aqueles brinquedos, feitos em bloquinhos, para montar casas, prédios, castelos, principalmente essas igrejas. Sou cristão protestante, porém acho muito bonita a arquitetura dessas igrejas católicas, um belo lugar, lindos jardins e lindas fontes. Parabéns por nos mostrar mais um belo lugar.
